  1. One thing I found interesting was Daron Sutton's reminder of the pending handout of a "Brewers bobblehead" and that "if you know which player I'm talking about, it's still going to be handed out." Haven't you heard? There's a new # 41 in town, and he's hitting 97-98 MPH on the gun. It's Dan Kolb Bobblehead Doll Day! Dan tans really well in the July sun http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif http://www.brewerfan.net/images/playerpix/danny_kolb.jpg

  4. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Update: E-MGR.Someone owes Daryl Clark a dinner. Before he ever went to the plate, he was 0-for-1, but we'll get to that in a moment. It was a beautiful 83° night. Not a cloud in the sky. The flag in left field --- motionless. A northern jet stream had brought the humidity down to less than 40%. It was one comfortable night to sit in the stands and watch the zany antics of Birdzerk, Zerk Jr., and Ballzerk with your Pepsi, Bud Lite, hot dog, or whatever........ It was a good thing, too. It was the longest game of the season, ending at just over four hours. It was one of the most bizarre games of the year, too, as the Stars squandered a scoring chance in a most unusual way...... Corey Hart was on first base after a leadoff single to left and one out in the second inning. Up stepped Kade Johnson, and this is where it got interesting....... Kade took a 2-2 pitch off either his foot or his shin, but in any case, he was in pain. Time was called, while he walked it off for nearly two minutes, with the trainer and manager Frank Kremblas watching with concern. Johnson got back in the box and hit Ryan Snare's next pitch hard to left field for a double that took Billy Hall to the track. Johnson pulled up at second, limping as he held up....... As Clark came to the plate, time was called by Mudcat manager Tracy Woodson, who brought his lineup card with him. Eventually, Carolina's infield converged as a group to the infield grass near home plate, and soon you had a lot of puzzled fans and play-by-play man Robert Portnoy, wondering why the action was stopped....... Out of the dugout came Frank Kremblas, not in anger, but in the same kind of bewilderment. To add to the confusion of the 2,500+ fans at the park, Hart was sent back to first and Johnson, in enough pain already, was called back to home plate........ Kade would get another at-bat....... As it turned out, the lineup that had been announced before the game did not match the lineup card that Woodson held, or the card that was presented by Frank Kremblas to home plate ump Tyler Bolick....... Clark was in the #6 position on that card, not Johnson, who batted out of turn. Daryl was out by the rulebook (a two-unassisted for scorebook junkies like me)....... Johnson, still limping, had to bat again with Hart on first and two out because of the appeal. Johnson swung at the first pitch and hit into a force play, going from 3rd baseman Drew Niles to 2nd baseman Jesus Medrano....... For the rest of the game, Clark hit in the #6 spot and Mike Kremblas played the rest of the ballgame......... I don't know the condition of Johnson, but there were rumors emanating from the home dugout side of the lower seats that Kade had broken a bone in his foot........ If Kade goes on the DL, I know a catcher playing at Fort Worth in the independent Central League who's hitting .301 right now. I think most of you know who I mean. Both starters were outstanding, and had nearly identical pitching lines....... Ryan Snare, the former Chattanooga Lookout struck out more hitters, but each starter threw the same number of strikeouts........ Mike Jones threw 95 pitches, 61 for strikes (64.2%), but of the 27 batters he faced, he threw first strikes to only 13 of them. Back-to-back doubles by Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Wilson in the 4th inning netted the Mudcats their first two runs. The latter scored after stealing third on a 1-0 pitch to Jesus Medrano, then a 1-1 ground ball to Chris Barnwell........ After Wilson's double, Jonesy retired the next 10 Mudcats to come to the plate. Then in the 7th, he hit Medrano in the back with a 1-1 pitch and walked catcher Brandon Harper, but got out of the inning unscathed, leaving Ken Ray to pitch a masterful two innings, enabling the Stars to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. Brandon Gemoll got the 9th started with a single to right-center off reliever Mike Flannery, who leads the Mudcats with 10 saves....... Daryl Clark moved him to second on a ball that took a high hop on shortstop Josh Wilson. After Mike Kremblas struck out on three pitches, Chris Barnwell came up with a lot of room in right-center field......... With Carolina one out away from victory, Barney socked a 3-and-1 