  1. Final: Clearwater 5, @Brevard County 1 Brevard County box scoreNick Bucci had a solid game going until a two-run 6th sullied his line: 5.2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 9/4 GO/FO, 103 pitches, 68 strikes. He threw 27 pitches in that 6th inning. Hey, a scoreless, walkless inning from Rolando Pascual, neat. Speaking of, if you've been wondering all this time what (now slightly less-) young Rolando looks like, his MiLB.com profile page has been updated with a picture: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/players/mugshot/ph_503448.jpg Can we nickname him "Uga"? Anyway, Khris Davis went yard for the 13th time and also walked, and Hunter Morris had two hits and his fifth steal. As far as everyone else you're interested in, Kentrail Davis drew a walk (do more of that, Kentrail!) and D'Vontrey Richardson was hit by a pitch (do less of that, oft-injured D'Vo!)Brevard County play-by-play Bucci's two trouble innings: Clearwater Top of the 4thJonathan Singleton reaches on throwing error by third baseman Shea Vucinich.Darin Ruf flies out to left fielder Khristopher Davis.Sebastian Valle pops out to shortstop Juan Sanchez.Jeremy Barnes homers (5) on a fly ball to left field. 3. Final: Huntsville 11, @Chattanooga 1 Huntsville box scoreThe bats provided the Independence Day fireworks, and Michael Fiers provided the perfect night-sky backdrop on which to fully appreciate them, tossing eight innings while allowing just an unearned run. Fiers fanned seven, walked three, and gave up just three hits. The Stars scored four runs in the 3rd and 6th innings but couldn't manage any in the more appropriate 7th; I think we'll find it within ourselves to forgive them. Erik Komatsu snapped out his torpor with two hits, including his fifth homer, and drove in four runs. Logan Schafer and Sean Halton were each on four times, Schafer with a hit and three walks and Halton with the reverse. Matt Cline and Hainley Statia (quietly hitting .272 though with no secondary skills to speak of) added two hits each, and Martin Maldonado continues to find some thunder in his bat, contributing a double today. Lee Haydel got the day off and thus missed the pyrotechnics. 4. Final: Wisconsin 11, @Beloit 8 (11 innings) Wisconsin wins in extra inningsChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BELOIT, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trailed the Beloit Snappers 6-1 early in Monday’s game at Pohlman Field. The team rallied back and took an 8-7 lead on a two-out, two-run homer by Jason Rogers in the top of the ninth only to see the Snappers tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and send the game to extra innings. But, Wisconsin prevailed 11-8 in 11 innings. Roger led the Rattlers 20-hit attack with four hits of his own. The Snappers (45-36 overall, 7-4 second half) struck for four runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Rattlers starting pitcher Brooks Hall gave up a walk to Adam Bryant and a single to Nate Roberts with one out. Michael Gonzales singled to left, but Chad Stang threw Bryant out at the plate for the second out and to keep the game scoreless. However, after a wild pitch moved Roberts and Gonzales into scoring position, Daniel Ortiz doubled down the right field line to knock in both runners. Jairo Perez followed with a home run off the scoreboard in left-center for a 4-0 Beloit lead. The Rattlers (44-37, 6-5) answered with a two out run of their own in the top of the third inning. Reggie Keen doubled with two outs and scored on a single by TJ Mittelstaedt. But, the Perez made the score 6-1 with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the third. Wisconsin chipped away with a single run in the fourth on consecutive doubles by Joey Paciorek and Stang. The Rattlers made the score 6-3 with an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning when an errant throw to second on a potential inning ending force play got away and allowed Mike Walker to score. But, Lance Ray gave the Snappers an insurance run with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth and the Rattlers were down 7-3. Then, the Rattlers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Keen tripled with one out on a ball lost in the sun. He scored on a single by Mittelstaedt. One out later, Walker singled to move Mittelstaedt into scoring position. Rogers singled to drive in Mittelstaedt and move Walker to third. Walker scored moments later on a wild pitch and the score was 7-6. Rogers was up in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and Mittelstaedt at third base. The Rattlers DH slammed a 2-0 pitch to right for his first home run of the season and the Rattlers had their first lead of the game at 8-7. Eric Marzec relieved for the bottom of the ninth inning and walked Wang-Wei Lin to start things for Beloit. After a sacrifice bunt and a hit batsman put runners on first and second, Gonzales sent a high chopper over the head of Greg Hopkins at third base. That base hit scored Lin to tie the game 8-8. It also moved the winning run around to third base. However, Marzec got out of the with a pair of fly outs to shallow right field to send the game to extra innings. The Rattlers started the eleventh inning with Hopkins at the plate. He sent a grounder to short. But, the ball went through the legs of Daniel Santana and Hopkins was aboard on the fourth error of the game on the Snappers. Walker took a walk. Then, Rogers reached on a bunt single as he tried to drop a sacrifice bunt, but the Snappers had miscommunication on their bunt defense and it was too late when someone did field it. That loaded the bases. Paciorek was down 0-2 when he got a pitch on the inside corner. The Rattlers catcher lined it down the left field line for a double to drive in a pair of runs and give Wisconsin a 10-8 lead. Rogers would score on a wild pitch and the Rattlers were up 11-8. Marzec worked a routine 1-2-3 bottom of the eleventh to close out the game and give the Rattlers their first extra inning victory in six tries this season. The final game of the road trip is Tuesday night at Pohlman Field. Jimmy Nelson (3-7, 4.60) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has Manuel Soliman (3-4, 3.88) set to start. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. Wisconsin box scoreWhat a great game. Four hits for Rogers and three each for Keen, Mittelstaedt, Walker, and Paciorek. Paciorek, despite having only a handful of at-bats, has certainly been an interesting guy lately, especially with move to catcher (note two passed balls today), though he's almost 23 now after bouncing around the system since 2007. Weirdly, amidst all the carnage, Nick Shaw went 0-6 atop the order. The only walk the Rattlers drew on the day belonged, appropriately, to Walker--though when you're banging out 20 hits, who needs free passes? Hall's line: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 7/1 GO/FO, 94 pitches, 64 strikes. Altogether Hall, Adrian Rosario, and Marzec fanned 14 Snappers. 5. Final: @Round Rock 9, Nashville 6 Round Rock Sweeps Sounds With Another Walkoff VictoryNashville Sounds ROUND ROCK, Texas - Catcher Mike Napoli smashed a walkoff three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to stake the Round Rock Express to a 9-6 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday evening at The Dell Diamond in the finale of a four-game series. It marked the third straight night that Round Rock scored the game-winning run in its final turn at the plate against Sounds pitching. The Sounds had rallied from a two-run deficit to tie the score in the top of the ninth inning before Napoli's blast, which came off Sounds reliever Sean Green, ended the contest. Nashville (37-46), which was swept in the series, lost all eight of its games in Round Rock this season. The Sounds' current four-game losing skid immediately follows a five-game win streak, the club's best of the season. The red-hot Caleb Gindl, who went 2-for-5 with three RBIs on the night, gave the Sounds a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he drilled his third homer of the series to right-center off Round Rock starter and former Sound Zach Jackson. Eric Farris, who had opened the game with a single, also scored on the two-run blast, Gindl's 11th roundtripper of the year. Farris' single extended the infielder's hit streak to nine games, matching his best effort of the season. Round Rock halved the Nashville lead to 2-1 in the second when Esteban German and Joey Butler ripped back-to-back two-out doubles off Sounds starter Frankie De La Cruz. The Sounds extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth when Erick Almonte (3-for-4) led off with a double to center and later scored on an Andy Gonzalez groundout. The Express knotted the score at 3-3 in the fifth when Butler drew an inning-opening walk from De La Cruz and Robinzon Diaz singled before both baserunners scored on Julio Borbon's two-run triple down the first base line, the outfielder's first of two three-baggers in the contest. Round Rock took its first lead of the evening in the sixth when Chris Davis led off with a single off De La Cruz, moved to third on a German single, and scored the go-ahead run on a Butler groundout to put the Express in front, 4-3. Nashville tied the game at 4-4 in the eighth when Brandon Boggs greeted new Round Rock reliever Pedro Strop with a first-and-third fly ball that caromed off the top of the center field wall for an RBI single that plated Taylor Green. Former Vanderbilt star Matt Kata put the Express back in front in the bottom of the eighth when the infielder smacked a two-out Sean Green offering back up the middle for a two-run, bases-loaded single. The knock staked Round Rock to a 6-4 lead. The Sounds didn't go down without a fight, however, rallying to tie the contest at six-all in the top of the ninth. Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk from Strop and later scored on Gindl's two-out RBI triple to right. Brett Carroll followed with a potential game-ending grounder to third, but German overshot first base with his throw, allowing Gindl to score the tying run. In the home half of the ninth, Borbon drew an inning-opening walk from Green then Omar Quintanilla dropped a sacrifice bunt attempt up the first base line that was mishandled by Gonzalez, the Sounds' first baseman, to allow a pair of Express baserunners to reach with no outs. Napoli followed by launching a 2-2 Green offering to left for the walkoff blast, his third homer in the past two nights against Sounds pitching. Zach Phillips (1-3) earned his first win of the year for Round Rock after striking out the only batter he faced in the top of the ninth. Green (0-4) took his second loss in the past three nights after surrendering the game-ending longball. Carroll went 0-for-5 on the night for Nashville to bring an end to his season-best 10-game hitting streak. The Sounds return to Music City tomorrow to host the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds (AAA-Cardinals) in a brief three-game homestand. Right-hander Josh Butler (4-5, 5.45) will make the start for Nashville in Monday's 7:05 p.m. opener. Memphis will counter with right-hander Adam Ottavino (3-5, 3.97). A special Independence Day fireworks spectacular will light up the sky above Greer Stadium following the game. Nashville box scoreJeez. The Sounds will celebrate Independence Day tomorrow, but it will be freedom from the tyranny not of King George III but the villainous Round Rock Express that they honor with their fireworks. I suspect when they design their flag green will not be one of the colors they choose. Nice peripherals from de la Cruz: 8/2 K/BB in his six innings. Love to see Gindl hot again. Taylor Green was 1-4 with a walk. Carroll's hit streak may have been snapped, but he picked up his umpteenth outfield assist. Nashville play-by-play
