  1. Also, what are the odds that Gordon falls to #5? I'm going to have to ban myself for repeating myself so much on this topic, but I just don't see any way that Gordon fall to the 5th pick. For it to happen he's going to have to get injured like Teixeira in '01, or ask for an absolutely insane signing bonus. Even with Teixeira's injury in '01, I don't think he would have fell to the Rangers with the 5th overall pick had Boras not been his advisor. Gordon is not being advised by Boras, so that shouldn't be an issue. Just get used to the idea that Gordon won't be there. The same goes for Justin Upton.
  2. Interesting matchups for the weekend of 3/25-3/27. I already listed some possible TV games this weekend above. If Georgia Tech and Miami is indeed on TV, be sure to check it out. Georgia Tech has been soaring up the polls lately with an unstoppable offense, while Miami has always been at the top with Ryan Braun and Friday starter Cesar Carillo. #1 Cal State Fullerton and LHP Ricky Romero play Long Beach State this weekend. This should create another exciting matchup on Friday between two exciting college LHPs, which includes the Dirtbags Cesar Ramos. Both Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State offer free audio all season long: www.titansports.org/audio/ontheair.html www.longbeachstate.com/bbo/bbc/ Most other broadcasts aren't free. I fear schools like Cal State Fullerton & Long Beach State will be charging for their online broadcasts next year.
  3. Bell would be an exciting pick in the 3rd round for sure. Here's his profile as part of Brewerfan.net's draft coverage: www.brewerfan.net/ViewAma...&draftId=3 To be honest, I haven't heard a peep about Ryan Mount, and I'm trying to figure out where he came from. I like CA prep 3B/1B Brett Wallace. His body is a little soft, but the guy can hit. He could fall pretty hard given his body type, but he's a guy that is going to hit and hit no matter where he ends up after this year. He's signed with ASU, so he could very well become the next great Sun Devil 3B (oh-oh). Elkins high school's (TX) Carlos Heraud could also be an interesting name in the 3rd round range. he currently plays SS, but a lot of people believe his size will cause him to move to the hot corner at the pro level. He's a good athlete, and some team may give him every opportunity to stay at SS. Good bat. I'll try to refresh my memory tomorrow on some 3B that stand to be good candidates for the 3rd round.
  4. Yup, Brittain covers Virginia now.
  5. Thanks to Brian turning this around so quickly: www.brewerfan.net/ViewSco...raftId=3#5 With the arrival of the Brewers Media Guide I was able to update the scouts and scouting map. This year we have made sure that this page matches the overall look that we're trying to achieve with the new site design, and Brian has added some fancy feature for FireFox browsers. The biggest change is the departure of Jeff Brookens, who previously oversaw PA, VA, MD, DE & WV, and the arrival of Joe Mason, who will scout TN, AL, MS & LA. Some scouting responsibilities have been shifted around, as NE scout Tony Blengino picks up PA & DE, TX scout Ray Montgomery will soley focus on TX now (he used to cover LA as well), Grant Brittain is now scouting WV, MD in addition to NC while not covering SC, Eastern TN & GA anymore, while Douglas Reynolds is focusing his energy on SC, GA and panhandle FL instead of AL, MS and most of TN like he previously covered. Not the most exciting of news, but I find it interesting which scouts are covering what areas. I think having Montgomery focus solely on Texas could be one of the more interesting developments, because the Brewers really haven't drafted & signed a lot of players out of Texas the last several years. We know they have hit Arizona & Florida hard. The scouts in Canada and Latin America have stayed the same.
