  2. Team USA 11, Solar Sox 3 This was Team USA's final game within the AFL season. J.J. Hardy went 0-for-1, and finishes at .219 in 32 AB's.. Team USA's final AFL numbers, including J.J.'s: www.baseballamerica.com/t..._787.shtml Rafters 7, Saguaros 3 Only rough outing for Ben thus far; Rickie continues to shine... The Rafters scored four runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by Jake Mauer (MIN), Michael Vento (NYY) and Terry Tiffee (MIN) and never looked back as the Rafters beat the Saguaros 7-3 in Peoria. Yankees prospect Ramon Ramirez (NYY) pitched five strong innings, allowed six hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out four to pick up his first victory as a Rafter. Ben Hendrickson (MIL) was tagged for six runs (five earned) and ten hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched and took the loss. One bright spot for the Rafters in the game was the relief pitching as Leonard Dinardo (NYM) and Franklin Francisco (TEX) combined to throw four and one-third innings without allowing a hit. Nook Logan (DET), Skip Schumaker (STL), Tiffee and Mauer led the way for the Rafters as they hit a combined .529 (9-for-17) and drove in four runs in the game. 3. Javelinas 6, Team USA 1 In this one, J.J. Hardy went 1-for-4 and was caught stealing. J.J.'s at .226 (7-for-31 with a .226 OBP as well -- no walks) in the still-small sample. Saguaros 9, Rafters 6 Chris Aguila (FLA), Jason Bourgeois (TEX), Mike Jacobs (NYM) and Jon Knott (SD) led the Saguaros to a 9-6 win over the Rafters in Scottsdale. Aguila, Bourgeois, Jacobs and Knott combined for eight of the Saguaros 12 hits. The Saguaros got on the board in the second inning when Marlins prospect Jason Stokes led off with a triple and scored on single by Josh Willingham (FLA). Knott followed with a two run homerun. Brewers prospect Rickie Weeks reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a single by Bourgeois. Weeks scored from third base on a pick off attempt to first base by the Rafters to give the Saguaros a 4-0 lead. Yankees prospect Michael Vento scored first for the Rafters. Vento led off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a double off the padding off the centerfield wall by Rob Bowen (MIN). The Rafters continued to chip away at the Saguaros lead in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Rafters added five runs off a triple by Nook Logan (DET), a triple by Jamie Athas (SF), and a home run by Vento. The Rafters trailed the Saguaros by one run at the end of seven innings. The Saguaros pulled away from the Rafters in the top of the ninth when they added two runs by Weeks and Aguila. In their final comeback attempt, the Rafters fell short as they left the bases loaded to end the game. Logan and Vento led the Rafters offense combining to hit for the cycle. Pitcher Mark Woodyard (DET) took the loss for the Rafters. For the Saguaros, Cliff Bartosh (SD) was credited with the win and Lincoln Holdzkom (FLA) notched the save. Rickie Weeks continues to get on base at a lethal pace, even when the hits aren't dropping; tough size 5 collar for Brad Nelson, to borrow a Jim Powell phrase; John Novinsky returned to the mound, still trying to have a scoreless outing; Ben Hendrickson makes another start on Thursday... 4. Not a lot of online information available on Dave Bradley, but interestingly, twice Bradley won an award named for Kent Tekulve. This 1999 article discusses that and summarizes the college numbers that earned Bradley the honors he received: www.marietta.edu/~marc/99...rts/3.html Bradley's roster profile featuring his 2002 numbers and achievements: www.washingtonwildthings....1052508835
  5. The Brewers have provided us with info on RHP John Novinsky (DeJean trade with St. Louis) based on our inquiry. Thanks again to the folks in the offices there: He's a taxi squad guy meaning he is only available to pitch on Wed/Sat. unless an injury to another player would necessitate him pitching on another day. He has had some back soreness - skipped a couple of outings as precautionary, also was not needed.
