  1. i hate bagels. i've always hated bagels. they don't taste like the thing they're allegedly flavored as. how has this thread (already) spiraled into an inman/padres/minrs/majors crap-ola? read the first post. then again, chaos was invited, so, in a way it's not out of line for the thread to take a turn completely away from the title. but yeah, see jazzytrav's comment. wiggum got it right, the rest of you? you're doing it wrong.
  2. i know we've got a thread for "things too pointless to say elsewhere", and this is not intended to be a clone. rather, i'm hoping that this thread can be used by those of us - please note the use of "our" in the title and "us" in this sentence to note that i'm being inclusive, not exclusive - who sometimes feel the need to add generally pointless or valueless trinkets onto otherwise solid discussions. how does this differ from the other "pointless" thread? the idea is this: next time you have the urge to laud tony gwynn in a mike-cameron-is-slumping thread or to let everyone know that you work too far from work to bike via the "bike to work week" thread, instead, put that thought here. by doing this, i believe we can accomplish two things: 1) we stop annoying our fellow posters with off-the-path opinion. i needn't point out the disdain for this sort of thing. 2) we create a sort of "cut-up" (william burroughs-style) thread composed of thoughts that might only be trivially or marginally related, a world where one reply need not say anything about any of the previously-expressed ideas in the thread. i hope this idea can be embraced, for both of the above reasons. i personally hate reading people's completely pointless "throw-in" comments (do you do this just to drive up your post count?), and i'll be interested to read a thread that is actually intended to be confusing.
  3. oh, how i miss the bike. for those of you talking walker's point biking, i highly recommend second street going to and from downtown. the downfall of second is that the street is in shoddy condition around national, but traffic is minimal and you can ride it (or first) basically from st. paul to south milwaukee.
  4. all of one day later, here's the sporting news/yahoo combining for yet another shoddy, if not completely pointless brewers bashing story. why is there anything worth saying about cameron's suspension now? he never made a big deal about it, doesn't have a history of problems, appeared to have worked hard in his time off, and he came to play when the suspension ended. who cares if he may have stayed in a $100 a night hotel on his rehab stint? is it his fault he makes millions of dollars? would he really be showing some character if he was to "slum it" by sleeping on some career AAA type's couch for the week? so devoid of content - is there really such a dearth of worthwhile story material in the majors right now? edit: title
  5. i have a friend who calls the morning he wants to go to the game to see about seats. apparently player and ump leftovers are released the morning of the game for sale. when we can get them, these are usually good seats (expensive, obviously). aside from that i don't know the ticket sales practices, though teams are allowed to call a game a "sellout" after a certain number of tickets are sold, which does not necessarily indicate that there are no more tickets available. since everyone loves to offer their unsolicited opinions in these cases, i recommend getting familiar with a few of the scalpers. buy from them for a few of mid-week games when you can get seats from them for face or less and they'll hook it up when they can for bigger games. it's no guarantee, but i've benefited from it multiple times.
