  1. Thank you Tracy for leaving in Valentin against the lefty. Robert
  2. That's a pretty large shakeup in the bottom half of the order. The absence of Jenkins is noted here. Truth be told, against lefties that might be close to the optimal lineup, although I think Miller is certainly going to revert to more normal catcher numbers soon. Robert
  3. Toss in two more shirts sold by Branyan today. The perfect advertising pitchman. Robert
  4. So, how do you get a 3TO t-shirt? Robert
  5. It also looks like Remlinger and Rusch are first in line to pitch for the Cubs, so the Brewers can trot out their right-handed bench players. I'll still contend that using Magruder in that situation when you have 3 infielders on the bench that all hit righties just as well as Magruder was silly and a waste of bench flexibility. Bad managing by Yost there. Robert
  6. I'd have liked it a lot better if Yost had lead off with Cirillo and saved Magruder. I don't have much faith in Jenkins here. Robert
  7. Probably the last inning for each starter. Let's see whose bullpen is better. Robert
  8. http://www.mindgazer.org/dontpanic/images/hgttg_t.gif Needs to be said. Robert
  9. Someone should send a tape of that game to Clancy. That should dispel any notion of Corey Hart to third base. I'm probably overreacting, but last night Corey Hart looked like his future was at first base on someone else's team. Robert
  10. Let me say that the bottom of the 8th was some of the worst defense that I've ever seen in professional baseball. Ben Grieve would have been of more use than Corey Hart. Seriously. Rickie Weeks wasn't much better. Someone should save that as Example #1 in the myth of fielding percentage. Robert
  11. Helms's hit came off the lefty, didn't it? Nice pitching job by Glover. He certainly didn't hurt his chances of making the starting rotation with that outing. Robert
  12. 102 OPS+ at a corner spot with zero (and arguably negative) defensive value isn't "above average". Especially when he really stunk it up in the first half when the games still had some meaning, although not for long, before turning to evaluating players for the next year. That said, yeah he wasn't as awful as he gets talked about. There have been worse players on just about every team in the history of the Brewers. Of course, very few of them were as "pimped" and as old as Lenny Harris. And I think the hype is what sets people off. People probably would lay off Helms some if Yost wasn't pimping him at every opportunity as well. Although, it must be noted that since he left Milwaukee, Lenny Harris has been just as bad as his detractors have claimed. Particularly in his stint in Chicago. Robert
  13. Bot of 1st (Haren pitching) Clark E-5 (Clark on 1st) (Clark Steals 2nd) Hall 6-3 (Clark stays on 2nd) Overbay BB (runners advance on wild pitch) Jenkins 5-3 (runners stay put) 3T0 F-9 (sliding catch by Swisher) Can this example be put in the discussion of why making contact, by itself, means little? Not a K in sight and a runner on third is stranded with less than 2 outs. Robert
  14. Burnitz was good enough to make an All Star team. And he wasn't the lone team representative that year. I wish all are top prospects were merely that "solid". Robert
  15. "It's not a ploy, it's not a posturing, it's not a back-you-into-a-corner," Smith said. "It's a decision we've made. We have no plans at this point, unfortunately, to sign Justin Verlander. I'm not happy about it." Sure. Nice to have the reminder that you just can't believe everything you're told. Robert
  16. Yeah there clearly is collusion going on, but it really only affects a handful of draftees in the first round, unlike free agency collusion which affected hundreds of players. I've no doubt that a lawsuit could be fought and won, but the reward doesn't seem worth it. I suspect that MLB could gain a draft cap by proposing a salary floor to the union. Other than Tampa, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City it's tough to see who would really be opposed. Of course, the legality of that would be up for grabs. The Union might have to grant first rounders membership in order to make it legal. I don't expect much of a downward push for bonus money. You have to be somewhat competitive with bonus money to football, basketball, and even hockey for that rare multi-sport star that comes around. Still, if MLB could control costs a bit more, then maybe we'd see the worst teams getting the best players which is the whole intent of the draft. Robert
  17. I'm incredibly frustrated with the way this team is finishing up the season. They haven't beaten a contending team in over a month and are going to have a tough time even matching last year's poor record. Maybe they're "battlin'", maybe they're not, either way they're playing at an unacceptable level and management can't find ways to make changes. They're wasting everyone's time trotting out the same old lineups, and frankly, the players are playing like they realize it. It's just maddening. Robert
  18. Hey, loss 82. It's official, 12 straight losing seasons. Robert
  19. Fair point. Still, a Houston victory doesn't do it for me like a Cubs loss does. That's the pure joy of schadenfreude. Robert
  20. The good news about the rain out is that the Brewers missed Oliver Perez, who's busy mowing down the red hot Astros as I type this. It's a blessing in disguise. Robert
  21. It probably shouldn't bother me too much, but I just get irritated every time I see Billy Hall in the #2 hole in the order. Couldn't they stick Clark or Ginter there? Other than the catchers, I don't know of a hitter on the team less suited to batting at the top of the order than Hall. Robert
  22. You're forgetting maintenance costs Endaround. I don't fault the Pirates for not having a roof. They'll have the tickets exchanged and won't lose much for attendance. And it's a different market. A roof is important for Milwaukee given the competition in the area. There aren't two teams 90 miles from Pittsburgh. And the lack of a quality product for years. St. Louis doesn't need a dome to draw big crowds. Nor do the Cubs. Or Boston. Or the New York teams. Or Baltimore. Or San Francisco. Given the cost of a retractable dome, if you are in a position to avoid it, you're undoubtedly better off. Robert
  23. But how does this affect the integrity of the playoff race? Robert
  24. Could this finally be the end of the Wes Obermueller experience as starter? Please? Robert
  25. I think Philly is looking forward to life after Bowa. I'm surprised he's still there. Robert
