  1. Agreed. He was solid while he was up, but it just doesn't make sense to have him on the bench when he's still learning his new position. He needs to be playing everyday. That said, it was nice to have him up for a few days, make his major league debut, and get his first hit. Hopefully, it'll drive him even more to get back up to the bigs. I like bringing Stetter up as a LOOGY for a couple of days until Gallardo comes back. He'll certainly get used against the Reds.
  2. Don, I'm not sure where you heard these, but they're all very hard to believe. If you'd could reveal or at least hint at your source for your points they might be able to hold more water, so to speak. 1. Cottingham, the AD, was the one interviewing candidates (along with one or two other unnamed people--likely that former AD Bill Cords was one). Only after they chose Williams--after being rebuffed by Bennett, Miller, Grant and maybe others--did Wild meet with him at all. In fact, Wild told Todd Rosiak that he had not met with any other candidates and "had not met Buzz previously". There is no way he would have made the decision to hire him without knowing him first. 2. The issue with hiring Miller away from Xavier was not the salary that would be offered to the coach, but rather the fact that that he had a $2 million buyout of his contract which he recently had extended. In fact, that's one of the same reasons why Indiana chose to go in another direction. 3. While it's possible that some trustees may want to see Wild out as President, there is no way he could make either this or the "Gold" debacle singlehandedly. There are 31 trustees (of which Wild is one), and each and every one of them knew and at least to some degree supported that decision. For example, I find it very hard to believe that trustee Anne Zizzo didn't support or push for that decision when her PR company was chosen by MU to market the new nickname. Also, the fact that you referred to him as 'Buzzkill' takes away from the credibility of what you may have heard.
  3. Here's the latest (I'm looking for something to talk about other than the Brewers right now): I'd have to say on the whole, the Williams hiring is already paying dividends as far as recruiting goes. Who knows what will happen when the season starts, but having four seniors and a junior in the starting lineup certainly doesn't hurt. Returning - PG James (sr.), SG McNeal (sr.), SF Matthews (sr.), PF Hayward (jr.), C Burke (sr.), PF/C Mbakwe (soph.), SG Cubillan (jr.) (possible redshirt-shoulder), PG Acker (jr.), C Hazel (soph.) Incoming - C Chris Otule (fr.), SF/PF Joseph Fulce (so.), SG Jimmy Butler (so.), (one more open 2008 scholarship), PF Erik Williams (2009) Outgoing - C Barro (graduation), PF/C Blackledge (graduation), SF/PF Fitzgerald (graduation), SG Christopherson (transfer to Iowa State), SG Nick Williams (released from NLI), PG Tyshawn Taylor (released from NLI)
  4. Bingo. Except for that one pitch, Gagne has looked like a stud closer the last two games. Maybe this should be in the "silver lining" thread, but the fact that Gagne made a mistake, learned from it (he now knows he can trust Kendall's pitch calling) and we still won the game can only help us in the long run.
  5. I knew I shouldn't have put so many names in the first post! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  6. My first choice would be Buzz Williams. He'd be able to keep most of the players and incoming recruits around, and he's a very good recruiter. I'll be very disappointed if the search committee doesn't make an effort to contact Travis Ford or Anthony Grant. Both are young coaching prospects on their way up. Ford was mentioned as a possibility for Kentucky last year, and Grant as a possible replacement for Donovan at Florida when it looked like he was going to Kentucky. I'd be absolutely thrilled with either one of those two. Lon Krueger would be another one I'd be ok with.
  7. How pleased I personally would be if each of these were hired: Tony Bennett (Washington State) - Very Excited Brad Brownwell (Wright State) - Mildly Pleased John Calipari (Memphis) - Mildly Pleased Mark Few (Gonzaga) - Mildly Pleased Travis Ford (Massachusetts) - Very Excited Anthony Grant (Virginia Commonwealth) - Very Excited Jim Larranaga (George Mason) - Disappointed Rick Majerus (St. Louis) - Disappointed Sean Miller (Xavier) - Very Excited Tubby Smith (Minnesota) - Disappointed Bruce Weber (Illinois) - Disappointed Buzz Williams (Marquette assistant) - Very Excited
  8. I think this deserves it's own thread, and I don't want it to get buried in an Indiana thread. Here are names I've seen rumored as possible replacements. I'll list a bunch of names I've seen come up (in alphabetical order), and we can debate their qualifications from there. Tony Bennett (Washington State) Brad Brownwell (Wright State) John Calipari (Memphis) Mark Few (Gonzaga) Travis Ford (Massachusetts) Anthony Grant (Virginia Commonwealth) Jim Larranaga (George Mason) Rick Majerus (St. Louis) Sean Miller (Xavier) Tubby Smith (Minnesota) Bruce Weber (Illinois) Buzz Williams (Marquette assistant)
