Final: Mississippi 5 Huntsville 0 (Game 2) Mississippi swept the double header by taking the nightcap 5-0 in 8 innings. Stars lefty starter Alan Williams pitched great. In his second career start, Williams went a season high 5 innings. He gave up only 4 hits, no walks and struck out 4 as he kept the hot hitting Braves off the scoreboard. Williams was consistently in the 88-91 MPH range, per Alex Cohen on the Stars broadcast. Williams threw 67 pitches, 40 for strikes. Reliever Greg Holle had a nice bounce back game, pitching 2 scoreless innings, giving up only 1 hit. Unfortunately, the Braves were able to break through in the 8th against closer Casey Medlen. Medlen (1-2) took the loss as he gave up 5 earned runs on 6 hits and a hit batter. The loss leaves the Stars record 9-16 including a 3-12 record at The Joe. Remember, the Stars starter the season 5-1. That's a 4-15 record since. Ouch. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville was held to 5 hits, drew no walks, and struck out 13 times while being shut out for the 2nd time in 3 games. The other game, they scored 1 run. Shea Vucinich, Kentrail Davis, and Jason Rogers each had a double and Nick Shaw and Mike Walker both singled. Team RISP: 1-for-6. Team LOB: 5. Huntsville Play By Play How bad is it going for Huntsville right now? How about back to back doubles and you DON'T score... Huntsville Bottom of the 1st Nick Shaw lines out to right fielder Jose Martinez. Shea Vucinich doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Dan Brewer. Kentrail Davis doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Jose Martinez. Shea Vucinich to 3rd. Jason Rogers strikes out swinging. Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging. Vucinich was tagging on Davis's double, so he only made it to 3rd. Tomorrow is an off day. The Stars and the Mobile Bay Bears (11-14) will start a 5 game series on Wednesday. Righty Jimmy Nelson will take the mound for Huntsville. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 Central Make sure to join Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen at 6:50 for his pregame show.

Final: Mississippi 4 Huntsville1 (Game One) The Mississippi Braves won game one, and the series, with a 4-1 win. Stars starter Andy Moye took the loss. Moye worked 5 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. Of the 85 pitches Moye threw, only 48 were for strikes. The 4 walks allowed tied a season high for Moye. Moye has started 5 games so far, two games he walked 4, two games he walked 1 and one game he had no walks. So the walks are a bit unusual for him. Brewers starter Mark Rogers made another rehab appearance tonight. He went 1 2/3 innings, allowing a run on a no-doubt-about-it shot. This was the only hit he allowed but he did walk 3 and struck out 1. Rogers threw 33 pitches, 14 for strikes. Per Alex Cohen, Rogers was consistantly 88-91 and topped out at 93, so his top end was up from last outing, but the range is pretty much the same. He sounded like he was leaving his pitches up, per the broadcast. Huntsville Box Score The Stars were held to 1 run on 5 hits in game one tonight. Catcher Adam Weisenburger had 2 hits and drove in the lone run. Weisenburger also had the only extra base hit with a double in the 7th. 2nd baseman Nick Shaw reached base twice with a single and a walk. Brock Kjeldgaard and Mike Walker had the other 2 hits. Team RISP: 1-for-9. Team LOB: 6. It sounds like a broken record because it's been an issue all season. Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen mentioned the Stars lead the leage in runners left on base. As a team, the Stars are at the bottom half of the Souther League in most offensive catagories. The only catagories they are in the upper half are walks drawn and OBP. On a positive note, the Stars did play another game error-free Huntsville Play By Play The Stars rally could have been better. Huntsville Bottom of the 4th Kentrail Davis strikes out swinging. Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a line drive to left fielder Alden Carrithers. Mike Walker singles on a ground ball to center fielder Mycal Jones. Brock Kjeldgaard to 3rd. Adam Weisenburger singles on a line drive to right fielder Jose Martinez. Brock Kjeldgaard scores. Mike Walker to 2nd. Hector Gomez strikes out swinging. Andy Moye strikes out swinging. I'll be back later for a recap of Game 2. Alan Williams is making his 2nd start of the season for Huntsville.

