  3. Inland Empire (Mariners) 11, High Desert 4 High Desert Site Game Summary: You can just feel any last smidgen of enthusiasm being sucked out of these Maverick game summaries -- what a miserable season... ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks dropped their second straight game, losing the first game of a three-game set to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 11-4 at Mavericks Stadium on Tuesday night. After allowing two runs and four hits in the first inning, 66ers starter Troy Cate settled down and picked up the win. Cate (4-8) allowed three runs in seven innings to earn his second straight win against the Mavs. Brad Nelson and Jason Belcher each had an RBI hit in the first as the Mavs jumped out to a 2-0 lead. The 66ers didn?t let it last for long however, as they scored two in the second with a two-run double by Luis Oliveros to tie the game at 2-2. They scored two more in the third off Mavs starter Dan Hall (6-7) to take a 4-2 lead. They would add three more in the fourth and chase Hall after only 3.2 innings. Two errors by third baseman Froilan Villanueva in the sixth allowed the 66ers to take a 9-2 lead against Mavs reliever Justin Gordon. They also scored two runs in the seventh off reliever Tommy Marx. The Mavs closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Todd West?s third hit of the game brought in Chris Morris, who also had three hits. West grounded into a double play in the ninth for the Mavs last run, making the score 11-4. Inland Empire?s Dustin DeLucchi, Evel Bastida and Cristian Guerrero each had three hits for the 66ers. The Mavs fall to 25 games under .500 for the first time this year at 28-53 overall. In the second half, they are now 3-8 and 5.5 games behind first place Lake Elsinore. On Wednesday night, the Mavs send Danny Kolb (3-6) to the hill against Cha Seung Baek (3-1) of Inland Empire at 7:05 (9:05 Central). 5. Richmond (Braves) 5, Indianapolis 3 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The visiting Richmond Braves (37-49) earned a split of the four-game series by defeating the Indianapolis Indians 5-3 Tuesday night at Victory Field. Former Indian Damon Hollins hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning off Tribe starting pitcher Joe Roa to push Richmond into the early lead. Roa (2-2) then allowed an additional run in the top of the third when Travis Wilson doubled home Adam LaRoche which gave the Braves a 4-0 lead. Three Richmond batters collected three hits on the day, as Jesse Garcia, LaRoche, and Wilson combined to go 9-for-14 in the contest. Richmond starter Chris Fussell (5-8) earned the win with a 6.1 inning, two-run effort in which he was able to scatter nine hits while striking out five. The Indians stranded six base runners over the first three innings against Fussell, scoring only a single run in the home half of the third inning when Jim Rushford scored on an RBI single by Cody McKay. Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tribe loaded the bases with one out to force Fussell from the game. Reliever Buddy Hernandez entered the game and plunked Rushford with a pitch to force home Doug Jennings from third, but then got Mark Smith to ground into one of three Indianapolis double plays to end the inning and the threat. Richmond scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth before Joe Dawley was brought on to close out the bottom half of the inning. Jason Conti greeted Dawley with a solo home run to open the ninth, but Dawley quickly retired the next three batters to earn his ninth save of the season. The Indians (38-45) will travel to Columbus for a brief two-game series with the Clippers before returning to Victory Field on Friday to open an eight-game homestand on the Fourth of July against the Louisville Bats. 12. From SportsTicker's Daily Highlights: HUNTSVILLE (SOU) 3B COREY HART went 4-for-4 with three RBI, four runs scored and three stolen bases in a 15-3 win over the Birmingham Barons. Hart was hit by a pitch and stole his seventh base of the year in the first inning. He then drew a walk, swiped both second and third and scored on a fielder's choice by OF NOOCHIE VARNER in the third. In the fourth, the 6-6, 200-pounder delivered a two-run single, ripped an RBI double in the seventh and singled and scored in the eighth. In 25 games in the month of June, Hart plated 20 runs and scored 16 times. Varner, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the contest, is hitting .359 (23-64) with 18 RBI over his last 19 games. He was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on May 27 for outfielder Alex Sanchez.

