  1. If teams are smart, they take out insurance policies for contracts like Fielder's and then they aren't wrecked for years to come. The problem isn't the insurance policy. Most teams have that for injuries. The problem is if Fielder comes back next year and just isn't any good because of the injury. Insurance doesn't cover bad play.
  2. Wasn't that the buzz on Sonny Gray too, when the Brewers passed on him (among others...) in the Draft of Great Shame? Someone should do a study of draft-time "might become a reliever" versus career outcomes. Exactly. Some people said he was destined for the bullpen. I liked Gray, but I remember the reports about him possibly heading to the bullpen. Draft of Great Shame - nice. Perhaps it will end up okay if Bradley and/or Jungmann turn out okay. There's still time.
  3. All top 20 lists should be in today. Thanks much.
  4. Any word on why Reed was put on the DL? Just curious.
  5. I see Chris McFarland was put on the DL. Lance Roenicke has been activated from the DL.
  6. Only 2 days left to submit your top 20 prospects! Please get them in asap! Thanks.
  7. They are both Latin American players we signed last summer. Neither has played yet. I had to look them both up as well!
  8. Bring up Green and let Overbay go. Green can play 3B and 1B. Bianchi can stay. He's a good glove. But he shouldn't be starting more than a handful of games. Having Green available let's us plug in a real 3B. I can understand getting rid of Bianchi. Let's just make sure the guy is an upgrade. Dump Herrera and bring up Gindl. I'd even send down Davis as well so he can get his act together. Or perhaps just platoon them. Just let Gindl start for an extended time. He was okay last year (.779 OPS in 132 ABs). He's shown limited splits over his minor league career. As for Wang, if you let him go bring back Gorzelanny or Henderson. Don't bring up Nelson so he can throw long relief in blowouts. That's a waste of the guy's future.
  9. How about we return Herrera to AAA, cut Overbay, then bring up Green and activate Gorzelanny. We get another arm in the pen, have Green to backup 1B and 3B. I guess you could keep Herrera and lose Bianchi, but I think Bianchi is a better player than Herrera - despite Herrera's ability to play OF and IF.
  10. I think it's true that contracts can't be based upon performance. They can be based on playing time (games played, starts, at bats, etc.). And they can be based on awards (all star appearance, silver slugger, gold glove, etc.). But I don't think you can put a cash incentive on things like the number of HRs a player hits or how many wins a pitcher has.
  11. Taylor Green has been pretty mediocre at Nashville, but he is shaking off a year of not playing ball due to injury. To be honest, he's not a great option, but Overbay really looks like he's done as a major leaguer, so I'd be fine with Green being brought up. Play a little 3B, a little 1B, pinch hit. Let's see how he can do. I like Overbay, but he's not been a decent hitter for a few years. Time to move on. Let's let Green sink or swim with the big club.
  12. Regarding Finnegan, I've read some reports saying he might become a reliever. But I wonder if some of that is that simple bias against smaller pitchers. The same thing was said about Lincecum coming out of college as well. If the club feels he's going to be a starter, I'm okay with him. But like others say, I don't want a reliever. As for Conforto, what are opinions about him? He's kind of a big guy. I'm worried he'll be strictly a bat - destined for 1B or LF. I think our position players could really use some athleticism, so he worries me a bit. But I've never seen him beyond a few highlight reels, so maybe others have a more nuanced view of him. With regard to Zimmer, I kind of like what I've read. He seems well rounded, and can yet fill out his frame a little more. I guess a lot depends on how much power to expect from him. I think he'd be good value at #12.
  13. Everyone, keep the lists coming. I want to be able to have them all within 5-6 days. Thanks!
  14. Overbay just looks awful at the plate. Just getting blown away. Herrera is pretty bad looking too.
  15. 42 degree day, cold, windy - not an ideal day for a guy coming off a pulled muscle. I can understand why they're not playing Ryan. I'd love Braunie to be in there, but I want to keep Braun healthy. If he's not 100%, they're wise to hold him out.
  16. Time to get some hits going. Our offense really needs to have a breakout game.
  17. nice job by reynolds. ditto wooten. tyler sure looked shaky again. it's the nature of the beast with relievers (i guess all pitchers).
  18. Kid in Washington threw 194 pitches the other day: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10935698/dylan-fosnacht-rochester-high-school-throws-194-pitches-14-innings
  19. Davis (Kentrail & Johnny) Diaz (Miguel, Brandon, Victor, and Juan) Gomez (Milton and Hector) Pena (Jose and Ariel) There are actually several more, but these are the ones that might involve votes. You the man. Thanks.
  20. Selection #15 - Los Angeles Angels Sean Newcomb - LHP - Hartford The Angels have the worst minor league system in all of baseball. The team desperately needs youth and athleticism all around the diamond. In Newcomb, the Angels get a big, imposing starting pitcher who can throw in the upper 90s. He doesn't have a lot of holes in his game, and should progress rather quickly through the system. The Angels would have loved to have gotten one of the 2nd tier bats (after Jackson), such as Zimmer, Gordon or Turner, but are more than happy with Newcomb. The southpaw immediately becomes the club's top minor league prospect.