Final: Mississippi 14 Huntsville 0 Too bad the rain didn't wash this one out. The Mississippi Braves scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning en route to an easy 14-0 win Saturday night at The Joe. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann lasted only 2 2/3 innings tonight. He allowed 8 runs, 7 earned on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Jungmann also hit 2 batters and threw 2 wild pitches in a truly forgettable performance. Jungmann is now 1-4 with an ERA just under 8. Mark Williams pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Both runs were scored on solo home runs. 40 man roster pitcher Santo Manzanillo pitched 2 innings, allowing 4 runs, 2 earned on 4 hits and 1 walk. Lefty Brian Garman finished up with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Huntsville Box Score The Stars were limited to 6 hits tonight, all singles, as they were shut out for the 3rd time in 23 games so far this season. Shea Vucinich and Kentrail Davis both reached base twice, each with a single and a walk. Nick Shaw, Brock Kjeldgaard, Robinzon Diaz and Rene Tosoni had the other hits for Huntsville. FIELDING E: Vucinich 3 (3, fielding, fielding, throw). PB: Diaz 2 (2). Rough night for Diaz behind the plate. The 2 passes balls along with the 2 wild pitches thrown by Jungmann, and Mississippi also had 2 stolen bases. Huntsville Play By Play Team RISP: 0-for-8. Team LOB: 8. 4 times the Stars had a runner on 2nd with 1 out and only once were they able to advance a runner, and that was on a ground out to the right side. Game 4 is a 4:03 start on Sunday afternoon. Andy Moye (1-1, 4.34) will attempt to shut down the red hot Braves bats. Don't forget to join Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen at 3:48 for the pregame show.

Rain Delay Dooms Stars Against M-Braves By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars Headlined by a hour-plus rain delay, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Mississippi Braves by a final score of 8-4 at Joe Davis Stadium on Friday night. Prior to Mother Nature making her presence felt, the game featured three ties and two lead changes. Once the Stars and M-Braves traded a run in the first inning, Mississippi was able to regain their early lead in the fourth inning with one pitch from Stars starting pitcher Ariel Pena. To leadoff the inning, catcher Braeden Schlehuber crushed an opposite-field homer over the LF wall to make the score 2-1. The score remaining like that until the bottom of the fifth, where the Stars mounted a comeback and gained their first and only lead of the game. To begin the inning, back-to-back singles from third basemen Mike Walker and center fielder Rene Tosoni helped chase M-Braves starter J.R Graham from the game. Upon reliever Ian Thomas entering the game for Graham, the lefty was greeted to the game with a RBI single from shortstop Hector Gomez that tied the score up a two apiece. Later in the inning, a two-run single from second basemen Nick Shaw off of Thomas made the score 4-2. Unfortunately for the Stars, that lead was short-lived. In the seventh inning, a leadoff triple from M-Braves left fielder Dan Brewer in the seventh inning off of R.J Seidel sparked the beginning of a rally. Following a walk issued to right fielder Jose Martinez, a RBI groundout from first basemen Christian Marrero scored Brewer to cut the Stars lead to one. One batter later, a RBI double from shortstop Jaime Pedroza tied up the game. Then, to begin the eigith inning, reliever Greg Holle (L, 0-1) issued back-to-back singles to Schlehuber and pinch-hitter Barrett Kleinknecht and a walk to Brewer before the rains came. Immediately after a 70-minute delay, Holle stayed in the game and was welcomed by a two-run single by Martinez and a two-run double by Marrero to put the M-Braves on top for good. On offense, the Stars were paced by Gomez, Walker and right fielder Kentrail Davis with two hits apiece. For Davis, the multi-hit game was his third in his last four contests. The Stars and M-Braves will play game three of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Saturday. Huntsville will send RHP Taylor Jungmann (1-3, 5.62 ERA) to the bump to square off against Mississippi LHP Alex Wood (0-1, 0.82 ERA). Each pitcher is ranked as top-10 prospect in their own respective organizations. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.

