2001 3rd round RHP Jon Steitz out of Yale has been activated from the Beloit disabled list. The 22-year-old Steitz has been a source of frustration in his two pro seasons. His two-year numbers almost defy belief: 2-15 (including 0-11 in Beloit last season) 7.38 ERA, 174 hits allowed in 129.1 IP (41 games, 24 starts) 102 BB, 104 K, 42 wild pitches, 17 HBP, 13 balks in those 129.1 IP A true riddle given his apparent "stuff" out of college, prompting the high pick. Lots of new readers here, so we'll point you to a staff interview of then-Northeast Area Scout Tommy Tanous. At the tail end, he discusses the scouting process on Steitz in particular in detail (but feel free to review the entire piece http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). www.brewerfan.net/fullArt...ticleId=56 To make room for Steitz, the Brewers released LHP Justin Gabriel, the little lefty 2002 30th round pick out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Gabriel's numbers were decent enough, and he had been somewhat of a workhorse in the Beloit bullpen this season thus far. It may be that Gabriel's biggest drawback was his age -- he was already 23 when drafted last year, and turned 24 this past March. Justin Gabriel's Brewerfan Player Profile Page: www.brewerfan.net/ViewPla...ayerId=339 Gabriel's 2003 numbers, detailed at Baseball America: www.baseballamerica.com/c...riel%2C+ju Striking out a batter an inning, and being left-handed, Gabriel has to feel a bit like he was hit by a bus today. He was a college senior pick, so you wonder how his modest 30th round bonus was structured -- perhaps some money promised to pursue advanced degree work. Regardless, another example that these kids are in a tough business....

David Weiser's Huntsville Update: Even on the road games, David goes far beyond just a rehash of the game summary -- thanks as always, David! ?That was an unbelievable exhibition of fundamentals. An incredible display.? Those were the glowing words of Stars batting coach, Sandy Guerrero, describing what happened in the 5th inning of the 2nd game of this nearly 5½ -hour double header......... Jason Fitzgerald had tied the game at 3-3 in the 4th inning with a home run....... In the following inning with one out, Ryan Langerhans singled. then broke for second on a 3-2 pitch to Bill McCarthy. McCarthy slammed a double down the left field line off the wall, but Daryl Clark fed the cut-off man J.J. Hardy, whose throw cut down Langerhans at the plate. Meanwhile, McCarthy had rounded second....... A little too far around second........ Mike Kremblas noticed, and tried to throw behind McCarthy, but the throw sailed into centerfield, so McCarthy kept going and Greenville manager Brian Snitker waved him on around third...... Dave Krynzel, who took the errant throw from Kremblas, on the fly threw on target to Kremblas, who put the tag on McCarthy, and the Stars ended the inning with two outs on the same play at home plate........ After the last game of the 1st half of the season, Stars manager Frank Kremblas was angry at the lack of killer instinct displayed by the Stars because they had failed to nail that fourth game after taking the first three of the series for the 4th time this season......... I find it hard to make such an accusation stick, but the Stars have another chance on Saturday to get that elusive fourth game in the win column. If they do, perhaps Derek Lee, in the process, will get his league-leading 10th victory, making him the fastest pitcher in Stars history to win 10 games. The Stars, not resting on their defensive laurels, cut down another Greenville runner at home plate in the 6th inning.......... Jason Fitzgerald singled to start the frame. With one out, Kelly Johnson hit a line drive into the right field corner. Fitzgerald, with great speed, turned on the burners and headed for home as Noochie Varner hit the cutoff man, Hardy. J.J. threw to the plate and with plenty of time, nailed Fitzgerald at the plate --- just an unbelievable defensive effort by the Stars over the span of two innings to preserve a tie ballgame........ This is how it was for Greenville --- just a major case of frustration all night! They outhit the Stars, 12-6 in the second game, had in all, 18 hits and 8 walks to work with in the double-header, and wound up stranding 17 runners........ In the 8th inning of the second game, they had runners on the corners, but Mike Adams struck out Richard Lewis to end the inning. The combination of Matt Belisle and Ray Aguilar was frustrating the Stars at every corner until the 9th. Richard Paz drew a leadoff walk. What a surprise --- on a full count pitch from Billy Sylvester, then Mike Kremblas pushed a bunt between first base and the mound that dribbled onto the outfield grass........ 