pitch up the middle for a hit, sending Gemoll racing for the plate. Center fielder Chip Ambres, in a rush to make the throw to the plate, bobbled the ball, allowing Gemoll to tie the game without a throw. As the game entered extra innings, both teams found themselves with empty benches....... The Stars emptied theirs after Dave Krynzel was tossed from the game to end the 10th by Tyler Bolick for arguing a third strike that had come in too close. Dave stood there and argued, and I suppose when he drew that line in the sand to illustrate the path of the pitch, it inspired Bolick to throw up the thumb....... Frank Kremblas came out to have a few words and after a short while, the only way he would come back into this game would be in Birdzerk's uniform. He was thumbed out for the first time this season........ With Krinkles out of the game, Richard Paz entered the game. At first, he took over left field, with Ryan Knox moving to center and Daryl Clark going from left to right, but someone in the dugout had a better idea........ Chris Barnwell was moved from second to third so Paz could play his regular position, Corey Hart was moved to left field, a move that would play a role in the outcome of this game, while Knox and Clark remained at center and right, respectively........ The idea of trying out Corey in left had been bandied about for weeks, but never implemented. Now the moment of truth would come. Excellent pitching continued for the Stars for the next three innings....... Ryan Miller gave up a two-out single to Drew Niles in the 10th, but was saved by Hart's leaping catch of a liner off the bat of Tom Bost to end the inning....... It's good to have a 6'7" guy in the right place at the right time........ The Mudcats were retired in order in the 11th and 12th without getting a ball out of the infield, but in the 13th, the Mudcats, who came in hitting .228 on this road trip, wore Miller down....... After Carolina's Billy Hall grounded out, Miller went full on the next two hitters, walking them both........ Matt Childers, who had pitched the night before in Greenville, arriving in bed at 5 am, went full on Adrian Gonzalez, before he pounded a double that took Hart back to the track. Unfamiliar with the territory, he got turned around and the ball hit off the left field wall, scoring Niles with the lead run, and sending Bost to third........ In all fairness, it would have been a tough play even for Knox or Clark to make. The game that started with a bizarre moment, ended with one........ Josh Wilson hit a 1-2 pitch on the ground through the left side to center field, scoring Bost........ Knox's throw was off-line to Mike Kremblas and skipped to the screen, allowing Gonzalez, who had backtracked to third, to reverse course and score....... Knox was charged with an error........Childers, backing up the play, did one of these hurried submarine flips to Kremblas in an attempt to keep Wilson from advancing, as well, but Chilly's throw sailed up the rightfield line, and Wilson scored on his own single to give the Mudcats a 6-2 lead, and that was that........ Former Greenville Brave Ryan Baker struck out Hart and Gemoll in the 13th to end this wacky game at half-past ten. Monday, Matt Parker (5-2, 2.10) will get the start for Huntsville. Jeff Robinson may wind up on the DL with that stiff shoulder...... Then Ben Hendrickson will make his first start since May 16. That word I got personally from Ben, himself, who was at the ballpark in jeans........ He told me he felt fine, and the lingering forearm tightness was no longer presented enough of a problem for him........ Other news from Ben: J.M. Gold is two weeks from rejoining the High Desert Mavericks, who are desperate for anyone lately, and Ben Diggins has set an August 1 target date to be ready to get back to the league. He's recovering from a slight tear, which Hendrickson says isn't severe enough to require surgery. Right now, he's just started throwing from a flat mound...... Former Star Dave Pember is getting ready for next season, but his rehab is going nicely there, as well. J.J. Hardy snapped an 0-for-16 slump with a meaningless single in the 13th inning...... He came up in the 3rd inning with runners on 2nd and 3rd after a double steal by Knox and Krynzel, and bounced out to the right side. In the 5th, Krynzel was on second once again via a stolen base, but J.J. struck out........ Krynzel now has a league-leading 28 stolen bases, giving him 41 for his career with Huntsville, tying him with Kevin Dattola for 14th place among the Stars' all-time stolen base leaders...... Ryan Knox stole his 24th, giving him 49 total with the Stars, putting him all alone in 10th........ The Tennessee Smokies recently released former Stars outfielder Scott Krause.

