  1. wow, we can't seem to lay off anything today. i wonder if the sun is causing a problem.
  2. He can play anywhere. Not well. But he can play anywhere. And he's got a mega watt smile.
  3. I'm guessing Bianchi as well. He hasn't exactly been lighting up things at Nashville, but he hasn't been bad. Maybe they just feel he's swinging a better bat now. Or maybe it's Pete Orr. That would be a sad state of affairs.
  4. It's hard to see Nori struggle, because I like the guy so much. He just seems like he loves playing. With regard to his hitting struggles this year, I suspect that the league simply catching up with him. I think in 2012 he caught people by surprise, and made some people pay for it by pounding a few HRs. I notice Nori takes what pitchers give him. If they pitch him away, he slaps it into left. If they come in on his hands, he yanks it down the line. I just think the league has figured out what not to do with him. Now he's just a slap hitter. The trade is certainly looking good for Milwaukee. Smith appeared to be a serviceable player, but has really blossomed in a full time relief role. There were hints of that last year, but it was such a small sample. Kudos to the team for recognizing something special in Smith.
  5. Unless Reynolds or Overbay is hurt - or really goes in the tank - I don't think the team will make a move at 1B. It's just not the team's style. They'll keep going with the 'guys who got us here' mentality. RRR and Melvin seem to really value clubhouse atmosphere and cohesion. I understand that. If anything, the club will maybe add a relief arm and/or IF/OF depth. But I don't think they'll make a move at 1B.
  6. What am going to do with my Falu jersey? I guess it'll go in the closet with my Lalli, Ransom, Izturis, Maysonet, Farris, Feliz Lopez, Josh Wilson, Almonte, Brandon Boggs, Brett Carroll, Jeremy Reed and Inglett jerseys.
  7. Joaquin Benoit would be an interesting (but expensive) addition. He's been awesome the last couple of years, including a 1.42 ERA this year (in 31 innings). However, he is expensive ($6 million in 2014 and $8 million in 2015, plus an option for 2016), and he'll be 37 next month. I generally worry about guys that old. But he'd be a great, power arm to go with K-Rod, Duke and Smith in the back end of the bullpen.
  8. I think a bullpen arm is a possibility. Outside of Duke, K-Rod and Smith, the pen has been pretty erratic and had some injuries. I think they'll wait until they see Henderson and Thornburg - I hope they are back by mid-July so that can happen. Kintzler scares me more than anyone in the pen. I actually think Wooten is decent. Nothing great, but a serviceable #5 or 6 type guy.
  9. Oh yes, now I remember! thnx Wasn't Duke warmed up at the time, but Roenicke told the umpire it was Smith who was coming in? I think it was relayed to the bullpen earlier to have Duke ready, when RRR had meant to have Smith, which caused the confusion. Once he told the ump Smith was coming in, they couldn't change it, and he has to face at least one batter.
  10. Dave Schoenfield of ESPN loves the video, and chides Matheny: http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/48691/nl-all-star-debate-vote-molina-or-lucroy I just want to tell Matheny to take the stick out of his butt. Life is too short for people getting all uptight over every little thing.
  11. Dave Cameron at Fangraphs, in a chat, had this comment when someone asked about Luc's grand slam last night: Man, that would set off the Dbacks. It might almost have been worth it. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/dave-cameron-fangraphs-chat-61814/#more-153774
  12. If the Brewers are looking for a power arm for the pen, perhaps Joaquin Benoit from San Diego would fit the bill. The guy is 36, but he's playing great this year (I'm sure his time in Petco helps). He's been a little erratic at times in his career, but generally, he's been good. He's signed through 2015 - at $7 million a year. That's pretty expensive, but not prohibitive. San Diego is the third worst team in baseball, so they might be happy to unload his contract. I honestly don't know what it would take to make such a trade. Unfortunately, teams seem to over pay for relief help during the season. Perhaps we are best to just wait until Henderson and Thornburg get healthy. Wooten and Kintzler just don't inspire me. I think they're okay, but nothing outstanding. Benoit's stats: http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/4588/joaquin-benoit
  13. Dave Schoenfield at ESPN had a nice headline for this drama: Gritty, gutty Diamondbacks in last place Just made me laugh. http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/48662/gritty-gutty-diamondbacks-in-last-place
  14. I loved this quote from Lohse after yesterday's game: "You know what?" Brewers starter Kyle Lohse said. "They won tough-guy points today. But I don't know where the stats are for those. We won the game because of that. It was pretty unnecessary." No better way to counter idiots than just winning. When Gibson seems more concerned about retaliating than winning, that team has a problem.