  6. Final: Wisconsin 5, @Beloit 4 Wisconsin bites Snappers with late comebackChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BELOIT, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trailed the Beloit Snappers 4-2 heading into the eighth inning Sunday night at Pohlman Field. That didn’t matter. Wisconsin scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth inning to rally for a 5-4 victory over their in-state rivals. The victory was the second straight for the Rattlers and fourth in their last five games. The Timber Rattlers (43-37 overall, 5-5 second half) grabbed an early lead with an RBI single by Cody Hawn in the top of the first inning. But, Beloit (45-35, 7-3) rallied back with two runs in the bottom of the first off Rattlers starting pitcher Maverick Lasker. Nate Roberts drove in the tying run with a triple. An RBI grounder by Michael Gonzales drove in Roberts to give Beloit a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin tied the game in the top of the second. Franklin Romero’s RBI single sent Chad Stang home from third to make the score 2-2. Lasker allowed one hit over the second, third, and fourth inning. But, he walked Jairo Perez, the leadoff batter, in the fifth. A single by Lance Ray put runners on first and second. Perez took off for third on a pickoff throw from Rattlers catcher Tony Pechek after a failed bunt attempt by Tobias Streich. Perez made it to third just ahead of the relay throw from the second base bag. Streich worked Lasker to a 2-2 count after fouling off four two strike pitches. Then, he sent a fly ball to foul territory in right field. Romero made a nice running catch for the out, but his momentum carried him deeper into foul ground. The throw home was wide of the mark as Perez scored. Plus, Ray moved up to second on the throw to the plate. A single by Daniel Santana moved Ray to third. Lasker got the second out on a pop up to short. But, an errant pickoff throw to first caromed off Santana into short right to allow Ray to score a run to make the score 4-2. Wisconsin rallied to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. TJ Mittelstaedt doubled to start the frame. Nick Shaw’s single to left-center was misplayed and Mittelstaedt scored as Shaw took second base. However, Shaw was at third with two outs. Hawn made sure the opportunity was not wasted. The Rattlers first baseman dumped a single into right field to drive in Shaw with the tying run. Romero set up the Rattlers go ahead run in the top of the ninth. He laced a 2-2 pitch down the right field line for a one out triple. Romero scored moments later on a passed ball for a 5-4 lead. Rattlers closer Greg Holle entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his seventeenth save of the season. Game two of the series is an Independence Day matinee at Pohlman Field. Wisconsin has Brooks Hall (4-1, 3.15) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Beloit will send Ryan O’Rourke (2-1, 1.84) to the mound. Game time is 2:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 1:40pm. Wisconsin box scoreThe Battle of Wisconsin is ours! Mittelstaedt cannot be stopped--two more hits and a walk today. Shaw, Hawn, Stang, and Romero also had two hits, and Mike Walker singled and walked. Stang drew just his second free pass. Lasker threw 72 pitches/46 strikes and posted a nice 4/0 K/BB in his four innings. Chris said yesterday that Matt Miller was as good as you could be for throwing 80 pitches in four innings, and I guess the same probably applies to Lasker for 72. Hawn may be the Cheetah, but Greg Hopkins still pinch-ran for him in the 8th. I guess that makes Hopkins the King Cheetah: http://www.african-safari-pictures.com/image-files/king-cheetah.jpg Greg Hopkins takes a lead off first base. (Associated Press)Wisconsin play-by-play
  7. Final: Mississippi 6, @Huntsville 2 Huntsville box score Meek showing. Michael Bowman, who's pitched poorly this year and especially so lately, gave up four runs in 4.1 innings. Logan Schafer and Sean Halton each had two hits, leaving just one for the rest of the Stars (Martin Maldonado's single); Schafer was also hit by a pitch. Lee Haydel took an 0-5 collar, and Erik Komatsu hitless skein continues, 0-19 now. Lucas Luetge did have a nice outing in relief, 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Huntsville play-by-play
  8. Final: @Tampa 5, Brevard County 4 Brevard County box scoreThree runs from Roque Mercedes between the 7th & 8th innings turned a 4-2 lead into a 5-4 loss. It would seem he's brought his Huntsville magic with him to the Space Coast. Kyle Heckathorn pitched well again: 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 6/4 GO/FO. Santo Manzanillo struck out the only two batters he faced. D'Vontrey Richardson stayed hot with three hits, including a double, and is 15 for his last 35, though he hasn't walked since May. He also stole his second base in the last three games, giving him a slightly less ugly 5/7 ratio on the year. Shea Vucinich joined him with three hits, Khris Davis doubled and walked twice, and Kentrail Davis had two hits and two steals (21 now) and was hit by a pitch. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris went hitless, and Shawn Zarraga did not play after leaving yesterday's game with a head injury of some sort.Brevard County play-by-play Both runs and four of the seven hits Heckathorn allowed came in the 1st, and based on that line-drive double play mixed in there he was lucky to give up that few: Tampa Bottom of the 1stAbraham Almonte singles on a line drive to left fielder Khristopher Davis.Walter Ibarra singles on a bunt ground ball to catcher Sean McCraw. They managed only six hits total on the day, including just one from a slacking Orlando Arcia and Esthervin Matos's first career base knock. A new name for the second straight day: 20-year-old catcher Leudi Otano went 0-3 in game two. Joel Dicent went the (six-inning) distance in game one, allowing four runs but posting a nice 6/2 K/BB; a three-run 3rd did him in. Angel "Ace" Ventura was hardly one in game two, allowing six runs and failing to making it out of the third innings. Young lefty Marcos Padilla tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless, no-hit baseball with a strikeout and a walk. DSL Brewers play-by-play (game one)DSL Brewers play-by-play (game two)