Final: Mississippi 8 Huntsville 4 Huntsville dropped game 2 of their series with the Mississippi Braves 8-4 last night. Huntsville Starter Ariel Pena battled through 6 innings and was in line for a win before the Braves rallied against the Stars bullpen. Pena allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks. He didn't strike anyone out and allowed a solo home run. Pena threw 89 pitches with only 55 for strikes. The Braves then tied the game against R.J. Seidel. Seidel pitched the 7th and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk and recorded the only strikeout by a Stars pitcher in the game. This was the 1st time Seidel allowed runs since 4/12. Greg Holle came on to pitch the 8th. He allowed hits to the 1st 2 batters he faced. Then, the game went into a 1:10 rain delay. Holle stayed in and the Braves put up a 4 spot against him and their comeback was complete. Holle was tagged with the loss. Thomas Keeling pitched a scoreless 9th. This was Keeling's 4th straight appearance without allowing a run. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville pounded out 10 hits, all singles, and drew 4 walks but were only able to push 4 runs across. Kentrail Davis, Mike Walker, and Hector Gomez each had 2 hits for Huntsville. Nick Shaw had a single and 2 RBI's and Brock Kjeldgaard and Gomez drove in the other runs. Huntsville Play By Play A baserunning mistake potentially prevented a bigger inning for Huntsville. Huntsville Bottom of the 6th Mike Walker singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jose Martinez. Christian Marrero out at 3rd on the throw, center fielder Brock Kjeldgaard to shortstop Hector Gomez to pitcher Greg Holle to third baseman Mike Walker. Jaime Pedroza flies out to left fielder T. Mittelstaedt. A couple of quick notes. Huntsville played clean defense with no errors. Good to see considering their troubles earlier this season. Also, the Stars stole 3 bases. They are not known as a running team as the 3 bases increased their season total to 11. Game 3 is scheduled for 6:43 tonight. Taylor Jungmann is on the mound for Huntsville.

Final: Huntsville 13 Mississippi 8 The Stars erupted for their biggest offensive output on the young season tonight, scoring 13 runs on 16 hits in defeating the Mississippi Braves 13-8. Stars starter Jimmy Nelson was very solid once again. Nelson pitched 6 strong innings, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 hits and no walks. Nelson also struck out 6 while earning his 3rd win of the season. The bullpen behind Nelson was a little shaky tonight. Rehabbing pitcher Mark Rogers pitched the 7th allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. Rogers topped out at 90 on the radar gun. Rogers threw 36 pitches, 19 for strikes. Seems like a step back compared to his outing on Tuesday night. Eric Marzec also had some difficulties tonight, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits over 1 1/3 innings. Closer Casey Medlen came on to record the final 2 outs to end the game. Huntsville Box Score The Huntsville bats were alive tonight. The Stars were led by the middle of their lineup as Jason Rogers went 3-5 with 3 runs scoed and 3 RBI's, Kentrail Davis also went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's. Davis had both a double and home run. And Brock Kjeldgaard went, you guessed it, 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI's. Kjeldgaard hits were all for extra bases, a double and 2 home runs. Coming into tonights game, the Stars has a combined 7 home runs in 20 games, so their 3 homer output is a big development. Lead off hitter Nick Shaw went 4-5 with 2 runs scored and an RBI tonight. Team RISP: 8-for-13. Team LOB: 6. Great to see the Stars getting the hits with runners in scoring position. It's been an area they have struggled with throughout the season. Great night for Huntsville in this area. Huntsville Play By Play Davis and Kjeldgaard go back to back Huntsville Bottom of the 5th Nick Shaw singles on a ground ball to center fielder Mycal Jones. Final: Birmingham 8 Huntsville 3 Birmingham jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead and never looked back as the Barons won today 8-3. Alan Williams made his 1st professional start for the Stars. Williams went 4 innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 of them earned, on 6 hits and 2 walks. The lefthander struck out 4 and threw 41 of his 70 pitches for strikes. Williams got better as the game went along. Just a guess, but it may have been that he was trying to pace himself knowing he was going to be in there for a while, unlike his typical relief appearances. During the broadcast, Alex Cohen mentioned Williams was in the 87-89 range. Following Williams on the mound today was Mark Williams. Mark Williams worked 2 innings and allowed 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 1 walk. Brian Garman finished the game for Huntsville, allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits and a walk. Huntsville Box Score On the offensive side, the Stars were held to only 6 hits today. 