  15. It must have been the Duke Brothers from Trading Places that made the deal for him.
  16. The Brewers don't need an everyday position player, which is what I see Zobrist as. Sure he moves around the diamond, but he's rarely out of the lineup. Outside of Overbay, none of the starters or regular platoon guys are candidates to be replaced. This makes a guy like Zobrist overkill. If you can get him at a bargin price - great. I'd love to have him. But I doubt that's going to happen. He's going to cost something. Of our reserves, no one (except Maldonado) is playing well. Each guy, Falu, Herrera, Bianchi, Gindl and Schafer, is producing negative WAR (-1.5 combined this year for the group) this year. Guys like Schafer, Bianchi and Gindl all were positives last year (or at least not negatives). If those guys could bounce back and simply play like last season, we'd be much better off. Otherwise, you get a guy like Bonifacio. He's nothing great - but he is going to be able to back up multiple spots, handle a position for a few weeks if there's an injury, and ultimately not be a negative contributor (which is what we have now). And he won't cost a top prospect. However, Bonifacio might not be the best answer because he hasn't played short in a couple of years. I'm not sure how good (or bad) he would be at the position. Anyone you get would need to be able to play SS adequately. Again, if you can get Zobrist for a Hunter Morris-type player, by all means, jump all over it. Take on the salary. He'd be awesome to have. But I think it will take a lot more. In the end, we may just want to give Bianchi and Schafer another try (after they've had some success at Nashville).
  17. Why should Tampa be able to get quite a bit for Zobrist? 1. He's 33 years old 2. His stats have declined in back to back years 3. Tampa is terrible this year 4. I doubt they'd pick up his 7.5 million dollar option next year 5. Trading him would save penny pinching Tampa about 3 million this year and the 500K buyout for his option after the season. I'm pretty sure he'll get traded, but my guess is that Tampa won't get that much for him beyond saving over three million and at best a mid-level prospect unless he starts really raking soon. He's 33 years old and sporting a .712 OPS. Zobrist has put up the following fWAR: 2009: 8.5 2010: 3.7 2011: 6.3 2012: 5.8 2013: 5.4 2014: 1.5 (so far) Yes, he's had a down year in 2014, and he may well be on the decline. But the guy is still a good player. He's a great defender at 2B, LF and RF. At $7.5 million this year and next, he's a great bargain. It'll take more than a spare part or mid-level prospect to get Zobrist.
  18. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/06/athletics-acquire-brad-mills.html He's gotta be happy. Oakland's a good place to land. They're open to reclamation projects, the park is good for pitchers.
  19. I read before that draft that Kansas City was very interested in Medeiros at 17. At that spot, the $2.5 million is still a little high. I agree - I thought it was going to be a little lower than the $2.5 million. It would have been nice to save a couple of hundred grand to lure a few of extra draft picks. Oh well, that's life. I'm excited all three guys are signed and will be playing this year. I hated how all the top picks just waited until the last minute to sign, effectively wasting an entire year.
  20. I see Marco's fWAR is at -0.9 Ouch.
  21. I wouldn't have a problem if they simply optioned him to AAA. Tell the guy we know he's better than he's been pitching. Use AAA to figure things out. If this team was bad, it might be one thing to let him work out the issues in the big leagues. But we're in first place. His pitching is hurting the team, and we have some options to fill in for him in Fiers and Nelson. That said, like Yoshii8 predicts, I expect Marco to get several more starts. I expect he'll get to the all-star break before he gets taken out of the rotation.
  22. I'd say Bonifacio. He's on a team that stinks, so they don't really need him. He's not in their long term plans. He's not terribly expensive, and probably wouldn't cost a lot in terms of prospects. His ability to play all over the diamond is exactly what the team needs. Zobrist would be great as well, but he's a guy that should be playing every day, makes a lot more money, would cost a lot to acquire, and doesn't have a history of playing SS. The Brewers need a quality backup who can play SS. I don't know if Zobrist is that guy.
  23. My MLB.tv works fine using my Apple TV and an Ethernet connection. If I use my wifi, it has issues.
  24. Just the other day ESPN ran a great Outside the Lines story about Ellis. The guy never once took the mound in the big leagues without being high. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=Dock-Ellis
