  1. West Tenn (Cubs) 5, Huntsville 3 Mike Jones only goes five tonight; Stars score early but not late; the first half officially ends... Huntsville Site Game Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=158 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: David in fine form despite the Stars' defeat... THE REAL STORYSunday, I related a tale that happened in Saturday's game, where Noochie Varner was introduced over the P.A. system to the crowd of over 5,000 as "Hoochie Mama". Well, there's more and I've got the definitive story.......... I blamed our own P.A. guy, but it turns out it was Luis Martinez... Luis was charting pitches in the seats behind home when he decided to sneak up to the 3rd floor in the 5th inning to have a little fun. He entered the room next to the Press Box and asked if he could announce a name over the system. Of course, his intentions were premeditated, because to call Martinez simply quite a character is to call Paul Newman just another actor....... It was Martinez, who ran the basepaths Friday night like it was a playground, running halfway from first to third on a fly ball to left, and was looking to have a little fun with the strangest name on the club........ The Lookouts have names like Sardinha, Senjem, and Schramek --- all we have is Noochie Varner, so when you're the only player on the team with a unique handle, you're going to be the target of the one joker on the club....... It surprised and cracked up our radio guy, Robert Portnoy, who was doing his job, paying half attention to the P.A. that night ........ "Did I just hear Noochie Varner introduced down below as Hoochie Mama?"........ It amused everyone but coach Sandy Guerrero, who wanted to strangle our P.A. guy, Todd, not knowing it was Martinez. A kangaroo court was held, and Martinez got a light fine, that I'm sure will go toward the party at the end of the year when the Stars win the Southern League Championship. Fans and players waited out a one hour, 33-minute rain delay Monday, as a strong thunderstorm came through the area shortly after six o'clock. Using some logic, I was sure this game would be called. The Stars have to leave for Greenville, a series that starts Wednesday, and there was nothing left for the Stars to prove and the Diamond Jaxx were anxious for a fresh start. They would need one since Carolina was the next team on their schedule......... But as assistant general manager Cliff Pate stated over the air during the game, "There's always someone in the park who is seeing a game for the first time, and it's our job to see that we don't disappoint them." Saturday, the Stars had visitors from Silver Spring, Maryland, who were on a summer trek to see every major and minor league park in the country. Cliff's point was made right there. These people had traveled a long distance to see a game, and it's just not good policy to arbitrarily postpone or cancel a game just because the weather six hours or an hour before gametime, doesn't look promising....... It was absolutely pouring down rain one hour before gametime, Monday night, yet there was an obligation not to disappoint 1,500 people who were taking part of their time and money to stay and be entertained and watch a game. Oh yes, the game......... Mike Jones tonight looked like the old Jonesy who had walked 17 batters in 25 2/3 innings last April...... He got through the first two innings easily, throwing 24 pitches, but struggled in the third after getting the first two hitters out........ He walked Jon Hamilton and Brendan Harris on 3-and-0 and 3-and-1 counts. John Powers then got the green light on a 3-and-0 pitch and lined it into right-center for a run-scoring single. He threw six pitches to Mike Dzurilla and walked him before getting the dangerous Ray Sadler to go fishing on a high fastball for strike three.......... In all, 31 pitches for Jones in the 3rd inning....... He was done in five, after throwing 92 pitches. By this time, Diamond Jaxx starter John Webb had a huge home run to tie the game, a shot off Jones that left the park over the right side of the big Star that's the club's major advertising vehicle in left field......... Dave Krynzel collided with the right-center field wall in the 6th, chasing Jon Hamilton's triple for the go-ahead run........ Kryznel was all right, but he wasn't the only one who kissed the wall, tonight. Noochie Varner hit the wall rather hard in the 4th inning on a long drive to right, that brought out the trainer, Greg Barajas........ Varner couldn't come up with the ball as former Star, Jackson Melian, led off with a triple, scoring on Josh Arteaga's ground ball. The Stars scored their three runs in the 2nd inning as Webb took 38 pitches to face the entire order......... Ryan Gripp, Richard Paz, and Varner all hit back-to-back singles to load the bases......... Kade Johnson hit a ground ball to Powers, beating out the throw, but forcing the lead runners up a base to make the score, 1-0........ A ground ball hit by Jones went off the glove of shortstop Josh Arteaga, vaulting in the direction of Powers, who, if he had a luckier break, or was a better fielder, could have gotten an out at second, first or both, but he kept the ball in front of him, preventing a run, but loading the bases again.......... Ryan Knox's grounder to short scored Paz, forcing Jones at second. Johnson would score after walks to Krynzel and J.J. Hardy. Everybody gets Tuesday off, including me. The Stars will begin the second half of the season, facing a hot Greenville team that has won 8 of their last 10 ballgames, then returns home to face the Carolina Mudcats for the first time this season, so that's quite a challenging start for the Stars....... Jeff Robinson (0-0, 7.56) will kick it off for the Stars Wednesday. Chris Waters (2-0, 3.25) will go for Greenville........ Pitcher Chuck Smith, (briefly Brewer property in spring training this season before failing a physical - MassBrew), who spent portions of two seasons with the Florida Marlins in 2000-01, was signed by Atlanta as a minor league free agent and will join the G'Braves as their second half begins. The Stars will host the first round of the Western Division playoffs at Joe Davis Stadium on September 3-4........ Ballots for the Southern League All-Star game to be held in Jacksonville are out. The results of the balloting will be announced at the end of June starting with managers and coaches on the 27th, I believe. I'll have to check the facts when I go to work in an hour......... My good buddy at the WHNT sports desk, sports director Tom Perkins, left his ballot empty, so I filled it in last night. He already knows, doesn't care, and doesn't mind. Hope I don't cause a celebrated scandal......... See y'all when the season begins again on Wednesday. Throw to the plate.......... I'M OUT! Huntsville Box Score: Can't complain when Krynzel and Hardy each draw two walks... 2. Syracuse (Blue Jays) 9, Indianapolis 3 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Tony Zuniga led an offensive assault as the Syracuse SkyChiefs looked for revenge by way of a 9-3 victory over the Indians on Monday night. After having swept the SkyChiefs at Syracuse last weekend, the Tribe has now dropped five of the first six games on this eight-game homestand. Joe Roa took the loss for Indianapolis (28-40), making his first start for the Tribe since signing with the team last week. Roa pitched only 3.2 innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, five of which were earned. Syracuse (28-36) scored four runs in the top of the third inning off of Roa to take an early 5-0 lead, as Zuniga picked up the first two of his team-high four RBI. Zuniga picked up two more RBI with a single in the top of the fourth to chase Roa from the ballgame trailing 6-2. Four SkyChiefs batters combined to score all nine of the team's runs, as Kurt Keene scored three while Rich Thompson, Mike Colangelo and Gary Burnham each crossed the plate twice. The Indians scored two runs in the home half of the third inning thanks to a Bill Hall RBI double and an RBI single by Mark Smith. Syracuse starter Vinny Chulk lasted only 2.2 innings for the SkyChiefs, as he was removed with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the third. Scott Cassidy retired Cody McKay to strand all three runners and hold off the Tribe threat. In the fourth, the Indians again loaded the bases with two outs and one run already home, but Cassidy again was able to pitch out of the jam by getting Pete Zoccolillo to ground sharply to first base. Dan Reichert pitched a scoreless two frames of relief for Syracuse to earn the win and improve to 1-1. Hall and Jim Rushford were the only Indians players to have multiple hit games, as both finished with three hits. The two teams will continue the four-game series on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when Ben Ford (0-2, 5.79) pitches for the Tribe against Syracuse's Josh Towers (2-4, 3.65). A--6138Here's the media notes from prior to the game regarding the Tribe's two offensive stars Monday: Bill Hall has tied his season-high with a seven-game hitting streak. He was moved to the lead-off spot in the lineup Saturday and has gone 3-for-8 (.375) with two runs scored, a double, a walk and a stolen base in two games. During his seven-game hitting streak, Hall is 10-for-29 (.345) with six runs, three doubles and four walks. Hall's previous seven-game hitting streak came May 29-June 4 giving him at least one hit in 14 of his last 16 games. In that period, he's batting .292 (19-for-65). Jim Rushford has been on a tear putting back-to-back nine-game hitting streaks together in hitting safely in 21 of his last 25 games. Rushford signed with the Tribe on May 15, and after going hitless in his first four games and 10 at-bats, has broken out in a big way. Over the last 25 games, Rushford is hitting .356 (32-for-90). Rushford was the Tribe's MVP in 2002. No doubt Jim Rushford wears the uniforms within the Brewers' organization well. Wonder what happened with Texas this spring... Will the move to leadoff help jumpstart Bill Hall's career prospects? He's walked 17 times in 228 AB's in 2003.
