Final: Helena 8, @Ogden 6 Helena box score The Brewers weathered four Ogden runs between the 8th and 9th innings to hang on for the win. 4th-rounder Taylor Williams had a pretty decent start, allowing two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk in five innings while fanning three. His buddy, 3rd-rounder Barrett Astin, continues to struggle, here allowing three runs (albeit all unearned) in 1.2 innings. The former Arkansas starter has yet to have a really clean, let alone dominant, game. Andy Hillis finally allowed an earned run but still picked up the save. Dustin Houle paced the offense with three hits, including a walk. Second baseman Nathan Orf was one of three other Brewers with multiple hits; Orf, an undrafted free agent out of Baylor who's from Montee Ball's hometown of Wentzville, MO, has been a pleasant surprise for Helena, showing a real knack for getting on base. With two hits, a walk, and a HBP today, he pushed his OBP to .483. Omar Garcia was back in the lineup after leaving Thursday's game early and continues to succeed atop the order, reaching base three times today with a single and two walks and swiping his 11th bag. Adam Giacalone was 1-5 to drop his average to a shameful .480. Helena play-by-play I guess the Brewers don't use the contact play with Houle: Helena Top of the 2nd Dustin Houle singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jacob Scavuzzo. With Jalen Harris batting, wild pitch by Zachary Bird, Dustin Houle to 2nd. With Jalen Harris batting, wild pitch by Zachary Bird, Dustin Houle to 3rd. Jalen Harris grounds out, shortstop Dillon Moyer to first baseman Jesus Valdez. Angel Ortega grounds out, second baseman Jesmuel Valentin to first baseman Jesus Valdez. Dionis Hinojosa grounds out to first baseman Jesus Valdez. Here's the story behind Astin's unearned runs; his first inning was three-up, three-down: Ogden Bottom of the 8th Alex Santana grounds out, third baseman Jalen Harris to first baseman Adam Giacalone. Joey Curletta called out on strikes. Dillon Moyer walks. Jesmuel Valentin singles on a line drive to left fielder Charlie Markson. Dillon Moyer to 2nd. Jacob Scavuzzo reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Jalen Harris. Dillon Moyer to 3rd. Jesmuel Valentin to 2nd. Pat Stover walks. Dillon Moyer scores. Jesmuel Valentin to 3rd. Jacob Scavuzzo to 2nd. Justin Chigbogu singles on a line drive to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Jesmuel Valentin scores. Jacob Scavuzzo scores. Pat Stover to 2nd. Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces Barrett Astin. With Jesus Valdez batting, wild pitch by Andy Hillis, Pat Stover to 3rd. Justin Chigbogu to 2nd. Jesus Valdez grounds out, second baseman Nathan Orf to first baseman Adam Giacalone. Hillis stranded the tying runs in scoring position to end the game: Ogden Bottom of the 9th Kyle Farmer grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Adam Giacalone. Alex Santana grounds out, third baseman Jalen Harris to first baseman Adam Giacalone. Joey Curletta singles on a ground ball to left fielder Charlie Markson. Dillon Moyer walks. Joey Curletta to 2nd. Jesmuel Valentin singles on a line drive to center fielder Omar Garcia. Joey Curletta scores. Dillon Moyer to 2nd. With Jacob Scavuzzo batting, wild pitch by Andy Hillis, Dillon Moyer to 3rd. Jesmuel Valentin to 2nd. Jacob Scavuzzo grounds out, third baseman Jalen Harris to first baseman Adam Giacalone.

