  1. Final: DSL Athletics 7, @DSL Brewers 6 (10 innings) DSL Brewers box scoreLeonard Lorenzo allowed five runs in six innings, but the Cerveceritos still held a 6-5 lead until the 9th inning and then lost the game in the 10th. Young lefty Marcos Padilla turned in the best pitching performance, allowing a hit and a walk while fanning two in two scoreless frames. Orlando Arcia and Esthervin Matos continue to perform well, each with two hits, though it looks like both were removed for defensive replacements; given that Matos committed his fifth error in just 12 games, I can't exactly fault the decision. Matos was removed late, but Arcia somewhat earlier, which is worrisome. Dionis Hinojosa was on four out of five trips with three hits and a walk. Matos and Yonki Hernandez each stole two bases and Arcia one, but the baserunning wasn't all roses--Atleticos pitcher (guess which hand he throws with) Anderson Mata put six runners on in his 4.2 innings and, remarkably, picked three of them off. Toss in a caught-stealing at home plate and you have, at best, a mixed bag on the bases. 2. Helena video highlights are starting to be posted on MiLB.com, including Nick Ramirez's double yesterday and Yadiel Rivera's homer from Thursday.
  3. A trio of promising 17-year-old RHPs are MIA lately. Osmel Perez, darling of the 2010 season, didn't pitch between 6/10 and 6/29 and hasn't appeared since then. MH noted with mild alarm when Milton Gomez was pulled after one inning on 6/24, and indeed Gomez hasn't pitched since. Finally, Pedro Peguero made just four short appearances, the last being on 6/17.
  4. Nick Ramirez's walk rate so far for Helena is only a couple thousandths of a percent higher than Yadiel Rivera's. Ramirez is hitting well enough that it doesn't matter, but it's something to keep an eye on as he progresses. In theory it would make sense that even someone with good plate discipline might not walk much when facing pitchers much less talented than him, especially a power hitter, but that doesn't seem to hold true in real life, perhaps because it doesn't take into account that less-talented pitchers are usually much wilder and often throw four balls without ever throwing a hittable strike.
  5. Final: West Michigan 5, @Wisconsin 4 Wisconsin box scoreAnother one that got away. The Whitecaps got three in the 8th off Greg Holle to tie and another in the 9th off Dan Britt for the win. Jimmy Nelson, however, continues to inspire hope: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 6/6 GO/FO, 100 pitches, 61 strikes. As he discussed with Toby, he throws both a four- and two-seam fastball; perhaps lately he's been going to that four-seamer more, since his strikeouts are up and his grounders are down. Pretty evenly distributed offensive attack for the Rattlers, though Nick Shaw was on three of five times with two singles and a walk. Newly converted catcher Joey Paciorek committed his sixth passed ball in just his tenth game with Wisconsin; he had two in four games with Helena.Wisconsin play-by-play West Michigan Top of the 8thPitcher Change: Greg Holle replaces Brian Garman.Ryan Hamme walks. With Nick Castellanos batting, Ryan Hamme steals (1) 2nd base.Nick Castellanos walks.James Robbins singles on a line drive to left fielder T. 8. Final (game one): @DSL Brewers 3, DSL Cardinals 2 (7 innings) DSL Brewers box score18-year-old Venezuelan righty Jorge Ortega pitched well again, posting a 5/0 K/BB in six innings while allowing two runs. Orlando Arcia and Esthervin Matos were each 1-2 with a walk, with Arcia's hit going for two bases; each committed a throwing error in the field, for Matos already his 4th in just 11 games. Elvis Rubio was hitless, unless you count the pitch that hit him. Obviously, because this game was scheduled for just seven innings, the two teams faced each other again in some fashion today, but the suspended game box score has not been updated, and there's an empty box score for a second game. We'll see what happens (happened).DSL Brewers play-by-play Arcia came up big with two outs in the 2nd: DSL Brewers Bottom of the 2ndJuan De Leon pops out to shortstop Leobaldo Pina.Elvis Rubio strikes out swinging. 9. Final: @Jupiter 2, Brevard County 1 Brevard County box scoreTyler Thornburg was good, allowing just a two-out, two-run homer in the 1st inning, but the 'Tees didn't have enough offense to overcome even that; Thornburg fanned six in six innings of work. BC managed just two hits, one each by D'Vontrey Richardson and Josh Prince. Prince also walked and stole his 14th base but also committed two errors. Kentrail Davis swiped his 25th bag. 10. Final: Huntsville 6, @Montgomery 3 Huntsville box scoreNo word on how hard he was throwing tonight, but Wily Peralta continues to do the two things that have put him at the top of our prospect list: strike people out at a good clip while keeping the ball on the ground. His line: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 5 K, 1 HR, 10/2 GO/FO, 101 pitches, 66 strikes. Sean Halton had a huge night, reaching four of five times up, including his sixth homer and his 17th walk. Steffan Wilson joined him with three hits, and Zelous Wheeler, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Hainley Statia each had two--that's Big Brock's first multi-hit game since his first overall game with the Stars, two weeks ago. Erik Komatsu doubled and walked, and Martin Maldonado was also on twice with a hit and a HBP. Rob Wooten picked up the save with two punch-outs in 1.1 innings. 