  3. Two other notations I didn't include in my initial post here: 2003 12th round OF Carlos Corporan was originally ticketed for Helena, but perhaps is still in Maryvale Where is OF Francisco Plasencia, the Venezuelan who turns 19 this week? Toby knows something, as Plasencia said good-bye (for now) to the Power 50 this week. Apparently not quite Pioneer League time yet for Francisco, who has been ranked as high as # 19 on the P50 -- he must have had a tough off-season http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ...
  4. Well, here are some odds and ends from the Helena roster as listed on the Helena site. This one seems to be more updated than the one on the Brewers' own site, and since I imagine the good folks in the Helena front office actually know who's in Montana right now, the Brewerfan Player Index matches the Helena site for the most part. From the Pionner League site: The Pioneer Baseball League is classified Rookie Advanced. This makes us a starting place for players beginning their professional careers. Each team is limited to a roster of 35 active players, with no more than 30 players in uniform for each game. Our Player Eligibility Rule states that no more then 17 of the 35 active players may be 21 and older, provided that no more than two of the 17 are 23 or older. Also, no player on the Active List may have more than three years prior service. There are 32 names on the Helena roster list. We just moved the following players from the Arizona roster to the Helena roster here at Brewerfan: RHP Todd Gelatka, 2000's 28th round pick, hopefuly healthy this year 18 year old Dominican lefty Carlos Ramirez is in Helena; Toby is smiling for his Power 50 favorite RHP Ty Taubenheim, this year's 19th round pick, who was originally slated for Arizona C Jeremy Frost, 2002's 10th rounder; Frost is already 23, this move had to be made C Alberto Segura, a 19-year-old Dominican 2B Guilder Rodriguez is a Venezuelan who will be 20 in July Local Racine, Wisconsin product Vinnie Rottino, who should see time as a super-utility man SS Augustin Septimo, a Dominican product who just turned 19 years old Jeremy Frost and Vinnie Rottino appear to be the two designated 23-year-old eligibles. (LHP Eric Henderson and RHP Judd Richardson are also 23, but are listed on the Helena roster as injury rehabs.) Now here are some players that we've placed on Brewerfan's Arizona roster until we can confirm that they are still with the organization. They had been on the Helena roster earlier: LHP Alex Correa will be 21 in July. He's already spent the past two summers in Arizona Tim Dillard, the 2002 draft-and-follow signee, is not listed on the Helena site. That makes sense if he'll be pitching as rumored, instead of catching. 2003 11th round 3B Adam Heether also is not listed on the Helena site. That should free up playing time for 2002 DFE 3B Justin Barnes. So here are the questions we'll try to answer in coming days: Where are the following players? For now they are still listed on the Helena roster here at Brewerfan... 2002 3rd round RHP Eric M. Thomas - Toby's reported here about potential injury issues for the 6'9" Thomas 2002 2nd round SS Josh Murray - the youngster won't be 19 until August, a summer in Arizona will be fine if he's over earlier injury issues from April in Beloit 2002 20th round RHP Tyler Shepple; the Univ. of Washington product was hit very hard in Ogden last summer; he'll be 23 in August, so to be MIA isn't a good sign right now 2002 28th round RHP Eric A. Thomas; this Thomas will be 24 in August (man, there are a lot of farmhands born in August), so again, to have not made the Beloit cut earlier this season spells trouble So we'll see what shakes out over the next week or so. One of the interesting aspects of this year's Helena club is that their is no very high pitching draft pick to watch. Beyond Dana Eveland (hopefully), it's anybody's guess as to what the starting rotation looks like. Greg Moreira? Are Henderson and Richardson healthy enough to start from the get-go? Manny Ramirez got some of us excited in High Desert last season -- he's listed as an infielder, and not a catcher, on the Helena roster. Perhaps those lax defensive skills have forced a move to first base. The fun begins Tuesday! Hopefully the Helena site and newspaper coverage will keep us well-informed! Here's the Helena site roster: www.helenabrewers.net/htm...rewers.php

  9. Daily Menu for Monday: All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Joe Roa makes his first start for the Tribe at home against Syracuse (Blue Jays), 7:00 PM; remember, AAA dosen't have split-season titles... HUNTSVILLE: RHP Mike Jones at home vs. West Tenn (Cubs) at 7:05 PM as the Stars officially close out the first half HIGH DESERT: It's a brand new season, or half-season, anyway. Interestingly, to kick things off, the Mavericks' starter is TBD for Monday, as the new pitcher will take recently-released LHP Brian Mazone's rotation spot. It might be a "bullpen" game, or it might be more of a long-term assignment for tonight's starter. Possibility is RHP Aaron Dean, but that's just a guess. Anyway, it'll be vs. Lancaster (Diamondbacks) at home, 9:05 PM. BELOIT: Idle for the All-Star break; the All-Star game is Tuesday with plenty of Snapper representation, especially on the mound.