  12. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Kade gets robbed; Huntsville, stop making us try to figure out who the player is in your game summary head shot -- caption, anyone? www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=165 Huntsville Times Weekly Notes Column: Written prior to Saturday's loss, don't count win # 10 for Derek Lee before it's hatched, guys... www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...220310.xml David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Update: UNLUCKY NUMBER?What is it with the Stars and number four? Are they turning Japanese? It was considered to be a lucky number by the Babylonians ......... In this country, it's a harmonious number. Everything is set for either two or four, and of course, you have luck if you pick up a four-leaf clover, right?....... But in China and Japan, the number four is very unlucky. It's a symbol of death because the word for both is similar. You'll find no fourth floors or buildings numbered four in either country. Maybe it's unlucky for the Stars, too..........For the sixth time this season, (correcting an error from last night) the Stars were looking at a four-game sweep, only to fail in the final game......... I'm sure manager Frank Kremblas would tear his hair out to know the Stars are 5-11 in game four of every four-game series this season........ By the way, did you notice winning pitcher Bubba Nelson allowed only four hits and losing pitcher Derek Lee gave up four earned runs?........ OK, enough. It's rare Derek has a bad start like this. He never had command of his pitches. He walked six batters, which is a new personal high since his years with the Stars........ He walked a tightrope in nearly every inning, stranding six runners in the first three innings........ In the 1st, he went 3-and-0 on two straight hitters, walking them both, but got out of that jam........ Lee got out of another in the 2nd inning. With one out and a pair of runners on base, Bubba Nelson bunted into a rare 1-5-4 double play....... In the 3rd, after allowing an infield hit, two outs later walked consecutive batters on eight pitches in a row........ He fell behind on Ramon Castro, 2-and-0, then struck him out........ In the fourth inning, (funny how that number crops up again), the General ran out of luck, as all the wildness and inconsistency came back to haunt him. Catcher Jean Boscan led off with a walk. Bubba Nelson then laid down a sacrifice bunt. Lee came off the mound, took a look to see if he had a chance to get the lead runner, but he forgot to keep his eye on the ball. He kicked the ball away off to the third base side of the mound and Boscan and Nelson were both safe........ Richard Lewis on a 2-2 pitch, then singled off the handle to shallow right-center field, scoring Boscan for a 1-0 Greenville lead........ They were far from done. James Jurries walked to load the bases. Ryan Langerhans, on a 1-1 pitch, singled to right, but three runs scored on the play as Noochie Varner's throw to get Langerhans at third sailed high and wild to the screen. The trail runners were already headed for second and third. Lewis made it easy, but Jurries took the risk. He scored on a late throw and Langerhans wound up on third........ Bill McCarthy came up and hit a long drive to right. Varner got himself turned around, went back late on the ball, allowing it to hit the base of the wall. Langerhans, 90 feet away, walked in to make it 5-0, and McCarthy was in with a double........ That was the end of the night for D. Lee........ Brian Adams, a habitually wild lefty, following Derek's unusual control problems, came in from the bullpen after pitching an inning, Friday night, but Brian had himself his best night as a Huntsville Star, not only going for distance, but showing impeccable control.......... He retired consecutive batters to finish the 4th, struck out the side in the 5th, and retired the side in order in the 6th....... After getting one man out in the 7th, Jason Fitzgerald doubled off the top of the wall in right-center. But he finished his evening striking out Ramon Castro, then Kelly Johnson on a 2-2 slider....... The five strikeouts, needless to say, was a season-high for the former Red Sox farmhand. The Stars fall to 2nd place in the West, as Mobile put the broom to Chattanooga, 3-1........ They now face the Eastern Division champs, the Carolina Mudcats for the first time, Sunday night. Ryan Snare (5-2, 3.87) will face Mike Jones (6-2, 2.61)........ Birdzerk will be there for all the kids who aren't dragged off to church by fans of Jesus. J.J. Hardy's batting average slipped below .300 for the first time this season after another hitless day at the plate. J.J., enduring his first slump, is 1-for-18 in his last 5 games, and probably could use a rest. We'll see if he gets one Sunday. Don't forget fans, it's all about development........ The Stars were blanked for only the 5th time this season, the fewest number of shutouts by June 22 since 1998........ Derek Lee will probably get one more chance to set a club record by getting his 10th win on the earliest date in Stars history. Jeff Bittiger in 1992 rebounded from a 1-5 start to win 9 straight, getting his 10th win on June 30th. The Brewers were reportedly able to sign their #2 pick, Anthony Gwynn, #5 pick, catcher Brian Opdyke, and #8 pick, pitcher Ryan Marion. Gwynn was assigned to Beloit and the latter two were assigned to Arizona. Keep in mind Stars fans, 2 out of every 3 picks in the first ten rounds will be flops, according to Baseball America, the bible of minor league baseball. In 1999, the year Dave Krynzel was drafted in the 1st round by Milwaukee, only two other picks have had any measure of success to date........ One is Jason Belcher, drafted 5th, hitting .324 -- 9th best in the California league. The other is Stars pitcher Ryan Miller, who was the #9 pick, one of the Stars most reliable middle relievers.
  13. Daily Press on RHP Tony Stavros: Sometimes, High Desert reliever Tony Stavros admits, he makes jokes at inappropriate times. Stavros' attitude toward baseball in general is to have fun. Treat every day as it was his last in baseball. Basically, enjoy it. "The whole point of this, from day one, is to have fun," Stavros said. "If I'm not having fun, what's the point of being here." Quietly, Stavros has put together a solid year. The pitcher said he's had two poor outings but the majority of the time, Stavros comes in and keeps hitters quiet. He's had the best success against Stockton. The 22-year-old garnered his lone start against the Ports on May 11 and struck out eight batters over 4 1-3 innings while allowing no runs. He also picked up his first save for High Desert against the Ports on May 27, pitching three perfect innings of relief including six strikeouts. "The coaches and managers, they know," Stavros said. "They know. That's all that matters. "The guys that are in charge, you have to impress them." Stavros wasn't always a middle man. When Stavros started playing in fifth grade, he was a starting pitcher. Last season in Beloit, the redhead became a closer. This year, it's middle relief. Still, it's not too bad for someone who was recruited more for basketball than baseball in high school. Stavros said he had no future in basketball, mostly because he's 6-foot-2 and basically a shooter. So baseball was the way he went and he attended Lane Community College near his hometown of Eugene, Ore. "My freshman year, I started a few games," Stavros said of his time at Lane. "My sophomore year I became their ace. I was 10-1. "It's kind of the same thing here, just work into a role or something. Whatever takes you there I guess." Daily Press on College World Series Memories for Two Mavericks: By MICHAEL ROTHSTEIN/Staff Writer ADELANTO ? For one week every June since 1950, Omaha, Neb. becomes the center of the baseball world. The College World Series takes place in the Midwestern city every year at historic Rosenblatt Stadium. High Desert has two players who played in the June tournament. Both Mark Ernster and Todd West called it the best baseball experience of their lives. "Just to walk around there is something incredible," Ernster said. "Even if you're not playing that day you just go to the game and the scene is just incredible." In 1999, West's Texas Longhorns lost their first two games and were eliminated. Despite the sour ending, West recalled visiting the Omaha area hospitals and the amount of fan support. "I grew up as a kid watching it and to get there was surreal," West said. "It was by far the highlight of my baseball career. I still have the games on tape and I watch them sometimes." As for this year's Series, West predicted Rice would defeat Stanford in the best-of-three game championship. His reasoning ? Rice beat Texas and anyone who defeats the Longhorns has to win. Ernster played for Arizona State in the National Championship game in 1998 against Southern California. USC beat ASU, 21-14. "It was a really good experience," Ernster said. "I'll never forget it."
