  2. Final: DSL Brewers 7, @DSL Cardinals 3 (6.5 innings) DSL Brewers box scoreThis one was called after the top of the 7th. A five-run 4th carried the Cerveceritos to victory. Eliezer Montano picked up the abbreviated complete game win, striking out six and walking two in his six innings. Dionis Hinjosa followed up yesterday's three-hit, four-steal game with two more hits today, including the first homer of his career. Yonki Hernandez and Orlando Arcia, refinding his mojo, also had two hits; one of Arcia's was a double. Esthervin Matos, moved up to third in the order, went 0-3 but was hit by a pitch and stole his third base (and committed his third error). No Elvis Rubio. Guess who provided the hammer blow? If you guessed Khris Davis, you win no points for fortune-telling but several for paying attention. Khris came off the bench to launch a two-out, three-run blast, and also doubled in the first game. Pro. Mote. Him. Other batting lines: D'Vontrey Richardson, 2-5, walk; Scooter Gennett, 2-7; Kentrail Davis, 1-7, double; Hunter Morris, 1-6. Hiram Burgos allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings in the first game, and after a scoreless inning from Evan Anundsen in the second game, 'Tees fans were treated with yet another Rolando Pascual implosion--if his regular order is four runs and one out, Pascual ordered the diet today, still giving up the four but this time retiring two batters. The fact that Anundsen was removed after just one inning, having pitched well, is slightly concerning. RJ Seidel, just back from BC, made the second start and allowed two runs in three innings, but three unearned runs off Darren Byrd provided the big blow. Rob Wooten allowed an earned run for the first time in exactly a month. Logan Schafer spent most of the day on base, 2-3 with a double, two walks, and a HBP in total. Erik Komatsu was 1-5 with a walk, but the one hit was his sixth homer. Zelous Wheeler collected a double in each game. Yonki Hernandez smacked a grand slam in the first game, and wee bairn Esthervin Matos had a very nice day, 3-5 with a single and a HBP. Even wee-er Elvis Rubio, on the heels of his first pro homer two days ago, was 3-7 with a double; hopefully he's finally finding his feet. 20-year-old Dionis Hinojosa may be too old to really catch your eye, but he deserves special mention for going 3-4 in the second game with four stolen bases. 8. Daily Dish: Brewers’ Caleb Gindl Hits For The CycleJ.J. Cooper/Baseball America Caleb Gindl's value as a prospect rests solely on the bat. As a 5-foot-9 outfielder whose more comfortable on the corners than in center field (although he can play center in a pinch), Gindl knows he'll have to hit to make the big leagues. Luckily for him, hitting has never really been a problem for the Brewers' 2007 fifth-round pick. He doesn't really have the power projection to be the prototype corner outfielder, but wherever he's gone, he has gotten on base while pounding plenty of doubles and the occasional home run. And on Sunday, he did a little of everything. Playing for Triple-A Nashville, Gindl went 4-for-5, finishing off a cycle by singling in the ninth inning. He slugged his 12th home run, which puts him on pace to top his career high of 17, set in 2009 for high Class A Brevard County. Gindl's batting line of .281/.353/.474 is right in line with his career numbers of .298/.375/.464 coming into the season. He may not ever be a big league regular, but the fact that he's shown he can handle center field at least adequately gives him a solid chance of being a platoon or fourth outfielder, especially since he's a lefty hitter.

