  1. doug melvin said today that the brewers might go with a 13-man pitching staff until kyle lohse proves he can pitch deep into games. that additional pitcher will likely be one already on the 40-man roster, given how the bench is shaping.
  2. assuming bianchi and green open the season on the disabled list, i'm thinking the 40-man spot goes to blake lalli. alex gonzalez backs up at second, short and third. martin maldonado starts at first. lalli backs up at catcher and at first base. when corey hart returns, lalli can be optioned and remains as catching depth on the 40-man roster in case of an injury.
  3. could the brewers make any of these moves if de los santos continues to have visa problems and is unable to enter this country, or would that qualify for a move to the restricted list? de los santos was indeed placed on the restricted list. with the signing of kyle lohse, the roster remains at 39.
  4. 40-man roster spots are in very short supply (none available, after lohse signs). green and bianchi need to get healthy by 1 april, or the brewers risk losing players currently on their 40-man roster to call up suitable replacements.
  5. reports are that mark rogers is headed to the disabled list. if it's the 15-day disabled list, he would still remain on the 40-man roster.
  6. the brewers can retain peralta for an extra year (through 2019) if he remains optioned at nashville until late may. i'd go with gallardo, lohse, estrada, narveson and fiers until one falters or gets injured.
  7. khris davis is on the 40-man roster. lalli and murphy are not. the brewers need to ask if it's worth risking losing another player currently on the 40-man just to get lalli or murphy (or even figaro or hand, for that matter). i don't see any players worth the risk of losing . . . except maybe mark rogers or caleb gindl.
  8. if the reports of kyle lohse signing are true, he takes the final open spot on the 40-man roster. this move might make mark rogers more expendable, opening up a 40-man spot.
  9. not necessarily. indications are that jeff bianchi, taylor green and mark rogers could all be placed on the 15-day disabled list. 40-man roster spots might be taken by position players to fill the voids of bianchi and green. the brewers have one spot open, and could put miguel de los santos on the 60-day disabled list to open a second spot. the opening of a third spot for either hand or figaro would mean risking losing a player. thus, the final bullpen spot could go to a pitcher the brewers have already optioned.
  10. letting rogers go would send a negative message to other recent #1 draft picks trying to right themselves.
  11. they're planning on carrying 12. roenicke has indicated that brandon kintzler will make the bullpen, so it is indeed down to one of those three pitchers for the final bullpen spot (barring any outside moves).
  12. even though olmsted was optioned today, he can be sent up and down for the next three seasons. he turned a lot of heads in spring training, and he has to know that a call-up by the brewers can't be too far down the line.
  13. as explained here, barring any acquisitions outside the organization, it's harder for hand to make the club if both green and bianchi open the season on the disabled list. if mark rogers tanks and the brewers deem he's not worthy trying to keep, then another 40-man roster spot opens up. at the start of spring training, this didn't seem at all possible. now, we'll have to wait and see. sunday's start is very important for rogers.
  14. josh stinson has been optioned to nashville. it's his final option year, meaning he can sent back and forth this season, but come next season, he'd have to be exposed to waivers to be sent down. dayton buller also returned to minor league camp. 34 players remain in big league camp.
  15. the brewers may have to do this to open up a second 40-man roster spot if both jeff bianchi and taylor green open the season on the 15-day disabled list--especially if alex gonzalez is pegged as the starting first baseman. within the organization, donnie murphy and blake lalli appear to be the most able to play the positions that jeff bianchi and taylor green would play--essentially everything on the infield. both would have to be added to the 40-man roster.
  16. taylor green has a hip injury. uncertain of how long he'll be out at this point, but give the advantage to sean halton, blake lalli and/or hunter morris for now.
  17. advantage for the former is that he's already on the 40-man roster. the roster's currently at 39, so hand could be added, but that would take away a spot from a position player.
  18. optioned players can play in "a" games during cactus league play per adam mccalvy: thus, in theory, if the brewers were to option fiers and/or peralta today, they could still get work in during cactus league games but not be on the brewers' 25-man roster until their day to pitch in the regular season.
  19. seeing that the brewers just traded for a third baseman to play at nashville, one could think that they're projecting taylor green being with the big league club and not down at nashville. there's little room for green to play at first, with halton, morris and lalli all potentially seeking playing time there. it could also be a sign of projecting that jeff bianchi will open the season on the disabled list.
  20. as expected, the brewers place mat gamel on the 60-day disabled list. this puts the 40-man at 39 players. the spot's available for a player in camp, a waiver claim or a trade.
  21. the downside to this strategy is that unless needed to replace an injured player, an optioned player must remain in the minor leagues for 10 days. the strategy i suggested would require the brewers to option fiers and/or peralta very soon so the 11th day down could be his day to start in the rotation. what's unclear is whether or not the brewers could pull those players back over to play any of the remaining major league spring training games, or if they'd be forced to play in minor league spring training games (and thus, against lesser talent). furthermore, a rotation for nashville appears to have formed, and pitchers such as hiram burgos, johnny hellweg, tyler thornburg and ariel pena would be bumped to allow fiers and/or peralta to get their work in. if i recall correctly, brewers previously optioned have played in exhibition games at miller park in the past, so why would the rules be any different for exhibition games being played in arizona?
  22. i've acknowledged morris' demotion from major league camp in this thread. the brewers could still decide to purchase his contract by opening day, but if they were still considering doing so, you'd expect that he'd still be in major league camp. it should be noted that sean halton is still in major league camp. like i said, remote chance for either player, and yes, it would likely arise only if more injuries occurred.
  23. i'm definitely not a fan of 13 pitchers to start off the season. some can go unused until 4, 5, 6 or more games into the season, plus it's usual to have more off days and postponed games early on (although the brewers play six at the keg before heading to chicago and st. louis). i realize it burns an option for either player, but i'd feel better about back-of-the-rotation guys like fiers and peralta (even though wily is slated as #3) start off optioned in the minors while the brewers carry more bench players for the initial games of the season—especially when we have the final at-bat in the first six games.
  24. unless the brewers attempt to outright mark rogers or jeff bianchi, i can't see how they'd clear additional roster spots (barring trades). i can't see how the brewers would want to release any other players currently on the 40-man roster. thus, it's likely that the brewers will add no more than two players currently on minor league contracts, and if they add two, it's unlikely that they'd both be pitchers or both be position players. those with a chance to be added to the roster: rhp alfredo figaro rhp donovan hand inf donnie murphy c/1b blake lalli 1b hunter morris or sean halton (chances for either seem remote, but certainly both would not be added) am i missing any other minor leaguers who might be in the mix?
  25. today's release of crosby was quite telling of the brewers' plans for middle infield depth. again, if murphy makes the club over a healthy bianchi, the likely cost is losing bianchi from the organization. that leaves them with very little depth within the organization in the middle infield. unless bianchi lands on the disabled list, i can't see how murphy's contract gets purchased and he makes the 25-man roster.