2 each from T.J. Mittlestaedt and Brock Kjeldgaard. Mike Walker broke out of an 0-10 streak with a solo home run in the 2nd inning. It was Walker's 2nd homer this season. Kentrail Davis had the other hit for Huntsville. BIRMINGHAM FIELDING E: McCray (1, fielding), Saladino 2 (4, fielding, throw), Earley (1, fielding), Black, Da (1, missed catch). HUNTSVILLE: Team RISP: 2-for-11. Team LOB: 11. Birmingham was giving Huntsville chances. 5 Barons errors today helped put Stars runners on base, but another day where the clutch hit was missing. A positive note is that catcher Shawn Zarraga is available again after a minor injury suffered a couple days ago. Huntsville Play By Play Huntsville's 2 out 2 run rally in the 7th, with some help from Birmingham Huntsville Top of the 7th Pitching Change: Ryan Buch replaces Stephen McCray. Nick Shaw flies out to center fielder Jared Mitchell. T. J. Mittelstaedt strikes out swinging. Jason Rogers reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Tyler Saladino. Kentrail Davis singles on a line drive to right fielder Trayce Thompson. Jason Rogers to 2nd. Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a line drive to left fielder Michael Earley. Jason Rogers scores. Kentrail Davis scores. Brock Kjeldgaard to 2nd. Fielding error by left fielder Michael Earley. Mike Walker walks. Pitching Change: Taylor Thompson replaces Ryan Buch. Rene Tosoni flies out to center fielder Jared Mitchell. I really wish there was more to say today. The Stars end their road trip losing the last 3 games and another series. After opening the season by going 5-1, they have now lost 11 of 14 to put their record at 8-12. But, it's early still, 120 games to go. Huntsville returns to "The Joe" tomorrow evening to begin a 5 game series with the Mississippi Braves. The Braves have been hot, going 8-2 in their last 10. Jimmy Nelson will take the mound for the Stars, looking again to play the role of stopper. Game time is scheduled for 6:43. Don't forget to join Alex Cohen for his pregame show starting at 6:28.

Final: Birmingham 5 Huntsville 1 The Stars and Barons were locked up in a pitchers duel until Birmingham broke the game open with a 3 run 8th to take game four of the series 5-1. Stars starter Andy Moye was saddled with the loss. He deserved a better fate. Moye went 5 innings allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and no walks while striking out 6. Moye threw 81 pitches, 53 for strikes. The 2 Barons runs scored on a 2nd inning home run. Stars reliever Greg Holle pitched the final 2 innings tonight. After cruising through his 1st inning of relief, Holle ran into trouble in his second inning, allowing 3 runs, 2 earned on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 1. The big news on the night for the Brewers/Stars was the outing for Mark Rogers on his rehab assignment. Rogers went 1 inning, allowing a hit and a walk. He threw 17 pitches, 10 for strikes. Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen noted Rogers was up to 92 per the Stars videographer. Based on his spring outings, it appears his velocity was better tonight. Hopefully he continues to get stronger and can work his way back to Milwaukee. Huntsville Box Score On offense, the story tonight was Jason Rogers, who ended up a single short for the cycle. Rogers tripled in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, and drove in the Stars lone run with his homer in the 6th. He had a chance in the 8th for the single, but was unintentionally-intentionally walked. Second baseman Nick Shaw, with 2 singles, and designated hitter Shea Vucinich, with 2 walks. were the only other Stars hitters to reach base more than once. Rene Tosoni and Hector Gomez each had a single tonight. Team RISP: 0-for-11. Team LOB: 9. The Stars had their chances, but just couldn't come up with that timely hit tonight. Huntsville Play By Play One example of Huntsville's missed opportunities tonight: Huntsville Top of the 2nd Jason Rogers triples (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Jared Mitchell. Brock Kjeldgaard pops out softly to third baseman Daniel Wagner. Mike Walker strikes out on a foul tip. Robinzon Diaz pops out to second baseman Tyler Saladino. And again: Huntsville Top of the 4th Jason Rogers doubles (5) on