  2. Desert Dogs 7, Saguaros 1 Not a lot of Brewer "stuff" here, as was the case in the Saguaros' first mlb.com audio game. I may check out the archived ninth inning later on to hear what they're saying about Tim Bausher... Pirates prospects Rich Thompson and J.R. House each had two hits in the game to lead the Desert Dogs offense as they defeated the Saguaros 7-1 in Mesa. The Desert Dogs scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a base hit to right field by Dan Johnson (OAK) scoring Freddie Bynum (OAK), a sacrifice fly by Nick Swisher (OAK) and a RBI double to center by Kelly Shoppach (BOS) scoring Johnson. The Saguaros had a good day defensively as Drew Meyer (TEX) and Chris Aguila (FLA) each had an outfield assist which killed two Desert Dog rallies and prevented additional runs from scoring. Saguaros starting pitcher Kyle Evans (CLE) allowed three hits and only one earned run in five innings to pick up the win and improve his record to 3-1 on the season. Relievers Todd Pennington (CLE), Chris Mabeus (OAK) and Bryan Hebson (BOS) showed dominance on the mound and shut the door on the Saguaros offense as they combined to throw four shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five. 5. Saguaros 9, Desert Dogs 8 Good day all around for the four Brewer bats; Tuesday's game is available via mlb.com audio at 2:00 PM Central; broadcasts are archived, so we can check in later if a Crew member does something spectacular; Ben Hendrickson was not listed as the probable starter... A passed ball allows Adrian Gonzalez (TEX) to reach base and cap off a five run rally as the Saguaros come from behind to defeat the Desert Dogs 9-8 at the Peoria Sports Complex. In the eighth inning, the Saguaros sent 10 men to the plate and scored five runs on an RBI double by Jon Knott (SD), a single by Rickie Weeks (MIL) driving in Kade Johnson (MIL) and Knott and an error on Desert Dogs pitcher Mike Johnston (PIT) bringing home Dave Krynzel (MIL). The Desert Dogs took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when they also sent 10 batters to the plate, but exploded for six runs on four hits and four walks. Nick Swisher (OAK) started the scoring when he doubled to the gap in left field, scoring Dan Johnson (OAK) and Jeremy Owens (BOS). After a Tony Schrager (BOS) walk to load the bases, Pirates prospect Chris Duffy was walked to force in a run. Rich Thompson?s (PIT) RBI single drove in Corey Smith (CLE) to give the Desert Dogs a 4-3 lead. After Freddie Bynum (OAK) struck out for the second out of the inning, Pirates prospect J.R. House single driving in Duffy and Schrager to give the Desert Dogs a 6-4 lead. Saguaros reliever Leonard Dinardo (NYM) pitched the final two innings and earned his first win of the season. 7. Saguaros 11, Javelinas 3 Only one Brewer played, but boy, did he ever. For the second time in less than a week, LF Brad Nelson reached base five times in a game, Saturday stroking four singles and drawing a walk. While Brad's got his OBP up to .333 after a tough start, only one of his 17 base hits thus far has gone for extra bases (a double). Looking forward to him ripping with average and power again when his Huntsville season opens up in April; next game on Monday -- audio broadcast on Tuesday... The Saguaros sent 10 batters in the top of the sixth inning and scored six runs on five hits as the Saguaros defeated the Javelinas 11-3 at the Peoria Sports Complex. In the inning, the Saguaros scored all six runs on a two RBI single by J.J. Furmaniak (SD), back-to-back sacrifice fly RBI?s from Padres prospects Rico Washington and Jake Gautreau and back-to-back RBI doubles by Adrian Gonzalez (TEX) and Chris Aguila (FLA). Expos prospect Chris Schroder took the loss for the Javelinas as he was tagged for five hits and six runs (five earned) in just two-thirds innings pitched. Alan Webb (SD) allowed one run in three relief innings to even his record to 1-1 on the season. Gautreau, Furmaniak and Brad Nelson (MIL) were the three offensive stars for the Saguaros as they combined to go 10-for-13 (.769) with five RBI?s and six runs scored. Nelson led all hitters, going a perfect 4-for-4 on the day. White Sox prospect Aaron Miles led the Javelinas offense going 3-for-4 with two singles, a triple, one RBI and a run scored. Javelinas catcher Jim Horner (SEA) also added two hits including a double and scored a run in the game. 8. The young (17 year-old) South African infielder, Jonathan Phillips, has been removed from the Arizona Brewer roster on the Brewers' own site. Until we see an official transaction, we'll go on the assumption that he was released, which is normally the case when a name is removed this time of year. Given Phillips' home country, it's possible he left on his own -- we'll probably find out down the road. Phillips' 2003 numbers: www.baseballamerica.com/c...ips%2C+jon Of course, we hope this wasn't all due to the hard time we gave Phillips' about his Dodger visor: pub123.ezboard.com/fbrewe...1784.topic