  17. In progress: Indianapolis 3, Richmond (Braves) 2, after one inning Bill Hall is in CF for Indianapolis again tonight. Jason Conti has really struggled, and if you look at the other Indy OF'ers (Jennings, Rushford, Smith, and Zoccolillo), there really isn't a viable backup CF option on the team when you wish to give Conti the night off. Nice for the athletic Hall, but Podsednik, Krynzel, etc. have nothing to worry about as far as long-term CF competition. David Manning (two hits, three walks) really struggled in the first. Can't afford a short outing after yesterday's 12-inning, multi-reliever game. He was bailed out by a Mark Smith outfield assist to the plate ending the inning. Steve Scarborough lined a base hit to extend his hitting streak to nine. He's been extra hot -- good for him. It's too bad he can't erase the first two months of the season off the books, he'll be fighting all second half to bring the numbers up to respectable levels. Pete Zoccolillo with a scheduled day off today.

INDIANAPOLIS (INT) OF PETE ZOCCOLILLO drilled a game-winning home run with two outs in the 12th inning to lead the Indians to a 3-2 triumph over the Richmond Braves. Zoccolillo, who singled and scored in the fourth, hit his third homer in the last four days and sixth of the season after Richmond rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to force extra frames. Helena LHP Carlos Ramirez is the Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week Talk about your no-brainers, congratulations Carlos, courtesy of the Helena site: PL PITCHER OF WEEK BLANKS PADRESThe Helena Brewers recorded their first shutout of the season, riding the right arm of Carlos Ramirez to an 8-0 whitewash of the Idaho Falls Padres Sunday afternoon at Kindrick Legion Field. Helena climbed back into a tie for first place in the North Division with the Great Falls White Sox at 9-3, while the Padres dropped to a league-worst 3-10. Helena broke through early against Idaho Falls starter William Ponce, as Guilder Rodriguez led off the first with a single to left and scored three batters later on a sacrifice fly by Robby Deevers to make it 1-0. The Brewers added three more in the second, highlighted by an RBI single by Andri Gomez and a second successful double steal in as many nights, this one turned in by Rodriguez who went to second and Gomez who knocked over catcher Luis Lopez to score. Ramirez improved to 3-0 with a 0.50 ERA this year, striking out a season-high seven batters. He has allowed two hits over his last two starts (12 innings) and has a 14.1 inning scoreless streak. Ponce took the loss for Idaho Falls and dropped to 1-2, allowing four runs (one earned) and seven hits in five innings of work. It was just announced that Ramirez has been voted "Pioneer League Pitcher of the Week" for June 23-29. The Brewers will enjoy an off day Monday, then begin a week-long road trip to Casper for three games and Idaho Falls for four. Helena's next home game is Wednesday, July 9th against the Great Falls White Sox. riding the right arm of Carlos Ramirez http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Hee-hee, imagine if he had pitched with his better arm -- Ramirez is a lefty, although coincidentally, he was listed as a RHP in the 2002 Brewer media guide -- listed as a LHP in the 2003 guide and everywhere else.
  20. Monday's Daily Menu : Three audio choices for you Monday evening as the Brewers are off, with Ben Hendrickson's second start since his return from the DL the main course... All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... INDIANAPOLIS: RHP David Manning vs. Richmond (Braves) at home, 7:00 PM Audio link: www.newstalk1430.com/ HUNTSVILE: RHP Ben Hendrickson at home vs. Birmingham (White Sox), 7:05 PM Audio link: espn1450.com/ HIGH DESERT: Idle BELOIT: Due to last Wednesday's rainout and subsequent Thursday doubleheader, RHP Jason Baker gets to make his third start of the season (10th appearance), at home vs. Battle Creek (Yankees), 7:00 PM Audio link (opponent's): www.battlecreekyankees.co...n_road.asp HELENA: Idle ARIZONA: RHP Tim Dillard gets his first pro start (second appearance), as the Brewers host "Royals-1", one of two Kansas City clubs in the league, this morning in Maryvale. This will be game seven for Arizona (current record 1-5), and this will be their seventh different starting pitcher. Dillard will be at least the fifth pitcher to have one start and at least one relief appearance after today. And why not? Keep all the very young arms happy -- no need for defining roles so early, as I can't imagine any Arizona pitcher is allowed to throw more than 60 pitches in a game, anyway.