  14. I have no idea what has gotten into Billy Hall, but I like it!! Yeah BrewDude, for what it's worth, Bill Hall was the post-game interview after the Indy game Saturday, which I caught via webcast. He was very mature in his thoughts, and spoke of the difficulties in bringing a AAA clubhouse together with so many six-year free agents and guys who haven't played with each other for long. Just a little insight into his progression mentally as well in 2003. I don't want to read too much into things right now, but let's see what Hall does over the next five weeks. Eric Young darn near must be moved as of July 31st should the Brewers want to get a sneak August peek at the new and improved Billy.

  17. Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 4, High Desert 1 * sigh * High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks fell to 23 games under .500 with their fourth straight loss, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers by a score of 4-1 at Mavericks Stadium on Saturday night. Over 3,000 fans witnessed a fantastic performance by Mavs starter David Nolasco, who went seven scoreless innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Aaron Dean, who was great in a spot-start situation on Monday night against Lancaster, couldn?t hold the lead, allowing three eighth-inning runs and another in the ninth as the Sixers beat the Mavs for the third straight time overall. Dean (4-3) allowed a two-out single to Greg Jacobs which tied the game at 1-1, as it scored Eddie Menchaca who singled to open the inning. After allowing another hit to John Castellano, Blake Bone snapped the brief tie with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-1. They added a run in the ninth to go up 4-1, as Dean allowed a two-out RBI single to Dustin DeLucchi. The Mavs threatened in the bottom of the ninth as Ralph Santana singled to open the frame and Jason Belcher earned a two-out walk against 66ers reliever Justin Blood. Enmanual Ulloa was then summoned out of the bullpen, striking out Froilan Villanueva on just three pitches to notch his first save of the year. Ryan Ketchner (7-3) earned the win by going three perfect innings of relief. Cha Seung Baek got the start for the 66ers and lasted four innings, allowing just one run on five hits. For the second straight night, no Mavs player recorded more than one hit. They have now been held to just three runs on ten hits in the last two games. The Mavs and 66ers play their final game before the All-Star Break on Sunday evening at 5:05 (7:05 Central). Dan Hall tries to break the Mavs losing streak, as he faces Juan Done of Inland Empire. After three days off, the Mavs return to action on Thursday night in Lake Elsinore against the first place Storm. Daily Press High Desert Notes: High Desert's pitching staff received a present in the club house Friday ? T-shirts. To boost team morale, the bullpen came up with the idea to make shirts with the slogan "Mavericks Armed Forces" scrawled on the front. The idea came from the bullpen and closer Bobby Bystrowski organized it. "We haven't been doing so hot lately so we decided we'd have fun with it," Tony Stavros said. "It's kind of a joke. It's something to make everybody laugh and maybe turn things around." Stavros' father, Larry, and brother, Steven, attended Friday's game. 18. In progress: High Desert 1, Inland Empire (Mariners) 0, after five innings I should call it a night, but this one has me intrigued, based on recent results in Adelanto. RHP David Nolasco had a home ERA of 8.26 in 28.1 IP prior to tonight, yet has tossed five sweet scoreless innings to this point. Florian Villanueva knocked in Jason Belcher earlier. Give the Mavs some audio love tonight at: Audio link: www.hdmavs.com/listen_live.htm By the way, I was mistaken, and Farm Director Reid Nichols is not in California, and apparently has still yet to meet personally with the Mavs' front office or team since the season's start. Our question -- why not? Don't worry, High Desert -- Brewerfan.net remains true http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ...