  9. Saguaros 7, Javelinas 6 It's only 27 AB's, but Kade Johnson's having a nice fall, with an OPS of .971; David Krynzel reached base twice and stole a base; Rickie Weeks had a base hit and sac fly, but was caught stealing for the first time in seven attempts and committed his eighth error in 14 games in the field. Ramon Nivar (TEX) slid under the tag of catcher Jim Horner (SEA) for the game winning run as the Saguaros scored four times in the bottom of the ninth and came from behind as the Saguaros edged the Javelinas 7-6 at the Peoria Sports Complex. In a game that featured three errors and sloppy defense from both teams, only one of the Saguaros? seven runs was earned. Saguaros starting pitcher Nick Regilio (TEX) pitched five strong innings and allowed two hits, one walk and one run while striking out seven. Marlins prospect Lincoln Holdzkom pitched the ninth inning to earn his first victory of the season. Gary Majewski (CWS) pitched only one-third of an inning and was roughed up for three hits and four runs (none earned) and took the loss for the Javelinas. Byron Gettis (KC) and Hunter Brown (SEA) led the offensive attack for the Javelinas as each went yard in the game and combined to drive in and score half of the team?s six runs. 13. Regarding RHP Ricardo Gomez: As squarepusher found for his player profile page, Gomez is listed at a slender 6'2", 165, and will be 26 next June. We've learned from the Brewers that Gomez was in the Yankees' system. It seems he spent time at Staten Island in 2000 and 2001. For the last two years, he's pitched overseas, although we don't have details on the where's and how's. Perhaps he's another starter slated to compete for a spot in Huntsville, while serving his offseason roster time with the Mavs. Not sure how the signing came about, but it is a pretty unique signing based on Gomez's overseas activity the past two seasons. Outside the box doesn't always help, but it rarely hurts (Takahito Nomura aside...)
  14. Good to note Kade gunned down 2 out of the three runners. Extra impressive as a DH. That throw to second from the dugout is a bear http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  15. According to the transaction page at milb.com, the Brewers have signed a right-handed starting pitcher by the name of Ricardo Gomez to a 2004 High Desert contract. We've asked the Brewers to give us a hint as to his background, as there really is no record of any R. Gomez who pitched during 2003, including Latin leagues. Feel free to hunt until we update your further.
  16. Scorpions 8, Saguaros 1 Quiet news day -- Kade and Brad with 1-for-3 efforts... Astros prospect Greg Powell scattered four hits and allowed only one run (unearned) in six innings as the Scorpions won their sixth consecutive game, defeating the Saguaros 8-1 at the Peoria Sports Complex. With the win, the Scorpions move past the Saguaros for second place in the American Division and trail the first place Solar Sox by three and one-half games. The Scorpions got on the board in the top of the first inning when Dernell Stenson (CIN) drove in James Loney (LA) with a two out RBI single to center field. Loney and Stenson each had two hits in the game and collectively drove in two runs and scored three times. The Saguaros scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Jake Gautreau?s (SD) RBI groundout scoring Justin Huber (NYM). Gautreau and J.J. Furmaniak (SD) each finished with two hits in the game. Colin Porter (HOU) led all hitters at the plate with four hits in five at-bats. Dallas McPherson (ANA) also had a good day at the dish as he went 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored. 17. Thanks as always, DHonks. Rickie Weeks 0-for-4 with four K's -- so how is the beer at AFL games, Honks? The cause of selective memory? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Weeks looks great out there. Scorpions 6, Saguaros 3 The Scorpions sent nine men to the plate and rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth as they came from behind to defeat the Saguaros 6-3 in Scottsdale for their fifth consecutive victory. With the win, the Scorpions move back to .500 (11-11) and trail the first place Solar Sox by only three and a half games. Diamondbacks prospect Brandon Medders struck out the side in the ninth inning for his second save of the season. Saguaros starting pitcher Ben Hendrickson (MIL) was in total command on the mound as he scattered only two hits and struck out seven in five innings of shutout ball. Marlins prospect Josh Willingham gave the Saguaros a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Ramon Nivar (TEX). In his next at bat in the sixth inning, he took Scorpions reliever Kyle Edens (CIN) deep to give the Saguaros a 2-0 lead. GAME DATE: 10/29/03 PEORIA SAGUAROS 3 AT SCOTTS. 