Final: Helena 13, @Ogden 7 Helena play-by-play This one looks like a blowout, but Ogden actually took a 7-5 lead into the 9th after scoring two in the 8th off Tanner Poppe. Adam Giacalone launched a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game, and things snowballed from there: Helena Top of the 9th Pitching Change: Jacob Rhame replaces Rob Rogers. Angel Ortega grounds out, third baseman Alex Santana to first baseman Justin Chigbogu. Charlie Markson pops out to second baseman Zach Babitt. Michael Ratterree walks. Adam Giacalone homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Michael Ratterree scores. Jalen Harris singles on a line drive to left fielder Jacob Scavuzzo. With Jose Pena batting, wild pitch by Jacob Rhame, Jalen Harris to 2nd. Jose Pena walks. Michael Turay reaches on a fielding error by center fielder Hank Yates. Jalen Harris scores. Jose Pena scores. Michael Turay to 3rd. Pitching Change: Ricky Perez replaces Jacob Rhame. Renaldo Jenkins singles on a line drive to left fielder Jacob Scavuzzo. Michael Turay scores. Ruben Ozuna singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jacob Scavuzzo. Renaldo Jenkins to 3rd. With Angel Ortega batting, Ruben Ozuna steals (3) 2nd base, Renaldo Jenkins scores. Ruben Ozuna to 3rd. Passed ball by catcher Austin Cowen. Angel Ortega singles on a pop up to second baseman Zach Babitt. Ruben Ozuna scores. Charlie Markson walks. Angel Ortega to 2nd. Michael Ratterree doubles (11) on a ground ball to left fielder Jacob Scavuzzo. Angel Ortega scores. Charlie Markson to 3rd. Adam Giacalone walks. Pitching Change: Kyle Hooper replaces Ricky Perez. Jalen Harris called out on strikes. A lot can go wrong before that final out. Helena box score Giacalone, after a night off, continued his assault on the Pioneer League with three hits, including the homer, and a walk. He's hitting .550. Taylor Brennan also homered, his second straight game going deep. Michael Ratterree's three-game homer streak came to an end but he stayed hot, reaching in five of his six plate appearances. Starter Brandon Moore joined Poppe in having a poor game, allowing five runs in three innings. In between the two, though, Eduard Reyes had another nice outing with three scoreless, hitless innings.

Final: Helena 7, @Idaho Falls 6 Helena box score 2011 6th-rounder Danny Keller did not have a very good start, lasting just two innings while allowing three runs and posting an unsightly 0/3 K/BB. Tristan Archer calmed things down with three innings of one-run ball, fanning four and walking none. Michael Ratterree seems to have found his power stroke. He homered for the third straight night, his first three homers of the year. Taylor Brennan also went deep, and Dustin Houle contributed three hits, including a double. Renaldo Jenkins and Angel Ortega had two hits. Omar Garcia did not play after exiting yesterday's game early. Helena play-by-play

So. It's midnight and Helena is down 17-4 in the 7th inning. I'm gonna go ahead and call this one a loss. Starter Anthony Banda got just two outs and allowed six runs (all unearned). But wait! That's not the most runs allowed by a Brewers pitcher in this game! Lefty Trevor Seidenberger, the Brewers' 12th-round pick in June out of TCU, had a pro debut to forget, letting in seven runs while getting just four outs. Chin up, Trevor: it pretty much cannot get worse. Michael Ratterree is so far a double short of the cycle for a second straight night; after not homering until yesteday, he's now done so two games in a row. Helena box score Helena play-by-play

Link Report for Wed. 7/17 -- Helena on MiLB.TV
battlekow replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Final: Helena 9, @Idaho Falls 5 Helena box score So, Adam Giacalone can certainly hit in the Pioneer League. With four more hits tonight, Giacalone is 7-11 since his demotion from Wisconsin. Plenty of other Brewers could hit tonight too, as Helena rapped out 17 in total. Besides Giacalone, Michael Ratterree stands out for falling a double short of the cycle; the home was his first as a pro. Every other starter had at least one hit, so check it out. Zach Quintana had success early only pitching more to contact but was touched up for four runs over the 5th and 6th innings. He finished with just one strikeout but also walked just one while inducing 11 groundouts. You could say he scattered eight hits but he's now allowed 29 of them in his last 17 innings. Helena play-by-play Start your day right with a rich, nutritious six-run inning: Helena Top of the 1st Omar Garcia singles on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. With Charlie Markson batting, wild pitch by Ashton Goudeau, Omar Garcia to 2nd. With Charlie Markson batting, throwing error by Ashton Goudeau