  6. Zimmerman may very well be a legitimate candidate. As you pointed out, his power production hasn't been ideal for a prototypical 3B, but he has already hit 3 HRs this spring for VA, and I know I keep hearing about how impressed people were with his performance last summer with Team USA, in which he hit .468 with 12 doubles and 4 home runs in 77 ABs with a wood bat. So, he seems to be making the adjustments. Plus, there was this little blurb about Zimmerman's power potential given his swing mechanics from the BA 3B draft notebook that you referred to: With Zimmerman, you have to do some projection. He hasn't hit with a lot of power up to this point but there is looseness and snap in his swing and he showed last summer he can find the barrel consistently with wood. Zimmerman also is arguably the best defensive player in the country." Here's his line for the season so far: .411/.471/.633 in 90 AB, 7 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 9:5 BB:K, 3 Es However, the Brewers have more of a boom or bust mentality when approaching their early draft picks, so as polished as Zimmerman seems, I guess I see them going in a different direction. Bristow is a legitimate candidate to play 3B and be picked #5, and he has to be taken more seriously than what some may give him credit for given Jack Z's preference for athletic, prep players. After Justin Upton and Cameron Maybin, they don't get any more athletic than Bristow. His season started last week, and prep news has been slow to leak out so far this spring. Miami's Ryan Braun may be in the mix by the end of the summer if he keeps hitting like he has so far this spring: .471/.519/.847 in 85 ABs, 8 2B, 8 HR, 11:16 BB:K, 13 for 16 in SBAs, 7 Es Although, there are (and have been) some rumblings that Braun may end up in LF given his defensive shortcomings, as shown by his 7 errors. I've seen him play a few times now, and he's a good athlete, but for some reason he makes a lot of errors. Call it the Rickie Weeks factor, as it may be a case of him not being focused on defense. He has a lot of Nomar-type mannerisms to him, and I don't think there is much question that he is going to hit. It may end after Gordon, I really wish I knew what the Brewers scouting department was thinking about this spring, but there really isn't any evidence that they will change their approach. IMO, I may target someone like Zimmerman, who seems to be a pretty good lock to not only hit, but play very good defense at the hot corner, even if his power is in question. He may never hit in the middle of the order, but he could move up rather quickly, and he could fill the hole at 3B by 2008, maybe late '07.
  7. Is it for sure that Brad Nelson will be in Huntsville? While he didn't have the best of seasons last year, he was the Stars only All-Star, hit a bunch of home runs and had a good chunk of RBIs. I'm not sure if people are just losing patience with him or what, but I would make sure to find a spot for him in the OF since Prince is obviously our 1B of the future. With Nelson Cruz in the system, if one is at AAA the other would be at AA, at least it would seem so to me. Although I wouldn't be surprised to see Nelson traded at some point. He probably would be better suited in the AL anyway, and probably back at 1B like Brian alluded to. Some interesting recent notes overall. Nice to hear about Parra & Rogers pitching, along with Eveland possibly making the jump all of the way to AAA.
  8. I didn't see this mentioned, but the pinch runner for Jenkins was Drew Anderson. He also got an AB, and showed a patient eye that any OBP fan would like. He did K looking on an outside pitch that did grab the corner of the strike zone. Thanks to DHonks for his observations prior to this game. Watching Krynzel & Hendrickson today mirrored what I imagined with those descriptions. I like Krynzel's stance a lot better. With his old stance he looked really stiff and upright. This new stance would seem to allow him to make adjustments better. And I agree with pretty much everyone else already said. Hendrickson's pitches were not fooling anyone, although it always helps when you're throwing strikes, which he obviously wasn't. He really seemed to telegraph his pitches with his new delivery, which seems to have a lot of long, deliberate movements. His curveball is really loopy, and similar to another DHonks observation & comparison to Sheets' young career, he is going to have to tighten that up while throwing strikes with his fastball to have any success. At least he showed a promising curveball today, as I don't remember seeing it when he was up with the big league team late last summer. Plus, watching Hendrickson he just doesn't seem to have that swagger that all big-leaguers have, from the best to the worst players. It could just be my perception, but I wonder how confident he is. He really needs to believe that he belongs out there. I've seen him play briefly before, but I was reminded by how much I like Hardy on D'. He is textbook, and he's going to be a rock in the middle of the infield for years, almost regardless as to what he does at the plate. I think FSN would be pleasantly surprised at how many people would watch the Brewers if they chose to televise more of their games. In fact, I'm surprised that WGN doesn't show more Cubs/White Sox games, or why ESPN doesn't even televise that many games. And I agree, watch on TV, listen to Bob & Jim if you can, even if Darron & Bill are doing the game.
  9. Brian, I believe you had this in the past (and it might still be there for all I know), but you could also include basic facts, such as distance from Milwaukee, directions to the ballpark (or at least a link to directions), etc. So far I like the suggestions. Maybe we could add some testimonies from people that could add some hints such as arriving early, at what time, where to see the minor leaguers, when the best time of ST to go, when the weather starts to really warm up down there, etc.