a ground ball to left fielder Jared Mitchell, deflected by third baseman Daniel Wagner. Brock Kjeldgaard flies out softly to right fielder Keenyn Walker. Mike Walker called out on strikes. Robinzon Diaz grounds out, shortstop Marcus Semien to first baseman Andy Wilkins. Birmingham sealing the game with their 8th inning rally Birmingham Bottom of the 8th Daniel Wagner singles on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Keenyn Walker out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Greg Holle to first baseman Jason Rogers. Daniel Wagner to 2nd. Marcus Semien grounds out, shortstop Hector Gomez to first baseman Jason Rogers. Trayce Thompson walks. Andy Wilkins singles on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Daniel Wagner scores. Trayce Thompson scores. Andy Wilkins advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by right fielder Kentrail Davis. Dan Black singles on a ground ball to center fielder Rene Tosoni. Andy Wilkins scores. Jared Mitchell lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard Brunch with the Stars tomorrow. Game 5 of this 5 game series will begin at 11:00 with Alex's pregame show starting at 10:45. Lefty Alan Williams, who has been very good for the Stars out of the bullpen, will start in place of the injured Arcenio Leon.

Mark Rogers on his rehab assignment with Huntsville is in pitching in the bottom of the 6th.

Final: Birmingham 3 Huntsville 1 The Birmingham Barons, behind a very strong pitching performance from Erik Johnson, held the Stars bats in check as Birmingham took game 3 this afternoon 3-1. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann pitched a good game himself. Jungmann, the Brewers # 2 overall prospect, went 6 innings allowing a run on 5 hits and 4 walks. Santo Manzanillo pitched the final 2 innings today, allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits and 3 walks. Alex Cohen mentioned during the broadcast that Manzanillo was in the 95-96 range today according to stadium radar gun. Walks have been a problem for Stars pitching all season. Currently, the Stars lead the Southern League in walks allowed with 97 in 18 games. Chattanooga is second with 73 in 18 games. Ariel Pena leads all pitchers with 14 walks, Jungmann is tied for 3rd with 11, Manzanillo is 6th with 10, and Arcenio Leon is 8th with 9. Hopefully this trend doesn't continue. Huntsville Box Score The Stars were limited to 4 hits and were kept off the scoreboard until the 9th. Kentrail Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard were the only Stars that reached base more than once. Davis on 2 walks and Kjeldgaard with a single and a walk. Nick Shaw had the only extra base hit with a double in the 3rd. Rene Tosoni and Adam Weisenburger had the other hits for Huntsville. The Stars struck out 11 times today, after striking out 13 times yesterday. This has been an issue for Stars hitters so far this season. They are now leading the league in strikeouts with 152. Jacksonville is 2nd with 136. Much like the walks with the pitching staff, here's hoping this can be turned around. After leaving the game early yesterday, Alex mentioned that catcher Shawn Zarraga is day to day with a minor groin injury. On a positive note, Brewers pitcher Mark Rogers will begin a rehabilitation assignment with the Stars starting tomorrow. Huntsville Play By Play Those lead off walks almost always come back to bite ya. Birmingham Bottom of the 2nd Andy Wilkins walks. Dan Black singles on a line drive to center fielder Rene Tosoni. Andy Wilkins to 2nd. Tyler Saladino singles on a line drive to center fielder Rene Tosoni. Andy Wilkins to 3rd. Dan Black to 2nd. Miguel Gonzalez grounds into a force out, second baseman Nick Shaw to shortstop Hector Gomez. Andy Wilkins scores. Dan Black to 3rd. Tyler Saladino out at 2nd. Miguel Gonzalez to 1st. Michael Earley grounds into a double play, shortstop Hector Gomez to second baseman Nick Shaw to first baseman Jason Rogers. Miguel Gonzalez out at 2nd. The Stars tried to rally and did get a run across in the 9th, but it was not enough. Huntsville Top of the 9th Kentrail Davis walks. Jason Rogers grounds out, shortstop Marcus Semien to first baseman Dan Black. Kentrail Davis to 2nd. Mike Walker walks. Brock Kjeldgaard walks. Kentrail Davis to 3rd. Mike Walker to 2nd. Adam Weisenburger flies out to right fielder Keenyn Walker in foul territory. T. J. Mittelstaedt flies out to right fielder Keenyn Walker. Game 4 is tomorrow night. Right hander Andy Moye will take the mound for Huntsville. Game time is 7:05 Central. Don't forget to join Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen for the pre game show starting at 6:50.

