  1. While I am always interested in the MLB draft, I have to plead ignorance about these players for the most part. I learn a bit heading up to the draft, reading the latest mock drafts and opinions from people here on the site (which I appreciate). I'm not going to say if we did well or not - because I just don't know. However, Turang seems like an intriguing player, and I like that he is expected to stay at a premium defensive position. Turang, Gray and Bello offer lots of young, raw talent that will take time to develop - which I'm okay with. Generally, I'd rather go for upside on the premium picks. As always, it will be fun to see how the kids progress.
  2. So sorry. Losing a pet is hard. Like others, I went through it for the first time three years ago. They become so omnipresent in your life - when they are gone, it's just a big void. We rescued a dog about 3-4 months after our golden retriever passed away. He's awesome.
  3. Final: Pensacola 5, Biloxi 1 Wahoos Strike Early, Hold Shuckers in Check Gatewood Homers, Shuckers Held To Five Hits In Loss By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers Ramirez struck out six batters in a row in his outing against the Barons. (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Outside of a Jake Gatewood HR, Biloxi bats were silent on Wednesday, as the Shuckers lost to the Wahoos 5-1. Kodi Medeiros let his lack of control get the better of him in the 1st inning. He walked a batter, hit another, and then gave up a triple - scoring two runs. That was all Pensacola would need as Biloxi managed only five hits and a walk. Batting Corey Ray: 1-3, 2B, BB Jake Gatewood: 2-4, HR Trent Grisham: 1-3 Pitching Kodi Medeiros: 5.0 IP, 5 hits, 3 ER, 2BB, 6K, Lose Miguel Sanchez: 1.0 IP, 2 hits, 2 ER, 0BB, 2K Nick Ramirez: 2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K Notes Gatewood is now tied for the Southern League lead in home runs with 11. Biloxi Game Log Bad 1st inning. Pensacola Bottom of the 1st Daniel Sweet grounds out, shortstop Jake Hager to first baseman Jake Gatewood. Shed Long walks. Nick Longhi hit by pitch. Shed Long to 2nd. Brian O'Grady triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Trent Grisham, deflected by center fielder Corey Ray. Shed Long scores. Nick Longhi scores. Luis Gonzalez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Corey Ray. Brian O'Grady scores. Narciso Crook grounds into a double play, third baseman Lucas Erceg to second baseman Keston Hiura to first baseman Jake Gatewood. Luis Gonzalez out at 2nd.
  4. Markakis is a really weird player. Back when he was in his 2nd and 3rd seasons, I thought he was going to be great. In his 3rd year, at age 24, he hit .306 with 48 doubles, 20 HR, 99 walks, .897 OPS. You'd think he was going to be an all-star. Instead, that was his peak, and he declined in just about every way. His defense faltered, his power subsided, his batting average dropped. I think he had some back issues, which never kept him off the field - but sapped him of his ability. Markakis went from a 6.0 fWAR at age 24, to never producing more than 2.4 fWAR over the rest of his career. He just became a solid, 1.5-2.0 WAR type guy. Nothing bad about that, but nothing great. Expecting big things, Baltimore gave Markakis a major contract extension, so the team had no real choice but to keep playing him. Again, he wasn't bad - and it's not like Baltimore produced many good players to challenge him. So the team just kept trotting him out there everyday. And playing everyday was a talent that Markakis had kept. Since his 2nd season, he's played in 155 or more games every year but one. Give him credit for that - he's been durable. To everyone's surprise, Markakis got a large FA contract from Atlanta four years ago. You can argue that the signing was foolish, but Markakis just kept plugging along - hitting .280ish with his power further diminishing. Again, Atlanta - like Baltimore before them - just kept playing the guy as he was owed a lot of money and they had few other options. His nice 2018 aside, I'm not sure he can reach 3,000. Right now, he needs about 870 hits to reach 3,000. The issue is that he's going to have to keep playing everyday for the next few seasons. Even if he hits .300+ this year, does anyone really think that's his ability going forward? I doubt it. They'll see it as an aberration, and look at 2013-17 - when he hit .270-.280ish. Let's just say Markakis finds a team to give him a 3-year deal and regular playing time this off season - let's speculate as to if he could get 3,000 hits: 2018: 100 more hits 2019-21 (ages 35-37): 160 each season (480 total) 2022-23 (ages 38-39): 100 each season (200 total) Total: 780 hits This means he's still 100 short. And this is assuming he can be an everyday player for the next three seasons, and then a semi-regular for a couple of more years - until age 39. Very few guys do that. Not saying he won't, but it'll be tough. If he could manage to get to this point, I could see him hanging on for a couple of more seasons to reach 3,000. But most guys fade earlier than this - so I don't see him getting there. However, if he did reach 3,000, I'm not sure he'd make the HoF. His numbers just aren't that good. But I won't freak out if he would get in. The one way he'd make the HoF is if his new found hitting prowess keeps going for a few years. If he hits .300+ for a few more seasons, it's a lot easier to justify voting him in the Hall with 6-7 .300+ seasosn and a career batting average of .295 - as opposed to one who hit .300 a few times and his a life time BA of .285 or so.
