  2. Clinton Clubs Rattlers 9-2 LumberKings take early lead and never look back By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore Lately when the Rattlers have lost, they have for the most part *really* lost. If you're going to do something, go all the way with it, right? Their prior loss was 15-2, and two losses before that they capitulated 12-2. They also were bested twice by Clinton a few weeks ago at home, 15-3 and 10-3. Miguel Sanchez made just his second career start, and it did not go well. Not sure if they plan on getting him in the rotation permanently or if it was just spot start as they sort out the rotation in a post-Supak world. The two guys who followed Sanchez, Parker Berberet & Andrew Vernon, wouldn't seem likely to move into a tandem starting pitcher role, but who knows. If it was just a spot start for Sanchez, Rattler pitchers currently on the DL are Josh Pennington, Victor Diaz, and Jordan Desguin. Starting pitcher types who are on the Helena roster and may or may not be healthy include Rodrigo Benoit, Karsen Lindell, Scott Serigstad, Michael Peterson, Nash Walters, Christian Trent, Drake Owenby, and Jake Drossner. There are some more guys on the AZL roster as well that theoretically by called up. The long awaited debut of Daniel Missaki perhaps? Oh, and the offense played today too. Debuting Rattler Trey York went 0-2, though he did walk twice. Joantgel Segovia, Trever Morrison, and Ronnie Gideon all had two hits, and one of Gideon's was a double. Kind of a depressing statistic to keep track of, but today the Rattlers had only two players in the lineup finish the game with a sub .200 batting average, and one of them was York. There have been times it's been 4 or 5 guys, so progress! Another little tidbit, the LumberKings had 4 Latin American amateur free agent signees in their lineup. The Rattlers had one (Segovia). Also, you have to give Rayder Ascanio a better player profile picture than that, guys. "This is not in focus at a......h, screw it." Wisconsin Game Log Death blow: Clinton Bottom of the 2nd Luis Rengifo doubles (8) on a fly ball to right fielder Demi Orimoloye. Dimas Ojeda flies out to left fielder Joantgel Segovia. Kristian Brito singles on a line drive to left fielder Joantgel Segovia. Luis Rengifo scores. Luis Liberato triples (6) on a fly ball to right fielder Demi Orimoloye. Kristian Brito scores. Rayder Ascanio walks. With Bryson Brigman batting, Rayder Ascanio steals (8) 2nd base, Luis Liberato scores. Throwing error by catcher Mario Feliciano. Bryson Brigman homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Rayder Ascanio scores. Anthony Jimenez singles on a line drive to center fielder Monte Harrison. Nick Zammarelli flies out to center fielder Monte Harrison. With Nick Thurman batting, Anthony Jimenez advances to 2nd on a balk. Nick Thurman strikes out swinging.

  5. Rattlers Start Series at Clinton with 7-4 Win Brown earns win with six solid innings; Neuhaus knocks in three for Wisconsin By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore The on-again-off-again Wisconsin lineup was back on again tonight, mashing out 7 runs in the first four innings and then cruising to a 7-4 win. Tucker Neuhaus, Caleb Whalen, and Joangtel Segovia each had two hits. Both of Neuhaus' hits were doubles as part of a 3 RBI night. Segovia added a double as well. Ronnie Gideon, who hit 17 home runs in 59 games last year, hit his first home run of the year tonight, in his 35th game as a Rattler. Zack Brown made his best start as a pro, working six innings of two-run ball. He walked none and struck out six. When Brown is on, he's getting grounders, and get grounders he did tonight to the tune of nine ground outs to one air out. He's pitched a bit better than his 5.21 ERA indicates, at least from what I've seen. Aaron Myers picked up the three inning save, though he did make things a little interesting in the ninth. Wisconsin Game Log The most damage: Wisconsin Top of the 3rd Joantgel Segovia reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Joe Rizzo. Joantgel Segovia to 2nd. With Monte Harrison batting, wild pitch by Nick Wells, Joantgel Segovia to 3rd. Monte Harrison walks. Tucker Neuhaus doubles (17) on a line drive to right fielder Anthony Jimenez. Joantgel Segovia scores. Monte Harrison to 3rd. Demi Orimoloye walks. Jose Cuas walks. Monte Harrison scores. Tucker Neuhaus to 3rd. Demi Orimoloye to 2nd. Pitching Change: Jack Anderson replaces Nick Wells. Ronnie Gideon strikes out swinging. Nathan Rodriguez grounds out to pitcher Jack Anderson. Tucker Neuhaus scores. Demi Orimoloye to 3rd. Jose Cuas to 2nd. Gilbert Lara grounds out, shortstop Rayder Ascanio to first baseman Nick Zammarelli.