  6. The Brewers have dipped into the independent league ranks to ink a new RHP for the organization, initially assigned to High Desert, but expected to vie for a starting spot in Huntsville, as noted in this press release: www.washingtonwildthings....s.cgi?id=2 Baseball America 2003 complete numbers on Dave Bradley: www.baseballamerica.com/c...adley%2C+d
  7. Team USA 17, Saguaros 6 Team USA had ten extra base hits in the game and scored in each of the final seven innings en route to a 17-6 victory over the Saguaros at the Peoria Sports Complex. Blue Jays prospect Gabe Gross led the way for the Red, White and Blue going 3-for-5 with four runs scored. The Saguaros sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning highlighted by a three run homer by Adrian Gonzalez (FLA) to deep right field. After the Gonzalez homer, the Saguaros scored the other two runs on four consecutive hits, driving in Josh Willingham (FLA) and David Wright (NYM). Team USA starter Adam Wainwright only lasted two-thirds of an inning pitched, yielding six hits and all five runs in the opening frame. Team USA chipped away at the 5-0 deficit and took the lead for good in the sixth inning when Gerald Laird singled home Joe Mauer. In the seventh, the Americans send up nine men to the plate and scored four times to put the game out of reach. In the ninth, Jeremy Reed hit a two run homer to right to cap a five run ninth inning for Team USA, which again sent nine men to the dish. John Van Benschoten pitched four scoreless innings for Team USA en route to his first victory of the season. Joselo Diaz (NYM) took the loss for the Saguaros. David Krynzel on base two more times, including that walk I've been asking for http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif , but is now only 2-for-6 in SB attempts, as that part of his game continues to suffer in 2003. Kade Johnson on base three more times, as he continues to make the most of his backup role for the team. J.J. Hardy chipped in with two hits, one a double, and two RBI for Team USA. We'll try to find out from the Brewers if RHP John Novinsky has been "shut down" for the fall. 8. J.J. Hardy was 0-for-2 for Team USA Monday, now 4-for-21 in the early going (no walks). Rickie Weeks getting on base at a .436 clip and is 4-for-4 in SB's. David Krynzel's .318 BA is nice, but zero walks vs. 44 AB's is still troubling; 2-for-5 in SB attempts looks familiar as well, unfortunately. Ben Hendrickson and Tim Bausher have been among the early AFL pitching stars. Peoria Saguaros season-to-date numbers (including Brad Nelson, Kade Johnson, and John Novinsky as well): www.baseballamerica.com/t..._784.shtml
  9. RHP Tim Bausher actually got the start for the Saguaros on Friday, allowing five base runners and a wild pitch in his two innings of work, but limiting the damage to just one run (the first he's allowed in 6.2 IP). We haven't seen John Novinsky in a while after three ineffective appearances thus far. Days off will continue for Rickie Weeks and David Krynzel as the team is idle until Monday. Brad Nelson and Kade Johnson combine to go 0-for-5 with four K's, although Brad scored after a HBP. In 172 AB's since leaving High Desert for Huntsville, Nelson is hitting .203. Brad's Huntsville OPS was .589. His OPS in 29 AFL AB's is .433, and he's struck out in 10 of 31 plate appearances. We'll see if his bat comes alive should he be protected by Weeks and Prince Fielder in a probable 2004 Huntsville lineup. Team USA won their sixth straight (now 6-1); no box score available, and J.J. Hardy wasn't mentioned in the recap of the 11-1 victory. Team USA does play again on Saturday. GAME DATE: 10/17/03 PEORIA SAGUAROS 4 AT SCOTTS. 10. where was this list taken from, is there a list for other organizations as well?? Say what you will about the lack of minor league coverage on the Brewers' own web site, but they do keep all their minor league roster pages accurate to within a day or two (it's actually SportsTicker that updates those pages). We're simply able to monitor the pages day-to-day and take notes when the occasional change is made. So it's one of the several sources we make use of trying to keep up with the transactions. Again, within a week or so, Baseball America will release a list similar to this one from last year: www.baseballamerica.com/t...rfa02.html Maybe I missed it, but what is the status of Jason Shelley? Nice catch, deeswan, as that's one of the first things we checked, too. He's still listed on Huntsville's roster. We were either A.) confused as to whether the Brewers control him for several years down the road or B.) unaware of a one-year contract he may have recently signed to remain in the organization. We'll try to figure things out, but for now, are glad to see his name in place.
