  3. Final: Nashville 5, @Memphis 1Narron, Sounds Shut Down Redbirds, 5-1 Nashville Sounds MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Sam Narron held the Redbirds to one run over eight innings as the Nashville Sounds topped the Memphis Redbirds 5-1 on Saturday evening at AutoZone Park in the fourth game of a five-game series. Nashville (48-41) won its third straight game after posting 10 hits for the third consecutive contest. Lorenzo Cain extended his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-4 performance while catcher Ben Johnson also added three hits in the Nashville victory. Throwing a quality start for the fifth time in his six starts this season for Nashville, Narron (4-3) scattered 10 hits while walking none and striking out five in eight innings pitched to earn the win. The Sounds took an early 2-0 lead in the opening frame as leadoff hitter Adam Stern doubled to center field to begin the contest, with outfielder Cain singling in the next at-bat to reach base. During the Erick Almonte at-bat, Stern scored from third as Memphis catcher Matt Pagnozzi overthrew second base on the Cain swipe. Almonte then smacked a line drive single to center to drive Cain home from second for the second run of the inning. The Redbirds got on the board in the bottom of the third as Aaron Luna tripled to center to begin the inning. The next batter David Kopp singled home Luna to reduce the Nashville lead to 2-1. Sounds shortstop Luis Cruz continued to stay hot for the Sounds in the Nashville seventh, as the PCL All-Star jacked a one-out double to left field and moved to third on a Pagnozzi passed ball. After Johnny Raburn walked, Memphis reliever Renyal Pinto came into the game to replace David Kopp and surrendered an RBI base knock to Johnson. With two outs, Pinto walked Narron to load the bases, and then walked Cain to bring home another run for a 4-1 advantage. Nashville tacked on another run in the top of the ninth inning for a 5-1 lead. Johnson doubled to right field for his third hit of the game, and later scored on a Cain two-out RBI double. Brandon Kintzler finished the game with a perfect ninth while striking out one. Kopp (4-3) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. The Sounds and Redbirds will play the afternoon finale of a five-game series at 1:35 pm CT at AutoZone Park on Sunday before beginning the three-day Triple-A All-Star Break. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren (7-4, 4.94) will start for Nashville against Memphis righty P.J. Walters (2-2, 3.21). Nashville Sounds box score Cain is hungry. I would imagine Kintzler's belly is rumbling a bit, as well. Mat Gamel didn't start but pinch hit and struck out. Nashville Sounds play-by-play After reaching base all five times up yesterday in his first action as a new father, Stern reached in his first three plate appearances today as well.

  7. Final (game two): Nashville 6, @Memphis 5Sounds complete doubleheader sweep of Redbirds Nashville Sounds MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds completed a sweep of a doubleheader against the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds with a come-from-behind 6-5 victory on Friday evening at AutoZone Park. Nashville (47-41) moved to 4-6 in twinbill action with the sweep tonight, the club's first doubleheader sweep this season. Sounds starter Tim Dillard got off to a rough start as the Redbirds plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The bases were quickly loaded after the first three hitters reached base by two walks and one hit batter. Memphis' first run came on a wild pitch by Dillard, while Ray Olmedo's throwing error allowed the next two runs to score. Catcher Matt Pagnozzi capped the scoring rally with an infield groundout to second base that brought home Mark Shorey for a 4-0 lead. The Sounds scored three runs to come within one in the top of the third inning at 4-3. Catcher Anderson De La Rosa began the scoring rally with a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on a Norris Hopper line drive single to right field. Extending his hitting streak to five games, Lorenzo Cain singled home De La Rosa for the first run. Later in the inning with outs, Joe Koshansky knocked a line drive two-run single to center field that scored Hopper and Cain to make it 4-3. The Redbirds got one run back in the next frame as Kevin Howard hit a one-out double to center followed by Aaron Luna going to first after being hit by Dillard. Pagnozzi then singled to right field to bring home Howard for a 5-3 advantage. Nashville came within one run again in the next inning. Olmedo singled to lead off the frame, moved to third on a base hit by Dillard, and then scored on a Hopper sacrifice fly that made it 5-4. The Sounds scored two runs in the Nashville sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Pinch-hitting for Dillard, Adam Stern entered the game and belted a game-tying solo homer over the left field wall off Josh Kinney. The long ball was Stern's second on the year and Nashville's third pinch-hit homer. Hopper recorded an infield single in the next at-bat, stole second base, advanced to third on a Memphis throwing error, and then scored the go-ahead run thanks to an RBI single by third baseman Mat Gamel. Earning the win in his second spot start this season, Dillard (2-4) surrendered five runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks with one strikeout in five innings pitched. Mitch Stetter provided a shutout inning in relief, walking one and striking out on in the sixth. Chris Smith shut the door in the