on the pickoff attempt, Omar Garcia to 3rd. Charlie Markson walks. With Michael Ratterree batting, wild pitch by Ashton Goudeau, Omar Garcia scores. Charlie Markson to 2nd. Michael Ratterree triples (2) on a line drive to center fielder Dominique Taylor. Charlie Markson scores. Adam Giacalone singles on a line drive to center fielder Dominique Taylor. Michael Ratterree scores. Jose Pena singles on a line drive to center fielder Dominique Taylor. Adam Giacalone to 3rd. Dustin Houle singles on a ground ball to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Adam Giacalone scores. Jose Pena to 2nd. Angel Ortega singles on a ground ball to shortstop Humberto Arteaga. Jose Pena to 3rd. Dustin Houle to 2nd. Jalen Harris grounds into a double play, first baseman Cody Stubbs to catcher Beau Maggi to first baseman Cody Stubbs. Jose Pena out at home. Dustin Houle to 3rd. Angel Ortega to 2nd. Renaldo Jenkins singles on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Dustin Houle scores. Angel Ortega scores. Pitching Change: Josiel Martinez replaces Ashton Goudeau. Omar Garcia grounds into a force out, second baseman Carlos Garcia to shortstop Humberto Arteaga. Renaldo Jenkins out at 2nd. Goudeau entered the game with a 13.21 ERA. It's hard to make your ERA go up when it's already 13.21, but he managed it. On the other hand, he deserves a RTI (run thrown in) for plating Garcia all by himself. -
Final: @Helena 9, Ogden 7 Helena box score Lots of offense today--the teams combined for 25 hits. Excellent games by, among others, Omar Garcia, who was 4-5, and Adam Giacalone, who doubled, singled, and walked twice while driving in four runs. Giacalone hit .317/.394/.425 with Helena last year so we should expect lots of success from him (hopefully with more power this time around). Garcia and Charlie Markson set the table well at the top of the order, reaching base seven times between them and scoring six runs. Honorable mention, literally, to Michael Ratterree for gunning down a run at the plate from right field. Terrible start for Barrett Astin; the third-rounder allowed six runs and eleven baserunners while failing to escape the 4th. In constrast, Astin's partner in crime, Taylor Williams, finally had an excellent game, posting a 6/0 K/BB en route to allowing one run in four innings of work. Helena play-by-play
-
Final: @Helena 6, Ogden 3 Helena box score In a game of threes, Helena took a 3-0 lead into the 6th, Ogden scored three to tie it, and the Brewers secured the final margin of victory with a three-run 8th. Starter Eduard Reyes continues to pitch effectively, here allowing just a hit and two walks in five scoreless frames while fanning eight. This was his best game of the year on a peripherals basis; overall he now owns a 19/8 K/BB in 20.2 innings this year, which is good but not great, and he'll also be 23 in a month. Steady Andy Hillis worked the final two innings and has still not allowed run through seven professional appearances. Another balanced attack from the offense, which means there aren't a lot of individual performances that really jump off the page; Dionis Hinojosa was the only Brewer with a multi-hit game and also had their only extra-base hit, a double. Adam Giacalone, in his first game since being demoted from Wisconsin, was 1-4. Not sure what's going on with Ruben Ozuna, but the former breakout star (at least as far as this forum is concerned) seems to have been marginalized. He pinch-ran for Giacalone today and has just five starts under his belt this year. Jose Pena drew two walks but also struck out twice. Over his last ten games he's become quite the two-true-outcomes hitter, with six free passes and 12 whiffs. If his doubles were going for homers he'd be positively Branyanesque. Joining Pena in boring the defense today was Taylor Brennan, who walked once while fanning thrice. On the season, those two would-be sluggers have punched out 46 times in 141 at-bats. Helena play-by-play Nathan Orf drove in the go-ahead run the hard way: Helena Bottom of the 8th Dionis Hinojosa flies out to right fielder Joey Curletta. Adam Giacalone singles on a ground ball to center fielder Gerson Nunez. Taylor Brennan walks. Adam Giacalone to 2nd. Pitching Change: James Baune replaces Thomas Taylor. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Ruben Ozuna replaces Adam Giacalone. Jesse Weiss grounds out to first baseman Jesus Valdez. Ruben Ozuna to 3rd. Taylor Brennan to 2nd. Jose Pena walks. Nathan Orf hit by pitch. Ruben Ozuna scores. Taylor Brennan to 3rd. Jose Pena to 2nd. Michael Turay singles on a fly ball to center fielder Gerson Nunez. Taylor Brennan scores. Jose Pena scores. Nathan Orf to 3rd. Michael Turay to 2nd on the throw. Renaldo Jenkins flies out to center fielder Gerson Nunez.