  11. Mass Brew---Ciprian, Franco, and Mateo were released back in June and are no longer with the system. Lopez isn't with them any more either. Thanks, brewcru1, I've adjusted the status of the players in "bold" in the post above. Info always appreciated!
  12. As we've mentioned all season, minor league contracts expire on October 15th each year. For the Brewers this season, there were 25 players who they did not "control" automatically. Of these 25, they came to terms with three to extend through 2004, as mentioned here last month (RHP's Ben Ford, Jason Childers, and Tim Bausher). The remaining 22 players did not mutually agree to contracts with the Brewers before gaining their free agency. It's likely in some cases, the player would have been willing to re-sign, but the team did not show an interest. For a few others perhaps, the Brewers expressed an interest but the player chose to take his chances elsewhere. The Brewers can still compete with other teams for these players. For instance, infielder Keith Luuloa re-signed in late October last year. The following players are no longer with the organization, according to mlb.com. INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Mike Buddie RHP Pascual Coco LHP Derrin Ebert RHP Roberto Giron LHP Derek Lee RHP Robert Marquez LHP Travis Miller RHP David Pember RHP Ruben Quevedo LHP Nate Teut C Alex Delgado IF Keith Luuloa 2B Richard Paz 3B Wilton Veras OF Jason Conti 1B/OF Doug Jennings OF Jim Rushford HUNTSVILLE: LHP Jeff Hundley RHP Ken Ray C Mike Kremblas HIGH DESERT: RHP Aaron Dean OF John Toner The Indianapolis roster is down to only eight players: RHP Francisco Campos (the only Brewer property playing in the Mexican Winter League, which is underway), RHP's Jason Childers, Ben Ford, and John Novinsky, LHP John Foster, IF Steve Scarborough, and OF's Ryan Knox and Pete Zoccolillo. The Brewers' 40-man roster remains at 35 for now. Perhaps "minorfan" or another in the know will fill us in as to whether concrete negotiations took place with any of the 22 now ex-Brewers.
  13. Ben Hendrickson started out hot and hasn't let up since arriving in Arizona; J.J. Hardy did not play in Team USA's game Thurdasy... Rafters 4, Saguaros 3 Three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Rafters breathing room as they beat the Saguaros 4-3 in Scottsdale. The Saguaros got on the board in the first inning when Mets prospect David Wright hit a solo shot into right center field. They added a run in the third off the bat of Dave Krynzel (MIL) whose sac fly drove in Milwaukee teammate Brad Nelson. Lance Niekro (SF) scored the first run for the Rafters in the fifth when an error by Rickie Weeks (MIL) allowed Ferdin Tejada (NYY) to reach first base safely. The Rafters trailed the Saguaros 2-1 until the seventh inning when the Rafters were able to capitalize on Saguaros mistakes. With Michel Hernandez (NYY) and Tejada on base, Jake Mauer (MIN) stepped to the plate and hit a ground ball to Weeks who misplayed it allowing Mauer to reach first to load the bases. Detroit prospect Nook Logan was patient at the plate and earned a walk that scored Hernandez to tie the game 2-2. Shaun Boyd (STL) followed with a two run single to give the Rafters a 4-2 lead. The Saguaros made one last push in the ninth when Weeks reached base on a single and was then thrown out at second on a hit by Wright. Texas prospect Adrian Gonzalez followed with a walk. Josh Willingham (FLA) drove in Weeks with a single for the Saguaros last run of the game. Willingham had two of the Saguaros six hits. 14. Question: do the Brewers instruct all their minor leaguers to slide feet-first all the time in order to avoid injury? (didn't help Charlie Fermaint in Arizona or Lou Palmisano in Helena)...for the Huntsville guys, was David feet-first throughout his 2003 season?

