  1. i agree that raines was a better player and deserves to be in ahead of lofton. that said, on paper, the two are an interesting comparison. with five more seasons in the bigs, raines has only 200 more hits and a slightly lower average than lofton, the bigger distinction in raines' favor is that he's got 800 sb, lofton is currently in the low 600s. raines was a 7-time all-star, lofton 6; both won one batting title. this is where the discussion gets interesting to me: just as we're discussing here, raines is/was renowned to be a great all-around player - a factor which shirks consideration of things like his statistical comparison to players like lofton - despite that he was often under the radar in that respect. all of the above considered, this subsequent question becomes all the more interesting, especially with respect to raines: on the off chance that kenny lofton plays five more seasons and maintains a fairly consistent statistical accumulation, is he a bona fide hall candidate on the strength of his numbers? even at that point, does he deserve to be in the hall ahead of raines?
  2. hawing: i'll take it. you do what you can. a side note, two things, actually: 1) please forward this idea, let's take it live (email, myspace bulletins). and 2) i think i'll be calling for photo updates on mondays.
  3. the other night i was telling my brother that i cant decide whether to go forward and rock an end of summer beard or to trim back to my normal scruff. as the conversation ambled along, i suggested maybe i shouldn't shave until the brewers get eliminated and we tossed it around - it stands to be said that i can't grow a very full beard and haven't ever committed to more than just having "not trimmed it back in a while". and it got me thinking: with all the "slump busting" and "turn this thing around" and "what are we doing to help the brewers lose" talk around here, maybe we kick in by banding together. the brewers need us, the faithful. so i'm proposing it, officially. join me in the 2007 don't shave until the brewers are eliminated BEARD-A-THON! (avrock, i know you've got a serious beard already, you're in for sure. bikeage77, i need you, buddy.) i'll go so far as to offer up my flickr page for weekly photo updates to all participants who will email me photos. for posterity's sake let's allow for manicuring (neck beard optional, that kind of thing). this could be a huge preempt to peeing your pants when the crew get in the playoffs. get on board! Clarified title - b19
  4. i moved to asia. i was 14-3 at miller park this year. then i left home and saw them get pwned twice in st. louis at the end of july and what was a skid then has become a full-scale pile up. and to think, before i left i was talking exasperatedly about what would i do when the crew were in the playoffs for the first time in my adult life...http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/tired.gif
  5. in some ways, isn't there something to be said for his resilience and ability to put up numbers year in and out despite his changing environs? and not only that, is it at all possible that lofton's career be appreciated with the consideration that he might be the first pervasive example of the modern free agent system on a good/great player's chances? the way his having moved around so much is handled by the selection committee could be telling for future players as well. agreed 100%, tim raines' fate might largely determine lofton's.
  6. as i'm tinkering with my fantasy teams i happened to pick up kenny lofton in a 14-team league, and snooping at his career numbers it occurred to me that lofton is a likely if not sure thing hall candidate. am i wrong? i know there is much dramatic conversation that certain stat milestones are no longer automatic hall passes (delighted by that inadvertent wordplay), but lofton possesses a well-rounded career. here are his current pertinent numbers and accolades: 2400+ hits (soon to be in the top 100 all-time) 600+ steals (15th all-time) .299 career average 4-time gold glove 6-time all-star al rookie record for stolen bases 66 not only are these impressive numbers, but i haven't heard anything to suggest that lofton won't be back for at least one more season. despite that he's been left for dead by more than one team, he continues to prove his worth and i'm sure somecone will take a flyer on him in 08 - heck, he might be a good fit in milwaukee (veteran leadership, playoff experience, high obp, steady defense) - which means he will almost assuredly get to 2,500 hits and has an outside shot at creeping up the all-time stolen bases list a couple more spots. conversely, the argument against him probably involves him never winning a major award, never playing on a world championship team, and generally being overlooked as quietly having been one of the best players of the decade of the 1990s. so am i wrong? doesn't lofton seem like a solid debate if not a pretty sure thing for the hall? [edit: spelling, italics] (temporarily removed tag until limit is raised --1992)
  7. they seem to link directly to div-x, my download was fine.
  8. is anybody hip to this website: http://openflv.com/? my sister just put me onto it, and i think it's awesome. play whatever you find streaming, granted some movies never seem to load, but the list is long enough that there's always something to see. and it's cheaper and more convenient that any hardcopy service. if you're up for a roll of the dice it might be the best thing out there...
  9. so you did, katuluu. i missed it among so many other names. don't you think the idea of it was a bit unoriginal, considering?