seventh, picking up his PCL-leading 18th save. Memphis starter Oneli Perez allowed four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Kinney (2-4) was charged with the loss after giving up two runs (one earned). The Sounds and Redbirds will continue their series at 6:05 pm CT on Saturday night in the fourth game of a five-game set at AutoZone Park in Memphis. Left-hander Sam Narron (3-3, 3.19) takes the mound for Nashville against Memphis right-hander David Kopp (0-3, 8.36). Nashville box score A perfect day, literally, for Stern, who was 3-3 with a walk in the opener. Cain finished 2-3 with a walk and his 24th steal of the year, and Gamel was 1-2 with two walks. Nashville play-by-play Gamel & Brendan Katin teamed up for a big baserunner kill: Memphis Bottom 3rd Allen Craig grounds out, second baseman Ray Olmedo to first baseman Joe Koshansky. Kevin Howard doubles (9) on a fly ball to center fielder Lorenzo Cain. Mark Shorey flies out to left fielder Norris Hopper. Aaron Luna hit by pitch. Matt Pagnozzi singles on a line drive to right fielder Brendan Katin. Kevin Howard scores. Aaron Luna out at home on the throw, right fielder Brendan Katin to third baseman Mat Gamel to catcher Anderson De La Rosa.
  8. Both of Lawrie's hits came off righties. I'll take it.
  9. Technically, there are no slot values beyond the 5th round, merely a recommended maximum bonus for all further picks. The average signing bonus for 11th rounders may well be $60-70K.
  10. Final (game one): Nashville 6, @Memphis 4 Sounds take first game of doubleheader, 6-4 Nashville Sounds MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds beat the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds, 6-4, on Friday evening at AutoZone Park in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. Nashville (46-41) racked up ten hits in the seven-inning contest, as Adam Stern went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Ben Johnson added two hits and two RBIs. The Sounds scored in the opening to take an early 1-0 lead after the first three Nashville hitters reached base to load the bases. Stern led off the contest with a double followed by a Lorenzo Cain bunt single and Mat Gamel walk. Brendan Katin then grounded into a 5-4-3 double play that allowed Stern to score for the first run of the game. Johnson added to the Nashville lead in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run double. After shortstop Luis Cruz and second baseman Johnny Raburn singled earlier in the frame, the Nashville catcher smoked a two-run double to center field to plate both runners to give the Sounds a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with two outs, Cain hit an inning-ending grounder to Donovan Solano, but the shortstop made a throwing error to first base and allowed Johnson to score from second for a 4-0 advantage. The Sounds picked up another run in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. After Katin was hit by a Lance Lynn pitch to reach base, the outfielder advanced to third base on a Joe Koshansky single and then came home as Cruz grounded into a another double play. The Redbirds got to Sounds starter Marty McLeary in the bottom of the next frame as Memphis trimmed the lead to 5-4. After McLeary hit the first two batters and walked the next, Ruben Gotay crushed a grand slam over the right field wall. It was Gotay's eighth homer of the season. The Sounds scored an insurance run in the next frame to make it 6-4. Johnson led off with an infield single to reach base, moved to second on Ray Olmedo's PCL-leading 12th sacrifice bunt, and then came home on a Stern RBI base knock. McLeary allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 1 /3 innings. Reliever Mike McClendon (4-2) earned the win after contributing 2 2/3 shutout innings while fanning three. Lynn (6-7) picked up the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts in four innings pitched. Nashville box score Haha, "PCL-leading 12th sacrifice bunt". Hey, take pride in your craft, I guess. Cain finished 2-4, while Gamel was 0-3 apart from the walk. Nashville play-by-play
  11. Final: @Brevard County 7, Dunedin 6 (12 innings)Brevard County box score Someone should be broadcasting this stuff! R.J. Seidel started and pitched well, allowing a run on four hits in three innings while striking out five and walking only one. Trey Watten followed and let in three runs in two innings. Mike Ramlow worked the next three frames, allowing Dunedin two runs to tie the game in the 8th. After that, it was the Corey Frerichs show: your hero worked four perfect innings, fanning five, to keep the Manatees in the game and pick up the win. Erik Komatsu and Sean Halton were both 3-6, and Josh Prince was 1-4 with two walks. Komatsu's now hitting a cool .311/.391/.439. If he can actually play center field, he could be pretty interesting. Scott Krieger continues to put up amusing lines, today going 1-4 with a triple and three strikeouts (plus a walk). Brevard County play-by-play The winning rally doesn't look sexy, but it got the job done: Brevard County Bottom 12th Sean Halton grounds out, second baseman Justin McClanahan to first baseman Michael McDade. Sergio Miranda singles on a ground ball to shortstop Tyler Pastornicky. Brock Kjeldgaard strikes out swinging. Sergio Miranda steals (8) 2nd base. Sean McCraw singles on a fly ball to center fielder John Tolisano. Sergio Miranda scores. Watten didn't walk anyone but allowed seven hits, so you might be tempted to go off his 4/1 GO/AO ratio and chalk the hits up to bad luck, but only one of them came on a grounder.