  10. David Weiser's Huntsville Update: 40-40 VISIONWith this first half concluded, the Diamond Jaxx seem to be just going through the motions. Maybe every other team in the Southern League is, too....... Not the Stars....... The will to win is still there. Derek Lee not only won the Stars' 40th game this season, he won his personal 40th as a Huntsville Star, with little expended effort on this hot day, this last day game of the 2003 season........ Despite their 40-27 record, they were only 8-12 in daylight....... Aside from giving up a home run to Ray Sadler in the 2nd inning, Derek allowed only one runner to reach scoring position, before he was lifted after getting Jon Hamilton out on a ground ball to Richard Paz. He threw 73 pitches, 47 for strikes (64.4%). 34 of his first 44 pitches were strikes....... I don't know why manager Frank Kremblas lifted him at such an odd juncture in the game and he certainly had more pitches left in his arm, but it was a hot day (81° at gametime --- and getting warmer). It was Father's Day, so in recognition of this honored day, it was Father-Sons/Daughters Catch Day...... Scores of parents and children came out onto the outfield grass after the game with their gloves, to simply have a game of catch........ This is what baseball is all about, friends. Baseball's future grows out of this tradition --- a simple game of catch. A beautiful gesture on management's part, and I hope an annual tradition....... Corey Hart's father was in attendance today, and he took part in the customary "Swing for the Fences" entertatinment portion of the game. This takes place in the middle of the 6th inning, in which a fan comes out to a position on the outfield grass where he tries to hit a baseball on a tee over the fence. He gets three tries and a prize if successful. Corey looked on as his dad, Johnny, hit the first rather weakly, dropping well short of the fence, but the second one went over. David Krynzel's dad may or may not have been there today, but his brother Danny, wearing a Stars #49 uniform was sitting in the dugout when he watched his brother line a 3-1 pitch just barely over the UAH sign in right field to lead off the game......... Krinkles is 18-for-39 (.462) against Diamond Jaxx pitchers this season. It was his first home run for the Stars since last August 19....... The first of three hit batters started with Paz, the next hitter, who was hit on the number '3' of his "30" uniform number. J.J. Hardy, 12-for-27 (.444), the second leading hitter against the Jaxx, followed with a single through short and into left....... With runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Brandon Gemoll ended an 0-for-11 slump by pulling a single to right, scoring Paz, and the Stars led, 2-0. Brandon extended the Stars lead in the 4th inning by getting things started with a double to right-center. After Noochie Varner hit a 1-1 pitch to center for a single, Daryl Clark walked to load the bases........ Mike Kremblas hit into a double play, Brendan Harris electing to go to second, allowing Gemoll to score. The General and Ryan Miller had scattered five hits through eight innings, and after Hardy's two-run HR under the scoreboard in the 7th inning, it looked like the Stars were going to cruise to another victory. Matt Childers had struck out two hitters in the 8th........ But whatever possessed the Diamond Jaxx in this game, possessed them late...... One out late....... After getting Mike Dzurilla on a ground ball to start the 9th, Childers hit Jason Dubois in the back with a pitch. It almost looked like it got him in the head, but I was sitting pretty high up in the stands today. Dubois had no intent on incrimination. He just flung his bat softly toward the dugout and ran to first. The next hitter, Jon Hamilton, hit a no-doubt home run to right field to make it 5-3......... Ray Sadler then was hit in the bicep with Childers' first pitch and John Powers took a 2-2 pitch all the way to the wall in right-center. Although Sadler has excellent speed, he was held at third. The tying run was now in scoring position......... Just as it had happened with Childers on the mound 10 days ago vs. Chattanooga after giving up two runs and finding himself protecting a one-run lead, Stan Kyles, the Stars' unheralded pitching coach, who doesn't get enough credit for turning around Paul Stewart and Luis Martinez last year, called a big mound conference with Childers....... That June 10, Childers with runners on first and second, needed three outs --- and got it. Whatever Kyles had to say, apparently worked again........ A ground ball by Casey Kopitzke scored Ray Sadler, who would have been tough to catch at home, anyway, but Corey Hart looked the runner on second back, before making a perfect throw to first to get the second out........ Pinch-hitter Jose Velazquez, a decent .259 hitter against Stars pitching, ended the game on a 1-1 pitch with a broken-bat ground ball to Paz, who fielded the ball, while avoiding the major part of Velazquez's bat. Derek Lee is now a league-leading 9-2 on the season, his most successful yet with the Stars, arguably including his 11-3 campaign in 2000......... Only two pitchers in Stars history have won nine games before the end of June, both with the Oakland organization --- Joe Law, who won his 9th on June 14, 1988 and Jeff Bittiger, who rebounded from a 1-5 start to win 9 straight, winning his 9th game on June 25, 1992. Bittiger eventually became the fastest pitcher in Stars history to win 10 games, when he won his 10th on June 30. Three days later, he was promoted to Tacoma........ Joe Law in 1988 had three chances after he won his 9th, but he lost to Orlando, 4-2 in the opener to the 2nd half of the season, took a no-decision on June 25 in a 4-3 loss to Jacksonville, then another no-decision on June 30, vultured for a 5-3 win by Charlie Corbell in his Stars debut...... Law was promoted to Tacoma on July 4, then promoted to Oakland and scheduled to pitch July 6. I forget what goofy set of circumstances sent him on a plane back to Tacoma before he made it to Oakland, but I hope to find out again someday....... With just a half a month to go, Derek has an excellent chance to now become the fastest to win 10 games for the Stars in their history........ Derek's seven strikeouts in this game is the best effort since July 15 of last year, against the Diamond Jaxx...... Against every team in the league since 1999 when he made his debut with the Stars, The General has pitched more innings and struck out more hitters against the Diamond Jaxx than any other team. His 2.61 ERA is also 2nd best. You'll find a complete breakdown of Derek's 40 wins against the league on the STANDINGS link here: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html A scoring change is being submitted to the league for approval that would reduce Dave Krynzel's caught stealing figure. The game in question happened some time during the Chattanooga series on June 8....... As it stands, Krynzel's been caught officially, 18 times, not 19, unless the league disallows the change. Mike Jones (6-2, 2.43), 5th among SL ERA leaders, will get the start in the final game of the 1st half, Monday, against John Webb (2-7, 4.42)....... The Stars have an 8-game lead, their largest at the end of a half-season of play since the second half of 1989, when they beat out Birmingham by 10½ games ........ If the Stars play errorless ball Monday, it will be the first time this season they have played a four-game series without making an error. I thought an error would be given to Richard Paz today on a double play ball from J.J. Hardy in the 5th inning. Paz took the ball to get a force on John Powers, but in making the pivot, he threw the ball over the stretched out glove of Brandon Gemoll. The batter, Casey Kopitzke, was given credit with a fielder's choice instead. (David, the official scorer can never assume a double play will be made. Since the Stars got the force on the play, the only way an error would have been charged is if the errant throw allowed the batter to take second base. -- MassBrew)

  13. Inland Empire (Mariners) 7, High Desert 3 High Desert Site Game Summary: SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The High Desert Mavericks brought the first half of the 2003 season to a close on Sunday night, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 7-3 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. The 66ers got to Mavs starter Dan Hall in the third inning, as former Maverick Cristian Guerrero singled and scored on a sac fly from Luis Oliveros for a 1-0 lead. In the fourth inning, John Castellano's one-hopper appeared to tag Hall in the right leg, and left him a bit shaken as Castellano reached on an infield single. Castellano scored on a triple by Jason Van Meetren off the top of the wall in left-center field. Van Meetren would score on Evel Bastida's two-run bomb to right field off the scoreboard. That would end the day for Hall (5-6), as he threw just 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. The Mavs finally got something going offensively in the fifth as Johnny Raburn singled home Brian Foster and Ozzie Chavez. Raburn would take second on the throw home and move to third on a throwing error. He then scored on a sac fly from Todd West as the Mavs cut the deficit to one at 4-3. High Desert had one hit in each of the next three innings but could not produce anything off Brian Strelitz (4-2), or Justin Blood. Stelitz came on when 66ers starter Ryan Ketchner was chased in the fifth. Strelitz fired 2.2 innings of scoreless relief while Blood collected his second save of the year by tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth. Despite the loss, two positives came from Sunday's game. Sunday marked the return of Mavs slugger Brad Nelson, who has been out of action since April 11th, after having surgery on his right hand. Nelson finished the game 2-4 