  1. Brinson out on the basepaths again, trying to go first to third on Gennett's single to left. Impressive number of outs on the basepaths early on for the Brewers. Edit: And immediately afterwards, this happened: Travis Shaw grounds into a double play, pitcher Connor Sadzeck to shortstop Hanser Alberto to third baseman Josh Morgan to second baseman Rougned Odor. Scooter Gennett out at 3rd.
  2. Pretty sure MrAllen is right - if $1 or $100 were really on the table, it would be a waste of time to include that in the deal at all. The value of time it took for Dombrowski/Stearns to agree to that clause, combined with the cost of drafting the documentation for the clause, far far exceed $100. There is no benefit to its existence, except as a backstop to completing the trade in case all the players on the list decided to move to Tibet and join a monastery rather than play for the Brewers. I guess it's also not outside the realm of possibility that the Brewers could decide to take the $100 if they change their minds about the players on the list, and that they'd come out less behind by taking the $100, as opposed to spending time and resources on developing one of the players.
  3. Ben Badler's first July 2 preview, through the lens of the MLB Showcase beginning tomorrow. The Brewers are tied to a pair of outfielders—switch-hitting Larry Ernesto out of the Dominican Republic and Carlos Rodriguez, a lefty from Venezuela—with expected seven-figure prices. More outfielders! Larry Ernesto: https://youtu.be/8f4LiUzumC8 The Brewers' draft pool is $5.25 million.
  4. Nationals are close to signing Wieters.
  5. Forget where I saw it, but Houser is throwing off a flat surface at 60 feet. If he pitches this season, it'll be August at the earliest. Also a possibility he gets sent to the AFL to get some work in.
  6. Plus Susac will be up at some point anyway. Teams virtually never go through an entire season with only two catchers.
  7. Yah, I think Pina more or less has the team made, unless something dramatic happens in spring training. The prudent move from a standpoint of roster flexibility would be to go with Bandy and Pina, and burn one of Susac's two options. That way you'd still have two catchers with options remaining heading into next year. There was some research done that showed catchers actually do show some tendency to have later-career offensive peaks, especially guys who have been backups for large chunks of their careers. I have the book at home so I don't have a link but I'll look at it again tonight. In other words, I wouldn't write Pina off because he's 30 (almost). If he were at any other position, I'd be more hesitant about his future.
  8. I can't find the tweet right off hand, but Mass Haas confirmed that the PTBNL has not been decided upon, and they have until early May to decide.
  9. The most accurate player performance projections have typically been the average of the major systems... PECOTA, Marcel, ZIPS, Steamer, and anything else you'd trust to be relevant. It would be fun to see the Brewers projections in that way, if someone was inclined to put it together.
  10. After adding in a few more prospect rankings, the Brewers still have the same 8 guys averaging a 55 or 60 OFP, though Ray and Hader have both been bumped up from 55 to 60, to give Brinson some company. Ortiz, Diaz, Erceg, Clark, and Bickford are all at 55. There were 13 prospects with a 50 OFP at last check, but that number has ballooned to 18: Phillips, Woodruff, Diplan, Dubon, Ponce, Devin Williams, Burnes, Lopez, Pennington, Harrison, Cordell, Webb, Lara, Orimoloye, Medeiros, Kirby, Peralta, Nottingham. Notables averaging 45 OFP: Barnes, Taylor Williams, Mario Feliciano, McClanahan, Perrin, Taylor, Wang, Gatewood, Yamamoto, Derby, Roache, Coulter, Magnifico, Stokes, Houser, Mallen, Reed, Gabriel Garcia. There are others, but most of the other only have one or two OFP grades, so it's not really an average of anything at this point.
  11. Burnes needs to work on his changeup, so I don't think they push him too quickly. Agree with CWH though, I'd say more likely than not he starts in Carolina, though there's a ton (closer to 7 tons, actually) of competition for pitching spots.
  12. He throws hard, but he's going to be 31 in August. Wouldn't be opposed to the Brewers claiming him, but at first blush giving up anything of value would seem like a reach. I think the Brewers would be more likely to claim Pat Light. Also throws hard, and throws a splitter, and is about 5 years younger.
  13. The chance to see the extremely rare instance of a pitcher throwing the ball to the backstop or in the hitting zone during intentional walk pitches makes them mildly exciting. But, I can see the reasoning behind just giving the batter first base. I do wonder if it will change the psychology of the move, though. Just telling a guy to walk to first so the team can pitch to the next guy is a bit different than having to watch all four intentional balls and really think about the move. And teams that already issue a lot of IBBs could save quite a few pitches over the course of a season. But I'm really a one issue guy on changes that need to be made to the game - defensive indifference. Get rid of the ruling. A stolen base is a stolen base.
  14. With the Baseball America prospect grades added in, the 50 OFP list expands by two to 13: -Josh Pennington -Gilbert Lara The final major update is MLB Pipeline, which will post their new Brewers list on the 23rd.
  15. Chris Carter isn't going to get significantly more than what Park is being paid next year. Logan Morrison just got less. No thanks.
  16. FWIW... by my count the Brewers have 8 guys who average a 55 OFP or higher, based on various legitimate scouting sources (not including BA, whose 2017 handbook is shipping within the next few days). Those are generally the guys who would have the best shot to crack top 100 lists. That group, in order of highest OFP to lowest: -Lewis Brinson (the only player to average 60) -Corey Ray -Isan Diaz -Josh Hader -Lucas Erceg -Luis Ortiz -Phil Bickford -Trent Clark I can see the arguments against Erceg (short track record) and Bickford (ganja), but based on scout-sourcing those other 6 guys should be in or extremely close to the top 100. The Brewers have 11 other guys averaging a 50 OFP, which is generally not enough to make top 100 lists, though individual opinions of scouts may vary, so a couple of these guys have popped up: Again in order: -Braden Webb -Brandon Woodruff -Brett Phillips -Cody Ponce -Corbin Burnes -Devin Williams -Jacob Nottingham (propped up by BPro's last report on him, which was a 60; removing that, Nottingham is a 45) -Jorge Lopez -Marcos Diplan -Mauricio Dubon -Ryan Cordell
  17. Guessing Brew4U is talking more about how the Claim-DFA-Retain process has only gotten through the first two steps this offseason. They've claimed and then lost Walker, Parker, and Geltz so far (anyone else?), and are likely to have wasted time and money on Adrianza as well. Also get the feeling it is just a matter of time before they try the same thing with Aguilar. They also lost Liriano trying to get him through waivers. I don't disagree with that usage of the 40th spot, but to this point they are coming up empty this offseason.
  18. If Adrianza clears waivers, he can elect free agency.
  19. Adrianza is out of options, so would have to be DFA'd to send him to the minors.
  20. They could have eliminated the picks and redistributed the bonus pool money proportionately across the other 29 teams. Everyone gets an extra $70k. Woohoo!
  21. In his chat today, Longenhagen mentioned that he should have put Braden Webb and Troy Stokes in the Other Prospects of Note section as well, but didn't.
  22. Garcia is there, down in the Other Prospects of Note section.
  23. Yep. He has one option left after using his first two in 2013 and 2015. He does not have enough service time to refuse an optional assignment either. (You need 5 years, and he's at a little under 3.5).
  24. Ray and Brinson absolutely (Ray was his #1 draft prospect), but I'm not so sure on Diaz and quite doubtful on Bickford. We'll see though.
  25. On Hader, Law said he gives him a 40-50% shot at starting, which is up from 0% a few years ago. Comped him closer to Andrew Miller than Chris Sale.
