Final: Helena 3, @Billings 0 Helena box score Very quiet game. Helena scored three runs in the 2nd inning, and that was that. Eduard Reyes, Brandon Moore, and Sean Albury combined to shut out Billings, allowing just five hits and a walk; Reyes in particular was outstanding, going five innings with a 5/0 K/BB. The Brewers themselves had only six hits. The 1-2 hitters, Angel Ortega and Clint Coulter, each had a hit and a walk, with Coulter's hit being a double. Omar Garcia also had a hit and is 5-12 since being dropped to the bottom of the order. Starting for Billings was former million-dollar bonus baby LHP/forward Amir Garrett, making his second appearance this year. Helena play-by-play Helena Top of the 2nd Jose Pena grounds out, pitcher Amir Garrett to first baseman Carlos Sanchez. Taylor Brennan lines out to pitcher Amir Garrett. Michael Ratterree doubles (3) on a fly ball to left fielder Gabriel Rosa. Jalen Harris singles on a ground ball to shortstop Ty Washington. Michael Ratterree to 3rd. Final: Helena 8, @Billings 5 Helena box score Starter David Otterman put Helena in the hole by allowing four runs in the 3rd inning, but the Brewers outscored the Mustangs 8-1 the rest of the way. Nice job by the pen, including 27th-round lefty Tyler Alexander making his pro debut with a perfect inning of work. Michael Ratterree had the big game with three hits, including a double. Clint Coulter, in the 2 slot both in the lineup and in the field, also reached three times (double, single, HBP). Garrett Cooper singled and walked. Helena play-by-play Five-run 6th to take the lead and then some: Helena Top of the 6th Taylor Brennan walks. Michael Ratterree singles on a line drive to right fielder Jonathan Reynoso. Taylor Brennan to 2nd. Omar Garcia out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Carlos Sanchez to second baseman Ty Washington. Taylor Brennan to 3rd. Michael Ratterree to 2nd. Juan Santiago, who piqued our interest in his first game stateside, was wild in the 9th but got it done: Billings Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Juan Santiago replaces Tristan Archer. Ty Washington singles on a line drive to center fielder Omar Garcia. With Gabriel Rosa batting, wild pitch by Juan Santiago, Ty Washington to 2nd. Gabriel Rosa flies out to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Phil Ervin walks. With Jonathan Reynoso batting, wild pitch by Juan Santiago, Ty Washington to 3rd. Phil Ervin to 2nd. Final (11 innings): Helena 7, @Billings 3 Jalen Harris choked immediately after the game was resumed: Helena Top of the 9th Jose Pena doubles (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Nick Benedetto. Dustin Houle singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Taylor Terrasas. Jose Pena to 3rd. With Charlie Markson batting, wild pitch by Joe Mantoni, Dustin Houle to 2nd. Charlie Markson strikes out swinging. Pitching Change: Abel De Los Santos replaces Joe Mantoni. Jalen Harris strikes out swinging. Omar Garcia grounds out, pitcher Abel De Los Santos to first baseman Jhimmy Lopez. ...but TOTALLY REDEEMED HIMSELF in the 11th: Helena Top of the 11th Taylor Brennan walks. Jose Pena grounds into a force out, first baseman Jhimmy Lopez to shortstop Humberto Valor. Taylor Brennan out at 2nd. Jose Pena to 1st. Dustin Houle walks. Jose Pena to 2nd. Dustin Houle scores. Charlie Markson scores. Omar Garcia hit by pitch. Pitching Change: Joey Housey replaces MO Wiley. With Angel Ortega batting, Omar Garcia steals (1) 2nd base. Angel Ortega flies into a sacrifice double play, center fielder Phil Ervin to catcher Julio Morillo to second baseman Avain Rachal to third baseman Taylor Terrasas to first baseman Jhimmy Lopez to right fielder Jonathan Reynoso. Jalen Harris scores. Omar Garcia out at 3rd on the throw. All the more impressive given that MO was clearly on Billings' side! Nice game also by Ryan Fasano, who stepped in and tossed three scoreless innings today, striking out two and walking none. -
Delayed after 8 innings: Helena 3, @Billings 3 Helena box score No idea if this game will be resumed tonight or suspended, but I need to go to bed. Big game so far for Jose Pena, who has a homer--already his third--and a double. Nice game also for Dustin Houle, who's reached three times with two singles and a HBP. After four games atop the order produced one hit by Omar Garcia, he was dropped to 8th last night and responded with two; he's hitting 9th today and has another one. Garrett Cooper and Taylor Brennan are each 0-3 with a walk; Cooper's five-game hit streak is on the line. Despite allowing three runs in six innings, very nice start for Anthony Banda, who allowed just four hits while walking none and fanning five; he also posted an 8/3 GO/FO. Helena play-by-play The H-Crew is poised to take the lead in the top of the 9th! Helena Top of the 9th Jose Pena doubles (2) on a fly ball to left fielder Nick Benedetto. Dustin Houle singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Taylor Terrasas. Jose Pena to 3rd. With Charlie Markson batting, wild pitch by Joe Mantoni, Dustin Houle to 2nd. Charlie Markson strikes out swinging.