20. A total of 76 runs scored in three AFL games Tuesday -- just wild, wacky offense. Brad Nelson on base five times in six plate appearances in a monster game, Rickie Weeks on base four times despite just one hit -- Weeks leads his team with four HBP; David Krynzel's tough week continued, although he drove in a run... Saguaros 19, Solar Sox 8 Solar Sox pitchers had a rough day on the mound as they walked 13 Peoria batters including five in the bottom of the third inning, and hit three in the game as the Saguaros trounced the Solar Sox 19-8 at the Peoria Sports Complex. In addition, both sides combined for seven errors in the game. Kelly Johnson (ATL) had a tough day in the field, committing two errors in the bottom of the fourth inning which set up a five run inning for the Saguaros. David Wright (NYM), Brad Nelson (MIL) and Jason Bourgeois (TEX) each had three hits in the game and combined to drive in eight of the Saguaros? 19 runs. Solar Sox hitters Jayson Nix (COL), Delmon Young (TB) and Johnson each hit solo homers in the game. Saguaros reliever Franklin Francisco (TEX) pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory and raise his record to 3-1 for the season. Solar Sox starting pitcher Brett Evert (ATL) gave up eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in two and one-third innings to take the loss. 21. Don't worry about catching the audio archive of this one. David Krynzel's suddenly no longer at .318, as was the case a few days ago, and projected over a 600 AB season, would walk exactly ten times -- sample is now at 60 AFL at-bats... Solar Sox 3, Saguaros 1 Solar Sox pitchers Dewon Brazelton (TB), Carlos Hines (TB), Justin Huisman (COL) and Aaron Rakers (BAL) threw a combined one-hitter as the Solar Sox beat the Saguaros 3-1 in Mesa. In his last three starts, Brazelton has gone 3-0 with a microscopic 0.60 ERA and 0.80 WHIP and allowed only six hits, six walks and one earned run in 15 innings of work while striking out 17 batters. With the win, Brazelton improves to 4-0 on the season and joins fellow Solar Sox teammate Aaron Rakers (BAL) as the only four game winners in the AFL. The Solar Sox scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning on RBI singles from Brendan Harris (CHN), Adam Stern (ATL) and Richard Lewis (ATL). For the game, Lewis led the Solar Sox at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Brazelton?s bid for a shutout was denied in the top of the fifth inning when Jason Stokes (FLA) hit a one out solo homer to deep left field to cut the lead to 3-1. Saguaros relievers Cliff Bartosh (SD) and Leonard Dinardo (NYM) combined to throw four shutout innings in the game, allowing four hits and one walk while striking out two. 22. Several former Brewers, but no current members of the organization, are toiling in the Venezuelan winter league, which is underway. The Brewers' Francicso Campos has made two fine starts for Mazatlan in the Mexican winter league. He's the only Brewer property working in Mexico. Now 31, he's just a curioisity at this point: www.baseballamerica.com/c...mpos%2C+fr The Dominican winter league begins play later this week. Rosters have yet to be released. We know Corey Hart's playing winter ball in Puerto Rico this year. That's usually the last of the winter leagues to begin, likely within two weeks, though. We'll keep an eye out on the Dominican and Puerto Rican rosters when released.

The game?s only homer came in the top of the seventh inning when Saguaros DH Mike Jacobs (NYM) broke a 3-3 tie with a solo homer into the right field bullpen. In the bottom of the frame, the Desert Dogs tied it at four apiece when Nick Swisher (OAK) scored on a RBI groundout by Tribe prospect Corey Smith. 24. Saguaros 3, Desert Dogs 2 Closer, starter, middle reliever, it doesn't matter. In a variety of those roles covering seven "lights-out" appearances thus far, RHP Tim Bausher has been, perhaps rightly so, one of the talks of the entire league -- wow... The Saguaros scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning on Chris Aguila's (FLA) solo blast and David Wright's (NYM) double driving in Adrian Gonzalez (FLA) and Josh Willingham (FLA) as the Saguaros beat the Desert Dogs 3-2 at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Desert Dogs ended the shutout in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI groundout by Rodney Choy Foo (CLE) scoring fellow Tribe teammate Corey Smith. Smith led all hitters in the game, going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and a run scored. One inning later, J.R. House (PIT) made in a 3-2 game on a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Rich Thompson (PIT). Saguaros reliever Tim Bausher (MIL) allowed only two hits in three shutout innings to pick up his second victory of the season. Matt Hampton (SD) pitched the final one and one-thirds innings and struck out three while allowing only one hit to earn the save.