  12. DSL Brewers postponed. Gives my refresh muscles a rest for the night.
  13. Mike McClendon named to All-Star team Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville right-hander Mike McClendon has been named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team and will join teammate Luis Cruz to represent the Sounds on the 30-man squad that takes on the International League stars in the 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 14 at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The 25-year-old McClendon - who was selected as a reserve for the contest by the PCL office - is 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA (12er/37.2ip) and 26 strikeouts in 16 games (three starts) for the Sounds. McClendon has been especially dominant in relief this season, going 3-0 with a 0.81 ERA (2er/22.1ip) and 17 strikeouts in 13 outings. He is also holding opposing Triple-A hitters to a .215 average (17-for79) out of the bullpen. The All-Star nod is the second mid-season honor of McClendon's four-year pro career. His most recent appearance came in the 2007 South Atlantic League All-Star Game. The 2010 Triple-A All-Star Game will be broadcast live on television on MLB Network as well as on the radio on 104.5 FM "The Zone" at 6:05 p.m. CDT.
  14. Brett Lawrie comes in at #15 in Baseball America's midseason update of their prospect list:
  15. For what? Getting out rookie ball hitters? Sorry, no. First-round college pitchers don't get credit for getting outs in the Arizona League. My comment really swings both ways, though--this is basically spring training for him, so whether he's striking out everyone or getting hammered, we don't even know what the Brewers are having throw/not throw right now. All we can really tell from his box score appearances is that he's not injured.
  16. Cody Scarpetta comes in at #4 on this week's Hot Sheet:
  17. Final: @AZL Brewers 11, AZL Royals 3AZL Brewers box score Eric Arnett didn't start but did work five innings, allowing a run on three hits and two walks, fanning six. Again, the numbers are really meaningless given the level of competition and that we don't even know what Arnett's throwing/working on. The offense really went off, led by Tyler Roberts 3-4 line. He smacked two doubles and also walked once. Robbie Garvey was 4-5 with a double and two steals, Justin Parker doubled twice, and Nick Shaw was 2-4 with a double. I'd love for someone to explain to me the point of batting Max Walla 8th. It doesn't matter much in terms of run production but just seems counterproductive from a confidence standpoint. Anyway, Walla was 1-5 with two strikeouts, as was Yadiel Rivera. AZL Brewers play-by-play A seven-run inning is always nice: AZL Brewers Bottom 2nd Justin Parker strikes out swinging. Joseph Paciorek singles on a line drive to left fielder Jerico Blanco. Maxwell Walla singles on a line drive to center fielder Cameron Conner. Joseph Paciorek to 2nd. Nick Shaw singles on a line drive to right fielder Shane Costa. Joseph Paciorek to 3rd. Maxwell Walla to 2nd. With Robert Garvey batting, passed ball by Jin-Ho Shin, Joseph Paciorek scores. Maxwell Walla to 3rd. Nick Shaw to 2nd. Robert Garvey doubles (2) on a line drive to center fielder Cameron Conner. Maxwell Walla scores. Nick Shaw scores. Yadiel Rivera singles on a line drive to left fielder Jerico Blanco. Robert Garvey scores. Kenneth Allison grounds out, shortstop Michael Liberto to first baseman Henry Moreno. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd. With Tyler Roberts batting, Yadiel Rivera steals (3) 3rd base. Tyler Roberts walks. Jason Rogers singles on a line drive to right fielder Shane Costa. Yadiel Rivera scores. Tyler Roberts to 2nd. Justin Parker doubles (4) on a fly ball to center fielder Cameron Conner. Tyler Roberts scores. Jason Rogers scores. Pitcher Change: Dylan Lindsay replaces Robinson Yambati. Joseph Paciorek walks. Maxwell Walla flies out to center fielder Cameron Conner.