  21. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: HIT PARADEBefore Thursday's rainout in Chattanooga, pitching coach Stan Kyles was watching Luis Martinez, the scheduled starter, warm up before the game in awe....... He had never seen Luis look so good before and even Luis remarked how good his arm felt and all his pitches moved....... "Absolutely amazing. The best stuff I'd ever seen. He had it all," exclaimed Kyles..... We'll never know how good Looie's stuff really was. The game lasted three whole batters and part of a fourth, but whatever Luis had last Thursday, he didn't seem to have it tonight........ He used up 90 pitches, 55 for strikes in five innings of work, constantly working from behind the count and getting out of jam after jam. This game could easily have wound up a laugher, as the Barons outhit the Stars by a ridiculous margin of 18-9........ The Barons' hit parade was led by newcomer Jeremy Reed, who joined the Barons after Ryan Hankins was promoted to Charlotte. Reed's five hits figured in two key rallies...... The Sox are very high on this left-handed hitter. With Class A - Kannapolis (SAL) last year, his average was almost 30 points higher than his nearest teammate. He left the Winston-Salem Warthogs with a .333 batting average, currently 2nd best in the Carolina League....... After Sunday's performance, he's hitting .463. The Barons left five of eight runners on base in scoring position in the first five innings........ The Barons, in the 1st inning, left Reed on third after he singled and stole his way around the diamond....... Reed, like Ryan Knox, doesn't have blazing speed, but he is very aggressive around the diamond........ In the 2nd inning, a force play left another runner on third....... In the 3rd, Reed, Gabe Alvarez, and Darron Ingram each reached base consecutively, but a pickoff erased Reed from the bases and Alvarez was forced out...... In the 4th, Jonathan Acevas took advantage of a one-out walk, and circuited around the bases, eventually scoring on a two-out single by Danny Sandoval........ Chad Durham doubled down the left field line putting runners in scoring position, but Looie got the strikeout when he needed it to end the inning......... In the 5th, Martinez had runners on the corners with one out, but struck out All-Star catcher Carlos Maldonado swinging on a 1-and-2 slider and Jon Acevas the same on a 1-and-2 fastball........ Four of Looie's six strikeouts in the game were in crucial situations to end the inning, as he left the lead to Ken Ray, who was holding the league to a .191 batting average, but numbers can mean very little in a game....... Guillermo Reyes led off with a single to right-center. Danny Sandoval dropped a beautiful drag bunt down the first base line. Brandon Gemoll fed the ball to Kenny on what looked to be a bang-bang play, but he dropped the feed for an error........ After Chad Durham bunted a third strike foul in back of the plate for the first out, Juan Piniella singled sharply to left to load the bases. That set up the big hit for the Barons, a single by Reed to score Reyes and Sandoval for a 4-3 lead. Gabe Alvarez followed with some insurance, hitting a double into the left field alley to score Piniella. Although the Stars had a three-run inning in the 4th to put them ahead, 3-2, thanks to a 2-run HR to left by Noochie Varner and an RBI double by Knox, they squandered a number of chances that would have offset the 18-hit barrage the Barons unleashed tonight......... With one out In the 1st, Dave Krynzel walked on four pitches and stole his 29th base of the season (his 42nd as a Huntsville Star -- good now for 14th place on the club's all-time list). J.J. Hardy then singled to right, but took 2nd when Jeremy Reed overthrew the cut-off man, but no further damage resulted........ The Stars left D.J. Clark on 2nd and Kade Johnson on first in the 2nd inning when Knox hit a high foul to the third base side........ The Stars had a runner on first with one out in the 6th when Pacheco was taken out........ For some reason, Neal Cotts does not show up in the official box score, but Wally Backman called on the southpaw, just off the DL because of a shoulder problem, to get lefty hitter Clark...... Clark went 2-and-2 before he singled to right, sending Varner to second, and Backman went to the right-hander Jeff Bajenaru, who cuffed the Stars for 2 2/3 innings, allowing no hits, but three walks. In the 8th inning, Bajenaru issued back-to-back walks to Varner and Clark, before getting Richard Paz, who has the best eye at the plate on the team, on a called third strike. Judging by the look on his face, you knew Paz didn't agree at all with Mike Estabrook's call........ It wasn't the only bad call the Stars saw tonight. Varner was called out on a late tag at third on a double steal attempt in the 6th....... The Stars rallied with one out in the 9th to score their final run. With closer Royce Ring on the mound, Knox singled on two hops to right-center. After Krynzel capped a hitless night by flying out to left, Hardy ripped a double off the Purity sign in right-center to score Knox and raise his average back up to .300....... Representing the tying run, Corey Hart struck out on a 2-2 breaking ball to end the game. This was "Turn Back the Clock" night the stadium, and 2,500+ fans were attracted, not just by the novelty --- there has been almost no change in the Stars logo since 1985, save for cosmetic changes in the colors (the Stars wore red pullover tops tonight) --- but by the auctioning off of the Stars' uniforms. The bids started before the game and concluded in the 7th inning. All bids started at $30...... When it was all over, Dave Krynzel's jersey top went for $250........ Ryan Knox was picked up for an overpriced $225....... I believe J.J. Hardy's uni went for $185. Corey Hart's was won for $250....... The wife of Jimmy Jones --- I'm sorry I can't remember her name --- wound up with hitting coach Sandy Guerrero's #16 for $100. (It was the number Jimmy wore when he was a catcher for the Stars in 1987-88)........ I bid $45 on Kade Johnson's #26 because that's my birthday, which was four days ago, but someone beat me out. C'est la vie........ Anyone who wasn't attracted by the chance to win a bid on a uniform, certainly was there for the dollar hot dogs, Pepsis, programs, and G.A. tickets. Hot dog and soda sales were very brisk tonight. The Barons, Stars, and Diamond Jaxx were all logjammed in a second place tie prior to this game, but now the Barons and Bay Bears are in a first place tie, with the Stars two games back....... In the second game of this three-game series, Ben Hendrickson (2-1, 2.84) will try to reprise his one-hit performance against Carolina and even this series against right-hander Mitch Wylie (1-1, 4.76), Monday night.

  23. From his hometown Indiana paper Sunday: Robbie Wooley, Taylor, co-MVP Wooley reigned as the king of the hill again this season, and finished with an 11-1 record and 0.90 ERA. In 77 2Ú3 innings of work, he racked up 149 strikeouts and allowed just 34 hits and 22 walks. "Every kid on every opposing team wanted to be able to say they hit the ball off Robbie Wooley. That is a lot of pressure, plus he had the pressure of having pro scouts at every one of his games. Every game he pitched, he was under the gun -- but he handled it all beautifully and he performed great," Phares said. Wooley helped the Titans finish with a 22-7-1 record which included MIC and Sheridan Sectional championships. He earned the Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year award, and the Milwaukee Brewers called his name in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball draft. He has not made his choice yet between the Brewers and the University of Cincinnati. Wooley also topped the all-county team as a junior, and he is the first player to make the all-county team all four years of his career. He finished with a bevy of outstanding career statistics including a 41-6 record, 1.21 ERA and 497 strikeouts -- ranking third in state history in wins and eighth in strikeouts. "I imagine it will be a long time before we see someone dominate like Robbie has for four years," Phares said. "He was a coach's dream in that you didn't have to worry about his work ethic or commitment to the game -- he always worked year round which was a big reason he had a fabulous career." What we're likely looking at: A parallel to last year's deadline signing of RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, just before classes begin -- Tom saw his first pro action this year and is doing well. What's so glamorous about the University of Cincinnati? Heck, the Brewers are offering Helena, Montana -- Big Sky country, baby! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. No, not signed, here's the Brewerfan write-up from colbyjack: 23. Jon Mungle - OF - Mississippi St Good pure hitting prospect with a potentially powerful left-handed stroke. Shows a patient eye at the plate. Had somewhat of a tough year this past spring batting .260 in 204 at bats after hitting .341 the year before. Needs to improve his defense, and for now is limited to left field. Has fared well in a tough SEC conference. www.mstateathletics.com/0...89,00.html And the latest from gomemphis.com: A redshirt sophomore, Mungle had indicated to scouts he would likely return to Starkville for at least one more season. "I've got all summer to make my decision," said Mungle, who would be draft-eligible again next season. "More than likely I'll be going back to school." Scouts consider Mungle a potential five-tool player, but he admits he has some room for improvement. "I'm a guy who can hit home runs and steal bases, which is a pretty rare combination," Mungle said. "Athletically, I can still get better. I've got a lot of work to do defensively, and I need to strengthen my arm."