  6. a freelance writer for the sporting news (from st. louis, mind you) has nothing good to say about the brewers recent showing. ever the optimist i can't say i blame the critique. this ship needs righting, though he does merely point to the obvious (turnbow, gagne, yo-ga) black eyes, and neglects to point to things like the brewers' offense not yet having hit stride at anything close to their potential. frankly, it's par for the course as far as yahoo.com sports writing goes. Edit: fixed link
  7. superficially, this quote sums up my feelings on the wave pretty succinctly. alas, my hatred for the wave is much more passionate than a single quote can encompass. there are few things i hate more than when i'm already basting and bronzing, patiently waiting for braun to hit one into my section of the left field bleachers, than for some uppity wankers with their shirts tied around their heads to start lambasting my and the neighboring section about starting the wave. i allow and agree that both baseball and the wave can be very entertaining for drunk people, children and novices alike, and that is why stadiums have upper decks. frankly, i have even thought it cute to see 7,000 youngsters in neon t-shirts doing the wave all the way from section 410-440, it's a nice distraction during a pitching change - and you'd have to be a cubs fan not to think it's cute when the child chorus actually gets a substantial "here we go brewers" cheer going (we're talking thursday afternoon games here). i might even think it cute for a kid to try to start the wave a few times, but as has been mentioned prior, a parent ought to curtail that attempt after a half dozen attempts or so, it loses it's novelty after 200 or 300 repetitions. as for the aforementioned wankers, unfortunately there is often little answer to this problem. at root, baseball is a spectator sport, though some consider it a technicality that you actually pay to see the game. yes, going to the big giant building with the roof that opens and closes is an experience with options that stimulate many senses, but the central point is intended to be the game. i don't care if you're bored with the game, the wave is not the answer. if you're bored go shopping, or go to fridays and wait in line for 45 minutes to get yourself a two-foot-tall neon drink. i see the "game-as-entertainment" counter-argument happening here. c'mon, when you go to the movie theater you're there to watch the movie, no? if you go to a bad movie, do you start the wave? am i innocent? no, i have done the wave - though not for a decade at least. am i purist, an elitist, someone who cares more about the game than what happens on the jumbotron, a person who has booed sandy maxx, an unforgiving salt who has been known to hurl a mike and/or ike at a deserving buffoon after repeated failed attempts at starting the wave? yes, i most certainly am. i'm not sorry.
  8. maybe i'm misreading your post, but you know we've got riske, right?
  9. does anybody have a handle on how torre is handling this situation? is there any rhyme or reason to it? i found this on espn, a fantasy-slanted article that suggests that it will continue to be a jumble (so long as all are healthy) with pierre benefiting most from joe torre's allegiance to established players. and these are the last things that rotoworld has had to say about it: and, separately: seems like torre has just about everyone baffled on this. i guess i'm posting here to see if anyone has found anything to suggest that match-ups or some other factors are impacting the juggle. yes, the fact that i own matt kemp in at least one of my leagues is a factor in my writing this, but it could also become big trade talk by mid-season if all three are producing.
  10. i really can't get on board with microwaving chips. they get all bendy in an eerily not-that-soggy way. like a new kind of staleness. and i have a huge taste for spice, if i'm really getting into it i'll mince a habanero or scotch bonnet [Re: Scotch Bonnet - "Eaten raw, these peppers are also known to cause dizziness, numbness of hands and cheeks, and severe heartburn."] and mix it with the cheese before melting, that's fiery. and how has this thread gone this far without someone mentioning black beans? they're a staple on my nacho plate. Edit: quote added
  11. have we had a thread similar to this in the past year or two? sounds kind of familiar.
  12. i'd take that gagne trade in a second and check on the sanity of your leaguemate. the sheets deal i personally wouldn't jump at on first glance, but perhaps it bolsters a roster need.
  13. the new york times is reporting that following a hamstring injury to backup catcher jose molina the yankees are without a healthy catcher and it seems likely that they'll call up chad moeller for monday's game in tampa. moeller likely to start... almost made me feel a little sorry for the yankees for the first time ever. almost. then i laughed.

  15. Um, I think the brewers would argue that the roof is probably also there to help with attendance and fan enjoyment and that most fans probably liked the fact today that it was 10 degrees warmer inside the stadium with the roof closed. Or was this post supposed to be in blue? The only problem with MP is not that the roof is closed too often, the problem is there isn't enough air circulation in the warm summer months. It's a sauna in there in July and August. on the platform of being a traditionalist, with respect to differing opinions, i have to agree with ennder here. unfortunately, i also must concede that advantage schneider's comment is the trump card - the almighty dollar is the driving force behind the roof, not preventing rainouts. in this and a few other sly ways, i am saddened by some modern ammendments to the way sports franchises handle their business. there's something to be said about wrapping up in a blanket with a thermos of hot chocolate that just made opening day for me. (damn nostalgia.)
