  1. I'm not going to be too hard on Mota, I will -- He is practically walking one batter per inning. He has Vargased himself out of some jams, but overall, he is pretty crappy. Mota walked 18 guys last year, he's walked 10 already in 2008 -- if that happens a lot longer, he will be sporting a 7-8 ERA.
  2. But Eric's looked good so far, I think he has looked inconsistent.
  3. What really gets me is that all 4 umps are too arrogant to even consider overturning the play. I dont think that they can. The home plate ump needs to watch the ball to make sure it stays fair -- so I am pretty sure they cant overturn it
  4. My only negativity these days is towards JJ Hardy and the free ride he gets compared to all the bashing of Hall and Weeks. Agreed. Someone should start a thread.
  5. I think you should actually prove that anything I've said is inaccurate before throwing that around. You said this: Really, this should be a discussion forum. It is undisputed fact that this should be Arby's
  6. Murcer had an OPS of +180. Murcer played more of his career with the yanks than Paul O'Neil did.
  7. Wow, he looks like he was a bad you-know-what. Yeah -- The Boomer was a great ball-player -- and he was the best fielding 1b in the game. I have met him a couple of times after his career was over, and he is a non-stop talker. He told some kid he got those teeth out of pitchers' mouth. This was my most prized card as a kid http://i17.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/e3/01/fb1a_1.JPG So Im guessing this was modern era Yankees only? I see no Ruth, Mantle, Maris, Dimaggio and so on. No, those guys sucked http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Yes, he was limited to 1970 and on because that was when the BRewers came into existence. Is he aware of Bobby Murcer?
  8. A run is worth $1000? You lost me FTJ Runs are awesome, they help you win games.
  9. http://www.checkoutmycards.com/CardImages/Cards/012/545/02F.jpg
  10. If I found $1000 in my couch, that would be lucky. However, I'd be foolish to quit my job and expect to find another $1000 in my couch next week. the $1000 would rock though.
  11. Really, if someone can point me to a piece that says that runs are worthless and should never be used to value someone, please do so. STRAWMAN! No one has remotely suggested than runs are worthless, or that they shouldn't be used. Weeks inability to get on base as well as he should, is in a large part to his craptacular BA. You shouldn't use runs to argue Weeks is doing his job getting on base, you should use OBP, which he is currently 63rd in the NL.
  12. Who backs up catcher? With this offense I dont think it matters.... Simba's going to catch 162. George Scott would also work over Sexson, but Richie was no slouch with the glove either. Boomer won like 6 GGs in a row, he was the man, and he wore a shark tooth necklace. I'd probably ope for 1972ish Bobby Murcer over Bernie Williams, Murcer was a beast.
  13. It sounds like you're trying to educate me. That's not neccessary. You mean "necessary" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif -- and you consistently use "than" when you should be using "then" The way I read your post, was that you were giving credit Weeks for his runs, and I see that as largely good luck for Weeks. Players who score a lot of runs do so because they get on base and because they hit in front of good hitters. Or they are fortunate. Rickie is providing value because he gets on base. He is 63rd in the NL in OBP, if you want to throw him a party for that -- have at it. I think he should be scoring more runs. Again, if you look at the people with similar OBPs, they have about half the runs that Weeks has -- I don't think it is because Weeks does anything better than those dudes, rather he is sitting in front some good hitters. It's hard to find players who score a lot of runs that aren't providing value. Agreed. I don't think Weeks is void of value, however he is not getting on base as well as he should, coupled with his poor D -- if he continues hitting at a .198 clip, he isn't long for the league. Saying that runs are a bad way to judge Weeks, when it his job to get on base so that he can score runs, just seems weird I believe that BA is a better judge of a players performance than runs or RBIs. That is to say -- I don't think you make a good argument against someone using BA when you present runs as an alternate data set.
  14. I posted this in the Hill thread -- moving it here... I don't know if you look at anything besides BA, but Weeks has scored 19 runs in 21 games. Another way to look at this is that Weeks has more runs than hits. Kind of puts BA in perspective, doesn't it? Runs are probably a worse data set to use for Weeks than BA. Weeks leads the NL in runs at the moment -- however most of the cats that are in the top ten in runs, are also in the top ten in total bases -- which makes sense. Chase Utley & Derrek Lee are mashing the ball and getting closer to scoring runs by hitting a lot of 2bs and HRs than other players in the NL. Weeks, on the other hand is around 70th in TBs which indicates to me he is getting a lot of help from his teammates getting around the bases. It is sort of like RBI's -- runs a largely a team stat and a function of where you hit in the lineup. If Weeks has more runs than hits -- that probably means Braun/Fielder have gotten their hits when he is on base. Weeks isn't a terrible player -- but he won't be around long in MLB with his crappy D, if he bats .200 for extended periods of time.
