    Prado would be interesting because he would fill an organizational need beyond 2014. His numbers aren't very good this year, but he did the same thing in 2013. He had a .668 OPS prior to the all star break - then an .864 after the break. He's kind of been an up and down player throughout his career. I haven't seen him play this year - don't know if he looks like he's lost something. He's only 30, but it's not unheard of for a guy to take at that age. I wonder what it would take to get him. The team could take on more salary in exchange for lesser prospects.

    Chavez would have been a nice addition, but he hurt his knee a few days ago. No surgery required (yet), but when the guy says he heard a 'small pop' - that makes you worry. Especially with his injury history.

    Grant Brisbee at Baseball Nation did a satirical review of the baseball draft, essentially making fun of immediate grades and generic commentary that emerge (sort of like 'He could be great or flame out in A ball' - which essentially says nothing). In Estrada's defense, he's gone through these gopher ball spells before and eventually settled down (last year he gave up 14 HR in 69 innings prior to the all-star break, then 5 in 59 innings post break. In 2012, it was 11 HR in 51 innings pre break, followed by 7 HR in 87 innings post). However, it's never been this extreme. If the club is going to stick with him, you just hope he gets it together fast. Increased walk rates and increased HR rates just aren't a good combination.

    in order for a player to be up in september, he has to be on the 40-man roster. mills is not. thus, his presence on the team in september is far from a certain outcome. it is unclear if mills' opt-out clause requires him to be on the 25-man or 40-man by 15 june. he's on neither, so the 40-man would be the first step. green's clause just calls for him to be on the 40-man by 15 june. Thanks for the info. Can Hellweg get moved to the 60-day DL? That would clear up a spot. Also, I wouldn't cry if Herrera was off the 40-man roster. His ability to play a lot of positions (not very well) is about the only thing he brings to the table.

    While Mills has pitched well, I just don't see a spot for him this year. However, he could be a candidate next season for the bullpen (Zack Duke's success this year may easily price him out of Milwaukee in 2015). Maybe the Brewers can give him a financial incentive to waive his out clause, knowing he'll be up in September and be invited to camp next spring. But you would think that a team or two would take a flyer on the guy right now. It would be hard to turn that down. A minor trade might be in order - send Mills to a team that will add him to the big league roster in exchange for beads and trinkets. As for Green, I think he leaves. It's probably time to move on and get a fresh start somewhere. This team doesn't seem to think he's an option (not that he's slugging his way into the lineup). May as well move on.

    If you rate everyone's #1 pick at 50 points, #2 at 49, etc..., people can do 20, 25, or 50 without messing up the rankings. That was how I did it a few years back. The only real negative is that people that that rank all 50 have a pretty heavy influence on the tail end. The problem with this is that you need to have everyone fill out a complete ballot to avoid skewed results. To allow people to not vote for all 50 players (or whatever number we ask for) probably wouldn't affect your top 10ish list, but it can skew results in the mid/lower levels. Example, assuming you start at 50 points for the top slot, if PlayerA is on three lists at 18 (33 pts) , 19 (32 pts), and 20 (31 pts) - their total is 96 points. If PlayerB comes in at 15 (36 pts), 16 (35 pts) and 21 (30 pts), his total is 101. PlayerB is the higher ranked prospect. But let's say the third list stopped at 20 people - then PlayerB doesn't get the 30 points. It's now a zero. He's now at 71 points. Your results have been skewed. You need to ask for a number and require everyone to fill out that number for an accurate list. This is especially true when you have a limited number of ballots.

    Not sure if this was posted, but Troy Stokes signed for $400,000. The Crew saves $49,000. The Brewers have agreed to sign fourth-round choice Troy Stokes for $400K, reports Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com (via Twitter). Milwaukee will get to apply $49.3K towards other picks, as the 116th draft slot carried a $449.3K pool figure.     Interesting stat: Oakland is 1st in runs scored, 1st in OBP, but 18th in BA. They have a +125 run differential. Not too shabby.

    Dunn really does fit rather well. He'd cost next to nothing (the Sox would even pick up a lot of the remaining salary), his LH power bat would play well on this team, there's no long term commitment, and you're replacing a bad hitter in Overbay. The one thing that doesn't fit well is Dunn's defense. Even at 1B he's pretty bad (although I haven't seen him play there in a couple of years - perhaps he's better). One reason the Crew didn't want Morales was the perception that he would be a severe liability in the field. The same was true for Francisco. The good thing about Dunn is that you aren't required to pull the trigger on a trade any time soon. He's the kind of guy that will get through waivers in August due to his high salary. Of course, that means we have to stay with Overbay longer. But the longer we stick it out, the more teams fall out of contention and put guys on the trading block.

    I looked at prospect ranking from three sources: Baseball America, MLB.com, and minorleagueball.com. Using those three rankings (this is player rankings, not mock drafts), the players we picked averaged in rank as 20th (Harrison), 26th (Gatewood) and 28th (Kodi). It's kind of like we dealt the 12th, 41st and 50th picks for the 20th, 26th and 28th picks. I know that's not a perfect analogy, since we are skimping on some later picks, but it seems like a pretty nice move on our part. I don't know the players that well, but I'm excited by the upside they all offer. And I'm excited that we could manuver in such a way as to be able to sign all three players. I realize these guys have risks, but I like the gamble.

    The club lacked high upside players. They added a few with a little creativity. If we could add Lara and hang onto Wang (I giggled writing that), it really helps the system. Well played.

    I'm going to add that I'm very happy with draft (assuming we can sign everyone). I like that the team hasn't gone with the safe picks. We have enough 'solid' type prospects in our system. We need some potential stars. I don't think anyone can question Gatewood and Harrison. They were both potential 1st rounders, so to find them available is great value. Medeiros is certainly more controversial. But I guess the team sees the upside in him that others don't.