Final: @Helena 6, Great Falls 5 The box score stopped updating in the top of the 7th with the game knotted at 4--can whoever reads this first after it's completed post some notes? When I tuned in it was the top of the 9th with one on and two outs and the H-Crew up by two. Andy Hillis immediately proceeded to give up a single and two walks to force in a run before snapping off a curveball for strike three and the final out of the game, leaving the bases loaded.

Final: @Helena 7, Great Falls 6 Helena box score Walkoff! As TheCrew07 pointed out, Taylor Brennan went deep twice tonight, his second and third of the year. He had just one homer in 141 plate appearances in the AZL last year, but per Steve Wendt (via And That) Brennan's got some thunder in his lumber. Stop me if you've heard this before, but Garrett Cooper also had a nice game, 2-3 with a walk. Michael Ratterree and 36th-rounder Jesse Weiss, making his pro debut, also had two hits. Well, Weiss made half of his debut, anyway; he was drafted as a first baseman but DHed tonight. Also debuting and reaching twice (single, walk) was undrafted free agent Nathan Orf, who's listed as an outfielder but started at second base. Clint Coulter started behind the plate and doubled once in four trips. Ruben Ozuna made his first appearance of the year, hitting 9th and going 0-4 while somehow committing two errors in left field. Jose Pena and Dustin Houle did not play. I'm going to guess that Voyagers catcher Trey Wimmer does not have a great throwing arm--the Brewers doubled their season total with four steals and were not caught. The first of two *arretts the Brewers drafted from an SEC school this year, third-round RHP Barrett Astin was on the bump for the first time as a pro. Astin got the start and lasted two innings. He allowed three hits and a walk but no runs, while striking out two and inducing three groundouts. Following Astin in the game just as he did in the draft was fourth-round RHP Taylor Williams, also making his debut. Williams didn't fare as well as Astin, allowing two runs and seven baserunners in 2.2 innings. I'd love to get a scouting report on Astin and/or Williams from someone who listened to the game if Steve provided one. The Mad Bahamian, Sean Albury, nearly blew the game by allowing Great Falls to score three runs (albeit unearned ones) and take a 6-5 lead in the top of the 8th; it was his control that was mad tonight, as he walked and hit a batter each and unleashed two wild pitches, along with allowing a hit. Helena play-by-play Clutch two-out work to tie and win the game: Helena Bottom of the 8th Garrett Cooper singles on a ground ball to right fielder Arby Fields. Taylor Brennan grounds into a force out, second baseman Justin Jirschele to shortstop Tyler Shryock. Garrett Cooper out at 2nd. Taylor Brennan to 1st. With Clint Coulter batting, Taylor Brennan steals (1) 2nd base. Clint Coulter pops out to second baseman Justin Jirschele. Nathan Orf singles on a line drive to right fielder Arby Fields. Taylor Brennan scores. Jesse Weiss strikes out swinging. Helena Bottom of the 9th Ruben Ozuna strikes out swinging. Omar Garcia called out on strikes. Renaldo Jenkins singles on a ground ball to right fielder Arby Fields. With Michael Ratterree batting, Renaldo Jenkins steals (2) 2nd base. Michael Ratterree singles on a fly ball to right fielder Arby Fields. Renaldo Jenkins scores.

Ramirez has actually already walked more this year than he did all of last year and is even approaching respectability in that department: 2011: 11 BB / 256 PA 2012: 26 BB / 414 PA 2013: 28 BB / 300 PA Who knows why--could be be improved pitch recognition or just timidity or passiveness--but it's interesting.