  10. I lost your email address. Please contact me: pebert@brewerfan.net
  11. Player updates for the week of 3/14/05-3/20/05: It's not even the weekend yet and Nebraska 3B Alex Gordon has had a huge week. The Cornhuskers played three mid-week games against Northern Colorado, with Gordon's hot bat continuing: Tuesday: 3-4, 4 R, 5 RBI, 2 HR, 1 2B, 1 BB, HBP, 1 SB Wednesday: 2-5, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 K Thursday: 3-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 1 HR, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K His line on the year, just 3 games after the most recent update I provided: .424/.575/.881 in 59 ABs, 27 R, 19 RBI, 7 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 18:10 BB:K, 3 HBP, 10-10 SB, 3 Es Yeah, it's Northern Colorado, but wow. As Bill noted in another thread, too bad we can't trade up for this guy. Bill provided a very good pic of Gordon within that thread, but here's another from Nebraska's site: http://huskers.nmn.speedera.net/pics27/200/NJ/NJNXBCWIUEBMOBE.20050315222418.jpg I just got done listening to an amazing pitching duel between Long Beach State LHP Cesar Ramos and Wichita State RHP Mike Pelfrey. Both went the distance, in a game that ended 1-0, with the Dirtbags coming out on top. The run Pelfrey gave up was unearned, while the two pitchers combined to allow only 7 hits, only one of those for extra-bases, one walk, and zero earned runs. The game started at 7pm, and was over by about 9:15pm local time. Mike Pelfrey 9 IP, 3 H, 1 R (0 ER), 11 K, 0 BB Cesar Ramos 9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB I followed up one great pitching performance with another, as Cal State Fullerton LHP Ricky Romero faced Arizona this evening, who received a strong outing from John Meloan (7.2 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 5 K, 4 BB). Unfortunately for talented (and entering todya's game, undefeated) pitcher Ricky Romero, the one run he allowed was one more than John Meloan allowed. Ricky Romero 8 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 8 K, 2 BB Romero was sent out to begin the 9th inning, which marked the 2nd week in a row that CSF's head coach sent Romero out in an inning following a very long offensive inning for the Titans lineup. While Romero walked the leadoff man in the top of the 9th, Vinnie Pestano who relieved Romero got out of the inning without any further damage. If you haven't hopped on the Ricky Romero bandwagon, feel free to do so. I'm steering a light ship here. Oh yeah, I'm not making excuses, just pointing how lethal Arizona's lineup is... They have 3 regulars entering today's game hitting over .400. They have 3 other regulars entering today's game hitting over .350. SS Jason Donald, arguably the best pro prospect on the team (only a sophomore), is hitting .256. RF Jeff Van Houten entered the game with a 28-game hit streak, tied for the longest in school history. Romero ended that streak. In other words, holding the Wild cats to one run is quite the feat. The Titans lineup didn't back him up Romero in this game, as they lose, 0-1. A good night overall for the top college pitchers. Tennessee RHP Luke Hochevar had a no-hitter going into the 9th inning against Auburn in the team's SEC opener. He ended up tossing a complete game 1-hitter, as he also gave up a run in the final frame (on a sac fly). Luke Hochevar 9 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 11 K, 4 BB Baylor RHP Mark McCormick saved his best start of the season against #1 Texas last night. McCormick's stuff has never been in question, but his control and character has been. He pitched a dandy against the Longhorns, with the Bears taking the first two games of the series against the #1 team in the nation. Mark McCormick 7.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 10 K, 1 BB The third game of the series is actually on TV right now (CSTV, channel 118 in Milwaukee for digital cable subscribers). I know there are some Taylor Teagarden fans out there, and you also get to take a peek at CF Drew Stubbs, who could be one of the top players selected in the 2006 draft. Updates for the hitters as of 3/21/05. Fun to look back at last week's post to see how guys have progressed, particularly Gordon, who had a monster week. Alex Gordon .437/.574/.873 in 71 AB, 8 2B, 1 3B, 7 HR, 20:10 BB:K, 11-11 SBs, 2 Es Jeff Clement .308/.471/.600 in 65 AB, 7 2B, 4 HR, 15:12 BB:K, 2 Es Tyler Greene .353/.439/.612 in 85 AB, 6 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 11:17 BB:K, 10-11 SBs, 8 Es Nice to see Clement bump his average up over .300 given my expressed concern about that. I will update the pitcher's season numbers next week. A cool picture of Baylor's Mark McCormick on BA's homepage: http://ftp.baseballamerica.com/images2005/mmccormick450330.jpg
  12. BA's recent draft notebook has come out today, adding some misc. notes and listing the top 10 draft eligible 3B: www.baseballamerica.com/t...ebook.html They have Virginia's Ryan Zimmerman considered as a high-first rounder. I think Zimmerman could be a fine hitter, and as they point out he is one of the finest defensive players in the country and easily the best defensive 3B, but he really hasn't hit for any power at Virginia, as his 4 home runs with Team USA last summer seem to be the reason people consider him a high-first round pick. Either way, again it's nice to see this draft considered to be strong with 3B.