-
Final: Ogden 8, @Helena 3 Helena box score Starter Tristan Archer allowed five runs in the first two innings and that was pretty much that. Four of the five were unearned, though he did allow five hits and hit a batter; it's hard to give up that many runs and be completely blameless. One of the three runs David Otterman would allow later was unearned as well. We finally saw Danny Keller again, for the first time since Opening Day, notching two quiet innings. Not that much going on offensively. Taylor Brennan reached base three times, and Renaldo Jenkins was the only Brewer with multiple hits. Jose Pena has four hits in his last 10 games, and they're all doubles. Helena play-by-play

Final: @Helena 9, Idaho Falls 7 Helena box score Four Chukars errors led to seven unearned Brewers runs and made the difference in the game. Not to say that Helena didn't generate some of its own offense--the H-Crew did rack up 10 hits. Two each belonged to Michael Ratterree and Jalen Harris, though every starter contributed by reaching base at least once. On the mound, neither Taylor Williams nor Barrett Astin had good outings. Forget the runs--from big-time college pitchers in the Pioneer League, I at least want to see some solid peripherals. I'm tired of the meh. Andy Hillis took over from Astin after two runs had scored in the 9th to pick up the save and extend his scoreless streak. Garrett Cooper was absent again and has not played since 7/5. Clint Coulter still MIA since 7/2. The slumping Jose Pena was also out of the lineup tonight. Helena play-by-play Four runs without doing anything more impressive than hitting a grounder: Helena Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Josiel Martinez replaces Ashton Goudeau. Nathan Orf hit by pitch. Omar Garcia singles on a ground ball to second baseman Carlos Garcia. Nathan Orf to 2nd. Charlie Markson out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Josiel Martinez to second baseman Carlos Garcia. Nathan Orf to 3rd. Omar Garcia to 2nd. Michael Ratterree reaches on a fielder's choice out, third baseman Hunter Dozier to catcher Frank Schwindel to third baseman Hunter Dozier. Nathan Orf out at home. Omar Garcia to 3rd. Michael Ratterree to 2nd on the throw. Josiel Martinez intentionally walks Taylor Brennan. Dustin Houle reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Hunter Dozier. Omar Garcia scores. Michael Ratterree to 3rd. Taylor Brennan to 2nd. Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Michael Ratterree scores. Taylor Brennan scores. Dustin Houle to 3rd. Angel Ortega walks. Jalen Harris to 2nd. Jesse Weiss walks. Dustin Houle scores. Jalen Harris to 3rd. Angel Ortega to 2nd. Pitching Change: Brent Bonvillain replaces Josiel Martinez. Nathan Orf grounds into a force out, shortstop Humberto Arteaga to second baseman Carlos Garcia. Jesse Weiss out at 2nd.