Final: Billings 4, @Helena 2 Late Rally Not Enough For Helena By Zac Vierra / Helena Brewers The Helena Brewers tried to rally late, but could not climb out of a 4-0 hole as Billings picked up a sweep of the two game weekend series at Kindrick Legion Field defeating Helena, 4-2 on Sunday. The Brewers trailed for the duration of the contest and their bats were limited to four hits until the final inning. With one out in the ninth and Helena trailing by four, Garrett Cooper hit a single to extend his hitting streak to four games. With Cooper on first, Jose Pena hit a deep drive to center for his second homer of the season. With the score now 4-2, Billings would bring Abel De Los Santos out of the pen to try and close it out. The right-hander did his job retiring Dustin Houle on a strikeout and Clint Coulter on a fly ball to center, handing Helena its third loss of the season. "You are going to have days like that where you have pitching that beats your hitting but the biggest thing we took out of this [game] was that we continued to compete. Even through the ninth inning we scored two runs and Pena came up with a big two run home run, we just fell short," said Helena manager Tony Diggs. The Mustangs got on the board first in the second inning. With one out Daniel Paula hit a double to right and after a fly out, Ty Washington crushed a double over the head of centerfielder Charlie Markson allowing Paula to score. On the next pitch, Nick Benedetto lined a single up the middle, which hit the second base bag. This misdirection off the base allowed Washington to easily score Billings' second run of the game. That would be the day for Helena starter Brandon Moore who allowed two runs off four hits in his professional debut. "I think [Moore] tried to do a little too much. He tried to show the other team a little too many pitches instead just going right after them but he settled in and did a better job toward the end," said Diggs. "It was good to get him out there and get a start underneath his belt to get him going." Billings would add to the lead in the third off Eduard Reyes. With runners on first and second with no outs, Philip Ervin hit a grounder back to Reyes who threw to the shortstop Angel Ortega to get an out at second, but Ortega's throw to first bounced in and got away from the first baseman Cooper. This allowed Jon Matthews to score giving Billings a 3-0 lead on the error. The Mustangs would add a run in the top of the fourth when Paula hit a fly ball to deep center that just cleared the fence for a solo homer. Paula would finish the afternoon a triple shy of the cycle. Reyes would settle down to pitch five innings in relief allowing just the two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out three and walked a pair. "[Reyes] made a couple mistakes and they scored a couple runs off of him but other than that he did a really good job," said Diggs. "Reyes has started before so he understands the dynamics of that part of the game and he threw well." Great Falls will come to town for a two game set at Kindrick Legion Field beginning on Monday night at 7:05. Helena box score Ortega had two hits, the only Brewer to reach base more than once. Houle was behind the plate (and picked a runner off second) with Coulter DHing; Houle collected the Brewers' only extra-base hit of the day, a double, and Coulter singled once in four trips. Taylor Brennan did not play, which contributed to the lineup's 1/9 BB/K; Brennan has a 5/3 mark in that category so far this season, just one walk shy of the total for the entire rest of the team...against 26 strikeouts. Cooper and Pena, despite their hot starts, own no walks between them and have fanned six and five times, respectively. Helena play-by-play

Final: Billings 9, @Helena 2 Helena box score Danny Keller turned in a nice start in Helena's home opener, tossing five innings of one-run ball. He allowed just four hits while putting up a 3/0 K/BB and a 9/1 GO/FO. Unfortunately, David Otterman and three Brewers errors conspired to allow four unearned runs over the next two frames, digging the H-Crew a hole they couldn't escape. Following Otterman and each making his first professional appearance were righties Andy Hillis (11th round) and Tristan Archer (21st round). Garrett Cooper continued his fusillade on the Pioneer League, homering for the third time in three games and also reaching base via HBP. Clint Coulter, in his first game with Helena and back from the DL, started at catcher had two hits, including a double; for those of you wondering how playing time would shake out between Coulter and Dustin Houle, Houle did not play. Also doubling, in his pro debut, was 10th-round OF Michael Ratterree. Ratterree also threw out a runner at the plate. Helena play-by-play The 6th was quite bad defensively: Billings Top of the 6th Pitching Change: David Otterman replaces Daniel Keller. Avain Rachal reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Renaldo Jenkins. With Phillip Ervin batting, wild pitch by David Otterman, Avain Rachal to 2nd. Phillip Ervin flies out to center fielder Omar Garcia. Jonathan Reynoso reaches on a fielder's choice out, shortstop Angel Ortega to third baseman Taylor Brennan. Avain Rachal out at 3rd. With Adam Matthews batting, Jonathan Reynoso steals (2) 2nd base. With Adam Matthews batting, Jonathan Reynoso steals (3) 3rd base, Jonathan Reynoso scores. Throwing error by catcher Clint Coulter. Adam Matthews walks. Humberto Valor grounds out, pitcher David Otterman to first baseman Garrett Cooper. The next inning should have been a 1-2-3 affair but went pear-shaped after another defensive miscue: Billings Top of the 7th Taylor Terrasas grounds out, second baseman Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Garrett Cooper. Jhimmy Lopez grounds out, shortstop Angel Ortega to first baseman Garrett Cooper. Jose Ortiz reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Taylor Brennan. Ty Washington singles on a ground ball to center fielder Omar Garcia. Jose Ortiz to 2nd. Avain Rachal walks. Jose Ortiz to 3rd. Ty Washington to 2nd. Phillip Ervin singles on a ground ball to right fielder Michael Ratterree. Jose Ortiz scores. Ty Washington scores. Avain Rachal to 2nd. With Jonathan Reynoso batting, Avain Rachal steals (2) 3rd base. Jonathan Reynoso singles on a ground ball to catcher Clint Coulter. Avain Rachal scores. Phillip Ervin to 2nd. Pitching Change: Andy Hillis replaces David Otterman. Adam Matthews called out on strikes.