  15. Yeah -- I agree with JB12 -- I'd bump Hardy & Surhoff and add Hisle/Scott
  16. The other argument was Rivera vs. Fingers. Gossage was probably better than Fingers in the 70s and 80s. (Especially 1981)
  17. I'd opt for George Scott, (he won 2 legs of the triple crown in 1975) over Sexson -- Multiple GG winner as well. Their OPS+ is the same. Plus the Boomer wore a shark tooth necklace. Interesting that Gorman Thomas isn't on the team. EDIT: -- I'd put Boomer on over Hardy, and let Molitor/Money back up SS. I remember Guidry's 1978 season, and he was incredibly filthy. I remember Caldwell giving him one of his three losses.
  18. I would have pinch hit with Counsell instead of Gwynn but the difference between the two isn't nearly big enough to worry about. I agree -- It sucks though you have to chose between those 2 for PHing.
  19. I wonder sometimes if teams don't frantically hang onto the "closer" concept, because it sells t-shirts. If a team has a closer like Gagne (in his prime), or even Turnbow (2005), it fires up that crowd to see that closer take the mound. People stick around for the ninth, buy more things, leave the park on a positive note. I am guessing Trevor Hoffman's Hells Bells works better in the 9th than in the 7th.
  20. Just think how much you'll accomplish in that time now that you don't have to watch us "get killed". Yeah -- you could troll message boards, and leave people snarky replies, whenever something doesn't sit right with you -- however -- it would be better in the future to list a number of things one could do.
  21. I understand Sheets' importance to the team, but if keeping him off the DL (retroactively) causes us to lose a game because we don't have enough bench players, I start to wonder about the logic of not making a roster move. I think if Sheets misses 2 starts it was a bad move not to DL him.
  22. They needed Bush to go as long as he could. He was at 100 pitches before the 7th. They needed him to get one or two outs in the 7th, but he couldn't do that. I think if this was truly the case, he would have faced more batters. But since there were two outs and considering the way Hamels was pitching at the time, Even more reason to let a guy with thousands of ABs take a hack over Bush. letting Bush hit wasn't the worst non-move in the world. No one ever said it was, it was simply a move I didn't agree with.
  23. You can't burn through everyone by the 6th inning. Using Rivera or Counsell to hit there is not "burning through everyone". I understand the ridiculous nature of having 14 pitchers on a roster, which makes it hard for Yost to use PHers, but he could have used Counsell there to PH for sure. He definitely had choices. If Bush had been pitching well, I would understand leaving him in -- but with runners on base, letting Bush hit was silly. (IMO)
  24. Glad to be at a place where some understand why they had no choice in that situation. I disagree. Counsell has pretty even splits against RHers and LHers, -- as much as Counsell is a PHing solution -- it's not as if he has extreme splits (like Gross). Counsell PHing would have been better than letting Bush hit and then giving up the 2b to Werth in the 7th Only right handed bat in the dugout last night was Rivera, and you especially can't go with your backup catcher that early in the game. I don't agree here either. As I mentioned before Counsell is pretty similar against RHP or LHP, and would have been an upgrade over Bush, and Yost is pretty ridiculous about not playing his backup catcher. Stetter ended up pitching 2 innings, so it is not as if the pitching matchups were that critical.
  25. I still think the Kearns trade was really, really bad ... as will be the signing of Cordero. I think you are letting your personal prejudices about signing relievers to multi-year contracts cloud your opinion a bit. Given how insanely bad the Reds pitching was last year, signing CoCo and Affeldt and trading for Volquez -- were pretty solid moves. They may not work out, but they are certainly not head-scratchers IMO. I don't think the Kearns/Lopez deal was that bad either -- Neither one of those players has done too much for Washington. I think you can safely say that Krivsky left the Reds in better shape than the Bowden/O'Brien days.
