  1. This point has been talked about before concerning Corey Hart, but if Alfonso Soriano is an All-Star, so is Corey Hart, who put up numbers last year extremely similar to Soriano's. I think his selection alone warrants a higher grade from 2000, even if no one else panned out from that draft. That's what makes grading drafts extremely tough, because for the most part, if you do get one solid, successful big-leaguer from a draft, whether it be your first-round pick or your 11th rounder, it still has to be viewed successful.
  2. Thanks X, for whatever reason I thought Dominguez was a true sophomore. And Cardinals31, it's hard to argue with the players you took where you selected them.
  3. I don't think we see Gamel this year unless its as DH I'm not sure if this was in response to my comment on promotions, but I wasn't suggesting that the Brewers promote Gamel, or Escobar to Milwaukee, but to AAA Nashville.
  4. Braddock's start today was especially exciting in that he opposed Vero Beach starter Jeremy Hellickson, one of the Rays' top prospects and a pitcher that I believe shut down the Power twice last year during the South Atlantic League playoffs. You're sure to see Braddock's name mentioned during BA's prospect pulse roundup on Monday. Overall, three intriguing lefties on the mound this evening, although only Braddock had an inspiring start. Hammond's been rock solid up to tonight's game, while Merklinger is still a darkhorse IMO to make some strong impressions as the season progresses. I can't wait to see who gets promoted mid-June. You'd have to think that Gamel is candidate #1 the way he's swinging the bat, unless the Brewers want to keep him at AA to work on his D'. Escobar is also deserving since many of us felt he could have opened the season at AAA, and his increase in power may be the most exciting storyline among all Brewers minor leaguers. Lucroy is another obvious candidate, especially since he's more polished than most low-A ballers, the Power aren't in the hunt for the first-half playoffs while the Manatees are, with no one at BC blocking Lucroy (unless you're the biggest Andy Bouchie fan out there).

  9. ROUND 47: Kayvon Bahramzadeh - RHP 6'2", 190, R/R, Catalina Foothills HS (AZ) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/kayvon_bahramzadeh.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Bahramzadeh has a good, projectable build, with strong, athletic proportions. He is a talented two-way player that has some power potential at the plate to go along with an improving arm. He throws in the upper-80s at this point in time with a slurvy breaking ball that shows good bit and upper-70s velocity. At this point in time draft, it may be difficult to sign him away from his commitment to Kansas State. NOTES & INFO: Has Scholarship offer to Kansas State NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  10. ROUND 48: Marcus Salmon - RHP - SIGNED 6'3", 220, R/R, Miami Dade CC South BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Salmon has a strong and sturdy build, and came out of high school known more for his abilities as a sturdy backstop with a cannon for an arm. His arm strength has led to him being used more as a pitcher, with the ability to sit in the low-90s. His offspeed stuff is a work in progress, but he has shown the ability to spin a promising breaking ball. He could be a candidate to be a short reliever down the road, but may opt to pursue his commitment to Jackson State. NOTES & INFO: Previously drafted, Washington, Round 10, 2006 Has scholarship to Jackson State. Marcus Salmon Stats NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  11. ROUND 49: Dan Meadows - LHP - SIGNED 6'6", 230, L/L, Temple Junior College (TX) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/dan_meadows.jpg (Photo by Rebekah Workman/Temple Telegram) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Meadows has very good size for a left-handed pitcher, and very good athleticism. He was a promising two-way star in high school, with a very good swing made for loft power. His stuff has improved since attending college, going from the mid-80s to the upper 80s. He spins a pretty good breaking ball and knows how to pitch, and while he has the ability to strike batters out, he can be hittable. Keeping away from Texas Tech for his junior year of eligiblity may be tough. NOTES & INFO: Dan Meadows Stats Has scholarship to Texas Tech. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  12. ROUND 50: Sean Nolin - LHP 6'4", 235, L/L, Seaford HS (NY) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/sean_nolin.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Nolin, like Dan Meadows, has a very large frame for a left-handed pitcher. He is physically matured at 235 pounds, but there are some concerns that he'll have to keep an eye on his conditioning. He throws in the upper-80s and commands his fastball well. His big-breaking slow curve sits in the low-70s, and he also throws a changeup to keep hitters off balance. As a 50th round pick, he may be more inclined to honor his college commitment to San Jacinto, a junior college known for developing young pitchers. NOTES & INFO: Committed to play for San Jacinto Junior College. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Sean Nolin Article