  16. avrock...somehow i'm not surprised. stay classy.
  17. John Rambo. "You think you can just turn it of!?!? Like a switch?!?!" that's a lot of man and a lot of HGH screaming through those tears...
  18. i'm 27 - not at all old. i just read that chris webber retired. this has me feeling...i hesitate to say old, but perhaps dated? maybe i'm just feeling my true age, rather than a few years younger. I grew up with the fab four, i've been a sports fan straight through, and i've seen lots of athletes in many sports come and go without reaction. as a person who "feels younger than they are", i'm wondering why this feels profound in some way? help me out here. if you have experienced a similar reaction to a seemingly trivial event on any level - god knows the retirement of an nba player i never really cared about is totally random and patently negligible - please share.
  19. why has this fallen off the radar here? according to good sources it seems that the cubs have upped their offer (to a fairly ridiculous level - their top 3 pitching prospects + cedeno) and a bona fide deal is basically imminent. this concerns me. why have we stopped talking about it? denial? fatigue? depression? too caught up in the signing of kyle lohse?
  20. leave the car at the hotel and take the train to the stadium. it's cheaper, more culturally enriching, and more convenient than driving. drops you right there.
  21. i hope this doesn't over-shoot your request (i suppose it depends on your true passion for the margarita). i used to work at a place that served 150+ tequilas. 2 parts tequila 1 part fresh lime juice 1 part simple syrup splash triple sec i usually use a squirt of fresh lemon juice, too. shake and serve on the rocks. this recipe is especially good if you're making at least a few or better yet a whole bunch (back yard bbq). when you measure your lime juice, i recommend using a few lemons, too, to balance the citrus. when making a big batch, use simple syrup to taste as some prefer a sweeter margarita (i don't). the most important rule is don't skimp on tequila. cuervo gold is a sin.
  22. this is random and short notice, but i'm living in taiwan and tonight i've arranged to go to the mexico vs. canada olympic qualifying game. i've not been to any international baseball contests before and don't really know what to expect aside from a mostly empty stadium (an impression garnered from having seen a few games on tv). anyone have any experience with this sort of contest? as a secondary question: i haven't yet had time to investigate, are there any brewer prospects playing for either of these squads? i'm pumped. being so far away from the crew has got me yearning so hard for a good game - the cpbl is about like watching A ball - and i'm amped. i'll check back with a link to any photos i take. p.s. i'm neither mexican nor canadian, i just want to watch baseball.
  23. beipu, taiwan - it is being reported that on the evening of saturday, march 1, bf.net member flosses like fossas was involved in a one-scooter accident on a steep mountain highway somewhere between hsinchu city and beipu. it is unclear exactly what caused the crash, though slippery road paint is considered the leading culprit. involved in the crash were fossas, 27, a wisconsin ex-pat, and an unnamed woman - purportedly his roommate - 26, hailing from the toronto area. while initial indications were that the extent of the injuries of those involved was a moderate amount of road rash, it has come to light that fossas may be suffering from a more severe shoulder injury. thus far lack of sleep and general discomfort have been the only noted effects of this injury, but sources fear that the residual effects could include increased disdain for other drivers and lack of mouse mobility. according to an unnamed source: "the real fear in a situation such as this is that the potential combination of sleep deprivation and reduced mouse mobility could impact his fantasy play." fossas was quick to dispel any such thoughts by stating that he'd "been preparing for (his) drafts since early february". still, a friend who claims to be close to the situation has noted that fossas has been displaying an increasingly innovative cursing vocabulary when directing speech at other drivers. motor scooter is the primary mode of transportation in northern taiwan, and while most accidents go unreported it is safe to estimate that there are as many as 1,000 scooter accidents per day in taiwan.
  24. pogo, i'm in. i'm trimming back my casual league play this season and was hoping to add a keeper league. pm sent.
