  1. One factor I think they might consider is that Estrada has pitched much more successfully out of the rotation than the pen for his career. I get where you're coming from, I really do, because I too think that Thornburg's future for us is and should be in the rotation, not the bullpen. The problem here is that from a public relations standpoint, this is almost an impossible move to make without something provoking it first. If Estrada is struggling, that's enough to make a move. But if it's June 1st and we're in 1st place and Estrada has a 3.50 ERA and is still healthy and Thornburg is still blowing people away in the pen, how do you do it? Regardless of your bigger picture mindset, if the move backfires at all, you're going to be left with a lot of criticisms and questions as to why you took something that was working well and tinkered with it and it ended up blowing up in your face. I'm not overly concerned as it's extremely unlikely that our starting 5 for the season will all sustain the entire year without some time off needed which is going to force their hand sooner or later.
  2. I agree with pretty much all of this. I don't necessarily think the Braun extension is going to be bad, but I didn't see the need. He would STILL be under control for 2 more years without the extension. If he turns out to be more of a Corey Hart type player without the PED's, his contract is going to hurt from 2016-2018. This isn't like the NFL where you can go light on the guaranteed money and get out of a deal if need be. If you're signing a guy in 2014 for a deal that starts in 2018, you better have a pretty solid idea of who he is going to be then. So many variables to consider. Health, more wear on the treads, and more uncertainty in your 30's. Some guys peak in their late 20's and fall off a cliff in their 30's. You just don't know. I can't see too much of a purpose of seeking to buy out future years that are 4+ years away for an almost-28 year old catcher especially having no idea how he will project as a catcher at 32 and 33. I also don't see much purpose of extending him for those 2 years with the purpose of him playing first. He's very valuable at catcher. Put him at 1st and he's just Mark Reynolds with less K's and less power. Harsh, but true.
  3. Sometime this summer, you'll see some kind of major replay controversy (a blown call that still wasn't overturned, a blown call that wasn't reviewable, the crew neglecting to review a big call late when the manager had already used his challenge, etc), and that will bring this all to the forefront again. Regardless, replay is here to stay. They'll improve on it, they'll build on it, but baseball will forever now have replay. They are doing something to get the call right rather than throwing up their arms and playing the "human error" card, and I'm thrilled about that. I can accept "human error" on balls and strikes, and after seeing Adrian Hernandez call a strike on Lucroy that was about 6 inches inside, that's hard enough for me as it is.
  4. Given that he can't play for another team until 2018, I'm not too worried about this for at least two more years. We're so far off from knowing what the team will look like in 2018, what, if any catching and 1B prospects will develop or come to us via trade.
  5. There were. It was probably only one or two, though. Regardless, I think we're likely to get as much out of Reynolds as we could have gotten out of Davis anyway.
  6. Anyone still interested in trading him for Ike Davis? I'm sure not.
  7. Settle down Jimmy...walking guys with a big lead is the last thing you want.
  8. I would guess he's still just trying to get Henderson comfortable again, but after last night, I think he's there already.
  9. Lyle is still hitting .071, which isn't really surprising, and IMO shouldn't have any role on this team except to PH and an occasional day for Reynolds. Well I don't think he should have a role on this team at ALL, but seeing as he does, I don't think it should be any more extensive than that.
  10. I agree he definitely earned some extra hate with the deceit and lying. I also doubt the 3 PED heroes of these Philly fans would have not done the same thing if they had an opportunity to escape justice by attacking the process.
  11. Philly fans, so classy. Never mind that they have 3 PED users on their team's roster.
  12. This is where I hate that RR doesn't protect his players. Segura has been hit 2 days in a row in very dangerous spots. Intentional or not, I don't like just allowing that without at least sending a message back, which we never will.
  13. He can't be as bad as C.B. Bucknor. Bucknor makes a terrible call and then stands there with that "I just took a dump in my pants" grin on his face. Agreed, Bucknor is bad. But Hernandez is definitely bottom 5 as well. Why do these guys get brought back year after year? Union?
  14. LOL...how do you get an error when the guy just didn't have the range to get there? I'll say that it's not Howard's most shining defensive moment, but it's not an error.
  15. Any chance Roenicke goes with a shocking bunt call here?
  16. I've concluded that MLB must keep Angel Hernandez around for shock value. It can't possibly be because of his skills (lack thereof) as an MLB umpire. He is awful, just awful.
  17. I hate when a 1st/3rd base ump misses a blatant check swing call. No better way than that to tell the entire audience that you simply weren't paying attention.
  18. You have 1st and 3rd with nobody out and a tie score late in the game and 2 batters in a row strike out looking. Awesome!
  19. Gennett is Joe Morgan in his prime at 2nd compared to Overbay being the regular guy at 1st.
  20. Less than 4 full games into the season and this team is already not very much fun to watch.
  21. The two 1st basemen that we kept have a combined WAR the last 3 years of -0.5 and are both in their thirties (and thus almost certainly won't be improving on those negative WARs). I wasn't looking for them to go sign some stud, but this is really the best they could do?
  22. I'm a bit annoyed that they had all off-season to upgrade the 1B position and if anything, they somehow managed to downgrade. It wouldn't bother me so much if they were in a rebuilding state anyway, but you spend all that money to get Garza, and then you do essentially nothing about first base. Seeing that Reynolds is the best option they have, by far, he should be getting the lions share of time at 1st. If the plan is a full platoon, we are in just as bad of a spot as last year. This pains me to say, because I was a big fan of his during his first stint -- but I have no idea why Overbay is on the roster. He isn't going to hit. He can't play effectively anywhere else but 1st. He has no upside at 36. So we are using a roster spot to have an aging marginal defensive first baseman?
  23. Of the decisions the Brewers have to make with the assortment of lefties, Roenicke said, "That's nice to have. And (they are) good ones. I don't want lefties that are not good. They're good." Interesting twist of conventional strategy. Apparently Ron would rather have lefties in his pen that are good, as opposed to having some that are not good. Good thinking, Ron.
  24. 1) Seggy 2) Lukey 3) Brauney 4) Ramey 5) Gomey 6) Markey 7) Chrissy 8) Rickey/Scootey