  12. No DSL box score yet; that'll have to wait until morning. Quick note about the AZL Crew: Michael Schaub blew us (and the opposing team) away by fanning 11 in five innings in his first outing. Since then, he's pitched nine innings and struck out...two. You figure it out.
  13. Final: @Round Rock 9, Nashville 7 (12 innings) Sounds Lose Another Heartbreaker In TexasNashville Sounds ROUND ROCK, Texas - Doug Deeds belted a walkoff, two-run homer in the bottom of the twelfth to give Round Rock a come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond. The blast, an opposite-field two-run shot to left, came against Sounds reliever Donovan Hand (1-4), who took the loss. The heartbreaking loss was the seventh straight defeat in Round Rock for Nashville (37-45), which fell to 1-7 in extra-inning action this season. It marked the second straight night that the Sounds lost a game in which they held a late lead. Round Rock trailed by three in the ninth and was down to its final strike before rehabbing catcher Mike Napoli lifted a wind-blown three-run homer to left off Daniel Herrera to send the game to extras. Mark Hamburger (3-3) picked up a win for Round Rock for the second night in a row after authoring two hitless innings of relief work. Outfielder Caleb Gindl powered the Nashville offense with a 3-for-4 effort that included a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored. PCL veteran Chad Tracy gave the Express an early advantage when he swatted a two-out, two-run homer to left off Sounds starter Amaury Rivas in the bottom of the first inning. Julio Borbon, who led off the frame by drawing a walk, also scored on the slugger's team-leading 17th longball of the season. Round Rock increased its lead to 3-0 in the second with another two-out run, as Joey Butler scored on a Deeds double. Gindl put the Sounds on the board in the third when he led off the inning by ripping his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to right off Round Rock right-hander Eric Hurley that made it a 3-1 contest. Brett Carroll extended his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games and pulled Nashville back within a run when his fourth-inning single off Hurley brought home Eric Farris, who had opened the frame with a triple to right. Napoli extended the home team's lead to 4-2 with a solo homer in the fifth before the Sounds rallied to bat around and take their first lead of the evening with a four-run sixth. Carroll opened the frame with a walk before Erick Almonte and Taylor Green ripped back-to-back RBI doubles off Hurley to tie the contest at 4-4. After a sacrifice bunt move Green to third, the Sounds' third baseman raced home with the go-ahead run on Gindl's infield single to second, which chased Hurley from the game as Nashville jumped in front 5-4. After Gindl stole second, Sounds catcher Wil Nieves greeted Express reliever Ryan Tucker with an RBI single back up the middle to make it a 6-4 Nashville advantage. Nashville tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Edwin Maysonet led off with a double against Beau Jones and later scored on a double play groundout to up the visitors' lead to 7-4. Mike McClendon was spectacular behind Rivas, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced over three hitless innings. Round Rock took immediate advantage of McClendon's departure in the ninth, rallying to tie the score at 7-7 against Herrera. With two on and two outs, Napoli was down to his final strike when he lifted a wind-blown homer over the wall in left, his second roundtripper of the night and a heartbreaker for Herrera, who suffered his second blown save. The Sounds had a chance to jump back in front in the tenth, loading the bases against Cody Eppley with only one out. However, the Express right-hander induced an inning-ending double play grounder from Nieves to escape the jam unscathed. On the controversial play, Gindl was ruled to have run out of the basepaths and was called out without a tag from second baseman Matt Kata. A pair of defensive gems by the Sounds in the bottom of the tenth kept the game going. With one out, Gindl threw out Esteban German at the plate from the left-center gap as he attempted to score from first on a Butler single. Later in the inning, with two runners aboard, right fielder Brandon Boggs made a diving catch of a sinking Deeds liner to end the inning. After the Sounds went down in order in the top of the eleventh, Hand worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, escaping with a scoreless frame by striking out ex-Sound Brad Nelson. The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Sunday evening. Nashville sends right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-4, 3.80) to the hill to face former Sounds left-hander Zach Jackson (6-2, 5.65). Nashville box scoreRivas did not pitch very well: 5 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 2 HR; however, I do appreciate the strikeouts. Excellent all-around game from Gindl, who also drew a walk. Today was his third three-hit game in the last six, as he comes out of his slump. Green also singled. The triple was Farris's only hit in six trips.Nashville play-by-play Nieves was ejected after his 10th-inning double play; presumably he thought he was safe at first as well as Gindl perhaps being safe at second.
