  1. Still digesting the brackets, but here's what I think so far: As much as I hate Duke and love to pick them to lose, they should walk into the final four. Temple is going to be a tough game for the Badgers with their zone defense. The Badgers shot 1-14 from 3 when they played Dunphy in 2003. I do really want the UW-UK match-up. The Badgers generally get dumped by hot shooting teams and are great at neutralizing athletic teams like Kentucky. Still, if Kentucky plays to their potential, they should win by at least 10. Marquette has a decent shot against New Mexico, but NM is a good rebounding team despite their size. I expect Marquette to lose. The Milwaukee games are mediocre at best.
  2. Is anyone else getting sick of spring training? I am ready for opening day already, and we still have over 3 weeks to go.
  3. Narveson has to be a lock to make the team at this point. Personally, I think he would do well as a middle reliever. We need someone to pitch the 5th-7th innings when Suppan starts.
  4. The fog that occurred today can be referred to as "advection fog". It occurs from the mixing between the cold air over the snow (Temp~35 F, Dew Point~35 F, RH=100%) with the warm air moving in from the south (Temp~55 F, Dew Point~50 F, RH=83%). If the mix of the two air masses has a relatively humidity over 100%, fog will form. An inversion (warm air aloft) was trapping drier air at mid levels from mixing to the surface, which helped also (and contributed to the poor air quality).
  5. That would be an incredible bracket, although we still have the conference tournament to go. If the Badgers beat Illinois, they will almost certainly get a 4 seed.
  6. Never drank a coffee Never smoked a cigaretteNever spent any money on lottery tickets/never been to a casinoNever shaved with a non-electric razorNever did a full all-nighter without at least taking a napNever seen a tornado (despite many attempts to)
  7. I think a few simple fixes would make things better. 1. Wildcard round becomes best of 7 2. All extra off days are removed in playoff series. Series are 2-3-2, with 2 days off for travel. One additional day off is allotted between series. Baseball's simplicity is what makes it great. I would be opposed to anything that allows additional complexity to the postseason.
  8. Thanks for the kind words guys. Making the decision will be extremely difficult. I have heard nothing from the other 7 grad schools that I applied to, but I only have a few weeks to accept/decline this offer. I would hate to accept this offer and then get a better one in April--not to mention the whole logistics of visiting the place, potentially moving, etc. etc. Better than not having any decision to make though :-)
  9. Indiana needs to stick with Crean. He looks really bad right now because he is a mediocre coach at best. However, he can recruit, and Indiana will never have problems drawing in big names. Crean started 3 freshmen and a sophomore last night. Imagine Trevon Hughes against the other B10 powers as a freshman, with no experienced upperclassmen to help him out. The turnovers will go down with time. To Crean's credit, they play a solid offensive game, they just took poor/off-balanced shots. Bo Ryan will probably always dominate Crean, but he will start winning games next year and especially the year after.
  10. I received an offer today to go to grad school at Florida International University in Miami. I'm not sure if I will accept and I plan on visiting before I make my decision. Hopefully I will have other offers to consider, but considering the economy, I am thrilled to get at least one. However, I know absolutely nothing about Miami except for the minimal research that I've done on the school's meteorology program. I am most interested in finding out info about the school itself, the neighborhood, or any other relevant information for someone who could potentially be moving to Miami. Thanks!
  11. It's Gavinski Time!!!
  12. This one isn't all lake effect, there is some help from a larger scale weather system as well. The lake effect snow was expected to mostly remain in Illinois/Indiana, but the winds have been pushing it back to the west, which was not forecasted this morning. The global warming debate is complicated. Personally, I think most of the action this winter can be attributed to El Nino. I think there also may have been a feedback effect from getting the early-season snow cover in the northern states that never really melted. All the cold airmasses are getting extra help from that big snowpack, which is combining with the strong subtropical jet (typical of El Nino) to bring winter storms to the Southern/Eastern US.
  13. That storm really busted. 7-11" forecasts drop to a final 1-3". On a more positive note, the normal high in Milwaukee is now 34--and the temperatures should start to reflect that by next weekend.
  14. Latest models weaken the storm and push it farther SE, away from Wisconsin. My forecast is 3-5" in Madison, 4-8" in Milwaukee. Snow should start around Sunday night around midnight. Edit: Latest forecast suggests even less snow--maybe 2-3" in Madison and 3-6" in Milwaukee.
  15. Today's models have the arctic air looking less likely but the major snowstorm looking much more likely. Oh, and the first week of March is looking warm.
