  1. It sucks that Chicago got him but I hate that any of these teams get rewarded for tanking. He should go to one of the teams that is trying but narrowly missed the playoffs like Buffalo or Ottawa.
  2. Exactly. Where did "Devil Magic" come from? Every mediocre pitcher seemed to miraculously turn things around in St. Louis over the course of two decades, four different managers, different suits in the front office, etc. etc. The one constant over that period was Yadi. Yet again in 2023 they rolled out a pitching staff that was possibly the worst in the division on paper and expected them to magically turn into all-stars again. Did Yadi ever make a single boneheaded play like this over the course of his entire career? If I'm the Cardinals, I'm calling up Yadi and offering him a blank check to come back and be on the coaching staff.
  3. Sadly, there are a lot of people out there, especially older ones, who drive cars with one foot on the gas and the other one on the brake. It’s common for them to accidentally floor it when they try to hit the brake. I put an air tag in my car so that I can chase it down if it ever gets stolen. It is my feeling that the pandemic reduction in police enforcement of driving violations was a grave error and we desperately need to more widely use camera technology to enforce traffic violations.
  4. I’m so excited you’re doing this. My parents took me to Wrigley Field for my 13th birthday and I’ll never forget it. Amazingly I haven’t been back since! I visited Fenway for the first time last summer and it took me right back down memory lane to Wrigley. That place just radiates baseball in its finest form. The Sox fans are pretty great, knowledgeable and friendly. We were wearing some Mariners gear and they chatted with us about Julio Rodriguez and how they wished the Sox had locked up Mookie Betts. Can’t remember who the Sox were playing that day but last year was a lost cause for them. It was easy to walk there from the Green Line (which is such a cool experience to ride those old trains) and the Fenway neighborhood is loaded with restaurants to eat at prior to the game. We went on a rainy day and the stadium was maybe a third full and about an hour before the game I picked up grandstand tickets for $15 each on stubhub. The one not so nice thing I’ll say about Fenway is that those old narrow wooden seats with no leg room are truly awful. I watched maybe 2 innings of baseball and then walked around the concourse and across the street (which is part of the “inside” of the stadium). If I had to go again I would splurge for those box seats that are closer to the field and looked more comfortable. But how lucky are we that a living time capsule like Fenway still exists, in the middle of a fantastic city like Boston?
  5. As a Kraken fan I wasn’t surprised with that result, Dallas was the better team this year and that carried over into the playoffs. And then you throw in that questionable goalie swap after game 1 and that was the series. We’re underdogs again against the Stars but I think we’ll manage to make it a long series, especially if Grubauer can stay hot in net. It sure seems to be setting up for Edmonton to take the west but Vegas seems to be peaking at the right time and I never trust the Oilers’ defense and goaltending.
  6. My brother called them the "Cream City Clunkers" in the 4th quarter and I can't get that nickname out of my head now.
  7. The silver lining is that if they were going to lose anyway, it was better to go out in spectacular fashion to force more changes. The pessimist in me says that was their last real chance to win another 'ship with Giannis, swapping out the role players isn't going to make much of a difference. A coaching change could make a difference though, if they have the guts to do it.
  8. Toronto-Boston is looking likely which is going to be fantastic hockey. NY/NJ is the series that looks most likely to go 7. Seattle-Colorado possibly as well, although Seattle has outplayed the Avalanche and should (hopefully, pretty please) advance.
  9. Milwaukee's air is 2% less dense than sea level. Denver is 14% less dense. Mexico City is 20% less dense. So it's not terrible but you're adding about a third more to the Coors Field effect. It's already going to be hard to pull off a Mexico expansion, so scaring pitchers away is not going to help things. And Monterrey is a fairly wealthy city as well (not quite as high as Mexico City I think...)
  10. I think it would 100% be Monterrey -- specifically the affluent San Pedro Garza García area. Both the elevation and travel distance are issues in Mexico City. It will be interesting to see how the ball carries there this weekend. Nearly a third of MLB players are Latino. Many of them would feel more comfortable playing and living in Mexico than they do in the US. It just makes too much sense. Any expansion in the US runs into the problem of cannibalizing an existing market. The Giants will be thrilled to have the A's out of the Bay Area. Nashville and Raleigh can surely support MLB teams, but they will eat into the Braves fanbase. One of my top takeaways from the WBC was how much of a disaster the Marlins franchise is. Did you see those crowds in Miami? Almost all of those people live there.