Link Report for Fri. 6/21 - Wins, we have some wins!
battlekow replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Final: Helena 8, @Missoula 6 Helena box score A big six-run 3rd inning carried the H-Crew to victory. Garrett Cooper followed up his two-homer debut with three hits, including a double. Jose Pena went deep for the first time this year; he had three in 21 games with Helena last year. Pena also picked up an outfield kill, gunning down a run at the plate from left field. Omar Garcia collected his first professional hit, a single. Dustin Houle and Jalen Harris, the latter making his first appearance with Helena, each singled but struck out three times. Starter Anthony Banda, drafted in the 10th round last year out of junior college, fared poorly, allowing five runs and nine baserunners in three innings, though he did strike out four--quite similar to his aggregate results last year at Maryvale, actually. Banda was succeeded by a couple of right-handed pitchers from [Midwestern state] State University making their professional debuts, Chris Razo (24th round, Illinois State) and Harvey Martin (undrafted free agent, Minnesota State); each contributed two fairly nondescript but nevertheless shutout innings. Finishing things up was 22-year-old lefty Juan Santiago, making the two-level jump to Helena after three years in the DSL. Santiago allowed a solo home run but nothing else and struck out three to pick up the two-inning save. I don't really know anything about Santiago, but he put up some nice rates last year while pitching mostly as a starter; given that and the promotion he could be a marginally interesting relief prospect. The Ospreys followed up their six-error performance yesterday with three more today--catcher Stryker Trahan and shortstop Joe Munoz each have three apiece already--and starter Blayne Weller also hit three Brewers. Get it together, guys. Helena play-by-play The big inning, with Garcia committing an Eric Young: Helena Top of the 3rd Omar Garcia grounds out, shortstop Joe Munoz to first baseman Jacob Mayers. Angel Ortega reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Joe Munoz. Garrett Cooper doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Yorman Garcia. Angel Ortega scores. Jose Pena homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Garrett Cooper scores. Dustin Houle called out on strikes. Taylor Brennan walks. Charlie Markson hit by pitch. Taylor Brennan to 2nd. Jalen Harris singles on a line drive to center fielder Colin Bray. Taylor Brennan scores. Charlie Markson to 3rd. Jalen Harris to 2nd on the throw. Renaldo Jenkins strikes out swinging. Charlie Markson scores. Jalen Harris scores. Renaldo Jenkins advances to 1st, on a throwing error by catcher Stryker Trahan. With Omar Garcia batting, wild pitch by Blayne Weller, Renaldo Jenkins to 2nd. Omar Garcia lines out to right fielder Yorman Garcia. With Missoula down three in the 7th, Pena helped short-circuit what could have been a rally: Missoula Bottom of the 7th Joe Munoz singles on a line drive to center fielder Omar Garcia. Jake Miller grounds into a double play, third baseman Taylor Brennan to second baseman Renaldo Jenkins to first baseman Garrett Cooper. Joe Munoz out at 2nd. Antonio Alvarez walks. Chuck Taylor doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Jose Pena. Antonio Alvarez out at home on the throw, left fielder Jose Pena to shortstop Angel Ortega to catcher Dustin Houle. -
Final: @Missoula 8, Helena 7 Helena box score Hey! I didn't get a chance to listen to Steve, a situation that will remain fairly consistent throughout the season, so please do chime in with any tidbits he passed along. So anyway, yeah, Garrett Cooper had an okay pro debut. The first baseman, taken in the 6th round out of Auburn, did his best Hunter Morris impression by homering twice, including on his first professional swing. 3B Taylor Brennan (nee Smith-Brennan) also went deep; he homered just once in 34 games last year in the AZL. OF Jose Pena picked up where he left off in his breakout 2012, collecting three hits in five trips and swiping a bag. The pride of Whitefish Bay, 38th-round OF Charlie Markson, repped the Blue Dukes well with two hits in his pro debut. Besides Cooper and Markson, the only other position player making his pro debut was 7th-round OF Omar Garcia, who started in center and took an 0-5 collar. Moundward, RHP Zach Quintana, the Brewers' third-round selection last year, got off to an uneven debut. He allowed five runs over his first two innings but rebounded to shut out the Osprey over the next two; he finished with a quality 7/2 K/BB in his four innings of work, decanting two wild pitches along the way. Righty reliever Sean Albury, dubbed the "Mad Bahamian" as one of the fun stories to come out of the 2011 draft, finally made it back into game action after shoulder surgery kept him out all of last year, striking out two in a perfect inning. Former Indians farmhand Estevenson Encarnacion made his Brewers debut with two shutout frames. On the other side of the box score, the immortally named Jose Jose picked up the save for Missoula; no word on whether he's any relation to former Badger cager Duany Duany. Helena play-by-play Cooper went oppo for both of his jacks. Missoula committed six errors--that is not a misprint. That said, after eight batters they'd already committed three errors, so really they got a lot better! Helena Top of the 2nd Taylor Brennan walks. With Charlie Markson batting, throwing error by Felipe Perez on the pickoff attempt, Taylor Brennan to 3rd. Charlie Markson strikes out swinging. Taylor Brennan scores. Charlie Markson advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by catcher Stryker Trahan. Dionis Hinojosa reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Joe Munoz. Renaldo Jenkins out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Jacob Mayers to first baseman Daniel Palka. Charlie Markson to 3rd. Dionis Hinojosa to 2nd. Omar Garcia grounds out, pitcher Felipe Perez to first baseman Daniel Palka. Angel Ortega grounds out, second baseman Antonio Alvarez to first baseman Daniel Palka.