11. Final: @Wisconsin 2, West Michigan 1 Wisconsin wins 2-1 over WhitecapsChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - Wisconsin Timber Rattlers pitcher Maverick Lasker and Adrian Rosario combined to hold the West Michigan Whitecaps to three hits and they got just enough offensive support for a 2-1 win Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers pushed a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit. Wisconsin snapped a five game losing streak with the victory. Lasker hit a bump in the road in the third inning. There was a runner at first with two outs when he walked Hernan Perez. Then, Rob Brantly reached on an error to load the bases. Clay Jones, who hit a grand slam in Wednesday's game, drew a four pitch walk from Lasker to force in the first run of Thursday's game. But, that was it for the Whitecaps (43-46 overall, 11-9 second half). The Rattlers (47-43, 9-11) were getting base runners, but could not dent the plate in the first five innings against Whitecaps starter Kyle Ryan. That changed in the sixth. Reggie Keen started the rally with a one out single. TJ Mittelstaedt, who had three hits in the game, singled to right and sent Keen to third with the tying run. Mike Walker drove in Keen with a single to center and the Rattlers tied the game 1-1. One out later, Cody Hawn stepped up with runners at second and third. The Rattlers first baseman had singled earlier in the game to extend his current hitting streak to 14 games. He added to his hit total with an infield single that sent Mittelstaedt across the pay station for a 2-1 Rattlers lead. Lasker would toss a scoreless seventh inning before turning the game over to Rosario. After the walk to Jones in the third inning, Lasker retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced. It would not be an easy eighth inning for Rosario. He allowed a hit and a walk to the first two batters he faced. A sacrifice bunt moved the tying and lead run into scoring position with two outs. But, Rosario struck out Jones for the second out and got a grounder from James Robbins to end the frame with the Rattlers still up 2-1. The ninth would be a routine 1-2-3 inning for Rosario to nail down the win and for his first save of the season. Wisconsin and West Michigan wrap up their series on Friday night. Jimmy Nelson (4-7, 4.58) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The Whitecaps have Alex Burgos (4-1, 2.15) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 7:05pm. Come out and celebrate the birthday of Timber Rattlers mascot Fang on Friday night. Area mascots will be at the ballpark to participate in a kickball game before the Timber Rattlers game. Since it is also a North Shore Bank Family Night, children 12 and under eat free. After the game, enjoy a fireworks display! After the fireworks, Fazoli's invites children 14 and under to participate in Kids Run the Bases. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show starting at 6:45pm. 15. Final (game one): @Nashville 5, Albuquerque 0 (7 innings) Nashville Blanks Albuquerque In Doubleheader Opener, 5-0Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds blanked the Albuquerque Isotopes, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. It was the second shutout of the season for Nashville. The Sounds shut out the Round Rock Express, 1-0, with a combination shut out on June 16 at Greer Stadium. Mat Gamel, Eric Farris, Brett Carroll, and Caleb Gindl each collected two hits in the victory. Nashville plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 3-0 advantage. Brandon Boggs opened the frame getting hit on the first pitch by Albuquerque starter Joe Newby and advanced to third as Carroll singled to left field. After reliever David Pfeiffer came into the contest, Taylor Green looped an RBI base hit to left field [audio] followed by a Gamel two-run single to left. Nashville score its last two runs in the next inning to extend the lead to 5-0. Gindl and Edwin Maysonet singled to start the frame and both scored when Farris lined two-out, two-run double to left center. Nashville starter Frankie De La Cruz pitched four scoreless innings, allowing two hits while fanning five. Mike McClendon (3-1) struck out one in two scoreless innings for the win. Tim Dillard finished the game with a scoreless frame. In his second start of the season for Albuquerque, Joe Newby (1-3) took the loss after surrendering two runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings. 16. Final: DSL Brewers 6, @DSL Athletics 5 DSL Brewers box scoreHappy Gian Rizzo day! The 17-year-old righty went five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk while fanning four. The runs came on a two-run homer in the 4th. Happy Orlando Arcia day as well; after laying low recently, No G busted out again today with a triple, double, and a walk in five trips. Esthervin Matos, who's impressed in the very early stages of his career, also doubled and walked. Fanning the fragilest and faintest of hot streaks, Elvis Rubio was 1-3 with a walk; next stop, a .200 batting average! Raul Mondesi earned a sombrero de oro, 0-5 with four punch-outs. The Cerveceritos stole six bases without being caught. Arcia committed his 5th error afield. 