  5. Final: Biloxi 8, Pensacola 3 Brown Spins Another Gem In Shuckers Win Right-hander Sets Career High In Strikeouts Against Blue Wahoos By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers Biloxi Box Score Biloxi wins 6-3 behind the arm of Zack Brown, who continued his excellent play by striking out 11 batters in six innings of work. He gave up only four hits and a walk while surrendering one earned run. He is 5-0 on the season. Biloxi hitters had seven hits and seven walks on the day - enough to push six runs across the plate. The Shuckers managed the win despite four errors, including two by Keston Hiura. Batting Corey Ray: 1-3, 2B, 2BB Troy Stokes Jr.: 1-4, HR, BB Keston Hiura: 2-5, 2B, 2 SB Trent Grisham: 0-1, 3BB Pitching Zack Brown: 6.0 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 1BB, 11K, Win Danny Reynolds: 2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 1BB, 4K Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 1K, Save Notes Half of Troy Stokes Jr.'s hits (27 of 54) have been for extra bases (15 doubles, 4 triples and 8 HRs). Biloxi Game Log Biloxi scored two runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th innings.
  6. Nice story. Thanks for sharing.
  7. No. READ the original post again. I'm asking about a specific offer, whether or not you guys would accept that deal or not. Not "Hey, what do you think of James Shields?". All money covered, Lemons as the return. Okay. No. Agree. No.
  8. Final: Pensacola 5, Biloxi 1 Seventh Inning the Difference in Pensacola Luis Ortiz Tosses Four Scoreless Against Blue Wahoos By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers Biloxi Box Score Luis Ortiz good. Cody Ponce bad. Shucker hitters bad. Shuckers lose 5-1. Ortiz had a great game - allowing only one hit over four innings. Unfortunately, Ponce decided to implode in the 7th innings, giving up - in this order - a single, a hit batsman, a walk, a double, a wild pitch, a triple and a sacrifice fly. The crazy thing is that - other than the 7th inning - Pensacola had only one hit the entire game. Shucker batters managed only five hits and a run, going 1-8 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight. Batting Jake Hager: 1-3, BB, SB Trent Grisham: 1-3, 2B, BB Pitching Luis Ortiz: 4.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 4K Cody Ponce: 4.0 IP, 3 hits, 5 ER, 2BB, 2K Notes Corey Ray has gone 1-17 with nine strikeouts over his last five games. Biloxi Game Log One ugly inning was all it took. Pensacola Bottom of the 7th Gavin LaValley flies out to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. Luis Gonzalez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Trent Grisham. Brian O'Grady hit by pitch. Luis Gonzalez to 2nd. Taylor Sparks walks. Luis Gonzalez to 3rd. Brian O'Grady to 2nd. Chris Okey doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. Luis Gonzalez scores. Brian O'Grady scores. Taylor Sparks scores. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Daniel Sweet replaces Robinson Leyer. With Daniel Sweet batting, wild pitch by Cody Ponce, Chris Okey to 3rd. Daniel Sweet triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder Corey Ray. Chris Okey scores. C. J. McElroy out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. Daniel Sweet scores. Shed Long grounds out, second baseman Blake Allemand to first baseman Jake Gatewood.

  10. Shields is a shell of his former self - and at 36, he's probably not going to get better. His 2018 has been okay, but his HR rate is really low (for him). This is a guy who has given up 33, 40 and 27 HRs over the past three years (last season's 27 HRs surrender was done is just 117 innings). He's been better this year, but I just wouldn't trust him going forward - especially in Miller Park. Perhaps the guy has fixed something in his delivery or whatever - but 1/3 of a mediocre season isn't enough to wipe away his last few years. If you want some starting pitching depth he might work, but I wouldn't give up anything for him - and I certainly wouldn't take him without the Sox covering a boatload of his salary. He's the kind of guy you might pick up at the trade deadline for nothing if you have some back of the rotation concerns. But nothing more.