Final: @Helena 9, Idaho Falls 5 Helena box score The Brewers collected 16 legitimate baserunners (eight hits, seven walks, one HBP), and the Chukars helped them out with three errors as well. Taylor Brennan continues to punish the ball when he gets a hold of it, socking a double and an Earl Weaver special. Seven of Brennan's 12 hits have gone for extra bases. Omar Garcia has quietly gotten hot, going 3-4 with a walk today to raise his average above .300; considering he started the year something like 1-20, that's pretty okay. Garcia also stole two bases, giving him five now, but was picked off as well. If he turns into Carlos Gomez you read it here first. MH highlighted Renaldo Jenkins leaving earlier; his replacement, Nathan Orf was on three times and scored three runs. Joltin' Jesse Weiss gets a start every week or so, three so far, and has a hit in all of them; he was also on base three times tonight. Still no Clint Coulter. Jose Pena took an 0-4 collar (Do you still call it that if they draw a walk? I know the hit total is still collar-shaped but it doesn't seem quite fair) to drop him back onto the interstate. Oh, pitchers. Brandon Moore got hammered for all five Idaho Falls runs while failing to escape the 2nd inning. Eduard Reyes, who I am now officially Talking About, came in and calmed things down considerably with 4.1 shutout and almost entirely clean innings. Helena play-by-play I didn't highlight Michael Ratterree above, but as a general rule if you club a two-out, bases-loaded triple, you get a gold star: Helena Bottom of the 2nd Jalen Harris strikes out swinging. Jesse Weiss lines out to third baseman Hunter Dozier. Angel Ortega walks. Nathan Orf singles on a ground ball to first baseman Cody Stubbs. Angel Ortega to 2nd. Omar Garcia reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Carlos Garcia. Angel Ortega to 3rd. Nathan Orf to 2nd. Michael Ratterree triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Angel Ortega scores. Nathan Orf scores. Omar Garcia scores. Taylor Brennan doubles (3) on a line drive to right fielder Elier Hernandez. Michael Ratterree scores. Jose Pena walks. Dustin Houle flies out to left fielder Dominique Taylor.

Final: Helena 9, @Great Falls 6 (10 innings) Helena box score Great Falls scored two in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game at six, but Helena roared back with three in the 10th to take the power back. The Brewers had only seven hits but walked eight times and were hit by a pitch against just six strikeouts. Michael Ratterree lead the offense with two doubles, and Angel Ortega reached base three times via a single and two free passes. Charlie Markson had no hits but also drew two walks, which gives him five in the last two days after entering the weekend with only two. Everyone else in the lineup contributed, reaching base one way or another. Garrett Cooper did not play for the second straight day. David Otterman pitched poorly in a three-inning start and has yet to strike out more batters than he walked in any of his four appearances this season. Tristan Archer was pretty good in relief of Otterman, allowing a solo homer in three innings but only one other hit while posting a 3/0 K/BB. Helena play-by-play So, uh, what happened here? Great Falls Bottom of the 9th Dillon Haupt grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Jalen Harris. Michael Carballo walks. Adam Engel walks. Michael Carballo to 2nd. Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces Juan Santiago. Jairo Kelly singles on a fly ball to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Michael Carballo to 3rd. Adam Engel to 2nd. Danny Hayes grounds into a force out, second baseman Renaldo Jenkins to shortstop Angel Ortega. Michael Carballo scores. Adam Engel scores. Jairo Kelly out at 2nd. Danny Hayes to 1st. Zach Voight strikes out swinging. How does a runner from second score on a forceout without an error being charged? Not a great game for Andy Hillis, who also walked the first two batters of the 10th before being bailed out by Ryan Fasano, but he keeps his perfect pro ERA despite picking up a blown save. The winning rally: Helena Top of the 10th Charlie Markson flies out to right fielder Jacob Morris. Michael Ratterree doubles (8) on a fly ball to center fielder Adam Engel. Jose Pena walks. Taylor Brennan doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Michael Carballo. Michael Ratterree scores. Jose Pena to 3rd. Dustin Houle strikes out swinging. Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to right fielder Jacob Morris. Jose Pena scores. Taylor Brennan scores. Angel Ortega walks. Jalen Harris to 2nd. Renaldo Jenkins grounds into a force out, shortstop Jairo Kelly to second baseman Justin Jirschele. Angel Ortega out at 2nd.
