In Progress: Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 10, High Desert 1, after six innings Jethawks score six in the sixth inning to break it open; Mavs have only mustered three hits thus far... I will say the Mavericks have a very, very neat promotion for Saturday in which all the Mavs will wear classic ball-and-glove 1980's Brewer jerseys, which will then be auctioned off as game-worn jerseys after the game for charity. High Desert front office management seems to be top-notch, and I know they were truly pleased when the Brewers became the first organization to renew their player development agreement with them. Of course, that was Dean Taylor and Greg Riddoch's call. It'll be interesting to see what happens after the 2004 season when renewal time comes up again... -

Details on the Beloit loss from the Kane County site and perspective: The audio archive is already available at the Cougars' site, which I'll repeat is such a cool feature; too bad the games haven't been worth going back and checking out... Geneva, IL ? The Cougars (31-17) extended their winning streak to three straight games with a 2-1 victory against the Beloit Snappers (20-25) on Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Kane County improved their record to 6-0 against Beloit and 20-4 against the Western Division. Drew Dickinson (6-2) pitched a terrific game scattering just two hits in seven innings. Dickinson allowed one unearned run, walked three and fanned four. Chris Shank pitched a perfect eighth, and Jeff Muessig yielded a hit and a strikeout in Beloit?s final at-bat to earn his 10th save of the season. Tom Wilhelmsen (4-2) suffered his second loss of the season for Beloit. Both runs he allowed were unearned on six hits, five walks, and five strikeouts. All of the runs in tonight?s game were scored in a very ironic third inning. For the second straight night, the Snappers plated home the first run. Prince Fielder reached on a throwing error by shortstop John McCurdy, scoring Callix Crabbe from second base. In the Cougars third, Fielder committed a throwing error allowing McCurdy to score from second base. McCurdy began the rally with a two-out single off Wilhelmsen. After a walk to Nelson Cruz, Brant Colamarino (2-for-3) blooped a two-out RBI single, proving to be the game-winning hit. John Baker singled in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to 10-games. Baker had a 10-game hitting streak earlier in the season (April 6-18). The Snappers offense came from John Vanden Berg, who finished 2-for-3, both hits were singles. The Cougars and the Snappers play game three of their four-game series on Saturday night ? game time is 6:00 PM. The pitching match-up features RHP Joe Blanton (2-6, 3.42) taking on RHP Dennis Sarfate (3-2, 2.20). -