  10. Final: @Quad Cities 6, Wisconsin 5 (11 innings) Bandits beat Rattlers in 11 inningsChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers July 10, 2011 DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits topped the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-5 in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. The Rattlers grabbed the lead twice, but could not hold on either time as they lost their third straight game. The River Bandits (49-37 overall, 9-8 second half) scored in the bottom of the first inning. Quad Cities had runners on first and third with one two outs when Wisconsin starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson walked two consecutive batters. The first walk - to Michael Swinson - loaded the bases. The second walk - to Geoff Klein - forced in a run for a 1-0 lead. The Rattlers (46-41, 8-9) answered in the top of the third inning. Jason Rogers drew a leadoff walk. One out later Cody Hawn extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single to put runners on first and third. Greg Hopkins launched a 1-1 pitch from Boone Whiting over the wall in left for a three-run homer and a 3-1 Rattlers lead. The River Bandits tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Kolten Wong doubled in the run to make it 3-2. Later in the inning, Wong scored on a sacrifice fly by Oscar Tavares to tie the game 3-3. Quad Cities had runners at first and third with no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Edmondson sent a high fly to medium right-center field. Chad Stang made the catch and threw out the go ahead run at the plate. The Rattlers bats came out of hibernation in the eighth inning. After Hopkins hit his home run in the second inning, River Bandits pitchers retired the next 18 Wisconsin batters. Joey Paciorek tripled with one out in the eighth. Mike Brownstein chopped a single over the drawn in infield to send Paciorek home. Nick Shaw singled to right on a hit-and-run and Brownstein made it to third. River Bandits right fielder Oscar Tavares bobbled the ball as he tried to make a throw to third. Then, he flipped the ball casually to the cutoff man. Brownstein took off for home on the lob. Brownstein scored on the play and the Rattlers were up 5-3. But the Rattlers could not hold the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Brian Garman, who was in his third inning of relief, got the first out. Then, a walk and a double put the tying runs in scoring position. Rattlers closer Greg Holle entered the game and got the second out. Then, Jonathan Rodriguez pinch hit for Tavares. He lined a pitch from Holle off the wall in left for a two-run single to even the game 5-5. Quad Cities loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eleventh inning on a leadoff single, a stolen base, a walk, a ground out, and an intentional walk. Klein, who drove in the first run of the game, drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly to left to give the Bandits a 6-5 win. The final game of the series at Modern Woodmen Park is Monday night. Del Howell (1-4, 5.13) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. The River Bandits have Anthony Ferrara (7-4, 3.21) is scheduled to start. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. Wisconsin box scoreJust a torrent of baserunners allowed by Nelson, who somehow kept the damage to three runs: 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 5 K, 4/3 GO/FO, 92 pitches, 53 strikes. It was usually steady Eric Marzec who faltered and allowed the winning run in the 11th. All five of the Rattlers' hits are mentioned above, and besides those and Rogers' walk, they put just two other men on base, a Paciorek free pass and a TJ Mittelstaedt HBP. Wisconsin play-by-play

Doni Arias worked three shutout innings before yielding the winning run in the 10th. Elvis Rubio collected his first professional homer and also drew two walks. Raul Mondesi also walked twice, Esthervin Matos was 1-4 with a double (and was moved up from ninth in the order to fifth), and Orlando Arcia continued his skein by going 0-2 after entering the game in the 8th.DSL Brewers play-by-play The 'Ritos had a good chance to break the tie in the 9th: DSL Brewers Top of the 9thDionis Hinojosa singles on a ground ball to third baseman Aneudis Peralta.Raul Mondesi walks. 14. Final: @Quad Cities 4, Wisconsin 0 Russell, River Bandits silence Rattlers Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had faced Quad Cities River Bandits starting pitcher Zach Russell three times during the 2011 season before taking him on again on Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. In the previous three matchups, the Rattlers had hit five homers, scored 12 runs, and handed Russell two losses in 12-2/3 innings of work. The story was much different on Saturday. Russell pitched seven shutout innings and combined with two other pitchers for a 4-0 win over Wisconsin. Kolten Wong, the #1 pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2011 draft, singled to start the Quad Cities first inning. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error. A sacrifice fly by Oscar Tavares sent Wong home with the first run of the game. The River Bandits (48-37 overall, 8-8 second half) played long ball in the bottom of the second inning. Cody Stanley and Packy Elkins both hit solo homers off Wisconsin starting pitcher Brooks Hall in the frame and Quad Cities went up 3-0. Ronny Gill doubled in a run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 4-0. Wisconsin (46-40, 8-8) loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth inning against Russell. The River Bandits right-hander got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fly ball to keep Wisconsin off the scoreboard. Russell left after seven innings. He struck out six and walked one while allowing just three hits. Russell retired the final eight batters he faced. Iden Nazario and Aidan Lucas each pitched an inning out of the bullpen to hand Wisconsin its sixth shutout of the season. Cody Hawn extended his hitting streak to ten games with a single in the top of the fifth. The other Rattlers hits were also singles. Chad Stang followed Hawn in the fifth with a single. Nick Shaw became the Rattlers first base runner with a single in the top of the fourth after Russell retired the first nine batters he faced in the game. Game two of the series is Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. Jimmy Nelson (4-7, 4.54) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Quad Cities has Boone Whiting (1-1, 1.76) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm. Wisconsin box score Man, what a lame set of games. Hall was not very good: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 2 HR, 2/5 GO/FO, 69 pitches, 40 strikes. Eric Marzec continues to pitch well, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout. 15. Final: Fort Myers 4, @Brevard County 1 Brevard County box scoreNick Bucci turned in a quality start but still allowed plenty of baserunners: 7 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 5 K, 1 HR, 7/5 GO/FO. I have a feeling games like these just reinforce the Brewers' opinion of Bucci as a "bulldog", but I'd prefer he just be good. Hunter Morris cracked his 14th homer, but BC had just three other hits, two of them belonging to Shea Vucinich, who has to have the most ever multi-hit games for a guy batting .236. Scooter Gennett picked up the remaining hit, while Kentrail Davis and Khris Davis each drew a walk, and D'Vontrey Richardson was just a regular ol' 0-3. Orlando Arcia's brother Oswaldo homered for the Miracle.Brevard County play-by-play

Santo Manzanillo made his AA debut, allowing a solo homer in two innings with no walks or strikeouts. Kyle Heckathorn's Huntsville bow didn't go very well: 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 1 HBP, 2 K, 1 HR, 2/4 GO/FO. Not sure why we don't have pitch/strike counts, but whatever, not like it would paint a prettier picture. Jim Henderson followed Heckathorn and let in five more runs, consigning the Stars to the sweep. Cumulative batting lines: Erik Komatsu was 3-5 with two walks, Sean Halton was 3-8, and Lee Haydel 2-7 with a walk. 17. Huntsville's power-hitting prospect Brock Kjeldgaard propelled into baseball by historic homerMark McCarter/Huntsville Times HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- It was Oct. 23, 1993, a date that lives on richly in Canadian history. A 2-2 Mitch Williams pitch, one out in the bottom of the ninth, and Joe Carter hammered it for a three-run homer, only the second walk-off World Series-winning homer in history. It gave the Toronto Blue Jays their second consecutive championship and convinced more than a few Canadian lads to add some baseball spikes to go along with their hockey skates in their sporting goods collection. Guys like a tall, skinny Ontario kid named Brock Kjeldgaard. "What got me hooked on baseball was when the Blue Jays won the World Series in 1992 and 1993," Kjeldgaard said. "I remember watching that with my dad and thinking that was the best thing ever. It was so exciting. "When Joe Carter hit that home run, I think that might have been what got me hooked on baseball." It hasn't worked out badly for Kjeldgaard, a recent arrival with the Huntsville Stars. Kjeldgaard (pronounced kel-guard), 6-foot-5, 235 pounds, is a power-hitting outfielder who, before his promotion from Class A Brevard County on June 28, broke Brevard's franchise home run record of 18, in less than half a season. It's the kind of power where it looks like, as