  11. Univision. Can you imagine how many viewers that would draw? The Blue Jays have higher TV viewership than the Yankees and a Mexico team could top that, with many of the viewers being Mexican immigrants living in the US. Someone just needs to be the first to do it. Everyone was skeptical about putting a "big four" team in Vegas, then the NHL did it first and they are reaping the benefits of turning Vegas into a hockey town. The safety concerns are overblown...they have MLB teams in Milwaukee, Detroit, and St. Louis and nobody says a word about the safety of those cities.
  12. Milwaukee has already lost an MLB team once and they almost lost the Brewers in the 90s. It could easily happen again. Vegas is still not inevitable. If public officials balk at giving tax dollars to a new stadium, I guarantee you'll see some of those other options come up. MLB expansion talks will get serious the second the A's and Rays stadium deals are inked. The loss of RSN revenue is going to be the catalyst to bring in some new cash from expansion fees. Everyone seems to know this and various groups of investors have been getting their ducks in a row...Portland, SLC, Nashville, and Raleigh. Right now I would predict that 31 and 32 will be Nashville and Raleigh unless one of the groups out west mounts a more serious campaign. When they go to 33/34 I suspect they will more seriously consider international expansion, with Monterrey MX being the most likely target.
  13. Yeah I agree with this, basically nobody was fully committed to having the A's in Oakland. Which is fine. But maybe next time it will be Milwaukee who has an old stadium and an owner/commissioner who see a destination where the grass is greener. Loyalty is generally limited to a 30-year lease.
  14. Back to cheering for the Mariners (as well as the Brewers) for me tonight, hopefully they have extra motivation to beat the dirty birds after getting embarrassed by the Brewers.
  15. Personally I hope they fail miserably. It sickens me that the A's used the movie Major League as a blueprint for getting out of Oakland. It sickens me that the Montreal Expos situation was allowed to repeat itself. As of right now there are plenty of opportunities for failure. No tax money has been granted to the Vegas franchise yet, all they have is the land. They have no other city to hold as leverage because Oakland was smart enough to call their bluff. Everybody knows that a deal could have been accomplished in the bay area if that's what ownership wanted and there are more than enough A's fans in the bay area to support a team if they played somewhere that wasn't a literal sewage dump. What's the high water mark for success here? Probably the Arizona Diamondbacks, who play in a bigger market and have a fanbase that has been largely disengaged for the past 20 years. I find it unlikely that the Vegas locals will embrace this team. The Raiders are actively disliked in Vegas. The Golden Knights are extremely popular because the locals feel that the team belongs to them and nobody else. The new team is almost certainly going to keep the A's branding but there's no way that anyone in Oakland continues to follow this team. They will be starting from scratch with a terrible roster and low budget in what is now a crowded sports market. Good luck.
  16. Sounds like the A's will initially play in a minor league stadium, possibly as soon as 2024, with an MLB stadium opening in 2027. A sad day for Oakland A's fans. https://www.8newsnow.com/sports/local-sports/las-vegas-as/as-have-agreement-to-play-at-las-vegas-ballpark/?utm_source=klas_app&utm_medium=social&utm_content=share-link
  17. Exactly, his next destination is a golf outing with Felix Hernandez, who just turned 37 earlier this month.
  18. There it is, a career high in strikeouts.
  19. You just want to limit the damage that a guy like Julio does. At least the HR didn't happen with the bases loaded in the 11th.
  20. Can't wait to see all of the hot takes on Scherzer getting tossed!
  21. Marco is a contact pitcher who doesn't crack 90. He pounds the strike zone and gets a ton of ground balls when he's on. The key to beating him is hitting his misses out of the park. He's been a little wild this year so the Brewers need to take their BBs today if he's not throwing strikes.
  22. Wong is lucky the Mariners have nobody else to play 2B right now.
  23. Yeah Sewald is deceptive, he’s been fooling guys like that for years now.