  10. this is a super entertaining thread. i like the debate about the bourne movies not being sequels. a series but not a sequel? that they can stand alone makes them unrelated? and it's not too discreetly obvious that the guy with the graphic novel image as his avatar called 300 the surprise movie of the year. i'm traveling (in scotland currently), and just saw eagle vs. shark, which i'd missed as an early summer release in the u.s. i didn't figure anyone would mention this amid all the SUMMER BLOCKBUSTERS (is red the color of sarcasm or reverence on this board?), but i wonder if anyone here saw it? it stars one of the guys from flight of the concords on hbo. i found it to be pretty entertaining, but not all that far from being a pretty obvious napolean dynomite rip, same basic premise anyway.
  11. as no one has mentioned any novels thus far, here are a couple of personal favorites... 1) underworld by don delillo - delillo is a pulitzer-quality novelist and underworld is considered to be his opus. the plot of the book centers around one man's quest to find the ball bobby thompson hit to win the '51 series (the shot heard round the world). it was runner-up in a new york times poll of best american fiction of the last 25 years (a 2006 survey). 2) the universal baseball association by robert coover is a great read for anyone who is or ever has been a stats maniac. the protagonist of the book gets unbelievably deep into the drama of what is, at root, dice baseball, living vicariously through the players. digression: why have so many people here recommended books that have been previously mentioned (within the thread) without reference to the prior reference or expansion of prior thoughts about the books? this sort of redundancy seems to happen a lot throughout this board and i just don't get it. if it's already been said, what good does it do to repeat the recommendation verbatim?
  12. to an extent, i agree with most of what has been said on both sides of the argument here. personally, the only time i don't like going to wrigley is when the brewers lose. that said, there are ways to go about things that will drastically improve any wrigley outing for a brewer fan. here are some recommendations: a) buy your tickets in advance, the further in advance the better. it doesn't take much legwork on stubhub/craigslist to turn up an acceptable ticket price - if not an outright deal. also, ask anyone you know who lives in chicago to put out feelers with friends or at work. many times there are season tickets out there to be had via the "friends" approach. this saves you all the hassle of street haggling. b) park on the north side and take the train down, if you do it right you don't have to transfer trains or sit in traffic. c) taking both of these steps will help you get to the game on time/early, which is integral for bleacher seats. don't stop going to wrigley, we've got to be heard.
  13. i have a lot of favorite classics - the bulk of what has been recommended earlier in this thread (hell, i have the original cover art from the catcher in the rye and jack kerouac's face tattooed on my body) - but my personal favorite book is The Mezzanine by Nicholson Baker. it's a short book, a true story according to Baker, about one afternoon in his life. the bulk of the book is made up of footnotes of his thoughts. i love the footnote style because it is acutely evocative of the way i think; i totally associated with the associative stream of consciousness. it's funny and insightful.
  14. anyone not using tickets the week of the 18th? i'm off all week and plan on getting out to the park. pm me with available tickets and applicable info.
  15. if the d-backs fall off and braun pans out, i'd like to see graffy/mench/nix/hart packaged with a young arm as a potential deal for eric byrnes....
  16. thou shalt not deal with the yankees! especially if you'll be giving up pitching of any value.
  17. violence in riverwest. i'm sure this has been posted here before, but it pisses me off everyday. why did a kid get run over running away from gunfire two blocks from my house the other night? why have most of the houses around mine been broken into in the past months? this is so stupid.
  18. i agree with dhonks, though i would negotiate like crazy to drive it to 4 years with a team option... having soriano around would improve this anemic offense more than some solid veterans/stopgaps...
  19. this is my first drunk thread post. i'm drunk. how did i end up at that after bar? i'm home now.
  20. i like cappy for crawford straight up, it's a good financial move. we've still got money to go get a solid veteran in the rotation, and what's more, i think it's time the brewers' crop of young pitchers put up or shut up, a la the twins and marlins year in and year out.
  21. tracy, i have to take issue with you there. $1 coins seem a novelty to americans, and will never catch on here, and, even though they haven't some people refuse to let it go. case in point: i work in the service industry, and once every couple of months some geriatric decides not only to tip me with dollar coins, but to make a point to draw my attention to it (a couple of times actually trying to tell me about them, as if i weren't aware, this being like 3 yeaers after their insertion to the public economy), thus further magnifying the fact that they are tipping 9%. insult + injury.
  22. do you pinch hit cirillo here? wily vet v. living legend? we need someone to clutch up... EDIT: sorry i thought there was only one out