  14. Final: Wisconsin 6, @Cedar Rapids 3 Rattlers get reliefChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers CEDAR RAPIDS, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to rally from an early deficit at Perfect Game Field on Saturday night. Reliever Dan Britt made sure that lead held up and Eric Marzec closed the door in the 6-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. The Kernels (35-44 overall, 3-6 second half) took advantage of a pair of Wisconsin errors in the bottom of the first inning. Chris Giovinazzo reached on an error to start the inning and promptly stole second base. David Harris singled to left-center and Giovinazzo scored for a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Cruz was next and he reached on an error that put him on second and sent Harris to third. An RBI grounder by Ricky Alvarez let Harris score for a 2-0 lead. The Rattlers (42-37, 4-5) got a run back in the top of the second thanks to a Kernels error. Joey Paciorek’s grounder back to the mound was deflected to short. The throw to second to force Jason Rogers for the final out of the inning was dropped and Wisconsin’s inning was extended. Mike Brownstein doubled to left-center and Rogers scored. However, Paciorek was out at the plate to end the frame. Cedar Rapids scored in the bottom of the second to go up 3-1. Wes Hatton was hit by an 0-2 pitch by Matt Miller. A wild pitch moved Hatton to second. Jean Almanzar’s singled got Hatton to third. A single by Giovinazzo scored Hatton for a 3-1 lead. Miller regrouped to strike out the next three batters and kept the Kernels off the board. He also worked through a 1-2-3 third and a scoreless fourth to keep the Rattlers within striking distance. Wisconsin would strike in the top of the fifth. Paciorek and Brownstein singled to start the frame. One out later, TJ Mittelstaedt tripled both runners home to tie the game. Mittelstaedt scored on high chopper to first off the bat of Nick Shaw. The throw to the plate was late and wild. That allowed Shaw to take second base. Greg Hopkins followed with an RBI double and the Rattlers were up 5-3. Britt took over for Miller in the bottom of the fifth inning and gave up singles to the first two batters he faced. Then, he got a double play and a strikeout to end the frame. Britt kept the score at 5-3 for the rest of his outing. The Rattlers reliever left the game with two outs and a runner at second in the bottom of the eighth inning. Marzec came on to get the final out of the eighth. Britt tossed 3-2/3 innings of shutout relief with four strikeouts. Marzec worked a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts to end the game and pick up his third save of the season. Wisconsin continues their road trip on Sunday evening at Beloit with a game against the Snappers. Maverick Lasker (0-1, 3.85) is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Beloit will counter with Adrian Salcedo (5-3, 3.03). Game time at Pohlman Field is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm.Wisconsin box score Nice enough bounce-back start from Miller. Though he only made it through four innings because of his pitch count (80 pitches/51 strikes), he fanned six. Paciorek and Brownstein each had two hits, Mittelstaedt drew a free pass to add to his triple, and Cody Hawn singled and walk. Man, how good has TJ Mittelstaedt been? He's already 23 though, so it's tough to see him as a real prospect yet, and if even Khris Davis can't get promoted, fat chance of seeing what Mittelstaedt can do at Brevard County until 2012. 15. Final: @Huntsville 4, Mississippi 1 Huntsville box scoreWily Peralta was very good, if not dominant, tossing seven shutout innings. He allowed six hits and two walks while fanning four. He posted an 8/4 GO/AO and of his 98 pitches, 60 were strikes. An unearned run off Robert Hinton in the 8th was the Braves' lone tally. Sean Halton had an excellent night, going 3-4 with two doubles, and Logan Schafer was very good as well with two hits, a walk, and his fifth steal. Erik Komatsu took an 0-4 to extend his hitless streak, Martin Maldonado failed to record an extra-base hit, or a hit at all, for the first time this week, and Lee Haydel did not play.Huntsville play-by-play Three of the eight runners Peralta allowed came in the 1st: Mississippi Top of the 1stTyler Pastornicky singles on a ground ball to center fielder Logan Schafer.Cory Harrilchak grounds into double play, second baseman Zelous Wheeler to shortstop Matt Cline to first baseman Sean Halton. 16. Final: @Tampa 8, Brevard County 7 Brevard County box scoreAustin Ross was no great shakes in his second start for the 'Tees, allowing four runs in five innings, but thanks to some hot hitting, that was good for a 7-4 lead entering the 8th. Despite a run there charged to Evan Anundsen, BC still held a two-run lead in the 9th, but Mark Willisky allowed one more than that to score and the game was lost. Ross fanned five, walked two, hit a batter, and surrendered five hits. Santo Manzanillo struck out the side in a perfect 6th inning. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris were each 3-4 with the sticks, with one of Morris's hits going for a double and Gennett also contributing a sac fly. Khris Davis drove in three with two hits, including a double, and a HBP and also stole his 10th base. Kentrail Davis and D'Vontrey Richardson each had one hit. Cleverly noting that manatees are evolved to swim and not walk, BC didn't even a single time. 17. Final: @Cedar Rapids 8, Wisconsin 5 Early lead slips away in Cedar RapidsChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers CEDAR RAPIDS, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got out to a fast start against the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Friday night at Perfect Game Field. But, the Rattlers could not hold the pace. Leads of 4-0 and 5-1 slipped away from Wisconsin and the Kernels would score three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 5-5 tie on the way to an 8-5 win. Wisconsin (41-37 overall, 3-5 second half) grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning. Nick Shaw drew his league leading 52nd walk of the season with one out. Mike Walker drilled a double to left-center and the Rattlers had a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin loaded the bases with one out, but did not score again in the inning. The Rattlers had two out with none on in the top of the second inning. Then, TJ Mittelstaedt doubled. Shaw followed with a bloop single to right the sent Mittelstaedt home. Walker was next and he sent the first pitch of the at bat just over the wall in left for a two-run homer. Walker's thirteenth home run of the season made the score 4-0 in favor of the Rattlers. Cedar Rapids (35-43, 3-5) got a run in the bottom of the second inning on a single by Carlos Lugo. It was the first of three hits on the night for the Kernels catcher. The teams traded runs in the third. A sacrifice fly by Chris Dennis scored Cody Hawn from third base in the top of the inning. The Kernels got a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI grounder by Ricky Alvarez. Rattlers starting pitcher Del Howell retired the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the fourth inning. But, three straight singles, the final one by Chris Giovinazzo, plated a run to make the score 5-3. Howell walked the next batter to load the bases. That ended Howell's day. Adrian Rosario relieved Howell and struck out Jeremy Cruz on three pitches to escape the inning. The Kernels cut into the Rattlers lead with another run in the bottom of the fifth. Ricky Alvarez reached on an infield single to start the inning. It took a two-out triple from Wes Hatton to get Alvarez in to make the score 5-4. Lugo doubled to start the bottom of the sixth inning, but Rosario held him right there as he retired the next three batters to keep the Rattlers up a run. But, the Kernels managed to tie the game in bottom of the seventh against reliever Brian Garman. Alvarez doubled to start the inning and was sacrificed to third base. The Rattlers infield was in and Garman got a grounder to first from Brandon Decker. But, Hawn bobbled the ball and not only did Alvarez score, but Decker also reached first. The next two batters also reached on a single and a walk to load the bases. Stosh Wawrzasek relieved Garman and struck out the next two batters to strand all three runners and kleep the game tied 5-5. But the Kernels took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Cruz was at second with two outs when Justin Bass singled to center on a 3-2 pitch to get Cruz home for a 6-5 lead. The single by Bass was followed by a Decker single that put runners on the corners. Hatton followed that with another triple. This one drove in two and the Kernels had an 8-5 lead. Daniel Tillman entered in the top of the ninth. He gave up a two out single to Hawn, but retired the Rattlers without giving up a run and picked up his fifth save. The final game of the series is Saturday night at Perfect Game Field. Matt Miller (2-4, 4.99) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Max Russell is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Wisconsin box scoreWell, at least some of the hitters had good nights. Walker thumped the ball twice, Hawn had three hits including a double, Mittelstaedt doubled twice, and Shaw was on three times. Howell now owns a 22/28 K/BB in 43.2 innings while repeating A-ball as a 23-year-old. We had high hopes for him after the $260K bonus the Brewers gave to him in 2009, but's not really working out. Rosario struck out three and walked none in 2.1 innings of work. STOSH! posted the same K/BB in 1.2 innings, but the hits undid him. 18. Final: @Round Rock 5, Nashville 3 Sounds Blow Late Lead, Lose 5-3 To ExpressNashville Sounds ROUND ROCK, Tex. - The Round Rock Express scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to top the Nashville Sounds, 5-3, on Friday night at The Dell Diamond in the second game of a four-game set. Sounds starting pitcher Sam Narron pitched seven scoreless frames before getting into trouble in the eighth inning, as Round Rock batted around and scored all five runs. Esteban German reached on a fielding error to begin the rally and moved to second on a Joey Butler single. Matt Kata then cleared the bases with a double down the left field line to bring the Express within one run at 3-2. Narron got Kevin Cash to pop out and was removed from the contest for reliever Sean Green, who issued a walk to Julio Borbon. Round Rock went ahead at 5-3 as Omar Quintanilla tripled home Kata and Borbon, followed by a Mike Napoli RBI double. It was Green's first blown save of the season as the reliever moved to 0-3 with the loss. The Sounds have lost 12 or their last 14 games at The Dell Diamond in Round Rock since the beginning of the 2010 season, including the last six consecutive