I think he's someone they like, but I don't know if they view him as a prospect. He was a non roster invitee this past spring. As long as he keeps getting outs, he'll get noticed. If not by Milwaukee, by another organization.

Link Report for Sun. 4/21 -- Rattlers Return Home
Minigoon replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Final: Huntsville 8 Birmingham 3 It wasn't pretty, but the Stars pitchers combined on a 1 hitter this afternoon as Huntsville took game 2 at Regions field in Birmingham. Righthander Ariel Pena earned his 1st win in a Stars uniform. It was a battle for Pena, working 5 plus innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 1 hit, but also walked 7 and struck out 4. This has basically been the story for Pena as he now has given up only 11 hits but has allowed 14 walks in 16 1/3 innings. Pena started the 6th but was lifted after walking the first 2 Baron hitters. Newly promoted Mark Williams was brought in. Williams quickly recorded 2 outs, but then completely lost the strike zone, walking the next 4 hitters he faced, forcing in 3 runs. Williams was able to get out of it on a fly out. La Crosse native R.J. Seidel had another good game, working 2 scoreless innings allowing only a walk. Closer Casey Medlen came on to work a 1-2-3 ninth inning to end the game. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville was able to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, never looked back. The middle of the Stars line up really got the job done. Kentrail Davis went 2-5 with 2 runs scored. Jason Rogers was also 2-5 with a double and triple. Rogers scored once and drove in 2. Brock Kjeldgaard was 1-4 with a walk. He scored twice and also drove in 2, and Robinzon Diaz went 2-5 with 2 RBI's. The downside of the game today was catcher Shawn Zarraga having to leave in the 8th after injuring his lower body after singling to center. Hopefully this is something minor for Shawn. Great to see the Stars play a clean game defensively. No errors tonight. So the Stars struck out 13 times and allowed 12 walks to Baron hitters, and win 8-3. [sarcasm]I'm sure that's how they drew it up.[/sarcasm] Huntsville Play By Play The Stars' 3 run first. All runs scored with 2 outs. Huntsville Top of the 1st Nick Shaw strikes out swinging. Shea Vucinich walks. Kentrail Davis called out on strikes. Jason Rogers triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Trayce Thompson. Shea Vucinich scores. Brock Kjeldgaard walks. Robinzon Diaz singles on a soft line drive to left fielder Jared Mitchell. Jason Rogers scores. Brock Kjeldgaard scores. Robinzon Diaz to 2nd. Fielding error by left fielder Jared Mitchell. Rene Tosoni hit by pitch. Shawn Zarraga flies out to right fielder Keenyn Walker. The 6th inning where Birmingham got back in the game, without a hit. Final: Huntsville 10 Birmingham 5 It took 13 innings, 8 pitchers, and 4 hours and 42 minutes, but the Stars snapped their 4 game losing streak to hand Birmingham their 1st home loss this season. Starter Jimmy Nelson continued his strong season with another exceptional performance tonight. Nelson went 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Nelson left with a 5-0 lead. R.J. Seidel finished the 6th and pitched a scorless 7th, striking out 3 of the 4 batters he faced. Things got shaky in the 8th. 40 man roster pitcher Santo Manzanillo struggled mightly tonight. Manzanillo faced 4 batters in the 8th, allowing a hit while walking 3. He was charged with 3 earned runs. Lefty Brian Garman came on with the bases loaded. After a couple sacrifice flies, the lead was down to 5-3. Greg Holle was called on in the 9th to close the door. Holle walked the lead off hitter to start the 9th. After a stolen base, Barons 2nd baseman Marcus Semien hit a game tying home run. After recording an out on a fly ball, Holle walked another Baron and was then taken out. Left hander Thomas Keeling