  1. it is indeed josh prince. hope it's short term, with ramirez to the disabled list. not official yet.
  2. josh prince (on the 40-man) did start at short last night. if braun is day-to-day but ramirez placed on the 15-day disabled list, prince could provide backup in the outfield and at short, leaving betancourt and gonzalez to man the corners (not necessarily ideal, i know). if taylor green is close to being ready, prince could be a stopgap solution for a few days and optioned when green gets activated. of course, these proposed transactions still leave the brewers with a thirteen-man pitching staff.
  3. green spent his 15th day on the disabled list today. we haven't gotten any indication that he's ready, though.
  4. oh boy. the brewers could be in trouble with their thin bench.
  5. the brewers have many bullpen options that can give them more than one inning a game: chris narveson, alfredo figaro, tom gorzelanny, brandon kintzler and john axford from time to time.
  6. reports are that taylor green was expected to resume baseball activity by now, but he's still sidelined. jeff bianchi is even further behind. if the brewers were to transfer bianchi to the 60-day disabled list, it would allow the brewers to purchase the contract of a position player at nashville (such as lalli or halton). when the brewers decide to revert to a 12-man pitching staff, i don't see many healthy ideal candidates on the 40-man roster ideal to fill out the bench. no healthy candidates have major league experience. one would think that the brewers were counting on green to be ready by this weekend, which is when he'd be eligible to come off the disabled list.
  7. reports are that the brewers are starting with a 13-man pitching staff.
  8. reports are that the brewers will carry a 13-man pitching staff. that means a 4-man bench, unless the brewers sign brooks kieschnick.
  9. on the day lohse signed, the brewers reported selling 34,000 tickets. they usually sell 7000.
  10. discussed elsewhere, but jeff bianchi and taylor green both open the season on the 15-day disabled list. the brewers will carry a bench of 4 or 5 players. assured spots are: yuniesky betancourt, martin maldonado and logan schafer. khris davis, sean halton and blake lalli are still in the mix. the latter two are not on the 40-man roster, which is currently full.
  11. i'm confused as well . . . especially given this report from mass haas.
  12. reports are that he had an opt-out clause. i didn't think a player of his caliber could negotiate such an early opt-out clause.
  13. both corey hart and jeff bianchi have been placed on the 15-day disabled list. both remain on the 40-man roster, and when the deal with yuniesky betancourt becomes official, the 40-man roster will be full. if blake lalli, sean halton, alfredo figaro or donovan hand are to make the club, another player will have to be removed from the 40-man roster, or a player currently on the dl will have to be transferred to the 60-day disabled list. not sure if bianchi's injury warrants such a move.
  14. aoki is under team control for five more seasons. he'll be arbitration-eligible when his current contract expires, but the brewers will still control his rights. in the case of losing hart, one can still hold out hope that 2014 is the year for mat gamel (assuming the brewers deem him worthy of an arbitration-eligible contract). if not, have you been following the careers of sean halton and hunter morris?
  15. part of it is gritty veteran experience. another part of it is already being on the 40-man roster. and another part is the brewers deeming that it's not worth the risk to lose one of the players on the 40-man to make room for sean halton.
  16. donnie murphy signed a minor league deal, meaning he should expect to be playing in the minor leagues. granted, he can ask for his release, now that alex gonzalez and yuniesky betancourt appears locks to make the team, but where would that leave the brewers with depth at shortstop? gonzalez is coming off a season-ending injury and betancourt is betancourt.
  17. boston released him, and the yankees signed him. minor league deal.
  18. if reports of a major league deal are true, yuniesky betancourt takes the 40th spot on the roster.
  19. if bianchi is outrighted to the minors and no team claims him, he can refuse the assignment and become a free agent. when the brewers are seeking the services of the likes of betancourt, do they really want to risk losing bianchi from the organization?
  20. on a positive note, they're signing a free agent . . . not trading unproven talent for a stopgap solution.
  21. bear in mind that this move allows donnie murphy to play at nashville. he'd be just an injury away from being called up. we haven't gotten any indication if murphy has an opt-out clause in his contract if he's not added to the major league roster by a certain date, but a player of his caliber likely wasn't able to negotiate an opt-out clause any earlier than late may/early june.
  22. the roster was at 39 as of this morning. a spot is open for the yuni-bomber (if he does indeed sign a major league contract).
  23. taylor green and mark rogers placed on the 15-day disabled list. they both remain on the 40-man roster.
  24. i took a look at box scores in recent days and gonzalez has been getting time at the other infield positions. lalli's been getting a lot of time at first. maldonado hasn't been getting time at first, but it was reported that during the wbc, he was. i think that given the situation with bianchi (it seems to be a given that he won't be ready by opening day), and the current state of the 40-man, the brewers are backing off on the idea of gonzalez starting at first. i'm against lalli being the starter, but would welcome maldonado getting most of the starts at first . . . especially if green opens the season on the disabled list. however, if the brewers were thinking about maldonado at first, you'd think he'd be getting some time there in these remaining cactus league games.
  25. looking at the current 39 players on the roster, and assuming that rogers, bianchi and green all go on the 15-day disabled list (and not the 60-day), the brewers will need an interim starter at first, a backup at first and a backup to play second/short/third. i don't think the brewers would want to risk losing anybody currently on their 40-man roster to bring both donnie murphy and blake lalli on board. furthermore, with kyle lohse signing, there's a strong possibility that the brewers will go with a 13-man pitching staff until lohse can pitch deep into games. when you slide gonzalez into that starting role at first base, all of the other candidates for backup are not on the 40-man roster, and only one spot remains for positions that cannot be manned by any single player in the organization (one close to being major league ready). when you slide maldonado into the starting role at first base with lalli as the backup, you can get away with gonzalez covering second/short/third, plus you get both his bat and jonathan lucroy's into the starting lineup. the best scenario for the brewers is that if green, bianchi and rogers all open the season on the disabled list, one of them goes on the 60-day disabled list (as suggested above).