Indianapolis 4, Ottawa (Orioles) 0 Indy Site Game Summary: OTTAWA, ONT. -- The Indianapolis Indians snapped a six-game losing streak by posting the team's first shutout victory since April 11 with a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Lynx on Friday night. Three Indians pitchers combined to limit the Lynx (25-22) to only four hits as starter David Manning improved his record to 3-1 for the Indians (16-29). Manning pitched five innings allowing three hits, none of which left the infield, and walked three while striking out five to lower is ERA to 1.53 in his sixth appearance since being moved into the starting rotation on April 23. Shane Nance relieved Manning to start the sixth inning and pitched two scoreless frames allowing one hit while striking out three before turning the game over to Roberto Giron to start the eighth. Giron pitched two hitless innings to preserve the shutout and earn his fifth save of the season. Overshadowed by the stellar pitching performance turned in by the Tribe was Lynx starter Rafael Pina, who took the loss in his first start at Triple-A in 2003 despite allowing only five hits in seven innings pitched. Pina's one blemish came when Mark Smith led off the second inning off with a walk and moved to third on Jim Rushford's double, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Keith Luuloa followed with a sacrifice fly which allowed Smith to score, and then Cody McKay singled to bring home Rushford for a 2-0 Indians lead. The Indians then loaded the bases on consecutive one-out singles by Wilton Veras and Steve Scarborough for the top of the Indians lineup, but Pina got Jason Conti to fly out to shallow right field and Bill Hall to ground into a fielders' choice to end the threat, and keep the Lynx in the ballgame. Ottawa's best opportunity to score came in the bottom of the third inning when Manning issued back-to-back one out walks before Smith made the play of the game in right field, diving to make the catch of a fly ball in the right field corner off the bat of Eddy Garabato which prevented the Lynx from capitalizing on the two free passes. Ottawa stranded nine runners in the game. The Tribe added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning when Steve Scarborough lined a single to left off of reliever Hector Carrasco to score both Veras and Luuloa, giving Giron a 4-0 cushion heading into the bottom of the inning. The Indians and Lynx will continue the four-game series from North of the border on Saturday evening when Indians manager Cecil Cooper sends Dave Burba (2-3, 3.23) to face Rigo Beltran (2-0, 1.82) and the Lynx at 6:05 p.m. The two teams will conclude the series on Sunday afternoon and the Tribe will return to Victory Field on Monday evening for a Memorial Day contest with the Rochester Red Wings at 6:00 p.m. Indianapolis Box Score: We really should focus on David Manning's success soon, even if he's 30 years old... Minor Transactions, May, Bausher to Beloit; Thread Closed
MassBrew replied to MassBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
We've yet to see any confirmation on the Brewers' web site or another transaction wire, but Baseball America reports that Milwaukee has signed RHP Ben Ford. Ford is 6'7", 225 lbs. and will be 28 in August. He was the Yankees' 20th round draft pick in 1994 out of a community college. Ford has two brief stints in the majors, with Arizona in 1998 and the Yankees in 2000. Interestingly, Ford's first professional start came in the big leagues with the Yankees, having appeared solely as a reliever until then. He missed the entire 2001 season with a shoulder injury. The Cubs signed him for AAA Iowa in 2002, and he appeared in 32 games, making 23 starts, allowing 157 hits in 142 IP, walking 73, and striking out only 84. Ford has yet to pitch in 2003. You would think he might be a candidate to plug into the open spot in the Indy rotation, but you wonder if maybe he's been getting his arm stretched out at extended spring somewhere or not. Ben Ford Career Statistics: www.sports-wired.com/mlb/...sp?ID=5322 BA isn't always perfect with their transaction news, but I imagine we'll see a confirmation of this signing soon. -
Indianapolis Media Notes for the weekend: The notes won't change during the course of this road weekend series, so I'll just link to them now rather than cut and paste bits and pieces; the most interesting items include a Jayson Durocher update, the fact that a fifth starting pitcher still hasn't been established (due by Monday), and the fact that the Tribe hasn't been 15 games below .500 since late in the 1993 season! And it's only May! The folks in Indianapolis may be looking at a team with an eventual record they haven't seen the likes of in decades. The Brewers will have to earn a LOT of good will with Indy management next season in order to extend this player development agreement beyond 2004. Link: www.indyindians.com/press...notes.html

The home run for Basil was his first since April 17 at Dayton. The Cougars added some insurance in the bottom of the eighth inning against Ryan Trytten. The two-out RBI was the 12th for Baker with runners in scoring position and two outs. The Cougars and the Snappers meet again tomorrow night at Elfstrom Stadium ? game time is 6:30 PM. Drew Dickinson LHP (5-2, 3.06) takes on RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (4-1, 2.31), who pitches for the Snappers. Ottawa (Orioles) 3, Indianapolis 2 Another stellar day for the farm teams -- not; Steve Scarborough briefly a hero, then a goat; Jayson Durocher struggles... Indy Site Game Summary: OTTAWA, ONT. -- In his first game since being called up from Single-A, Ottawa's Brandon Littleton scored the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Ottawa Lynx (25-21) defeated the Indianapolis Indians 3-2 at Lynx Stadium on Thursday night. Littleton's Triple-A debut ruined a quality performance on the mound by the Tribe's Nate Teut and sends the Indians (15-29) to their sixth straight loss. Jayson Durocher made his third one-inning rehabilitation start of the season for the Indians, but unlike the first two outings was unable to make quick work of the top of the oppenents' order. The Lynx put together four singles including RBI basehits by Jack Cust and Robert Machado to take an early 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, Lynx starter John Stephens baffled Indians bats for first five innings of the ballgame, allowing only two hits before taking the mound to start the sixth. After Cody McKay popped out to shortstop, Steve Scarborough brought the Tribe offense to life by hitting a line-drive solo home run down the left field line to bring the Indians within one run at 2-1. Then, following a two-out double to dead-center field by Bill Hall and a walk to Jason Conti, Mark Smith tied the score with an opposite field double to right field scoring Hall. The double extended Smith's road game hitting streak to 15 games, the second longest such streak in the International League this season. Teut, making his second appearance out of the bullpen in relief of Durocher this season, came on to begin the second inning and did not allow a hit in his first four innings for the Tribe. Teut pitched brilliantly through the seventh inning allowing only two hits while getting help from an Indians defense that turned double plays to end the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Leading off the bottom of the eighth inning Littleton, fresh from Single-A Delmarva of the South Atlantic League, doubled to left field and moved to third on Joey Hammond's single putting runners on first and third with no outs against Teut. After striking out Eddy Garabito for the first out, Teut was relieved by Danny Kolb to face Felix Escalona. Escalona hit a ground ball booted by shortstop Steve Scarborough allowing Littleton to score easily from third for with the winning run. Teut dropped to 1-2 on the season despite lowering his ERA to 3.18 in pitching 6.1 innings allowing four hits and the lone run. Bill Pulsipher, who came on to relieve Stephens to begin the seventh, recorded his first victory of the season by pitching two scoreless innings for Ottawa. Mike Garcia retired the Tribe in order in the ninth to record his 12th save of the season. The Indians will look to gather their first win of this seven game road trip on Friday night when the two teams meet in the second of this four game series. David Manning (2-1, 2.13) will pitch for Indianapolis, and Sean Douglass (5-3, 3.60) for Ottawa. The Indians return home to Victory Field on Monday for a Memorial Day contest with Rochester. -