  11. Final: Biloxi 6, Mississippi 5 Shuckers Slug Their Way To 6-5 Victory Jankins Picks Up First Hit, Tosses Six In Win By Garrett Greene Biloxi Box Score Troy Stokes Jr. and Tyler Heineman homered in the 7th inning on Sunday to lead the Shuckers to a 6-5 victory of Pensacola. Thomas Jankins got the win - his league leading seventh - throwing six innings of three run ball. At the plate, Stokes Jr., Heineman, and Lucas Erceg each had a multi-hit game. Batting Troy Stokes Jr.: 3-4, HR, 2 RBI Lucas Erceg: 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI Tyler Heinemann: 2-4, HR, SB Pitching Thomas Jankins: 6.0 IP, 4 hits, 3 ER, 3BB, 4K, Win Jon Olczak: 2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 4K Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER, 0BB, 0K, Save Notes 24-year old Jon Olczak has quietly had a nice season out of the Shuckers bullpen. After throwing two innings of no run ball on Sunday, his ERA has dropped to 1.40. He has struck out 27 batters in 25.2 innings, while walking only four. He was named the Southern League BC Relief Pitcher of the Month for May. Olczak was a 21st round pick out of North Carolina State in 2015. Biloxi Game Log Biloxi scored three runs in the 6th and 7th innings to win the game 6-5. Biloxi Top of the 6th Thomas Jankins singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder C. McElroy. Corey Ray called out on strikes. Pitching Change: Carlos Navas replaces Seth Varner, batting 9th. Troy Stokes Jr. singles on a fly ball to right fielder Daniel Sweet. Thomas Jankins to 2nd. Keston Hiura singles on a line drive to center fielder C. J. McElroy. Thomas Jankins to 3rd. Troy Stokes Jr. to 2nd. Jake Gatewood called out on strikes. Lucas Erceg doubles (8) on a line drive to right fielder Daniel Sweet. Thomas Jankins scores. Troy Stokes Jr. Keston Hiura scores. Jake Hager pops out to second baseman Shed Long. Biloxi Top of the 7th Pitching Change: Victor Payano replaces Carlos Navas, batting 9th. Clint Coulter strikes out swinging. Tyler Heineman homers (2) on a line drive to left center field. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Wendell Rijo replaces Thomas Jankins. Wendell Rijo singles on a line drive to left fielder Nick Longhi. Corey Ray flies out to left fielder Nick Longhi. Troy Stokes Jr. homers (7) on a fly ball to left field. Wendell Rijo scores. Pitching Change: Jesus Reyes replaces Victor Payano, batting 9th. Keston Hiura hit by pitch. Jake Gatewood grounds into a force out, shortstop Luis Gonzalez to second baseman Shed Long. Keston Hiura out at 2nd.
  12. I really like Osiris Johnson, high schooler out in California. Can pick it in the dirt and also happens to be one of the youngest players in the draft. Doesn't turn 18 until November, I think. Would be more than fine with him at 60 or 73. Plus, you gotta like anyone named after the Egyptian God of the Underworld.
  13. Archer to have an MRI on an injured groin. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/06/rays-notes-archer-banda-pitching-mariners-trades.html Doesn't look serious - they're only talking a start, but you never know what the MRI will find with something like this.
  14. I talked to a baseball writer who said that he had not heard much regarding the buzz around who Milwaukee is interested in. Drafting this late, they really are all about value, and they'll wait and see who falls to them at #21. The Brewers are usually pretty tight-lipped about things, but my source has had some interesting info in the past. So we will see if anything else pops up.
  15. Archer is all about cost. If Tampa keeps asking for the moon, of course we'll say no. But he was really good in May (2.33 ERA), and the club is foolish not to keep tabs on him. Again, no one wants to give up what Tampa was reportedly asking this past off season. But times change and Tampa's asking price may fall drastically if they decide to retool. The team would be wise to keep tabs on Archer, see if they think he can be an upgrade, and then determine what they are willing to pay for him.
  16. Taylor Williams is starting to display how good he can potentially be. Last six games - 7.0 innings, 4 hits allowed, no runs, no walks, 8K. He seems to be getting more consistent work, which likely helps. Consistency will no doubt be a big deal for him - but I like the talent. If we can count on him in important situations, it makes our bullpen even more formidable.