  16. This thread has been quiet, but I have some good news for the snow lovers. The models have been showing a storm system moving through the Ohio Valley on Monday, but the latest run has pushed it much farther north, with Chicago getting a major snowstorm and the edge of the precipitation now reaching southern Wisconsin. At this point, it would only be a 1-3" event, but we only need the forecast track to move about 100 miles north to get a nice 6"+ storm. I like to get the word out as early as possible, but confidence is still very low on this one, probably only about a 10-20% chance of a big storm. However, I am much more confident about arctic air moving in by late next week. Winter is not over yet--it is still mid-February :-)
  17. My only concern is that the kids will be used as pawns for collectors to get the autographs now. Nevertheless, this is still a good move.
  18. This will never catch on. The Cubs are basically saying that their high-income fans are more privileged than the average Cubs fan. Not only do wealthy fans get to sit in the more expensive seats, they now have the honor of buying tickets ahead of people who are struggling financially and looking to save money. This is part of the Cubs continued plan to take advantage of an extremely loyal fan base that will love the team no matter what. Maybe it is smart marketing, but I think the better approach would be to raise tickets 20% across the board and then offer discounts to the fans that are willing to make the effort to seek out promotions. Edit: For what it's worth, most of the fans on NSBB aren't taking the bait and are waiting for the normal prices on Friday.
  19. My family has very mixed basketball allegiances. My father is a UW grad who has been a Marquette season ticket holder since the mid-1990s. He cheers for both although he tends to favor Marquette now. I always liked both, but favored Marquette--and I was really into Marquette basketball when I went to Marquette High School in the early 2000s. When I came to UW, I initially still favored Marquette, but I quickly switched--it was for sure after I went to a game freshman year where Taylor, Tucker, and Butch lit up #2 Pittsburgh. My brother now goes to MU and is a huge Marquette basketball fan. Of course, I still have a soft spot for Marquette after all those years, and it has actually been easier to pull for them since Crean left. However, I heavily cheer for the Big Ten over the Big East, I like the style of basketball much better in the B10.
  20. I was informed that our NCAA tickets arrived on Friday. Got section 402, row M which is much better than the row W that we had last time.
  21. This thread sums up one of the few reasons why I am sometimes embarrassed to be a Brewers fan. 1) Do you think the team does not realize that they gave up a 3-run lead and/or that their fans might not be happy about it? 2) I'm sure the pitcher feels great that he just gave up back-to-back jacks. Why add insult to injury? In college basketball, if a team just gave up a few buckets, it is standard for the home crowd to cheer them on as they come down the court. Why not cheer a team/player after a tough inning to show support? 4) Once again, I am sure the team is just thrilled to lose 7 games in a row. It would never have any effect on their pride or momentum... 5) Generally, players have called out the fans/organization because of booing--so the correct response is obviously to boo them more! 7) As we have seen on these forums, virtually all managerial decisions are debatable. What happens if a manager makes a horrible decision but it works anyway--should we still boo them? As for when I think booing is appropriate: 1) Lack of effort--although that one is still debatable 2) The opposition--we want to create a home field advantage, right? 3) Players who have knowingly cheated/taken steroids 4) Bad umpiring Obviously, every fan has a "right" to boo. But the players also have a "right" to be upset about it and a "right" to sign in a different city in free agency. They are human after all, and there is no reason why they should tolerate it if there are fans in other cities who will give them more support.
  22. I really hope they have Curling on at 2 AM again.
  23. Not sure why this is a surprise when you compare Hart's numbers to Francoeur. Hart is still underpaid compared to Francoeur--he could have asked for even more money. Obviously you can't cut him. As much as the system is arguably flawed, the Brewers do not want to be labeled as player-unfriendly. It is already hard enough to get free agents to come to Milwaukee without paying a premium. Hart was already starting to take it from the fans last year, and that will likely intensify this year. From Corey's perspective, he was just taking the salary that he could get--there are plenty of other major league teams that would be happy with a 20/20 outfielder at $5 million/year. He swings aimlessly at breaking balls, but Geoff Jenkins still had a fine career with that flaw. The Brewers also do not have a suitable replacement--our options for CF are a .230 hitter or a .229 hitter. My advice to the fans is to forget about it and cheer for him.
  24. Like I said, there are plenty of students to show up for games and cheer enthusiastically. However, many of them are watching on TV. I love college basketball and spent 4 years at Wisconsin, but I never had the fortune to actually get student season tickets. Fair weather fan students have about 50% of the basketball tickets. They go to the big games and their tickets go unused for the other games--or they scalp them to other students who actually like basketball at ridiculous rates. The only way to solve the issue is to scan IDs or offer a reward system for actually using the tickets. The Izzone does this, I do not understand why Wisconsin will not. Basically, it would be like the Brewers just doing a general lottery for playoff tickets, where a season ticket holder for 30 years would get the same chance at tickets as somebody who goes to 1 game per year.