2nd baseman Pete Orr could not cut it off and Paz went all the way to third......... With one out, Krynzel hit a fly ball to shallow center, not enough to score Paz, but Kremblas scrambled to second, just another case of the Stars' season-long aggressiveness on the bases......... Chris Barnwell then went 3-and-2 and drew a walk to load the bases........ That brought up Hardy and another frustrating moment for the G'Braves. Hardy worked the count to 3-and-1 and it appeared that he had drawn a walk on Sylvester's next pitch, but a little boy down the left field line had thrown a ball out on the field before his pitch. One of the umps called time, and Sylvester had another chance to get a strike over........ Sylvester's pitch, instead, was high and tight and it forced in Paz to break the 3-3 tie......... That brought Corey Hart with the bases still full. He ripped a ball down the left field line, scoring Kremblas and Barnwell, and that proved to be the death knell for Greenville........ Brian Adams, just an hour and 45 minutes from his home in Bishopville, South Carolina, had some of his family in attendance, as he recorded his first save for the Stars. Brian, who had an 8.71 ERA in May, has a 2.25 ERA in June, but his K-BB ratio is still a bad dream --- 5 strikeouts and 13 walks in 18 1/3 innings........ Matt Belisle had given up only two home runs all season, until he gave up back-to-back HRs to Clark and Kremblas in the 3rd inning........ Hart broke out of a 3-for-19 slump to hit a long drive out of Greenville Muni and drive in three runs to lead the Stars to a 6-2 victory. Corey is now 12-for-25 (.480) vs. Greenville with three doubles, 2 HRs, and 6 RBIs this season....... Luis Martinez struggled with his fastball early in the game, and in fact, gave up a leadoff home run to Richard Lewis. It looked like he would be overmatched by Adam Wainwright in the early going, but the Stars used seven singles in the 3rd to score five runs and take a 5-1 lead. In that inning, Martinez hit a pitch that took a freakish high hop off the plate and fell in fair territory. In the infield scramble between three players to get the handle on the ball, Luis reached first base with his first single as a Huntsville Star. In 2001, he was 0-for-1. In 2002, Luis was 0-for-22 with 14 strikeouts. The Stars are now 3-0 in double-headers this season........ They have won 7 of their last 8 and 11 of their last 15 games. Mobile beat Chattanooga, 4-3, so both the Stars and Mobile are on top of the Western Division with 3-0 starts......... After a 5.65 ERA in May with 17 strikeouts and 10 walks, Mike Adams has a 1.80 ERA this month with 15 Ks and 3 BBs...... After an 0-for-18 start to his career in the Southern League, Noochie Varner is 21-for-47 (.447) and 21-for-48 (.438) in his last 14 games. To think it all started with a cheap infield hit....... Dave Krynzel has walked eight times in his last four games while striking out only twice. Last year in 31 games with the Stars, he walked only four times........ Corey Hart's error in the 2nd game of this twin bill ended an errorless streak of 14 games, his longest of the season......... J.J. Hardy is in a 1-for-15 slide in his last four games. His average, at .301, is in danger of falling below .300 for the first time this season, disregarding opening day........ There's a chance Ben Hendrickson may rejoin the Stars during their homestand against Carolina, which begins Sunday, which will be the first evening start on that day for the Stars....... Ben Diggins is still rehabbing in Arizona and there's a possibility he could return in time for the playoffs. The Chattanooga Lookouts handed Creighton Gubanich his release. Goobie hit .244 with 22 HRs for the Stars in 156 games in 1995 and 1996. He was signed by the Reds last November 18 and was hitting .226 at the time of his release........ I was looking forward to seeing 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera, Sunday at the Joe, when the Carolina Mudcats come in, but he was promoted on Thursday. Cabrera had been the batting leader in the Southern League for most of the season until Orlando's Matt Diaz caught up to him, and left with a .365 average...... Friday, Cabrera in his major league debut, hit a 2-run home run in the 11th inning to give the Marlins a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays......... The Chicago Cubs traded former Huntsville Stars infielder Mark Bellhorn (Stars '96) and Diamond Jaxx pitcher Travis Anderson to the Colorado Rockies for shortstop Jose Hernandez, who once played for the Orlando Sun Rays back in 1992. The Stars will host the first round of the Western Division playoffs at Joe Davis Stadium on September 3-4........ Ballots for the Southern League All-Star game to be held in Jacksonville are out. The results of the balloting will be announced at the end of June starting with managers and coaches on the 27th. -