  6. Pratto makes me nervous as the league-wide track record for high school first basemen hasn't been great, maybe only better than high school catchers on the position player side. Of course, that's not to say Pratto won't succeed, just that I would not reach to get him and 9 is just too high, IMO.

  8. I think this is a very good point. At 5 overall or 9 overall, maybe through the end of the first round, there had better be some pretty high conviction in the draft room with the team's first selection. But really after the first pick in the draft, the conviction level drops with each pick and at some point teams can't really say, "yah, that guy is definitely the best guy left." It gets a lot more nuanced after a certain point, and obviously bonus demands and bonus pool strategy plays into picks as well. BPA at 9, sure. BPA in the fourth round, I don't think that concept applies so much.
  9. Baseball America has refreshed their top 200 list, and it will be expanding to 500 pretty soon. They've included scouting reports (behind a pay wall) for 100+ prospects so far. Speaking of top 500 lists, Perfect Game has been posting their top 500 in 100 part sections this week, and 100-1 comes out later today.
  10. Jim Callis has an updated MLB Pipeline mock. Don't want to rehash my thoughts on Adell, but there are at least a dozen guys who were still on the board in that mock that I'd take before him at 9. Also, if someone has a mock draft they've seen that I've missed, please feel free to post it or message me and I can grab it. I've been told a top 100 type of list from D1 Baseball will be posted on their site in the next week or so. Will combine their HS/Juco/College lists, which have so far been done separately.
  11. Beloit Blasts Rattlers Snappers crush Wisconsin 15-2 in series finale By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore Monte Harrison had a double and a home run in an otherwise forgettable game for the Rattlers. Trigger warning for the pitching lines. Wisconsin Game Log Nothing to see here.
  12. I'll do the honors... 1.1 - Kyle Wright
  13. My thoughts on Carlson earlier today. A really great draft (from my perspective anyway) at this point might be something like: 9. Carlson 34. Vientos 46. Heatherly Yes, three HSers so that may be unlikely, but I would be thrilled.
  14. Rattlers, Roegner Win Game Two 4-3 Wisconsin splits doubleheader at Beloit with victory in nightcap By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore The offense got four runs in the first three innings, and the Rattlers just held on to win after Braden Webb came in to pitch in the bottom of the seventh, and let's just say he didn't have his best stuff. Same as game one, no Rattler had more than one hit, with doubles going this time to Tucker Neuhaus (again), Ryan Aguilar, and Jose Cuas. Demi Orimoloye, who had been on a bit of a hot streak, took an 0-7 in the two games today. Cam Roegner, who might be a native of a state you're aware of, allowed one run in six innings of work. He's had issues getting the ball down most of the year, but seemed to do a better job of that today. Webb, as mentioned, came in to work the seventh and walked the first four of five batters he faced, though to his credit he held the Snappers in check before the tying or winning runs could cross the plate. Webb has not had significant control issues for most of the season, so hopefully this is just an aberration. Wisconsin Game Log Could have been worse! Beloit Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Braden Webb replaces Cameron Roegner. JaVon Shelby walks. Edwin Diaz walks. JaVon Shelby to 2nd. Jason Goldstein walks. JaVon Shelby to 3rd. Edwin Diaz to 2nd. Collin Theroux strikes out swinging. Eric Marinez walks. JaVon Shelby scores. Edwin Diaz to 3rd. Jason Goldstein to 2nd. Mike Martin grounds into a force out, shortstop Trever Morrison to second baseman Tucker Neuhaus. Edwin Diaz scores. Jason Goldstein to 3rd. Eric Marinez out at 2nd. Mike Martin to 1st. Nate Mondou flies out to right fielder Demi Orimoloye.