Indianapolis Media Notes for Thursday: Notice that LHP Nate Teut, not RHP David Manning, starts tonight (due to the rainout of the prior Indy game)... TONIGHT: The Indians head to Ottawa for the only time in 2003. The Tribe is on the last half of a seven-game road trip. The Tribe dropped all three games at Buffalo earlier this week. The Indians went 3-4 against the Lynx last season taking two of three contests played at Lynx Stadium. The Indians are 19-19 against Ottawa since joining the IL in 1998. The Indians are in the midst of a five-game losing streak with the last win coming May 14 against Pawtucket. The Tribe's longest losing streak this season was seven games from April 13-20. The Indians have scored just one run and are hitting .144 (13-for-90) on the trip. The Indians are 13 games under .500 for the first time since Aug. 13 of last season. The low-water mark last year was 14 games below .500 on Aug. 2. MONDAY: The Indians got back on the scoreboard and managed seven hits against Buffalo, but lost 3-1. Joe Lawrence and Jason Conti had two hits for the Tribe. Nate Grindell, Victor Martinez and Coco Crisp drove in runs for Buffalo. DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher is with the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher has made three appearances working one inning each time. He is scheduled throw two innings or 30 pitches tonight. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut makes his fourth appearance for the Indians since coming over from Iowa on May 2. Teut has turned in two strong efforts in a row allowing three runs in his last 11.1 innings (2.38 ERA). He faced Buffalo on May 10 and earned his first win of the season allowing just one run in a season-high 6.1 innings. He pitched shutout ball over the first six innings. In his last start, Teut retired 13 of the first 14 Pawtucket batters he faced on May 15. He finished allowing two runs in five innings. High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? In the only 10 AM game this season, it was the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes who did the rising and the shining, as they scored nine, first-inning runs, on their way to a 12-9 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Thursday morning at Mavericks Stadium. Mavs right-hander Chris Saenz (4-4) had his roughest outing this season, as he faced eight men in the first inning and didn?t retire a batter. Aaron Dean came on and allowed a run as well, as the Quakes took a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the first inning. Nick Gorneault and Jason Aspito each had two-run singles for the Quakes. After Mark Ernster?s two-run double off Quakes starter Ervin Santana (4-1) put the Mavs on the board in the bottom of the first, the Quakes got two more in the second off Dean to take a commanding 11-2 lead. The Mavs would rally though, scoring the next seven runs to pull to within two at 11-9. The Mavs got two in the fifth, one in the seventh, and then four in the bottom of the eighth. Scott Candelaria capped off the inning by hitting a run-scoring triple off the wall in left field that was misplayed by left-fielder David Gates. Candelaria was waived home by Manager Tim Blackwell, but was thrown out for the final out of the inning. In the ninth, the Quakes got a huge insurance run off Jeff Hundley to take a 12-9 lead, as Justin Turner picked up an RBI single to score Michael Napoli who doubled to open the inning. The Mavs brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Scott Schneider picked up his third save of the year by getting Ozzie Chavez to hit into a fielder?s choice to end the game. Mike Eylward led six Quakes players who had at least two hits, going 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. The Mavs send Dan Hall (4-3) to the hill on Friday night against the Lancaster JetHawks at 7:05 (9:05 Central). -