If there was ever a night for co-players of the game, this is it! 22. You're a good player, Wes Helms. Not perfect, but pretty darn solid. No doubt Corey Hart, among all the close-to-the-majors prospects, could use the most time to hone his game at AA / AAA as the Brewers see fit in 2004 / 2005. Helms takes the pressure off of rushing at least one of the kids, anyway.
  23. Indianapolis 6, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 1 Nine road wins in a row for the Tribe; Bill Hall with three more hits... Indy Site Game Summary: PAWTUCKET, RI -- Amid a steady rain at McCoy Stadium, the Indianapolis Indians handled the elements in defeating the Pawtucket Red Sox 6-1 to extend the Tribe's road winning streak to nine games. Tribe starting pitcher Joe Roa pitched seven innings allowing only one run to pick up his first win of the season for Indianapolis. Roa (1-1) walked only one batter in showing off the form that earned him International League most valuable pitcher honors in 2002. Meanwhile, PawSox starter Steve Woodard pitched into the ninth inning allowing eight hits and five runs over 8.1 innings to take the loss. Woodard (2-4) allowed single runs in both the third and sixth innings before giving up a two-run homer to Jim Rushford with no outs and Bill Hall on first base in the top of the eighth inning. Cody McKay opened up the scoring for Indianapolis with a solo home run leading off the top of the third inning, before the PawSox tied the score in the fourth when Trace Coquillette crossed home plate on a double play groundout by Cesar Crespo. Pete Zoccolillo gave the Tribe the lead for good when he lifted a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Hall to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, as the team went on to add two insurance runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Hall reached base safely four times in the game finishing 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored, improving his batting average to .438 over the eight games since being moved to the leadoff spot last Saturday. Ben Ford relieved Roa to start the eighth inning and recorded the final six outs to earn his first save of the season. Ford allowed only two hits while striking out four batters. The Indians (32-41) and PawSox (41-31) will continue the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. when Glendon Rusch makes his first start of the season for the Indians facing righthander Dicky Gonzalez (3-5, 4.26). The Indians will return to Victory Field on Saturday, June 28th to face the Richmond Braves at 7 p.m. Indianapolis Box Score: GAME DATE: 6/21/03 INDIANAPOLIS 6 AT PAWTUCKET 1 YTD YTD INDIANAPOLIS AB R H BI AVG PAWTUCKET AB R H BI AVG B.Hall SS 4 2 3 0 .271 A.French DH 4 0 0 0 .309 J.Rushford 1B 4 1 1 3 .309 T.Coquillett 2B 3 1 2 0 .279 M.Smith DH 4 0 2 0 .313 A.Abad 1B 3 0 1 0 .277 P.Zoccolillo RF 3 0 0 1 .286 C.Mottola LF 4 0 1 0 .371 D.Jennings LF 3 0 0 0 .268 C.Crespo RF 4 0 0 0 .221 W.Veras 3B 4 0 0 0 .233 A.Dominique CAT 4 0 1 0 .256 C.McKay CAT 4 2 2 1 .197 A.Brown CF 4 0 2 0 .261 J.Conti CF 4 0 0 0 .220 E.Snyder 3B 4 0 0 0 .204 S.Scarboroug 2B 3 1 0 0 .188 A.Santos SS 3 0 1 0 .231 J.Roa PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 S.Woodard PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 B.Ford PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 K.Tolar PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 TOTALS 33 6 8 5 TOTALS 33 1 8 0 INDIANAPOLIS 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 2 2- 6 8 1 PAWTUCKET 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0- 1 8 0 E--B.Ford. 24. RHP Calvin Carpenter, the 20-year-old 2001 6th rounder of which big things were hoped for at Beloit this season, has been activated from the Snappers' disabled list and has been re-assigned to the Arizona Rookie League squad, as the Brewers will ease him back into action, it seems. Richardson, Henderson, Steitz, Carpenter -- we're starting to see some progress on the "guys coming back from injury" front.