contests. Eighteen of the Sounds' last 21 games have been decided by three runs or less. The Sounds put their first run on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Mike Rivera worked a two-out walk and moved to third as outfielder Caleb Gindl lined a base hit to center field. First baseman Jordan Brown then singled to right field to plate Rivera. Outfielder Brett Carroll belted a two-out solo homer to right field to give Nashville a 2-0 advantage. It was the second consecutive night that Carroll went yard, and third occurrence this season that the outfielder has hit a homer in consecutive games. Carroll extended the Sounds lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh. In his Sounds debut, third baseman Andy Gonzalez singled to lead off the frame, moved to second on a Brandon Boggs sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored as Carroll singled to right. Narron took a no-decision on the night, surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits with three strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings pitched. After giving up two hits in third inning, the 2011 PCL All-Star retired a stretch of 11 consecutive hitters. Round Rock starter Derek Hankins allowed two hits over 3 1/3 scoreless innings. Mark Hamburger (2-3) took the win with a shutout inning. Pedro Strop converted his fourth save. The Sounds and Express will continue their series with the third game of a four-game set at 6:05 pm CT on Saturday evening. Nashville right-hander Amaury Rivas will take the mound (6-7, 4.18) against Round Rock righty Eric Hurley (1-0, 3.77).Nashville box score The legend of Sean Green lives on. Gindl and Taylor Green were each 1-4, and Eric Farris joined them while adding a walk. Farris still isn't walking much, but his walk rate is quite a bit better than last year's. As MH noted earlier, Green was at 2B and Farris at SS again. Carroll pushed his batting average over .300 and his slugging percentage over .500. Nashville play-by-play
  19. Thornburg dominant for six, fans 10Ashley Marshall/Special to MLB.com Tyler Thornburg sets high standards for himself. Even when he's putting up zeros and piling up strikeouts, he thinks he can do better. The Brewers prospect allowed one hit and matched a season high with 10 strikeouts over six innings Friday, pitching the Class A Advanced Brevard County Manatees to an 8-0 blanking of the Clearwater Threshers. Thornburg (2-0) said he didn't have his best stuff in his second start since being promoted from Class A. Still, he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. "It probably wasn't my best performance of the year, but I was locating my fastball early on and throwing quality curveballs," the 2010 third-round Draft pick said. "My curve bailed me out of a lot of problems and got me a lot of strikeouts. "I did know [about the no-hitter]. I looked up there in the third inning, but I know it wasn't going to be one of those nights. I wasn't feeling great." Thornburg, who ranked second in the Midwest League with seven wins and a 1.57 ERA before his promotion, faced the minimum through three innings but walked one batter in each of his final three frames. The 22-year-old right-hander issued a one-one walk in the first, but Michael Dabbs was caught stealing second. He struck out the side in the second and was perfect in the third before walking Jonathan Singleton with two outs in the fourth. He walked his third batter in the fifth, then retired the final two batters to end the inning. "Definitely, those first couple innings were huge, but we were able to get a run early on. Putting up zeros was big for me," Thornburg said. Jiwan James broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out single to right field in the sixth, and Thornburg walked Singleton again to put two runners on base for the first time all night. But the Texan preserved the shutout by getting Darin Ruf to fly out to end the inning. "I started walking a couple guys in the fifth and sixth inning and I felt like I was trying to rush through them. I was trying to make too many perfect pitches behind in the count," said Thornburg, who will pitch in the All-Star Futures later this month. "I just felt like I was getting by. "I was throwing a lot of fastballs early in counts and [James] jumped on the first one I threw him." Thornburg turned things over in the seventh to Bradley Blanks. He lowered his ERA to 0.82 in two Florida State League starts and improved to 9-0 across two levels. In his FSL debut against Tampa on Sunday, the Charleston Southern product allowed a run on two hits while fanning six over five innings. "I would say that with the middle-of-the-order hitters you have to be a lot more careful and hit your spots," Thornburg said of the two levels. "Other than that, there is not too much difference. I'm happy with how my season is going and I can't complain too much at all." Blanks worked around a hit in the seventh to keep his ERA perfect before Jonathan Pokorny and Rolando Pascual combined for two perfect innings to complete the Manatees' eighth shutout. Hunter Morris and Khristopher Davis each hit his 12th homer and drove in three runs for Brevard County. FSL All-Star Jarred Cosart (6-6) took the loss after yielding two runs on four hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts over seven innings. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2011/07/01/KprsC2Gx.jpg Thornburg is 10-0 in 23 career Minor League appearances. 