High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The Inland Empire 66ers crushed the High Desert Mavericks on Friday night, winning the first game of a three-game set by a final score of 17-2 at Mavericks Stadium. The 66ers hit a season-high seven home runs, coming within one of the Cal League record. Greg Jacobs and Hunter Brown each had two homers to lead a 17 run, 16-hit attack. Former Mav Cristian Guerrero, Dustin DeLucchi, Shin-Soo Choo also homered for the 66ers. Offensively, it?s the 66ers' highest run total since they scored 19 in a game at Mavericks Stadium in April of 2001. The Mavs actually had the lead at 1-0 in the second inning. Scott Candelaria walked and later scored on a groundball by Ozzie Chavez. The 66ers tied it in the third with an unearned run against Mavs starter Chris Saenz (5-7), who lost his second straight decision to Inland Empire. Evel Bastida doubled to lead off the frame, advanced to third on an error and scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1. The sixers began their offensive onslaught with back-to-back homers in the fourth by Greg Jacobs and Guerrero for a 3-1 lead. After the Mavs got a run in the fourth to make it 3-2, the 66ers poured it on. They scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the sixth, two in the seventh, four in the eighth and three more in the ninth. Inland Empire starter Troy Cate (3-7) was overshadowed by the offense, but pitched a solid game. He allowed just one earned run in eight innings to get the victory and snap a personal five-game losing streak. The Mavs have now lost three straight in the second half and are just 1-3. They have been outscored 34-7 in their last two games alone. The Mavs send David Nolasco (2-2) to the hill on Saturday night against Cha Seung Baek (3-1) at 7:05 (9:05 Central). -

Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 17, High Desert 2 That's 34 runs allowed in the last two games, outscored 34-7. The boys are putting on quite a show for visiting Farm Director Reid Nichols this week, aren't they? Quite a bit of brutal outfield play tonight. Your OF was Brian Foster (1st game in the OF this season), Ralph Santana (6th OF appearance), and Scott Candelaria (his 3rd). Here's a thought: go find the next Jim Rushford beating around independent ball. We won't talk about the success rate (or obvious lack there-of) with the free agent pitchers brought in this season. Apparently, the biggest crowd of the season was none too pleased, and who can blame them? Sounded like things got pretty ugly among the faithful. Indianapolis fans have nothing to complain about -- just ask the good folks in the desert... Indianapolis Star Game Story: Cooper speaks bluntly with the press -- again... www.indystar.com/print/ar...5-036.html -
Considering the struggles of the High Desert pitching staff this year, and the fact that much was made of Mike Jones bypassing Adelanto this year on his way to Huntsville, I thought a little analysis might be worthwhile. Who survives High Desert and why? Here are some facts: The Brewers are in their third year of the High Desert affiliation, with at least one more to go (so 2001-2003 thus far). There are currently eight pitchers (a small number) who were Brewer farmhands that had significant innings at High Desert and have since moved on to AA / AAA. Each of these eight pitchers have to be currently considered "successful" in their current AA / AAA roles, to varying degrees. But none have flamed out at AA or higher, so graduating from the "Desert" does say something about the accomplishment. Once a Brewer pitcher has a season (or less) of success at High Desert, the Brewers waste no time in bumping them up. Only one has been asked to "repeat" -- we'll get to him in a bit... Here's your list of successful Maverick graduates: RHP Ben Hendrickson, 2002, 2.55 ERA, 14 games (all starts), 63.1 IP, 64 H, 20 BB, 86 K, 4 HR RHP Paul Stewart, 2001, 5.16 ERA, 28 games (27 starts), 151.2 IP, 169 H, 64 BB, 127 K, 23 HR RHP David Pember, 2001, 4.82 ERA, 20 games (all starts), 121.1 IP, 135 H, 35 BB, 96 K, 12 HR LHP Luis Martinez, 2001, 5.19 ERA, 22 games (all starts), 112.1 IP, 112 H, 64 BB, 121 K, 9 HR RHP Matt Parker, 2001, 4.30 ERA, 28 games (all starts), 161.0 IP, 167 H, 67 BB, 134 K, 17 HR RHP Matt Childers, 2001, 6.44 ERA, 20 games (all starts), 117.1 IP, 155 H, 29 BB, 76 K, 19 HR RHP Roberto Giron, 2001, 3.27 ERA, 45 games (all in relief), 63.1 IP, 64 H, 20 BB, 86 K, 4 HR RHP Ryan Miller, 2002, 5.11 ERA, 36 games (nine starts), 107.1 IP, 106 H, 57 BB, 100 K, 12 HR LHP *Pete Smart, 2002, 5.10 ERA, 29 games (all starts), 180 IP, 212 H, 59 BB, 116 K Observations: Ben Hendrickson's half-season really stands out in retrospect. Even better than perhaps the Mavericks' finest pitching graduate all-time, the Marlins' Brad Penny. Matt Parker's 