Final: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 12, High Desert 9 Down 9-0 before coming to bat even once, the Mavs managed to get the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Ozzie Chavez grounded out to end it. We'll let the High Desert site game summary fill in all the details later on. For entertainment value, you couldn't help but love when Mike Lindskog actually had to go off the air for a few seconds to chase away some kids who wouldn't stop messing with the crowd microphone placed outside of his booth, despite his repeated on-air efforts telling them to stop. Now that's minor league baseball http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -
In progress: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 7, High Desert 0, nobody retired yet Yeah, you read that right. As Mike Lindskog noted, apparently RHP Chris Saenz isn't a morning guy. Eight batters, six base hits, two walks, not a single out before being pulled for RHP Aaron Dean, who has allowed the seventh base hit the first time through the Rancho lineup. Big-time ugh... Still In Progress Update: Rancho Cucamonga 11, High Desert 9, after eight innings The eighth inning ended with Manager Tim Blackwell waving in Scott Candelaria for an attempted but not successful inside-the-park HR. Instead, the hit went as an RBI triple as the Mavs scored four in the eighth to close the gap. Nice job by the bullpen today; never give up on a High Desert broadcast, especially at home...

BA lists both Dan Kolb's pretty clearly, one at Indy, one at High Desert. Not sure what you're "not" seeing, Tobester. SS Josh Murray has been moved from the Beloit to the Helena roster. Details here from the Snappers site: www.snappersbaseball.com/...7d8571ef1e Just a paperwork note here, mentioning that young Venezuelan OF Octavio Amaya, an offseason signee, was taken out of the the Arizona / Helena mix when he was assigned to the DSL earlier this week. -

High Desert Site Game Summary: Johnny Raburn legged out his first double -- he must have been reading yesterday; when I checked the audio after five, Jeff Robinson's pitch count was at 55, so he's probably still limited to about 70; not sure why Jason Belcher was removed mid-way through, unless it was simply to get Froilan Villanueva some AB's... ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks ended a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night as they defeated the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final score of 12-5 at Mavericks Stadium. As impressive as 12 runs on 16 hits sounds, it was the Quakes who contributed to the Mavericks win the most with five errors. Those five errors led to eight unearned runs in the first four innings. The Quakes took a 1-0 lead in the first as Jeff Mathis hit a solo home run against Mavs starter Jeff Robinson (1-0). Robinson would shake off the homer, allowing just the one run in his 5.2 innings before leaving due to pitch count. The Mavs would answer in the third inning, scoring seven times against Quakes starter Phil Wilson (1-1). Rancho committed three errors in the inning as all seven runs were unearned. Dan Boyd?s RBI double tied the game at 1-1. Johnny Raburn?s booted ground ball drove in a run from third as the Mavs took the lead for good at 2-1. Mark Ernster knocked in a pair with a two-out hit to make it 4-1. Todd West and Joel Alvarado each had run-scoring hits to make it a 7-1 lead after three. The Mavs poured it on with four more in the fourth, as Ernster picked up a bases loaded, two-run single. On the play, left-fielder David Gates would misplay the ball, as Scott Candelaria would score from first and allow Ernster to take second. Ernster would score on an Alvarado hit to complete the inning. Robinson was solid, in earning his first win as a Maverick since the 2001 season. Over 5.2 innings, he scattered eight hits, while striking out six, without walking a man. He departed with the bases loaded in the sixth and two outs, before Justin Gordon came on to get Mike Eylward to ground out to end the threat. Gordon earned his second save as he went the final 3.1 innings. The Quakes did add two in the seventh and two in the ninth. Tommy Murphy and Jeff Mathis each had three hits to lead the Quakes offensively. The Mavs will send Chris Saenz to the hill on Thursday morning for a special Safe & Sober Day at Mavericks Stadium. Saenz (4-3) will be opposed by Ervin Santana (3-1). Game time is 10:05 IN THE AM (12 NOON CENTRAL!)