including a base hit in his first at-bat. Sunday was also the debut for new Mavs hitting coach Andy Tomberlin. Tomberlin was slated to be in Helena this summer with the Pioneer League's Helena Brewers, but reported to High Desert on Sunday. Hopefully his arrival will bring an end to the Mavs recent offensive woes. The Mavs finish the 70-game first half with a record of 25-45, the third worst start in team-history, and the worst record for any half for a Brewers affiliate in the High Desert. They are 15 games behind the first-half champion Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, who wrapped up the South Division on Sunday afternoon with a win in San Jose. The Mavs will return home to officially open the second half of the 2003 regular season on Monday, June 16th against Lancaster. Game time on Monday is 7:05 (9:05 Central) against the JetHawks. High Desert Box Score: Nine Mavs' base hits, all singles; High Desert 1-for-4 on SB attempts; give RHP Justin Backsmeyer his due for a nice long relief outing... 15. David Weiser's Huntsville Update (Saturday's Game): MORE BLANKSAfter June started with jackets, summer finally came to Huntsville today, and not just because it was muggy. It's been muggy for awhile...... The proof was irrefutable. All one had to do was to drive around town today........ You could drive up the bone-dry Parkway heading north, not knowing a minute later you'd find yourself in a nice downpour, and judging by the pavement, one that had lasted a good while........ When I left home for the ballpark, it was dry, as it had been all day........ When I got there, I looked out on the concourse, and saw the rain gently fall on the already wet tarp...... It stopped, started again, came in a torrent and came in a drizzle. It was so schizophrenic, the groundskeepers weren't sure taking off the tarp was the right thing to do. Finally with some assurance, at 6:48, with an amended start time of 7:35, they pulled the tarp off........ It rained again at the top of the 4th. A day after Luis Martinez pitched six scoreless innings against the Diamond Jaxx, it was Pedro Liriano's turn, but Pedro wouldn't get the kind of run support Luis got. That's been more typical of Pedro's losses than of his victories........ In his four previous wins, he's had 25 runs behind him in 22 innings....... In his seven losses, Pedro threw 37 1/3 innings and had only 7 runs of support, a 1.68 Run Support Average........ While both pitchers appeared to be locking horns in the pitching duel of the season, you could rightfully say West Tenn's Angel Guzman actually won the duel, although he lost the war. Liriano, typically going deep in the count a number of times, failed to finish the 6th inning, throwing 92 pitches, while Guzman had thrown 68 at the end of the 6th...... In the 6th, protecting a 1-0 lead with one out, Liriano walked Brendan Harris. Attempting to steal 2nd, Kade Johnson threw him out, which turned out to be the biggest out of the game, for on the next pitch, the next hitter, John Powers doubled to right-center......... Kade has now thrown out 42% of all runners trying to steal against him, after an 0-for-4 start with the Huntsville Stars. That's now 8 of his last 15....... After Powers doubled, manager Frank Kremblas went to the pen and pulled out Ken Ray, who's been very effective in middle relief since he was acquired by the Stars on May 25....... Ray walked the first batter, Jason Dubois, but retired 7 of the next 8 batters........ Mike Adams, who's held the league's hitters to a .213 average, finished the game by striking out Jason Dubois on a 2-2 change, Jose Velasquez on a 2-2 grounder handled by Brandon Gemoll, and a foul pop by Jackson Melian, who ended Friday's game, as well. Other than Kade Johnson's big out in getting Harris thrown out in the 6th, there was only one other close call for the Stars........ In the 3rd inning, Harris clobbered a pitch that landed foul down the left field line, missing a two-out home run by just three feet........ Daryl Clark didn't miss, though....... With two out in the 5th, he tatooed Guzman's first pitch, a hanging breaking ball, driving it over the Holiday Inn sign in right field. All three levels and no more. He cleared it by several feet for his 1st home run as a Huntsville Star....... Kade Johnson, the next hitter, walked but after that, the Stars were held hitless the rest of the game by Guzman and Eric Brown. Our playful P.A. at the ballpark, Todd, had a little fun with Noochie Varner's name in the 5th inning, introducing him to the crowd as "Hoochie Mama"....... Todd's the best P.A. we've ever had. He gets the crowd stirred up between innings when the beach balls are thrown out into the crowd during the brief Old Navy Beach Ball toss and in the 7th inning stretch, he leads them by singing the traditional, "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". He breathes more life into a ballgame than any P.A. we've had. That's bears repeating.