  13. It's a fine line, because at what point do you say it has to stop? If one person provides one little snippet, what prevents the next poster from providing another, and so on and so forth? I think some of the subscriber content from Baseball America may apply more towards this, particularly pertaining to their top prospect lists. As soon as someone paraphrases what BA had to say about Freddy Parejo in the Arizona League, what is preventing them from paraphrasing what is said about Adam Mannon in the Pioneer League? And it's different from using the generic examples to a book, movie, play, etc. because we have friends at places like BP & BA. I don't mean to say that either place has ever said anything to us, because they haven't as far as I know, but to me it's really out of respect and courtesy to them and to the people that spend their hard-earned money to be subscribers. If it's a small blurb, I have no problem with it, and I didn't see the specific instance in which you're referring to. But I know I have encountered the same situation Brian did, and when dealing with a grey area, I also lean towards the side of caution.
  14. Junior Corporan probably isn't related/connected to Carlos, since Carlos is Puerto Rican and all Puerto Ricans are subject to the draft. That means they can't sign as free-agents, unless they go undrafted. Perfect Game and the WWBA had 3 different Jose Jimenez' listed, and all of them were '05 grads from Florida.
  15. Baseball America's College weekend preview for the weekend of 3/18-3/20: www.baseballamerica.com/t...eview.html Some interesting matchups to tune into for the weekend, including a few rare TV games. Ricky Romero and Cal State Fullerton have yet another tough assignment this weekend as they face #9 Arizona. All of Cal State Fullerton's broadcasts are free through their site: www.titansports.org/audio/ontheair.html Long Beach State LHP Cesar Ramos will face off vs. Wichita State RHP Mike Pelfrey. All of the Dirtbags' games can be accessed via their website (click the link on the right-side of the page): www.longbeachstate.com/bbo/bbc/ On the TV side of things, #1 Texas faces Baylor this Sunday, a game that will be televised by the College Sports TV network (CSTV). For local (Milwaukee) residents, this station can be found for TW digital cable subscribers on channel 118. The Texas/Baylor game will be played at 1:00 pm central time, and I believe there are several re-broadcasts over the course of next week in case you miss it. This Friday you can watch Florida State kick off their ACC schedule vs. Virginia Tech at 5:00 pm CST on FCSP (Fox College Sports Pacific), which I believe is channel 109 for local digital cable subscribers. Again, more replays of this contest as the weekend continues. More upcoming televised games include: Tuesday, 3/22, Auburn at Georgia Tech, 6:00 pm, FCSA (Fox College Sports Atlantic (channel 107). Georgia Tech has some very good players to watch, and Auburn has a few of their own. I may preview this game in greater detail early next week. Wednesday, 3/23, Central Florida at Florida, 11:00 am, FSCA. Florida is currently ranked #6 by BA, and Central Florida has a few intriguing players to watch, including defensive standout, catcher Drew Butera. Saturday, 3/26, Georgia Tech at Miami, noon, FCSA. Checking the TV schedule online, I can't tell if the rest of the games from this weekend series will be televised. This game as listed must be the Friday night game, as the Saturday game doesn't start until 3:00 pm. There are several replays over the course of the weekend, so the entire series, or at least more than one game from this series, may be televised. GT vs. Miami should provide for a VERY interesting matchup.