  13. ROUND 42: Ryan Wood - SS 6'4", 175, R/R, East Carolina Univ. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/ryan_wood.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Wood was a very promising prospect coming out of high school, with intriguing talents both as a hitter and as a pitcher. He has played the infield exclusively since joining East Carolina, and has good power potential given his tall and wiry strong frame. He is willing to work the count, but also has the tendency to strike out given his approach and long swing. He may have to move to either second base or third down the road, but he has good athletic actions and a strong arm. Should he fail as a hitter, there's a chance he could be developed as a pitcher with a low-90s fastball and potential hammer curve. NOTES & INFO: Ryan Wood Stats Previously drafted, Cleveland, Round 49, 2005 NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Ryan Wood Profile Ryan Wood Draft Story
  14. ROUND 43: Dexter Price - RHP 6'6", 200, R/R, Air Academy HS (CO) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/dexter_price.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Tall and angular athlete that was thought to be a better hitting prospect entering the spring as a powerful first baseman, but started to draw more and more attention for his ability on the mound. He has improving stuff, going from the mid-80s a year ago to the upper 80s this spring. He might be tough to pry away from his Auburn commitment. NOTES & INFO: Dexter Price Stats Has committed to play for Auburn NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Dexter Price Bio
  15. ROUND 44: Kaleb Herren - RHP 6'2", 190, R/R, North Central Texas College http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/kaleb_herren.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Herren is a big-bodied athlete that has played third base for most of his college career. His frame leads to exciting power potential at the plate, but the Brewers have drafted Herren as a right-handed pitcher to take advantage of his power arm. They may have difficulty signing him as he has committed to play for the Sooners for his junior year of eligiblity. NOTES & INFO: Has commitment to play at the University of Oklahoma NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Kaleb Herren Profile
  16. ROUND 45: James Kottaras - 2B 5'9", 165, L/R, Milliken Mills HS (Canada) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/james_kotteras.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Kottaras is a shorter high energy player that makes the most out of his limited upside. He is a sound defender on the infielder with good range, footwork, soft hands and a strong throwing arm. He profiles better at second base due to the lack of ideal range for the shortstop position. He has a good eye at the plate and a line drive bat, and while he has surprising pop for his size, he will never be considered a power threat. NOTES & INFO: Younger brother of former Padre and current Red Sox farmhand, catcher George Kottaras NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  17. ROUND 46: Carlos George - SS - SIGNED 6'2", 160, R/R, James Monroe HS (NY) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/carlos_george.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: George has a very thin, slight build but does have broad shoulders and wiry strong limbs that lead many to believe he will be able to put on muscle mass as he continues to mature and work out. He has very fluid, quick-twitch actions at shortstop with a strong arm and above average range. He is very raw at the plate and needs to work on his swing and overall mechanics. If he signs he's has a high ceiling, but will need to be given plenty of patience to develop. NOTES & INFO: NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  18. ROUND 37: Kyle Winkler - RHP 5'10", 180, R/R, Kempner HS (TX) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/kyle_winkler.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Winkler has very good stuff for a sub-six foot pitcher, with a fastball that can touch 93 while sitting in the 89-92 range. He has a very nice repertoire that includes a slow mid-70s curveball, sharp slider that sits in the low-80s and promising changeup, all of which he's able to command fairly well, knowing how to change speeds. Keeping him away from TCU will be no easy task. NOTES & INFO: Has scholarship to TCU Lowest ERA - 2006 Pan Am Championship No-hitter at 2007 Perfect Game Wood Bat Tournament in Atlanta NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  19. ROUND 38: Michael Roberts - C - SIGNED 6'2", 185, R/R, Virginia Military Institute http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/michael_roberts.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Roberts is a tough, physical catcher behind the plate with good athleticism and quickness. His game is highlighted by his arm strength and his quick release. He's a hard worker, and continues to improve his game-calling skills by working intently with his pitching staff. He has a line drive bat with some pop and a knack for driving in big runs, but he probably will never hit for a high average. NOTES & INFO: College battery-mate of ninth rounder Michael Bowman. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Roberts drafted by Brewers