  9. Take off the www. and the link works. golfdretzka.tripod.com.
  10. Correct, you don't really have to declare the redshirt ahead of time. As long as the player isn't in any games, they still have the option of redshirting. Nankivil and Jarmusz could have done this, but once they took the floor at all (even in garbage time) the option was lost.
  11. I guess this just doesn't make sense to me. The guy that has a chance to make an immediate impact should be redshirted, while the ones that aren't expected to make an immediate impact should play? Seems backwards to me.
  12. I've seen this said a lot. Why is it that Mbakwe's year was "wasted" and it wasn't for other UW and MU freshmen? Leuer 276 minutes Mbakwe 101 minutes Jarmusz 87 minutes Christopherson 87 minutes Hazel 48 minutes Nankivil 46 minutes MU's weakness was its bigs, and Mbakwe filled in with some good minutes down the stretch. He wasn't dominant by any means, but they took a chance that he could be the difference in a tournament game. Did it work out as well as they had hoped? No. Was it a 'waste'? I don't think so. However, Nankivil was healthy all year and was still never going to crack the lineup ahead of Butch and Stiemsma. To me, his year seems like it was more of a 'waste' than Mbakwe's.
  13. If winning is a prerequisite (at least as much it seems to be) shouldn't Schuerholz from the Braves be on this list?
  14. That makes sense. A lot more than my other theory that Bugs Bunny was the pitcher. Seriously though, great find and great analysis. I agree with what you're saying. Over the course of last season Estrada's one-pitch at bat's were frustrating.
  15. I love seeing that Cameron works the count. But I'll take the bait here...who was the umpire when he struck out on 1 and 2 pitches? Enrico Pallazzo?
  16. Just like this one, the lambeauleap.net link on the homepage of brewerfan.net takes you to the old forum. Can it be changed to take you to the LL.net homepage or at least the new LL forums? Thanks.
  17. • The holdouts in the vote to support limited use of instant replay (which passed 25-5) were the Reds, Cubs, Astros, Brewers and Twins. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/jon_heyman/11/07/scoop.wednesday/2.html Interesting.
  18. The Cubs got swept by the D-Backs who got swept by the Rockies who got swept by the Red Sox. Glad that wasn't the Crew. ------------------------------------------ http://www.brewerfan.net/images/icons/lock.gifLocked and superseded by a new designated Silver Lining thread: 2008 Silver Lining Thread --1992casey ------------------------------------------
  19. It might be old news to you now, but sources say Shumpert will make his decision on Thursday. He hasn't given any hints yet, and has reasons for picking each of his final three--Marquette (close to home, can play Point Guard for a highly ranked Big East team), North Carolina (history of sending LOTS of players to the NBA, can play in the ACC, but probably wouldn't be a PG) and Georgia Tech (can play PG right away in the ACC). Shumpert looks like the kind of player that could succeed on any team in any league. It would be a great day for MU Basketball if he commits here, and if he does I'll be doing backflips all day. (Actually, first I'll have to learn how to do a backflip....then I'll do backflips.)

  22. I like it. Gwynn was going to be gone this weekend anyway, and with the doubleheader on Saturday, we need all the fresh arms we can spare. Also, Graffanino has proven to be a decent option in the outfield, so I would say we're better off than we would have been at the beginning of the year with only Hart, Hall, Jenkins, and Mench in the outfield. My guess is that after this road trip (or shortly after in Gwynn's case), Gwynn or Gross will be back up with the Crew.
  23. Looks like we're all thinking along the same lines....
  24. I remember a couple of games in April where the crew was down, scored late runs to tie it, and then won in extras. One was in Florida (I think it was the game they finished the next day) and the other was in Chicago (with the wind blowing in and Prince hitting a homer or two anyway).
  25. About a week and a half to go and I still have these tickets. Any advice from anyone as far as what I could do with these? When you have tickets that you can't use, what do you do? E-bay? Some other outlet (internet or otherwise)? Any advice/suggestions/comments are appreciated.