20. Final: @Huntsville 3, Mississippi 2 Huntsville box scoreDan Merklinger, like Tyler Thornburg, went six innings and pitched well--he allowed one run, Thornburg none--while walking four, but that "4" in the BB column just looks so much better when there's a "10" and not another "4" next to it in the K column. Rob Wooten picked up the save, fanning two over 1.2 innings while allowing just a hit. Lee Haydel and Logan Schafer each had two hits to set the table well for the Stars, and Martin Maldonado cracked yet another double, the fifth straight game in which the formerly light-hitting catcher has an extra-base hit. Sean Halton added a hit and Erik Komatsu a walk; Little Pine saw his average drop to .295 after his fourth consecutive hitless game (though in one he saw limited duty). 21. Final: DSL Cardinals 5, @DSL Brewers 1 (8.5 innings) DSL Brewers box scoreApparently Albert Pujols still knows some people in the DR. This game was tied 1-1 entering the 9th, whereupon the Cardenalitos scored four runs and...the game was called? Hey, that's not fair! The loss snapped the Cerveceritos' perfect 6-0 mark against their rivals, but it gets an asterisk from me. Recently unsuspended 19-year-old RHP Leonard Lorenzo pitched very well in his second start back: 6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR. He did, however saddle Elvis Mora with a one-out, bases-loaded mess in the 7th, which Mora got out of; Mora would go on, however, to give up three of the four 9th-inning runs. Deivi Mejia went 1-3--and that was the only hit the Cerveceritos got. Not ideal. Orlando Arcia did draw a walk. So did 17-year-old 3B Esthervin Matos, signed in March for $100k, who was making his professional debut. He's the fourth-youngest player in the system, after Arcia, Elvis Rubio, and Milton Gomez. 22. Final: Brevard County 8, @Clearwater 0 Manatees deal two-hit shutoutClearwater Threshers CLEARWATER, Fla. - The bats fell silent Friday night against the Brevard County Manatees (32-45) as the Clearwater Threshers (42-36) were shutout 8-0 at Bright House Field. The Threshers managed just two hits on the night. Brevard's Tyler Thornburg (2-0) was stellar in his six innings of work, fanning 10 hitters and allowing just one hit. He was credited with his second win of the season. Bradley Blanks followed with one inning on the mound, allowing one hit. Jon Pokorny and Rolando Pascual combined for two more scoreless innings. The Manatees backed their pitching staff with runs in the fourth and sixth inning. Khris Davis launched a solo home run, his 12th, for the first run, and Hunter Morris lifted a sacrifice fly to score Juan Sanchez. Thornburg had a no-hitter working into the sixth inning that was broken up by a sharp single from Jiwan James. The Threshers did manage to draw four walks against the right-hander, but only had a runner in scoring position once all evening. Brevard then fueled a five-run inning in the eighth coming from a triple to right off the bat of D'Vontrey Richardson and later a deep double to right from Sean McCraw with the bases loaded. Clearwater starter Jarred Cosart (6-6) was the tough-luck loser, allowing just two runs on four hits in seven innings. He issued only one free pass and struck out a pair of Manatees. Brevard County box scoreHow much longer can they keep up the refrain of Thornburg ultimately being a reliever? The dominance is such a breath of fresh air in our stagnant system. Khris Davis also singled and was hit by a pitch to go with his homer. His line is a frustratingly good .325/.420/.550. Maybe they'll promote him once his OPS reaches 1.000. D'Vo had two hits for the third straight night and for the fourth time in his last five games; he also stole his fourth base. Scooter Gennett picked up a hit and drew a free pass, and Kentrail Davis walked twice, once intentionally. Second big bases-loaded hit from McCraw in the last couple days. 23. Baseball America's Ben Badler has a list of the top 40 projected signing bonuses for international players (plus scouting reports for subscribers). He also has a team-by-team breakdown, broken down into five tiers ("High Rollers", "Sleepers", "Opportunity Knocks", "The Price Is Right", and "Bargain Hunters"). The Brewers fall into the second-to-last category, described thusly: "These teams will make moves in Latin America, but don't expect any million-dollar fireworks. Low to mid-six figures is likely the ceiling for these teams, who will be opportunistic and pounce if asking prices for some of the top guys fall." Badler provides the following comment: If/when the Brewers are connected to any specific players, we'll link to it here.
  24. From this week's Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet chat: Shawn Nelson (Chippewa Falls,Wi.): What exactly does Tyler Thornburg have to do to get a little respect from you guys? So far all I've seen is a 'in the photo' from him. Did I miss something or has he just been overlooked? Also, would you say he is now their top prospect? Thanks J.J. Cooper: As mentioned in the Banuelos answer a guy with five innings pitched this week has a tougher time making the list. Thornburg is having a great year, but there still is a lot of thought that with his delivery he'll end up as a reliever. With that being the case [Wily] Peralta and [Cody] Scarpetta are in that mix battling him for No. 1 in the Brewers system (well at least til [Taylor] Jungmann and [Jed] Bradley sign).