Huntsville manager Mike Guerrero put it, "he's playing pepper with the outfield wall." Guerrero is not a manager given to hype, but what he saw of Kjeldgaard and the potential he's seen here have him all but gushing. "What I'm seeing is there are not too many people that have the strength that guy has when he hits the ball," Guerrero said. "The ball sounds different off his bat. "When everything clicks in all the cylinders, he might be impressive. When you're talking about legit strength, this is legit. I mean raw power. Prince Fielder (power) and above. The kind of power where you go, 'Huh?!?' "He has the tools to develop into a great player. Hopefully things are going to work out for him." His big numbers at Brevard - .268 with 49 RBIs to accompany his homers - have yet to translate at Class AA, considered the toughest leap in baseball. Going into today's doubleheader against Carolina, Kjeldgaard had only three hits in 23 at-bats in nine games for the Stars. He has 10 strikeouts, the bugaboo that bothered him at Brevard and often plagues long, tall power-hitter types. "Lately it's been kind of a little bit of a struggle trying to get back to where I was," Kjeldgaard said, standing outside the Stars' batting cage Friday evening, leaning on bat the same color as a Canadian ale and emblazoned with a maple leaf. Kjeldgaard, 25, may be a power hitter simply because he didn't get the chance to hit - for power or otherwise - for two seasons and "that took away some of the bad habits I had." He was drafted out of high school as a first baseman but instead went to Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. He pitched there, increasing his velocity enough to impress Milwaukee scouts who drafted him as a pitcher in 2005. After two years in Helena described by Kjeldgaard as "mediocre," the Brewers called after the 2007 season. "They told me to show up at spring training ready to swing the bat and play first base," he said. "I was shocked at first. And a little disappointed. I quickly began to realize it was a fresh start. I got excited about it and started working at it." "It looks like," Guerrero said, "it's going to pay off for him." http://media.al.com/sports_impact/photo/9779451-large.jpg (Eric Schultz/Huntsville Times)
  18. Final: @Albuquerque 7, Nashville 1 Sounds Lose Again In Albuquerque, 7-1Nashville Sounds ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Nashville Sounds dropped their second straight game in Albuquerque on Friday evening, falling 7-1 at Isotopes Park. The defeat was the seventh straight road loss for Nashville (39-49), which is just 1-5 in Albuquerque this season. Isotopes starter John Ely (6-5) turned in a quality outing, picking up the win by holding the Sounds to one run on six hits over seven strong innings. The Sounds missed out on an early scoring chance against Ely. With the bases loaded and one out, the right-hander induced an inning-ending 1-2-3 double play from Nashville third baseman Andy Gonzalez to escape the jam unscathed. Albuquerque took a 4-0 lead in the third inning with four two-out runs against Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz. Justin Sellers - who led all hitters with a 3-for-5 night - plated the contest's first run when he ripped an opposite-field, RBI double off the right field wall to plate Dee Gordon, who had preceded him with a two-out single. After Jerry Sands drew a walk, John Lindsey belted a two-run double to deep center to up the home team's lead to 3-0. Trayvon Robinson closed out the four-run rally with an RBI single to left. The Sounds got onto the board in the fourth when Brett Carroll led off with a single, moved to third on Taylor Green's ground-rule double to right, and scored on a Wil Nieves groundout. Nieves finished 0-for-3 on the night to snap his season-best hitting streak at seven games. The Isotopes increased their lead to 7-1 in the fifth. With two on and one out, Sellers worked an outstanding at-bat against De La Cruz, fouling off five two-strike pitches before dumping a bloop single into center. Carroll's throw to the infield ended up in the third-base dugout, allowing Ely to score on the play. Sands followed with a two-run single to right. De La Cruz (3-5) took the loss for the Sounds after giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over four innings of work. Daniel Herrera turned in an outstanding relief outing behind De La Cruz, working three hitless innings with three strikeouts. Albuquerque hurlers combined to retire the final 10 Sounds batters in order to close out the victory. The teams continue the series on Saturday with another 8:05 p.m. CT meeting. Right-hander Mike Fiers (0-0, 0.00) will man the bump for the Sounds to make his first career Triple-A start. Albuquerque will counter with right-hander Tim Sexton (3-1, 5.10). Nashville box scoreGreen had two hits, as did Erick Almonte, and Caleb Gindl was 1-3. Green started at 2B and Eric Farris at SS; Farris committed a throwing error, his fifth in 17 games there. I can't remember when Doug Melvin said he was going to be checking out the Sounds, but I hope he catches de la Cruz on a good day, because I'd like to see FDLC in the bullpen at some point this year, bad outing today notwithstanding.Nashville play-by-play