  16. By now most high school seasons should be underway. I know a lot of high schools in the northeast to east kicked off their seasons yesterday (Justin Upton & Justin Bristow in particular). I received the most recent issue of BA yesterday, and they already have posted their first HS player of the year feature. Cameron Maybin got the spotlight to start the season, and is a perfect 3 for 3 with a HR in an extremely miniscule sample size. Most impressive of the names on the list is Colby Rasmus from Seale, Alabama, who already has 10 home runs on the young season in 44 ABs. His 44 ABs were more than double the next highest person on the list. As for pitchers, Florida righty Chris Volstad has 20 strikeouts in 12 innings of work so far this year, giving up only 3 hits and 1 walk. Anyway, hopefully we'll start to hear more & more news leak out from the prep side of amateur baseball. Here's BA's most recent HS POY feature: www.baseballamerica.com/t...05poy.html And Alan Matthews HS notebook, with comments on Volstand, Bradley Clark among others (all of these links contain free BA content): www.baseballamerica.com/t...notes.html
  17. wasn't speculating as to who would be available, as to just expounding my excitement over who is going to be there for us to pick from. 10-4 Ryan, and I agree. I like the possibilities for our first-rounder. Even if Gordon isn't there, we should still have a good shot at a really good player. And while I brought up the possbility of a pitcher, I do believe the Brewers' pick will be a positional prospect. Although with all of the talk of a college hitter, outside of Maybin and Upton, it's important to remember that the Brewers under Jack Z. have taken a HS player four out of five years in the first round. I think Justin Bristow makes a lot sense for our pick as well. Back to Clement, one thing that has been bothering me lately, and actually has been during his career at USC (and his stints with Team USA), is his inability to hit for a higher batting average. He has the power, no doubt, and he has the plate discipline, but he hasn't hit .300 during his first two seasons, and he still is hitting under .300 to begin this year. Yes, there is plenty of time left during this season for him to turn that around, and I know he has been getting pitched around an awful lot so far this year, but so is Alex Gordon, and he has adjusted to that. I guess I wanted to see Clement get off to a fast start this season, although he has had a few big games. With all of the questions about Clement's D' I think Clement's bat may have some serious questions as well.
  18. Matheny sucks. Always has. Its only against Milwaukee that he can hit. He has a career OPS of .629. Against Milwauke over the past three seasons hit he had an OPS of .903. Yeah, he has our number, but I can never say that Matheny sucks. He may stink offensively, but he's one of those guys that earns his keep defensively. He's a treat to watch play, and as hard-nosed as they come. And, IIRC, didn't Matheny go play in Toronto for a year or two before heading to St. Louis? ***I just checked, he sure did, in 1999. And it was Brad Nelson that hit the 3-run HR. Just because he was sent down to minor league camp doesn't mean he can't get called up to play with the big league team when they need the bodies. There are quite a few young guys with the Brewers tonight, including Grant Richardson and Steve Sollmann according to Powell.
  19. Here are the ones we know for sure: Luke Hochevar-RHP-Tennessee Mike Pelfrey-RHP-Wichita State Tyler Greene-SS-Georgia Tech Mark McCormick-RHP-Baylor Jason Neighborgall-RHP-Georgia Tech We probably won't hear about the HS ones for quite some time, as this kind of info doesn't leak out so easily, and many people think (especially parents of the players themselves) that this information really is nobody's business. Although we did know that Pelfrey, McCormick and Neighborgall were all Boras advisees coming out of high school. Hochevar, Pelfrey & Greene are all top-10 players overall.
  20. Chris already touched upon this, but teams really don't draft for need Ryan. As much as it may look as though the D-Backs, Royals and Mariners are set at third base (with the Nationals being the wild-card as you pointed out), they're not going to pass on someone of Gordon's talents just because they may have immediate needs elsewhere. While I don't like calling the draft a crap-shoot, because I don't believe the process is ONLY chalked up to dumb-luck, anything can and will happen to these players between the time they're drafted and the end of their professional careers. That may mean some never make it to the big-leagues, some never make it past AA, some only have a cup of coffee, and some may not play the position they were originally drafted at. That's where the best player available philosophy comes in. That's why the Brewers drafted Prince Fielder when Richie Sexson, Corey Hart and Brad Nelson were already in the organization. Trying to piece together a future lineup through the draft is how the Brewers struck out drafting Ken Felder, Antone Williamson and Chad Green. It's possible that Gordon falls to us, but no matter how you try to look at it, at this point in time it's not very likely. And while it would be nice to shore up the rest of our lineup/infield, you can never have too many pitchers.
  21. Colby, I know it is a bit too early to predict but why do you see us taking Clement over someone like Alex Gordon? Because if Gordon continues to play anywhere close to how he's played over the last year, he won't be available at #5.