-
Final: @Great Falls 6, Helena 5 Helena play-by-play So close! The Brewers scored three in the 9th inning but came up just short: Helena Top of the 9th Michael Turay walks. Angel Ortega called out on strikes. With Dionis Hinojosa batting, wild pitch by Eric Jaffe, Michael Turay to 2nd. Dionis Hinojosa walks. With Ruben Ozuna batting, wild pitch by Eric Jaffe, Michael Turay to 3rd. Dionis Hinojosa to 2nd. Ruben Ozuna walks. Omar Garcia strikes out swinging. Charlie Markson walks. Michael Turay scores. Dionis Hinojosa to 3rd. Ruben Ozuna to 2nd. Nathan Orf singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Eric Jaffe. Dionis Hinojosa scores. Ruben Ozuna to 3rd. Charlie Markson to 2nd. Taylor Brennan walks. Ruben Ozuna scores. Charlie Markson to 3rd. Nathan Orf to 2nd. Pitching Change: Anthony Santiago replaces Eric Jaffe. Jalen Harris flies out to center fielder Adam Engel. Helena box score Charlie Markson continues to hit--he was 1-2 with a double to boost his average to .349--but found a new way to get on base today by drawing three walks, which is one more than he had all season. Dionis Hinojosa had a similar game, singling and also drawing three walks, while Omar Garcia contributed two singles and drew a free pass of his own. After a couple pretty nice outings, young lefty Anthony Banda struggled this time out, allowing four runs (albeit just one earned) in four innings while issuing five walks. In total, five of the six runs Helena allowed were unearned, courtesy of four Brewers errors (two by Nathan Orf). With Clint Coulter still out and Dustin Houle needing a rest, Michael Turay caught his first game of the season; he split time between there and third base with Helena last year.
-
Final: @Great Falls 7, Helena 1 Helena box score Not much fun today. Zach Quintana got shelled again, allowing six runs on 11 hits and two walks in six innings while striking out just one. All of the the 2012 third-round pick's ratios so far this year are pretty terrible. Nathan Orf doubled twice, and Omar Garcia and Jalen Harris also had two hits, while Garrett Cooper picked up another double. Helena play-by-play The line score will show that Quintana was doing okay until being tagged for four runs in the 6th, but he was playing with fire the previous inning as well: Great Falls Bottom of the 5th Jacob Morris singles on a fly ball to center fielder Omar Garcia. Adam Engel doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Charlie Markson. Jacob Morris to 3rd. Tyler Shryock singles on a fly ball to center fielder Omar Garcia. Jacob Morris scores. Adam Engel to 3rd. Danny Hayes lines into a double play, shortstop Angel Ortega to third baseman Jalen Harris. Adam Engel doubled off 3rd. Zach Voight flies out to left fielder Charlie Markson. Great Falls Bottom of the 6th Zach Fisher pops out to shortstop Angel Ortega. Corey Thompson singles on a ground ball to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Justin Jirschele doubles (2) on a line drive to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Corey Thompson to 3rd. Christian Stringer walks. Jacob Morris hits a grand slam (1) to left field. Corey Thompson scores. Justin Jirschele scores. Christian Stringer scores. Adam Engel grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Garrett Cooper. Tyler Shryock grounds out, second baseman Nathan Orf to first baseman Garrett Cooper.