  18. Lintz actually got through two innings tonight without allowing a run or (amazingly) a walk. The next two innings were, uh, not as kind. Also, and I know he doesn't really fit into the same box as the aforementioned pitchers, but he was on the BA top 200, Thomas Keeling's first two pro outings have been just brutal. Two outs, three runs, and five walks tonight.
  19. Final: @Memphis 3, Nashville 0Sounds blanked by Redbirds in series opener Nashville Sounds MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Four Memphis pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout of the Nashville Sounds in the Redbirds' 3-0 victory on Thursday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a five-game series. Memphis pitchers retired 18 of the final 19 Nashville batters in the contest, including the last 10 in a row. Nashville's final hit of the night came when Joe Koshansky led off the fourth inning with a double. After that hit, Koshansky was the lone Sounds player to reach base the rest of the way when he was hit by a pitch in the sixth. The shutout defeat was the sixth suffered by Nashville (45-41), which dropped its third straight road contest. Right-hander Chuckie Fick (2-0) made a spot start for Memphis and hurled five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five Nashville batters to earn the victory. The Memphis bullpen closed out the game with four hitless innings. Rich Rundles followed Fick with a scoreless frame, Josh Kinney put up two goose eggs, and Fernando Salas notched his 15th save of the year by retiring the Sounds in order in the ninth. The four Redbirds hurlers combined to strike out 11 Nashville batters. The Sounds had a few chances to score early in the contest but finished 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Overshadowed by the collective Memphis shutout was another outstanding performance by Nashville left-hander Chase Wright, who took a hard-luck loss for the visitors. Wright (6-5) continued his recent dominance on the hill, allowing one run on four hits over his six frames of action. It marked the seventh time his last 11 trips to the hill that he held the opposition to one earned run or less. The effort was the southpaw's seventh quality start of the season. The teams combined for just eight total hits on the evening. No player on either club registered a multiple-hit effort in the contest. Memphis plated the contest's first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mark Shorey led off with a single against Wright and scored later in the frame on a James Rapoport sacrifice fly. The Redbirds increased the lead against ineffective Sounds reliever Jeff Bennett in the seventh. The right-hander threw just one strike among his 19 pitches in the frame, walking four batters. The last free pass, to Rapoport, pushed home Donovan Solano. David Johnson inherited a bases-loaded, one-out jam and allowed one additional run to score on a Ruben Gotay fielder's choice groundout, increasing the Memphis lead to 3-0. Sounds outfielder Brendan Katin extended his longest streak of the year to seven games with a first-inning single. The teams continue the series with a 6:05 p.m. doubleheader on Friday that will make up a May 17th rainout. Right-hander Marty McLeary (2-6, 10.38) will start the opener for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander Lance Lynn (6-6, 5.42). Right-hander Tim Dillard (1-4, 4.99) will make his second start of the year for Nashville in the nightcap against a yet-to-be-announced Redbirds hurler. Nashville box score Jeff Bennett has been really, really ineffective in his second Brewers career. Mat Gamel and Lorenzo Cain were each 1-4. Nashville play-by-play
  20. Scarpetta K's 11 in BC's 6-1 win over Jays Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA - Brevard County starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta struck out a season-high 11 in seven shutout innings as the Manatees topped the Dunedin Blue Jays 6-1 on Thursday night in Viera. Scarpetta retired the side in four separate innings and at one point retired 11 in a row from the fourth inning to the seventh. He walked just one batter and threw 109 pitches - 72 for strikes. The Manatees would give Scarpetta all the run support he would need in the fourth inning. Already up 1-0 on a solo homer by Scott Krieger in the second, Brevard County scored three in the inning to take a 4-0 lead. The inning started with a lead-off double by Sean Halton to left field. Two batters later, Brock Kjeldgaard singled to drive in Halton. Krieger then singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Sean McCraw then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both Kjeldgaard and Krieger over. Franklin Romero then came up with the big blow - a two-out two-run double to center - to make it 4-0 Brevard County. The Manatees scored two more times as McCraw drove in Kjeldgaard with a RBI single in the sixth and Sergio Miranda drove in Matt Cline on a sacrifice fly. Daniel Meadows worked a scoreless eighth in relief of Scarpetta and Jeremy Jeffress pitched the ninth and allowed the only Dunedin run of the game, which was unearned. Kjeldgaard led the way at the dish for Brevard County going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Prince and Krieger also had two hits each. The Manatees will go for a sweep of the Blue Jays on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium.