I can take Helena, though I can't promise I'll be able to keep it.

2013 Draft Pick Discussion, Rounds 6-20

That's key. He generally hit better last year, including his walk rate rebounding, but his K-rate skyrocketed as well. Davis also didn't play any CF last year; I'd like to see him get some time there, because if he can cover it at least decently, he'd be an interesting enough fourth outfielder, not allergic to walks and with some gap power. A poor man's Nori Aoki? If he can't play center at all, I doubt that at 25 he's going to begin carving himself a career as a corner outfielder, but I guess you never know.

Done after five very strong innings and only 64 pitches. As with Thornburg the other night, he was lifted for a pinch hitter with none on and two outs in the 6th--and Huntsville ahead 5-1: Huntsville Top of the 6th Mike Walker singles on a sharp ground ball to center fielder Joc Pederson. With Adam Weisenburger batting, Mike Walker caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Dashenko Ricardo to shortstop Miguel Rojas. Adam Weisenburger grounds out, shortstop Miguel Rojas to first baseman J. T. Wise. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Robinzon Diaz replaces Taylor Jungmann. Robinzon Diaz pops out to second baseman Rafael Ynoa. -

On Jose Pena, from the Transactions thread: It's a little interesting that the Brewers promoted Reed over Pena. Pena outhit Reed by a lot Helena (albeit in less than half as many games); it could be related to defense if they prefer Reed in center over Tyrone Taylor, but that just shifts the argument to Taylor vs. Pena. Reed and Pena are the same age, with Taylor a year younger. You could say Reed's offensive approach is more advanced given their walk rates, but Reed is the one who struck out 28% of the time last year. Ultimately I guess it just comes down to "they like Reed more", exhibits A & B of which are his cameos at Brevard County and Huntsville last year. -

Couple nice outfield sleepers in McMahan and Stang, though a year in Space Coast may put them into a coma rather than waking them up.