19. Former Pace star Caleb Gindl on the doorstep of the major leaguesBob Heist/Pensacola News Journal Since being selected in the fifth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, Caleb Gindl sure can tell you about how long the road is to reach Milwaukee. Put it this way, Mapquest and a GPS unit have been necessities for one of the greatest players to ever come out of the storied Pace High program as Gindl chases a spot in the big leagues with the Brewers. With the Panhandle as the starting point, the runner-up for Florida's Mr. Baseball in '07 has covered more than 5,800 miles during his travels through rookie league ball in Helena, Mont., Class A stops in Charleston, W.Va., and Melbourne, one season of Double-A in Huntsville, Ala., and now a home with Triple-A Nashville in Tennessee. The ascent through the organization has actually been quite rapid for the 22-year-old outfielder. But, nonetheless, interesting. "I've always felt like anything is possible ... so everything I've had to do is just part of what it takes," Gindl said. "It's been my dream since I was 5 years old to play Major League Baseball. Do I think it will happen? Absolutely, or I wouldn't be playing the game. "If it's meant to be, it will happen. Hopefully, in the end, I get called up and live the dream I'm chasing." No doubt, though, during this journey, Sunday afternoon's game against the Albuquerque Isotopes at Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M., was one to remember. With a two-out single in the top of the ninth inning during a 9-5 Pacific Coast League win, Gindl completed hitting for the cycle. It was the first time — and third overall in the team's 34-year history — that rare baseball feat had been accomplished by a Sounds player since J.R. House in 2004. The first cycle in club history was by Tike Redman in 2001. "I can't lie, I was excited," said Gindl, who tripled in the second inning, homered in the third and doubled in the eighth. "If you play this game and don't get excited about something like that, well, then there's something wrong. I've been playing baseball a long time and had been close before, but that had never happened. So, yeah, that's a moment I think I'll remember for a long time." What Gindl also may look back on from this summer and remember fondly is his current hot streak that has the Sounds' right fielder looking like a strong candidate for a September call-up by the National League Central Division leaders when major league rosters expand. Being looked at closely in March by the Brewers during his first spring training camp invitation, Gindl has adjusted following a slow start in Triple-A. Over the past 10 games, the stocky 5-foot-9, 205-pounder is batting .364 (16-for-44) with six extra-base hits, including three home runs, and seven RBIs. He's hit safely in 10 of the last 13 games for Nashville. "What's taken a while has been adjusting to Triple-A pitching," Gindl said. "In the lower levels, like Double-A, you just see throwers, guys that can bring the fastball pretty good. Here, though, it's a lot of off-speed stuff that you have to really learn to hit. "You're not just going to see a fastball on a 3-1, 3-2 count. The guys here can throw a change-up, splitter on any count, so that was a big adjustment. But I'm feeling good about everything now." What's interesting about Gindl is to look back on his high school career and see how sitting on the doorstep of the major leagues isn't much of a surprise. Following Pace's 2006 Class 5A state championship season as a junior, Gindl was the News Journal's hitter of the year after batting .453 with seven homers and an area-high 43 RBIs. As a senior in 2007, he was the PNJ pitcher of the year after compiling a 9-1 record and 0.72 ERA. Gindl hit .508 that season with four homers and 25 RBIs. "I'm not surprised by what Caleb's doing," said Pace coach Charlie Warner. "Really, I'll be very surprised if he doesn't make it (to the big leagues). I remember he made a comment to me when he first got to pro ball that some of the older guys told him he needed to slow down a little bit. But that's just the way Caleb is — he's wide-open all the time. That's just the way he approaches everything. "He has the tools to make it. He has the talent to make it. And I'm confident he will make it." http://cmsimg.pensacolanewsjournal.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?Site=DP&Date=20110714&Category=SPORTS&ArtNo=107140318&Ref=AR&MaxW=300&Border=0

Kentrail Davis was on four times with three hits and a HBP and also stole his 24th base. Josh Prince doubled and homered--after his first homer of the year, on April 9th, I wrote: "Prince has now matched his 2010 home run total--and I wouldn't be surprised if they're still matched at year's end."
