  1. I have to agree that $2/20 was a pretty nice deal for the Mets. Not super cheap - but good. I would have been happy with this deal for us. Another thing to keep in mind is even if we offered the same to Ramos - even a little more - perhaps Ramos preferred NY as his home for the next few years. Just don't know. No matter, I'll be interested to see where we invest our money.
  2. Lowrie would be an awesome addition. It just comes down to money and years. I don't know what our budget is for 2019 (and beyond), but so much comes down to what we have available to spend. I believe the Crew was going to shop for a LH starter, a LH reliever (check), a catcher and 2B. We still have three spots to account for - and only so much money to spend. I'd love Lowrie, Grandal or Ramos, and Dallas Kuechel. But I doubt we are going to bump our payroll by $50M. I'm guessing something more like Ramos for $10-12M, Miley for $7-8M, and a 2B such as Murphy, Dietrich or Dozier for $5-6M. That's still around $23-25M - and I'm not sure even have that kind of cash to spend. And I'm not sure all those guys can be had for those prices. Oh well, we'll find out sooner or later.
  3. Another 2B goes off the board. Glad someone got Kinlser, as I didn't want him on our team. He was a good player, but at 36, his glove and bat have declined too much. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/12/padres-sign-ian-kinsler.html
  4. Dbacks aren't doing that. Huge advantage for Crew. Huge.
  5. I can't fathom the Crew not protecting him. Let Cedeno/Jennings go to free up the spot, but this was just poor roster management. Does it still qualify as poor roster management now that Olczak wasn't selected or is it possible Stearns & company just had the market accurately gauged all along? Every year we go through this with the Rule 5 draft. We fret over losing a specific player or three, and in the end, nothing usually (I stress usually) happens. I think every fan overvalues their own guys. They get swayed that Player A is really good due to some reason or another, and are convinced the rest of the world sees how good the player is as well. Truth is, these guys are fringe players - at best. Every team has their share of them. And in the end, the situation really just has to be right for a team to be willing to keep these guys on a roster all season. It doesn't mean you don't go after these guys, as there are always diamonds in the rough, but no point in putting time and money and energy into a guy that isn't likely to make your roster.
  6. Yeah, I couldn't believe we were messing with Miley. You just never know sometimes.
  7. Schrock is really interesting. Last year, his BAIP was .260. His career is .319, so there might be some serious bad luck in play. Dude makes contact and hits. No clue about his glove. And he's not going to hit for power. But he's got some interesting skills.
  8. Deal is for 2 years with a vesting option. Happ will get $34-35M in the two years, and the vesting option is worth $17M. Not bad for a 36 year old pitcher.
  9. No one really saw that one coming. Nice deal for Morton. And as noted, a good fit. Tampa needed another good starting pitcher. This fits the bill.
  10. It will be interesting to see how they divvy up playing time with Soler and Bonafacio in there as well. I really hope Phillips gets steady playing time for the Royals. They really need to phase out Gordon. He's only got one year left on his contract -- give him some DH time, occasional start, etc. But the other guys, including Phillips, are the team's future. Let Phillips and Hamilton and Solar and whomever get the bulk of the starts and see who sinks and who swims.
  11. Unless there are some trades made, I don't see the Brewers adding a Chacin-type player this off season UNLESS he is left-handed. Reports indicate the Crew has been linked to higher end starters (such as Thor) or left handers (Miley, Kluber, Happ, etc.). Adding a left handed starter makes sense for the team as all our starters are righties. Anderson, Davies, Chacin, Peralta, Woodruff, Burnes, Nelson, Guerra - there's little reason add a lower end right handed starter into this mix. In the end, I'm betting Miley comes back on a 2-year deal for around $15M. Just a wild guess. He seemed to fit into clubhouse well, and provided good production. But before we add a Miley, the team will likely pursue the higher end arms in the FA and trade market. If none of those options work out - then we'll go to the lower tier of players such as Miley or Gio on a one or two year deal. The club may also bring a veteran arm on a minor league contract - but nothing guaranteed.
  12. Could you explain this statement? I've never seen anything that says he's really bad - generally around average. I'm just wondering what you are using to arrive at this assessment. Please note that I haven't seen much of Ramos - so I don't have any pre-judgements other than the stats I see and some assessments I read. I'd be curious to what people are using to judge Ramos. Thanks.
  13. I'm betting someone snags Olczak. At worst, they give him a long look in spring training. A non-playoff team can afford to let him take some lumps.
  14. Lyles has a keen eye at the plate. He walked 33.3% of the time last season.
  15. Hamilton is a great fit for that OF. Perfect use of his defensive talents.
  16. Billy Hamilton to the Royals. 1-year, $4.25M, $1M buyout on a $7.5M option for 2020. The guy always seemed to get us. 7 of his career 21 HRs were against the Brewers.
  17. Holy crap. Who would have thought it would come to this. Shows you how quickly injuries and age can erode a player's skills.
  18. I like McCutchen. I'm happy he landed a really nice deal. Good for him.
  19. I've not seen anyone predicting this kind of years or money for Grandal. Generally it's been in the three year range, at $11-16M annually. MLB Trade Rumors had him at 4 years, but I believe that was done before he had the QO attached to him. No matter, most predictions have been for three years.
  20. If a team was willing to trade a prospect of Hiura's caliber, it would have happened by now. Countless teams have reportedly balked at the asking price of an Acuna, Robles, Bellinger, Tucker, Hiura, etc. At this point, in this market, a team isn't going to all of a sudden make someone like that available. You mean like Brinson? Who wasn't available in the Quintana talks but then was moved for Yelich. I have heard that Brinson was available, but the White Sox were not enamored with him. They had concerns about this swing and miss issues.
  21. The Dodgers are reportedly very interested in Kluber, and Alex Verdugo is someone the Tribe likes. Verdugo was #32 on MLB's Top 100 in 2018. High average guy who takes a lot of walks, doesn't strike out that much. Has hit .320+ at AAA over the last two years. He's major league ready, which would be perfect for Cleveland. In the end, we have to beat other teams' offers as well as put together an attractive package.
  22. I liked Harold Baines. Really good player. NOT a hall of fame player.
  23. JosephC, thanks for doing the value stuff when looking at trades. I love seeing it. Appreciate that you take the time to share this kind of thing.
  24. Profar is interesting for a bunch reasons. 1. He offers a bridge to Hiura. 2. He can play all over the diamond. Everyone loves versatility. 3. He's a switch hitter. Always nice to have. Last season he had a .792 OPS vs RHP, and a .795 OPS vs LHP. Career-wise he has hit right handers better .735 OPS vs .645 OPS - but he was very young and went through a lot of stuff - including injuries. If you got him, you would hopefully not have a guy who needed to be platooned. 4. He offers insurance at SS should Arcia have issues again at the plate. 5. Even if Hiura moves into 2B, Profar would be a valuable in 2020. 6. Hit pretty darn well last year. 20 HR, .793 OPS. Doesn't strike out a ton. We would have loved that kind of production at 2B last season. 7. With two years of control, he wouldn't cost that much. Trouble with Profar is that Texas probably wants one of our young arms, such as Peralta. I think he'd be a nice addition if you could get him at a reasonable price. Just not sure of his value.