  16. Plenty of offense in the early going for the 71 folks in attendance... Saguaros 8, Javelinas 6 Dave Krynzel (MIL) and Ramon Nivar (TEX) hit back-to-back homers and combined to go 6-for-10 at the plate with five RBI?s as the Saguaros beat the Javelinas 8-6 in Peoria. With the victory, the Saguaros remain a game behind the Solar Sox in the American Division. The turning point in the game came in the top of the ninth inning with the score tied at six apiece. With one out, Nivar singled and stole second with Rickie Weeks (MIL) at the plate. As the throw from Michael Tonis (KC) sailed into the outfield, Nivar went to third base. After Weeks struck out for the second out of the inning, the Javelinas intentionally walked Adrian Gonzalez (TEX). Chris Aguila (FLA) singled to drive in Nivar to break the tie and give the Saguaros a 7-6 lead. The Saguaros added an insurance run when David Wright (NYM) drove in Gonzalez with an RBI single. Padres prospect Matt Hampton picked up the victory in relief for the Saguaros as he pitched 2 1/3 no hit innings and struck out four. Krynzel halves his HR total from the 2003 Southern League season (he had two). Weeks now has two errors in four games at 2B and one in two games at SS. Brad Nelson's double was his first extra-base hit (now 5-for-24). Neither Krynzel nor Nelson have walked in a combined 55 AB's. J.J. Hardy came in late in Team USA's 6-2 win on Tuesday and went 0-for-2. He's 2-for-11 with zero walks thus far. Saguaros get back on track, 8-3 Rickie Weeks gets in a game at SS -- gets on base twice via BB and HBP, OBP of .417 in six games; day off for Krynzel, Nelson, and Johnson; Ben Hendrickson gave up his first run of the year on a first-inning HR ball to Tampa Bay's Jonny Gomes -- Ben's only allowed seven baserunners in eight innings, off to a fine start; as usual, it's a Sunday off for all AFL teams... And yes, it's silly to try to read anything into five AB's other than saying that at least four of them weren't very good http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  20. game was rained out today There are two Peoria teams; the one with the Brewers' kids wasn't scheduled to play... J.J. Hardy's debut with Team USA in the AFL was a bit less than scintillating; starting at SS and hitting ninth, Hardy struck out in each of his three plate appearances -- just shaking the rust off, no doubt... mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/ml...;fext=.jsp
  21. The Saguaros are off today (Friday). Obviously, the probable starters listed for Thursday earlier in the week were incorrect, as Ben Hendrickson didn't get Thursday's start, which is good, given the lopsided loss. David Krynzel did find a way to contribute in Thursday's game: The Desert Dogs got on the board in the bottom of the third when J.R. House (PIT) blasted a triple into deep center field. Nick Swisher (OAK) hit a single to left, which scored House to tie the game 1-1. J.T. Stotts (OAK) singled and Rich Thompson (PIT) dropped a bunt in front of the catcher to reach first safely and load the bases. Rodney Choy-Foo (CLE) came to the plate and belted a double into left field to score Swisher and Stotts. Thompson was thrown out at home on a bullet by Saguaros outfielder Dave Krynzel (MIL) for the first out of the inning and advanced Choy-Foo to third. Johnson blasted a double off the batters eye to score Choy-Foo for the fourth and final run of the inning.

  23. I'm sorry the stats won't line up perfectly below, but you'll be able to get the gist of things. There were no survivors from this year's Venezuelan League. In the Dominican, it appears that four position players (no pitchers) survived. The prize seems to be 2B Hernan Iribarren, who has put up an .840 OPS in 426 DSL at-bats. Keep in mind that the Brewers chose not to include their latin league players in this year's media guide. As always with these players, our info is limited to stat lines. But perhaps we'll see some of these names in Arizona. Players in bold below are still with the system. It is suggested that you access Brewerfan's Player Index Page (linked below), and then use the "filter" option to pull up only the DSL players. You'll then be able to view the four Brewerfan Player Profile Pages on these players. For the outfielders you see, it may list LF, CF, or RF. That's just a guess on our part -- squarepusher, we could probably use a generic "OF" designation there. 24. Like Cody McKay did back on October 1st, Indianapolis OF Mark Smith has chosen to take free agency immediately. He was eligible to do so when he was removed from the 40-man roster recently. For the moment, two others eligible to do the same are still listed on the Indianapolis roster, that being RHP Ruben Quevedo and OF Jason Conti. McKay and Smith's names have been removed.
  25. AFL note: 2002 first-rounder Rickie Weeks (Brewers) scored five times, drew a pair of walks and swiped a pair of bases in his first four games of the season. He was second in the league with a .500 batting average and fifth with an on-base percentage of .533 through October 6.