  17. Final: Mississippi 6, Biloxi 1 Early Runs Pad M-Braves Win in Series Finale Hiura and Hager Each Add a Pair of Knocks By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Trey Supak's second AA game was not a pretty one. The big right-hander surrendered six runs on seven hits and four walks in just four innings. Shucker relievers would hold the Mississippi Braves scoreless for the rest of the game, but Biloxi only managed a single run, going 1-9 with runners in scoring position - and leaving eight batters stranded. Keston Hiura and Jake Hager each had a pair of hits to lead the Shuckers. Batting Keston Hiura: 2-4, 2B Jake Hager: 2-4, 2B Tyler Heidemann: 1-3, BB Troy Stokes Jr.: 0-2, 2BB Pitching Trey Supak: 4.0 IP, 7 hits, 6 ER, 4BB, 7K, Lose Brad Kuntz: 2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 3K Danny Reynolds: 1.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K Miguel Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 ER, 0BB, 3K Notes After swiping a dozen bases without being caught, Corey Ray has been thrown out stealing on his last two attempts. Biloxi Game Log Supak got roughed up in the 3rd - two walks, a single, and three doubles = 4 runs. Biloxi never came back. Mississippi Top of the 3rd Daniel Lockhart walks. Luis Valenzuela singles on a ground ball to right fielder Trent Grisham. Daniel Lockhart to 3rd. Tyler Marlette doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. Daniel Lockhart scores. Alex Jackson grounds out softly, third baseman Lucas Erceg to first baseman Jake Gatewood. Tyler Marlette scores. Tyler Neslony to 3rd. Taylor Murphy strikes out swinging. Connor Lien doubles (9) on a ground ball to left fielder Troy Stokes Jr. , deflected by shortstop Jake Hager. Tyler Neslony scores. Trey Supak intentionally walks Luis Marte. Enderson Franco strikes out swinging.
  18. Final: Biloxi 5, Mississippi 4 Relentless Shuckers' Offense Persists Over M-Braves Grisham Supplies the Deciding Tally to Take the Series By Spencer Siegel / Biloxi Shuckers (Michael Krebs) Biloxi Box Score Trent Grisham hit an home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help Biloxi come back and defeat Mississippi on Friday night, 5-4. In addition to Grisham's dramatic HR, Jake Gatewood had a bases loaded double, while Lucas Erceg and Troy Stokes Jr. each had a pair of hits. The Shuckers got a nice performance from Kodi Medeiros, who gave up only one unearned run in six innings of work. He walked two and struck out seven. Keston Hiura went 1-3, and scored a run, in his AA debut. Batting Troy Stokes Jr.: 2-4 Jake Gatewood: 1-4, 2B, 3 RBI Lucas Erceg: 2-4 Trent Grisham: 1-4, HR Mitch Ghelfi: 1-3 Kesten Hiura: 1-3 Corey Ray: 1-3 Pitching Kodi Medeiros: 6.0 IP, 6 hits, 1 ER, 2BB, 7K Nick Ramirez: 2.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 ER, 0BB, 2K, BS, Win Nate Griep: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K, Save Notes Erceg has been piling up the errors of late. He now has 11 on the year. Nate Griep now has 18 saves on the season. He has a 1.44 ERA. Biloxi Game Log Gatewood's bases loaded double got the Shuckers going in the 3rd. Biloxi Bottom of the 3rd Corey Ray singles on a ground ball to right fielder Tyler Neslony. Troy Stokes Jr. singles on a line drive to center fielder Connor Lien. Corey Ray to 2nd. Trent Grisham grounds out, pitcher Andres Santiago to first baseman Tyler Marlette.
  19. I've seen Jordyn Adams linked to the Brewers in more and more mocks of late. That's assuming he gets to us.
  20. Correct. They give you a week for free.
  21. I think you're going to see this more and more often. The reason is that it produces traffic. A year or so ago I read a chat or interview with Dave Cameron - when he was still at Fangraphs - and he said that lists of any kind are what draws clicks. People just love lists, and can't get enough of them. It used to be you'd get one list a year from an outlet. Now they do more because a) people click on them, and b) their competitors are doing them, so they should do them as well.
  22. 1/3 season list? I think it has something to do with the draft. This way they don't have to incorporate all the new picks into the Top 100.
  23. That's about what I'd expected. Wondered if Ray would sneak in - but I totally get it. 50 games doesn't change the past year and a half.
  24. I fixed your image, brwrsfan. You were linking the HTML page - and not the image directly. Just a quick update.
  25. Eric Longenhagen at Fangraphs said that he has heard that Schnell was falling down boards due to perceived risk (whatever that means). Eric A Longenhagen: In fact, we’ve heard the opposite, that Schnell is falling down other boards due to perceived risk Eric A Longenhagen: As far as Schnell is concerned from a talent perspective, there are lots of traits similar to Taylor Trammell a few drafts ago. Has that Trammell/Austin Meadows look at the plate, pull power, runs well, mostly gap-oriented swing. Like the player, just not at 4 given all the risk https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/eric-longenhagen-prospects-chat-may-fin/ Most of the mocks have him around the end of the 1st, early 2nd. Looks like he won't fall to us in the 2nd. Taylor Trammell - I liked that guy. He's put up some nice numbers for Cincy. I'd take a guy like that.