  19. Final: Kane County 6, @Wisconsin 1 Rattler drop 6-1 decision to Kane CountyChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Kane County Cougars continue to confound the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Kane County beat the Timber Rattlers 6-1 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field to move to 7-4 in the season series between the teams. Greg Billo pitched six shutout innings for Kane County. Cheslor Cuthbert drove in three runs and made a key defensive play early in the game. Kane County (38-46 overall, 10-5 second half) broke the scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth inning off Rattlers starting pitcher Maverick Lasker. Alex Llanos started the inning with a double. He went to second on a grounder and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cuthbert. Jake Kuebler followed with a double. An RBI single by Kevin David was next and the Cougars went up 2-0. After a walk put runners at first and second. Geulin Beltre singled in a run. An error let the next batter reach and the final run of the inning to score. Cuthbert saved at least one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Wisconsin (46-59, 8-7) had runners at first and third with two outs and Greg Hopkins at the plate. Hopkins hit a grounder down the third base line. Cuthbert made a diving stop and his momentum carried him into foul territory. But, he got up and made a strong throw to first for the final out. The Cougars tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth. Lasker allowed a single to the leadoff batter and hit the next batter to put two runners on base. Wisconsin reliever Adrian Rosario replaced Lasker at that point. Rosario’s first pitch went to the backstop for a wild pitch that moved both runners into scoring position. The next pitch to Cuthbert was lined back through the middle for a two-run single and a 6-0 Kane County lead. Kane County starting pitcher Greg Billo worked six shutout innings and allowed three hits. He struck out seven and walked one to put himself in line for his seventh win of the season. Chase Boruff was one out away from concluding the shutout. Wisconsin had TJ Mittelstaedt at second with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Mike Walker cracked a double to right-center to send Mittelstaedt home with the run. But, the Rattlers would get no more and Kane County would take two of the three games played in the series. Wisconsin is 3-6 in nine home games in the second half. But, they hit the road – where they are 5-1 in the second half – on Saturday night. That is when the Timber Rattlers begin a brief three-game road trip to Quad Cities. Brooks Hall (4-1, 3.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. The River Bandits have Zach Russell (4-7, 3.80) as their scheduled starter. Game time at Modern Woodmen Park is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. Wisconsin box scoreLasker's allowed at least four runs in each of his three starts for the Rattlers since being demoted BC. It's been an awful year for him. Rosario, on the other hand, pitched quite well, posting a 5/0 K/BB in three innings. Not much going on on offense. Chad Stang got in on the outfield assist fun, gunning down a runner at home.Wisconsin play-by-play
  20. Final: Fort Myers 5, @Brevard County 4 Brevard County box scoreA three-run 8th inning off of Mark Willinsky provided the losing margin. Austin Ross pitched effectively, albeit with uninspiring peripherals: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 9/6 GO/FO. Hunter Morris was the offensive star with his 13th homer plus a triple and a sac fly. Scooter Gennett and Kentrail Davis also had two hits, with one of Scooter's going for two bases. Khris Davis was on twice with a single and a HBP, D'Vontrey Richardson walked again, and Chris Dennis was 0-4 in his return. Kentrail was caught stealing twice (one technically a pickoff), in start contrast to his previous success rate of 23/26. D'Vo's eighth CS is less surprising, given that he has only five successful thefts on the year.Brevard County play-by-play Ross was removed after two consecutive walks in the 7th, leading to the Miracle's second run: Fort Myers Top of the 7thSteven Liddle flies out to left fielder Khristopher Davis.Jamaal Hawkins walks.Jonathan Goncalves walks.