then came on. While making a pick off attempt, Keeling threw the ball away, and the Barons now had a runner on 3rd with 1 out. Manager Darnell Coles pulled the infield in. The strategy worked as a ground ball to short stop Hector Gomez forced the runner to stay at 3rd. After another walk, Keeling finally got out of the inning on a strike out. The Stars bullpen then threw 4 shutout innings. Keeling worked the 10th. Eric Marzec came on to work the 11th and 12th, allowing a hit while striking out 2. After the Stars scored 5 runs in the top of the 13th, utility man T.J. Mittlestaedt then came on to work the bottom half. Mittlestaedt allowed a hit, but that was it. Huntsville Box Score The Stars jumped out to a 5-0 lead, scoring three in the 4th and two more in the 5th. Then, over the next 7 innings, the Stars could only muster 2 walks. The bats finally woke up again in the 13th as the Stars scored 5 to take the lead and earn the win. Designated Hitter Robinzon Diaz led the Stars offensively tonight with 3 hits, including 2 doubles, driving in a run and also scoring a run. Catcher Adam Weisenburger continued his strong hitting this season. Weisenbuger went 2-4, including a 2 run single in the 13th to give the Stars the lead. He also walked twice and scored twice. Right fielder Kentrail Davis also had 2 hits including a double. Shortstop Nick Shaw was on base twice and drove in 2 as well. BASERUNNING SB: Vucinich (1, 2nd base off Whisler/Gonzalez, M), Tosoni (1, 2nd base off Whisler/Gonzalez, M), Rogers, J (1, 2nd base off Buch/Gonzalez, M). Coming into tonight's game, the Stars, as a team, had only 4 stolen bases. They nearly doubled that with tonight's effort. FIELDING E: Keeling (1, pickoff). Much cleaner defensive game tonight for Huntsville. The lone error could have been costly as it put a runner on 3rd with one out in the 9th, but the Stars were able to work around it and get out of the inning. Final: Tennessee 8 Huntsville 1 Tennessee jumped on the Stars early, putting a 5 spot up in the 1st, and coasting to an 8-1 win Friday night. Arcenio Leon started and took the loss. He lasted just one inning tonight, allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 1 hit batter. Leon did deal with a blister issue in his last start. It's unclear if that affected his start tonight, or if he just had a bad game. A bright spot in the pitching department was the work from Alan Williams. The 23 year old left hander went 4 very strong innings in relief, allowing only 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. Eric Marzec pitched 2 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs while striking out 3. Brian Garman worked an inning, allowing an unearned run. Lefty Thomas Keeling finished with a clean 9th, striking out 1. FIELDING E: Tosoni 2 (2, fielding, fielding), Walker, M (6, fielding), Garman (1, throw). 4 more errors tonight leading to 3 unearned runs. The Stars now have committed 21 errors in 15 games including 7 in the last 2 games. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville out hit Tennessee 10-9 tonight, but were only able to push 1 run across. Robinzon Diaz went 2-3 with a walk and Hector Gomez had 2 hits as well. Jason Rogers drove in the Stars only run with an RBI single in the 7th. Final: Tennessee 5 Huntsville 3 Despite taking a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning, Huntsville lost another close game 5-3 Thursday night at The Joe in 11 innings. Stars starter Andy Moye pitched 5 good innings. The only blemish was a 2 run 3rd. Moye's line was 5 innings, 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 4 walks with 6 strike outs. Moye also uncorked 2 wild pitches. R.J. Seidel followed Moye with 1 clean inning including a strike out. 6'-8" right hander Greg Holle battled through 2 innings tonight. Holle allowed a run on 3 hits and 2 walks. It was in the 11th, Medlen's 3rd inning of work, where the