-
Final: Helena 6, @Great Falls 3 Helena box score The Brewers spotted the Voyagers three runs in the 1st but came back, scoring three in the 9th to win the game. It was Barrett Astin's and Taylor Williams's turn again today, and Williams fared much better than Astin. Astin went three innings and was responsible for Great Falls' big 1st, while Williams notched four scoreless. Garrett Cooper homered and doubled, Jose Pena doubled yet again, and Angel Ortega was on three times with two singles and a walk. Helena play-by-play
-
Final: @Helena 8, Great Falls 3 Helena box score The Brewers got revenge for yesterday by limiting Great Falls to three runs despite allowing 17 baserunners (12 hits, five walks). Brandon Moore turned in a pretty nice quasi-start (it's hard to really know how to qualify pitching roles in the low minors; anyway, Moore started the game), going 3.2 shutout frames. Eduard Reyes followed and, after beginning his stateside career with a couple effective five-inning appearances, was quite ineffective, letting in three runs while getting just four outs. Andy Hillis picked up the win and preserved his 0.00 career ERA. At the plate, Helena got a ton of production from the 1-4 slots. Charlie Markson stayed hot in the leadoff spot with two hits, including a double, followed by Michael Ratterree, who also doubled along with drawing two walks. Garrett Cooper rediscovered his power stroke by also collecting a double, as well as a single, and Jose Pena doubled twice to send his ISO soaring to near .300 (.277). Jesse Weiss also doubled. TLDR: There were a lot of doubles. Clint Coulter did not play after taking a foul ball off his mask in yesterday's game and leaving early. Hope he doesn't have a concussion. Helena play-by-play Reyes allowed six straight Voyagers to reach before being lifted: Great Falls Top of the 5th Tyler Shryock walks. Danny Hayes doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Charlie Markson. Tyler Shryock out at home on the throw, center fielder Charlie Markson to shortstop Angel Ortega to catcher Dustin Houle. Great Falls Top of the 6th Zach Voight singles on a fly ball to center fielder Charlie Markson. Tyler Williams singles on a ground ball to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Zach Voight to 2nd. Jacob Morris walks. Zach Voight to 3rd. Tyler Williams to 2nd. Dillon Haupt singles on a line drive to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Zach Voight scores. Tyler Williams to 3rd. Jacob Morris to 2nd. Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces Eduard Reyes. I always find these kind of heroic-effort anti-rallies amusing: Helena Bottom of the 6th Jose Pena doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Justin Jirschele. Taylor Brennan strikes out swinging. Dustin Houle strikes out swinging. Jesse Weiss strikes out swinging.
-
Final: Great Falls 2, @Helena 0 Helena box score The H-Crew was shut out for the second straight night, but that's not the weird part. The weird part is that they one-hit Great Falls while racking up ten themselves and still somehow lost 2-0. They walked three, hit a batter, and committed three errors, so there are some other baserunners in there, but still... David Otterman allowed both runs and all three walks in a four-inning start while fanning two. After him, Tristan Archer, Tanner Poppe, and Juan Santiago tossed five almost-perfect frames, marred only by a hit batter by Santiago. Poppe, recently promoted after just two games in the AZL, was making his Pioneer League debut. Charlie Markson was rewarded for his hot start with his first appearance in the leadoff spot and responded with three hits; he's comin' for ya, Counsell. Michael Turay and Renaldo Jenkins each added two hits. Jose Pena was on twice with a walk and a HBP but his 0-2 drops his batting average to .209; he has six hits this year, and only one of them is a single (two doubles, three homers), so...sick ISO at least! Clint Coulter was replaced at catcher after just one plate appearance; see below for whatever insight the PBP reveals. Helena play-by-play Helena Bottom of the 1st Charlie Markson grounds out, second baseman Christian Stringer to first baseman Corey Thompson. Clint Coulter reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Tyler Shryock. Taylor Brennan grounds into a force out, shortstop Tyler Shryock to second baseman Christian Stringer. Clint Coulter out at 2nd. Taylor Brennan to 1st. Jose Pena grounds into a force out, shortstop Tyler Shryock to second baseman Christian Stringer. Taylor Brennan out at 2nd. Not sure if Coulter got shook up at second base there, but he caught the top of the 2nd before exiting to begin the 3rd. The log is full of missed opportunities if you care to read it, including Dustin Houle striking out with Jenkins on third and Markson on second to end the game.