  21. Final: @Brevard County 6, Dunedin 1Brevard County box score Wow, Cody Scarpetta: 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 11 K, 3/5 GO/AO. Unused to being overshadowed, Jeremy Jeffress finally allowed his first hit of the season. He also uncorked a wild pitch en route to allowed an unearned run. He struck out one. Brock Kjeldgaard was 3-4 with a double, while Scott Krieger homered and singled in four trips. Josh Prince, Matt Cline, and Sean Halton all also doubled. Erik Komatsu was 0-4. Brevard County play-by-play 10 of Scarpetta's 11 strikeouts were swinging. Here's Jeffress's inning: Dunedin Top 9th Pitcher Change: Jeremy Jeffress replaces Daniel Meadows. Michael McDade singles on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Mark Sobolewski strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Jeremy Jeffress. Michael McDade advances to 3rd, on throwing error by catcher Sean McCraw. Brian Van Kirk grounds out, third baseman Sergio Miranda to first baseman Sean Halton. Michael McDade scores. Welinton Ramirez grounds out, third baseman Sergio Miranda to first baseman Sean Halton.
  22. Final: @AZL Cubs 8, AZL Brewers 2AZL Brewers box score Brooks Hall got the start and went three innings, allowing three runs on two hits, two walks, and a hit batter while fanning four. The other five runs came off Kevin Shackelford. Only three different Brewer had hits: Kenny Allison was 3-4, T.J. Mittelstaedt was 2-4, and Nick Shaw was 1-4 with a double. The only other baserunners came on HBP to Justin Parker and Jhonatan Javier. The Brewers drew no walks. Yadiel Rivera was moved down to 7th in the order and went 0-4 with two strikeouts. AZL Brewers play-by-play Hey, at least they scored first: AZL Brewers Top 1st Robert Garvey lines out to shortstop Dustin Harrington. Kenneth Allison singles on a line drive to right fielder Xavier Batista. Jason Rogers reaches on force attempt, fielding error by shortstop Dustin Harrington. Kenneth Allison to 2nd. Justin Parker hit by pitch. Kenneth Allison to 3rd. Jason Rogers to 2nd. Thomas Mittelstaedt singles on a line drive to right fielder Xavier Batista. Kenneth Allison scores. Jason Rogers scores. Justin Parker to 3rd. Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging. Nick Shaw pops out to third baseman Jake McAloose in foul territory.
  23. Three-run sixth leads BC past Dunedin Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA - The Brevard County Manatees broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the sixth inning, to defeat the Dunedin Blue Jays 7-4 in the first game of a three-game series at Space Coast Stadium in Viera on Wednesday night. Brevard County's big sixth inning started with back-to-back walks drawn by Michael Roberts and Steve Braun. Josh Prince then reached on a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Matt Cline singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Roberts to give Brevard County a 5-4 lead. Three batters later with two outs, Sergio Miranda hit the first pitch that he saw right past the diving Justin McClanahan at second base, to score Braun and Prince and make it a 7-4 game. Brevard County (33-49 overall, 6-7 second half) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third on a one-out double by Sean Halton that drove in Prince and Erik Komatsu. Darren Byrd made his first start on the mound as a Manatee and went four innings and allowed two runs on the night, that came on a triple by Dunedin (47-36, 6-7) catcher Travis d'Arnaud in the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. Byrd struck out one and walked one. The Manatees scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth as Roberts drove in Scott Krieger on a RBI double in the fourth and Halton's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Komatsu to make it 4-2 in favor of Brevard County after five innings. Brandon Ritchie relieved Byrd and went 1 2/3 innings and Corey Frerichs inherited two runners from Ritchie in the sixth and both scored on a double by Brian Van Kirk as the Manatees allowed the Blue Jays to tie up the game once again at 4-4. Frerichs would throw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and earn the win. Andre Lamontagne shut the door on the Blue Jays in the ninth and earned his third save of the season. Prince, Komatsu and Miranda had two hits each for the Manatees. Halton drove in three runs, while Miranda knocked in two. Brevard County and Dunedin will continue its series on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium in Viera. It will be Thirsty Thursday, so start the weekend early with Thirsty Thursday drink specials - 20-oz Coca-Cola and 18-oz Budweiser products are just $2.00!