  22. DFE player updates as of 3/14/05 Dustin Timm 1-0, 3.09 ERA, 5 G/0 GS, 11.2 IP, 9 H, 6 K, 4 BB, 0 HR, .231 BAA Ryan Patterson 0-1, 7.00 ERA, 3 G/1 GS, 9 IP, 5 H, 9 K, 5 BB, 4 HBP Stephen Barnes 3-2, 2.44 ERA, 8 G/7 GS, 44 IP, 31 H, 32 K, 19 BB, 2 HR, .182 BAA Brandon Jasper .257/.350/.457 in 35 AB, 3 2B, 2 3B, 4:13 BB:K, 5 Es Jon Mungle 2 strikeouts in his only 2 ABs of the season, played in only 1 game Derek Miller 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 G/1 GS, 5 IP, 2 H, 6 K, 3 BB Shane Buriff 3-1, 2.92 ERA, 8 G/5 GS, 2 saves, 24.2 IP, 16 H, 17 K, 14 BB, 0 HR Chad Miller .337/.354/.500 in 86 AB, 5 2B, 3 HR, 3:6 BB:K
  23. I too disagree that it was a bad loss. Before Pratt entered the game, the Brewers were in control, and even when Pratt got knocked around the offense still fought back. I was particularly encouraged by the performances of Corey Hart & Brad Nelson. It was nice to hear them finally producing. And I don't buy that we should have knocked them around more since they were fielding a split squad. Brad Halsey & Edgar Gonzalez, two of their more talented, young pitchers, were the two guys we knocked around the most today.
  24. Thanks for the kind words Peavey. When I spoke with Clement for my interview with Perfect Game, I also had the opportunity to briefly talk with some people that are involved with USC's baseball program, and they think a lot of what is made out of Clement's defense is overblown, and you can tell that Clement gets asked the questions about his defense quite a bit. Baseball America doesn't help, as they keep bringing up little blurbs that Clement may be an AL-only player, although Allan Simpson has stated in a recent chat that Clement is a full-time catcher. But your guesses are correct. There aren't any issues with his arm. The concerns surrounding his defense focus on his game-calling skills and some intangible aspects of the game. Here's a nice thread that talks about Clement in greater detail, along with a link to my interview with the USC backstop. He's really a nice, down to earth guy, and probably my most favorite interview target to date (along with Roy Clark, scouting director of the Braves). p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...=705.topic I just have a gut feeling that Clement will be our pick come June. I'm not trying to jinx it, because Clement isn't necessarily my favorite player available, but he just seems to make sense for the Brewers.
  25. Player updates for the week of 3/7-3/13 I brought up the Ricky Romero/Brian Bogusevic, #3 Cal State Fullerton/#1 Tulane matchup this evening. After 7 innings the Titans lead 8-1. As you can guess, Romero had the better performance of the two talented lefties. Both are out of the game at this time. (Cal State Fullerton keeps scoring runs in the 8th, as the game is now 10-1, and Tulane isn't out of the inning yet). Ricky Romero 6.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 2 BB Brian Bogusevic 6 IP, 10 H, 6 ER, 9 K, 1 BB I also brought up the Mike Pelfrey/Chris Nicoll matchup. Neither one pitcher particularly well, but Pelfrey hasn't exactly looked stellar so far this year. Mike Pelfrey 6 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 4 K, 2 BB Chris Nicoll 6 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 5 K, 3 BB Luke Hochevar faced Radford today, and had a rough fifth inning. While he gave up 5 runs, all earned, the Volunteers rallied behind him in a large way, beating Radford 25-5. Luke Hochevar 6 IP, 11 H, 5 ER, 9 K, 1 BBs Some of the more notable position prospects have had big weekends so far. Alex Gordon went 6 for 6 today in a doubleheader, and he reached base in 8 out of 8 PAs with 2 BBs to go along with those 6 hits. He also scored 5 runs, drove in 4 runs, hit a double, a home run and stole 2 bases. Not a bad day...that performance followed up a measley one for three evening on Friday in which he hit a RBI double, scored a run and drew a walk. Jeff Clement hit two HRs on Friday vs. Texas Tech. In the game he was 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and a BB. He pushed his batting average on the season up to .300, and has 12 walks vs. 6 Ks on the young season. Tyler Greene hit an inside the part grand slam on Friday night against Wake Forest. If you can think of a more exciting play in baseball, I'd like to hear about it. On the night he was 2 for 5 with 5 RBI. Greene went 1 for 6 on Saturday. While not one of the top prospects for this June's draft, Georgia Tech OF/DH Jeremy Slayden continues to stay hot after missing most of last season. Today he drove in six runs with a HR (his 6th) and a double (his 5th), going 2 for 3 overall with a BB and a HBP.