  15. Beloit beats Rattlers 2-1 in game one Snappers score walkoff win on sac fly By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore Doubles from the Rattlers' 3/4/5 hitters, Mario Feliciano, Tucker Neuhaus, and Monte Harrison, were not enough as Wisconsin tied the game in the top of the seventh, only to lose it on a sac fly-off a half inning later. A handful of poor night at the plate also saw five players in the Wisconsin lineup finish the game with batting averages under .200. Even at this point in the year, that's a lot. Trey Supak pitched brilliantly again, logging 5 innings of scoreless baseball. Two hits, two walks, six strikeouts, and his ERA drops to 1.76. Parker Berberet can lose however, and took his first pro loss by allowing both of the Snappers' runs in the last 1 2/3 innings of the game. Wisconsin Game Log It could have been more than 1 in the seventh: Wisconsin Top of the 7th Tucker Neuhaus doubles (14) on a sharp line drive to right fielder Luis Barrera. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Trever Morrison replaces Tucker Neuhaus. Monte Harrison doubles (9) on a line drive to left fielder Luke Persico. Trever Morrison scores. Jose Cuas reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by pitcher Heath Bowers. Monte Harrison to 3rd. Ronnie Gideon reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by shortstop Eric Marinez. Jose Cuas to 2nd. Gilbert Lara grounds into a double play, shortstop Eric Marinez to catcher Collin Theroux to first baseman Kyle Nowlin. Monte Harrison out at home. Jose Cuas to 3rd. Ronnie Gideon to 2nd. Caleb Whalen grounds out, shortstop Eric Marinez to first baseman Kyle Nowlin.
  16. Rooker is pretty close to the top 50. As to why he's not higher, my understanding is it is a combination of age, being limited to 1B/LF (and not being great at either), and offspeed recognition issues.
  17. I noted it on Twitter, but his slider just completely lacked bite and he was missing out over the plate with it. This was exacerbated by not having FB command and lack of trust in his change. He looked genuinely frustrated out there.
  18. It's close. Ponce has a better chance to stick as a starter due to his arm action, but for me Burnes has the better breaking stuff and does a better job driving the ball down in the zone. It seems like Burnes has been maintaining velocity just fine as well, which is a great sign. I also like Burnes' sequencing more right now. He does a great job of keeping hitters off balance. So I'd take Burnes, but it's really close. If/when Ponce finds his location a bit better/gets the fastball down more consistently, I reserve the right to flip flop.
  19. I speculate that the unseen battle entails Stearns and Attanasio staging bizarrely accurate recreations of Godzilla fight scenes. Stearns is Mothra.
  20. I believe the reason McConnell has fallen is due to questions both about his ability to unlock his offensive upside, and questions about his ability to stick at short. His continuum of development could run anywhere from solid offensive/defensive shortstop to decent defensive/light hitting primarily non-SS utility player. That double uncertainty in having to develop his impressive physical tools both at the plate and on the dirt is going to scare some teams off.
  21. I don't know the answer to that. I guess you'd have to search out other pitchers who had that same kind of injury and see how they progressed. If the Brewers' medical staff were dubious about his long term prospects, I'd hope the the Brewers scouting department would a)ask the question to the doctors in the first place, and b)would heed their advice and pass.
  22. Ponce with another good outing, though his strikeout rate continues to dip. He has command issues in that he fills up the zone a little too much with his fastball and cutter. It's a refusal to risk walking guys taken a little too much to an extreme. His curve and change are both still works in progress, at least from what I've seen. In that they are about the same size, I think a natural comparison is with Trey Supak. While Ponce has a better fastball, Supak has done a better job this year with moving his arsenal around the zone, up, down, in, out. I'd also put Supak's much improved curve ahead of Ponce's cutter/slider at the moment.
  23. Patrick, another guy whose name has popped up a few places recently is Trevor Stephan, the righty out of Arkansas. I've read PG's report on him from early March, but have you heard if he's made progress on his breaking ball since? His numbers, especially the peripherals, are a bit eye-popping, especially considering how big he is.
  24. Marcos Diplan will be the starter for game 2.
  25. I've added a few new sources, so here are the updated aggregate rankings, expanded to 50: 1. Hunter Greene, HS, RHP/SS 2. Brendan McKay, 4yr, LHP/1B/OF 3. Kyle Wright, 4yr, RHP 4.