Final: @Missoula 5, Helena 0 Helena box score The final score belies a fine start from lefty Anthony Banda, his second quality outing in a row with the peripherals to match. Tonight he went seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while fanning six and posting a 7/2 GO/FO. Estevenson Encarnacion let in three unearned runs in the 8th to blow open what had been a close game. Tough game for the hitters. The Brewers struck out only twice but managed just three hits, for an execrable (and unlucky) .115 BABIP. They didn't do themselves any favors by drawing no walks, though. Hot-hitting Michael Ratterree was moved up to second in the order and went 1-3. Tough game for Angel Ortega, who was back atop the order but went 0-4 with two throwing errors. Clint Coulter had the day off. Helena play-by-play Wow, Ortega's errors came on consecutive plays in the 8th: Missoula Bottom of the 8th Pitching Change: Estevenson Encarnacion replaces Anthony Banda. Colin Bray walks. Justin Bianco grounds out to first baseman Garrett Cooper. Colin Bray to 2nd. Daniel Palka flies out to left fielder Jose Pena. Jake Mayers reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Angel Ortega. Colin Bray to 3rd. Wagner Mateo singles on a line drive to right fielder Dionis Hinojosa. Colin Bray scores. Wagner Mateo to 2nd. Jake Mayers advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by shortstop Angel Ortega. Joe Munoz singles on a line drive to left fielder Jose Pena. Jake Mayers scores. Wagner Mateo scores. Joe Munoz to 2nd on the throw. Jose Queliz grounds out, second baseman Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Garrett Cooper.

Final: @Missoula 7, Helena 4 Helena box score Down 6-1 after three innings, Helena tried to mount a big comeback for the second straight night, pulling to within striking distance at 6-4 in the 7th, but that was as close as they could get. Zach Quintana had another disappointing start as he was tagged for six runs and 13 baserunners in five innings. Kind of surprised he made it past the 3rd, honestly. 9th-round LHP Tyler Linehan out of Fresno State made his pro debut with 1.2 scoreless innings. Omar Garcia was back in the leadoff spot and promptly responded with an 0-4. Angel Ortega didn't mind being dropped to 9th, picking up two more hits. Dustin Houle also had two hits, including a double; Houle was behind the dish, with Clint Coulter DHing. Garrett Cooper walked once but struck out in his other three plate appearances. Helena play-by-play I'd be interested to know how many pitches Quintana threw. Seems like Tony Diggs was determined to leave him in there to take his lumps--after allowing the six runs and throwing four innings, Quintana was allowed to work himself into and then out of trouble while completing the 5th: Missoula Bottom of the 5th Jake Mayers grounds out, second baseman Nathan Orf to first baseman Garrett Cooper. Daniel Palka walks. Jake Miller flies out to left fielder Charlie Markson. With Justin Bianco batting, wild pitch by Zach Quintana, Daniel Palka to 2nd. Justin Bianco walks. Denver Chavez pops out to third baseman Jalen Harris. Down two, Helena had two on with two out in the 8th but Ortega couldn't cash in: Helena Top of the 8th Dustin Houle grounds out, shortstop Jake Miller to first baseman Daniel Palka. Charlie Markson strikes out swinging. Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to shortstop Jake Miller. With Nathan Orf batting, Jalen Harris steals (1) 2nd base. Nathan Orf walks. Angel Ortega strikes out swinging.

Final: Helena 8, @Missoula 4 Helena box score Down 4-0 after seven innings? No problem. Helena scored eight runs over the final two frames to shock Missoula. The H-Crew racked up 11 hits, seven walks, and were twice hit by a pitch. The offense was distributed pretty evenly, with each hitter that got a plate appearance reaching at least once, except Taylor Brennan. Angel Ortega, Garrett Cooper, and Michael Ratterree were each on three times, and Charlie Markson and Nathan Orf deserve special notice for each reaching twice despite not entering the game until the 8th inning. Piggyback tandem Barrett Astin and Taylor Williams, the Brewers' 3rd- and 4th-round picks this year, handled the first six innings (three each), with mixed results. Between them they struck out nine Osprey, but Williams walked four and they each allowed two runs. Nice job by Chris Razo and Andy Hillis to shut down Missoula's offense over the last three innings, facilitating the comeback win.