2001 season kicked butt, too, and it's still a shame he's been relegated to swing man duty ever since. Pete Smart, now injured, was pretty much screwed over when asked to repeat at high-A, at age 25, this spring. The folks in Adelanto are probably looking back on that first-year Brewer 2001 staff as gosh darn solid right about now. You had some horses on that team, dealing with the elements pretty well. Matt Childers' move to late relief has earned him quite a bit of 40-man roster time now. Prior to that, K/IP and H/IP ratios were scary ugly, though. Let's look at the four main guys promoted from Beloit for 2003 we highlighted in our minor league preview, and see how they're dealing with High Desert at the midway point... RHP Dan Hall, 6.50 ERA, 14 games (all starts), 70.2 IP, 89 H, 26 BB, 51 K, 12 HR RHP Dan Kolb, 5.65 ERA, 14 games (all starts), 78 IP, 90 H, 29 BB, 58 K, 13 HR RHP Chris Saenz, 7.11 ERA, 14 games (all starts), 63.1 IP, 71 H, 29 BB, 73 K, 13 HR RHP Tony Stavros, 5.52 ERA, 23 games (one start), 45.2 IP, 58 H, 22 BB, 52 K, 6 HR Observations: Well, let's see. Despite the highest ERA, Saenz has by far the best K/IP ratio, and has a slightly better H/IP ratio. But it's also time for these guys to step up their games, as none is approaching the "tough-it-out" numbers attained by Pember, Parker, Stewart, Martinez, and Miller during their tenures. Regardless, two, three, maybe all four of the above mentioned will probably see Huntsville some time in 2004, but it might be almost by default. I think it's important to mention that the four pitchers above, who were to be counted on so highly this year, were 15th, 24th, 28th, and undrafted round players, respectively. They're getting their chances because top-ten round picks like J.M. Gold, Jon Steitz, Dane Artman, Eric Henderson, Judd Richardson, Dustin Lansford, Gerry Oakes, Brian Nielsen, have all flamed out or can't stay healthy or both. Final note: All said and done, not sure what I accomplished except to say that let's get Hendrickson healthy and that the 2001 Maverick staff deserves more credit than what we give it. I also think that this thread will serve us eventually down the road, when names like Parra, Wilhelmsen, Sarfate, and Housman hit California. As I've mentioned before, they can't possibly jump all those guys, can they? Anyway, thanks for playing along... -- Jim

Final: Syracuse (Blue Jays) 13, Indianapolis 4 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Syracuse SkyChiefs (29-38) scored eight runs in the third inning Thursday night as they coasted to a 13-4 win over the Indianapolis Indians (30-41) at Victory Field. The win earned Syracuse a split of the four-game series. Syracuse sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the third inning, pounding out seven hits against Tribe starter Dave Burba (5-7) who allowed eight runs in the inning, only three of which were earned. Jorge Sequea doubled in the first two runs and scored the third before two Tribe errors led to five unearned runs crossing the plate. Jason Arnold pitched seven solid innings and held the Indians to only two hits as he improved his record to 2-3 on the season. Arnold did not allow a hit until there were two outs in the fourth inning and faced only 18 batters through the first five innings. The Indians scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bill Hall led off the inning with a double and later scored on a Keith Luuloa sacrifice fly. The Tribe's final three runs came in the bottom of the ninth off of Syracuse reliever Doug Linton when Jason Conti lined a single with the bases loaded into right field that was misplayed by right fielder Dewayne Wise. Despite the loss on Thursday night, the Tribe will look to continue a seven-game road winning streak when the team begins an eight-game trip by traveling to Pawtucket on Friday evening for the first of a four-game set with the PawSox. Lefthander Travis Miller (4-2, 3.47) will make the start for Indianapolis, facing Eric Glaser (2-0, 1.80) and the Pawtucket Red Sox. The Indians will return home to Victory Field on Saturday June 28 to face the Richmond Braves at 7 p.m. Indianapolis Box Score: Zocco's back in the lineup and on base three times -- nice... well peoria chiefs are broadcasting Thanks, dman! The source I had listing which Midwest League teams had internet broadcasts was apparently outdated, as it didn't list Peoria. They use SportsJuice, which High Desert used last year. Nice platform for webcasting... But Carter, last year's 4th round pick out of Campbell University, a pick that was universally questioned here the moment it was made, is really testing our patience with that ground rule... On to the bottom of the 11th, Josh Alliston with a scoreless inning for the Snappers -- Kennard Bibbs with a spectacular catch to help Alliston out... -