Smokies broke through for 2 runs. Thomas Keeling came on after Medlen walked in the go ahead run and got the final 2 outs. Control has been an issue for the Stars pitching staff. Coming into the game, the Stars led the league in walks allowed with 56 in 108 innings. They were also tied for 2nd in the league with 9 hit batters. Huntsville Box Score After collecting 5 hits in the 2nd, when they scored their 3 runs, the Stars were held to 2 hits the rest of the way. Pitcher Andy Moye recorded the 1st hit by a Stars pitcher this season with a single in the 2nd. FIELDING E: Walker, M (5, fielding), Shaw, N (4, throw), Gomez, H (2, throw). With the 3 errors tonight, the Stars have now committed 17 errors in 14 games. Couple that with the walks and that is a lot of extra baserunners for the Stars opponents. It's still early, but it would be nice to see this tightened up. Huntsville Play By Play Huntsville took the early lead tonight in the 2nd. Final: Tennessee 4 Huntsville 1 One elevated pitch turned out to be too much today as Tennessee took game 3 of the series 4-1. Stars starter Taylor Jungmann was cruising today through 5 2/3 innings. But a couple of walks and a hanging breaking ball that Christian Villanueva didn't miss turned a scoreless pitchers duel into a 3-0 deficit the Stars couldn't overcome. Jungmann, who struggled in his last start, had his game going today. During the broadcast, Alex Cohen mentioned that he was in the 91-92 range into the 6th. Jungmann finished with a line of 3 runs, all earned, on 2 hits, 4 walks, 1 costly home run, and 3 strikeouts. Huntsville Box Score Not a lot to see here. The Stars were limited to 4 singles by Jeff Bianchi, Shea Vucinich, Shawn Zarraga, and Adam Weisenburger. Jason Rogers saw his 8 game hitting streak come to an end. As WV Brew noted earlier in the Link Report, it was mentioned during the broadcast that Rogers has only struck out 3 times now in 52 plate appearances in his 1st go at AA pitching. Well done "Bones"!! Rough day for Zarraga and Stars pitchers with baserunners: BASERUNNING SB: Alcantara 4 (6, 2nd base off Jungmann/Zarraga, 2nd base off Jungmann/Zarraga, 2nd base off Jungmann/Zarraga, 2nd base off Marzec/Zarraga), Ha (5, 2nd base off Garman/Zarraga). Final: Tennessee 4 Huntsville 3 The Stars were unable to over come 3 solo home runs as the fell tonight 4-3 to Tennessee at The Joe. Stars starter Ariel Pena had his longest outing of the season, going 5 innings allowing 3 runs, all on solo home runs, on 4 hits and 2 walks with 4 strike outs. Pena's pitch count tonight was 73 with 42 being strikes. Overall, it was a better outing for Pena than some of his earlier starts this season, but still not what he showed prior to coming over last season in the Grienke trade. Left hander Alan Williams followed Pena on the mound tonight and went 1 inning allowing a hit. 40 man roster pitcher Santo Manzanillo pitched the final 3 innings tonight. Manzanillo allowed 1 earned run on 2 hits, a walk, and a hit batter. Stars broadcaster Alex Cohen noted Manzanillo hit 98 a couple times on the radar gun tonight, so the arm strength continues to return after the shoulder injury. Huntsville Box Score The Stars fell behind 3-0 before Kentrail Davis hit a solo home run of his own. It was Davis's 1st home run of the season. Jason Rogers and Brock Kjeldgaard both had 2 hits tonight for the Stars. Catcher Adam Weisenburger was back in the line up after missing a game plus after being hit by a pitch on Sunday. Weisenburger went 1-2 with a run scored and 2 walks. 3rd baseman Mike Walker and back up catcher Robinzon Diaz had the Stars other 2 hits. Brewer utility infielder Jeff Bianchi started tonights game at 2nd base. He went 0-3 at the plate and was replaced after 6 innings in the field. So far, on his rehabilitation assignment, Bianchi has started at short, 3rd, and now 2nd. Huntsville Play By Play Team RISP: 2-for-12. Team LOB: 8.