  20. ROUND 39: Eric Decker - LF 6'2", 210, L/L, Univ. of Minnesota http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/eric_decker.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Decker is a fine all-around athlete that stars on the football field for the Golden Gophers and has legitimate NFL promise as a wide receiver. That athleticism translates well to the baseball field, although his overall game is raw since he didn't play baseball prior to this spring since high school. With very good speed he projects to be a threat on the basepaths and can cover ground in the outfield. He has potential with the bat, with a good lefty swing that projects to hit for more power when and if he focuses more on baseball. He's a very intriguing prospect, but one that will be difficult to sway away from the gridiron. NOTES & INFO: Eric Decker Stats A two-sport star that is one of the best wide receivers in the Big Ten. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Eric Decker Profile
  21. ROUND 40: Nicholas Fogarty - LHP 6'1", 215, R/L, Thorniea SS (Canada) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/nicholas_fogarty.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Fogarty's stock slipped this spring when his velocity dipped to the mid-80s despite throwing around 90 in the past. He has a very good curveball and a promising changeup, and has shown the ability to change speeds and hit his spots. He is on the short and stocky side, so conditioning may be a concern down the road. Fogarty could elect to return to high school for grade 13 to improve his stock instead of going to college. NOTES & INFO: May return to high school, as Canada has the option for high school seniors to return for a 13th grade. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  22. ROUND 41: Joseph Scott - SS 6'0", 185, R/R, Cal State Fullerton http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/joseph_scott.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Scott was drafted by the Brewers last year in the 39th round, but decided to return to Cal State Fullerton. He hasn't received as much playing time this year as he has struggled somewhat at the plate, but his calling card is his versatility and his defense. He has very good range and a strong arm and the ability to play second base, third and shortstop. He profiles as a utility player at the next level, and while he's not a threat at the plate, he is a good situational hitter than hits for contact. NOTES & INFO: Joe Scott Stats Drafted by the Brewers in the 39th round of the 2007 draft. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Joe Scott Profile
  23. ROUND 31: Brandon Rapoza - RHP - SIGNED 6'2", 220, R/R, Flagler College (FL) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/brandon_rapoza.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Rapoza spent his first two years in college at Tallahassee Community College before transferring to Flagler College. He started his junior year in the starting rotation before being moved to the team's closer, a role he spent his entire senior year with very good results. He is a big-bodied short reliever with a powerful fastball. He can struggle with control, but when he is throwing strikes he is hard to hit. NOTES & INFO: Brandon Rapoza Stats NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: Brandon Rapoza Profile
  24. ROUND 32: Colt Farrar - RHP 6'3", 200, R/R, First Baptist Academy (TX) http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/2008%20Draftees/colt_farrar.jpg BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Farrar is a good overall athlete that shows some ability to swing the bat. As a pitcher, he has a solid repertoire and sound pitching mechanics with a clean and easy delivery. His fastball sits in the 85-88 range at this point in time, but many believe the velocity will increase as he matures. He also throws a sharp slow curveball and really shows an advanced understanding of pitching. He may be difficult to sign away from Texas Tech. NOTES & INFO: Committed to play for Texas Tech. NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE:
  25. ROUND 33: Michael White - RHP 6'6", 190, R/R, Anderson County HS (TN) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: White is a tall and lanky righty with plenty of future projection for him to improve. His game right now is a little rough around the edge, but he does continue to add velocity on his upper-80s fastball. The Brewers intend to follow White over the course of the summer before deciding whether or not to make White an offer to join the system. NOTES & INFO: Committed to play for Walter State JC (TN). NEWSPAPER AND WEB COVERAGE: White excited by selection