  18. Game Two: High Desert 3, Inland Empire (Mariners) 1 What a night of pitching up and down the organization Saturday... High Desert Site Doubleheader Summary: Skid Ends as Mavs Split PairSAN BERNARDINO, CA - The losing streak hit seven and then was gone quicker than you can say "butterscotch". The High Desert Mavericks split a double header with the Inland Empire 66ers on Saturday afternoon, losing the first game in heart-breaking fashion 1-0, then taking the nightcap by a final of 3-1 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. John Castellano's walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning would be game one's only run. Chris Saenz was amazing, allowing a total of two hits on the day in six innings of work. He didn't allow his first hit until the sixth, when Luis Castillo fisted one down the right field line for a single. Despite the loss, Saenz (5-6) earned the complete game, the first of the season for any Mavs pitcher. Inland Empire starter Troy Cate went six scoreless innings in the no-decision. Reliever Jared Thomas (4-2) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. The loss gave the Mavs a seven-game losing streak and put them at 20 games under .500 for the first time all year, at 24-44. High Desert's game two offense all came in the first frame. Jason Belcher's two-run triple off 66ers starter Enmanual Ulloa (1-1) highlighted the inning, as the Mavs took a 2-0 lead. Belcher would score on Froilan Villanueva's sac fly for a 3-0 advantage. David Nolasco, making his first start of the year, pitched five solid innings of work. He got out of a key jam in the second with runners at first and third with no outs, holding the 66ers off the board. Nolasco allowed the first two men to reach in the sixth before turning it over to Jeff Hundley. Hundley allowed one of the two inherited runners to score, but held the fort and got out of the inning with a 3-1 lead. He would stay in the ballgame and pitch a scoreless seventh for his first save in a Mavs uniform. Nolasco (2-2) got the win, pitching five plus innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while walking just one man. Most importantly, Nolasco and Saenz before him, each gave the Mavs bullpen a chance to catch their breath, as Hundley was the only reliever out of the pen used all day. The Mavs await the return of Brad Nelson, the Brewers # 1 ranked prospect. Nelson has been getting playing time in Arizona and is expected to be in the lineup on Sunday as the Mavs wrap up the first half of the 2003 season at San Bernardino. Nelson played in just eight games this season before having surgery on his right hand that has kept him out of action since. Dan Hall (5-5) goes against All-Star Ryan Ketchner (6-4) on Sunday night at 6:05 (8:05 Central) as the Mavs and 66ers finish the four-game series. The Mavs will return home to officially open the second half of the 2003 regular season on Monday, June 16th against Lancaster. 20. Time for MassBrew to be obsessive again (gee, really?) Since we have such a captive Link Report audience, growing all the time within the Brewer family based on the notes we've received as of late (keep those cards and letters coming! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ), here's a sneak preview FYI. Indianapolis heads to Pawtucket next Friday - Monday, and if rotation form / weather holds, will amazingly miss Paul Stewart for the second consecutive four-game series. That's hard to do. For Indy, that might be a good thing. Stew threw eight innings of one-run ball in getting the win tonight for the Pawsox. He's now 11th in the International League in ERA at 3.35 after his first ever 13 AAA starts, at age 24. In his last three starts, he has an ERA of 0.47 and a WHIP of 0.80. Over at the "Sons of Sam Horn", the premier moderated Red Sox board around, they have somehting called the "Adopt A Prospect" forum. Posters select a favorite prospect, follow and collect information on that player each month, and then file a report at month's end. Maybe we'll look into something similar next year for Brewerfan. Friends of Paul, sprinkled throughout the system at Indy, Huntsville, and High Desert, might want to check out his thread, which provides details on each of his 13 starts thus far game-by-game. It's not as lengthy as you might think, even if some dude named MassBrew is Paul's adopted "Dad". Hey, Happy Father's Day to me! Hey, if squarepusher can have an Alex Sanchex watch, I can bring you up-to-date on Stewie once a month. And believe me, Leskanic and VanderWal would not get you Paul today.... pub208.ezboard.com/fsonso...D=20.topic The linked thread obviously does not include tonight's outing...
