My guess is that Kottaras is Wolf's personal catcher (since I think he's caught his last two starts after Lucroy and WOlf had so much trouble together) so likely that Kottaras is starting tomorrow. Edmonds. Ugh. I know he's been hitting lately and Gomez hasn't but I can't help but think Gomez keeps an equal amount of runs off the board in the long run. How did this turn into a straight platoon?
There are two schools of thought on that. A lot of our players lack the creativity and one on one ball skills of the Latin American or African players. Do they learn this in the streets? I don't know. Look at Freddy Adu's development though. He was identified very early on and coached the hell out of. That didn't work out at all. On the flip side, I believe Dempsey was playing as a kid against mostly Mexican grown men in pickup games. He also has arguably the best one on one skills on the whole team. Coaching at the youth level is results oriented so there are lots of games and not a lot of one on one work on things like ball skills. On the other hand, depending on the quality of coaches, this seems to result in players that are tactically proficient.
No, and it's the reason why the US struggles offensively. That said I thought Bradley played much better yesterday. I thought Torres was positioned too defensive which limited his effectiveness going forward. I don't know if that was on Coach Bradley or Torres. They did much better when they had midfielders closer to the attack in the second half. Now if they could only play like they did in the second half to start the game Algeria won't be able to get any kind of rhythm.
I think that's Carrager's MO now that he can't really keep up with pace. If it's an American, it might have been a red. I thought it was a good result but the US should really take it like a 1-0 loss. They have so many problems through the central midfield that they can't link up with the strikers unless Donovan and Dempsey pinch in to help out which makes them super narrow. I really don't like Bradley as a box to box central midfielder and am not sure Clark was actually on the field for this game (other than giving up the first goal and losing possession of the ball). Without better possession they'll have troubles scoring against Slovenia and Algeria.
The second goal was Pearce ball watching and getting beat to the middle of the goal. I kind of liked how Gomez was playing off Ching so maybe playing both Gomez and Altidore together could work I'm a little concerned about Onyewu but we'll know more after Saturday when he isn't surrounded by awful backs
Who? Sheets? I remember trotting out Victor Santos, Ohka, Capuano, Davis, Obermueller. None of those guys were hard throwers with injury concerns, most were soft tossers with control issues. They were .500 that year too.
I was in the cities last weekend and tried to listen to the radio guys but they were insufferable in expressing the infallibility of the Twins combined with a complete lack of knowledge/appreciation about the Brewers. It was refreshing to hear Provus call a game professionally on the way back to WI.
I actually like Dempsey up front because he is seems to be good at tracking back to get the ball and making runs off of a target forward. Also I think Holden and Feilhaber in midfield aren't as much of a downgrade from Dempsey as using any other forward would be.
I think, like at the confed cup, Dempsey will play next to Altidore. That way Bradley can get both defensive midfielders on the pitch with Donovan and Holden/Feilhaber. Something like: Howard Spector Onyewu DeMerit Bocanegra Holden Edu/Clark Bradley Donovan Dempsey Altidore I'm pretty excited for the world cup. France is my second team and Domenech is an idiot.
I have watched all of the games. To me it looks like he can't locate his fastball or throw the change for a strike. Is that because he's old and "lost it" or because of mechanics/the natural ebbs and flows of baseball? I don't know and neither do you. You obviously think he's done and that you're unequivocally right but the point I think people are trying to make is that those who disagree with you are not automatically unrealistic.
What if his lack of movement is mechanics related, then is there no hope that he will be successful this year? Hoffman's 42 now, is last season any value or is there some mystical milestone that after 40 all analysis can only be done year to year? Is Jamie Moyer a good value right now since he's pitching well right now?
For the first time I can remember, Macha has used the same lineup two days in a row That seems strange because yesterday that lineup was generally ineffective.
What about Livan Hernandez, he of the .99 ERA with more walks than Ks. It sort of takes away the sting of the complete game shutout he threw against the Brewers.
How frustrating would it be if Zambrano were your best starting pitcher? At least we expect Suppan to suck. But to have someone who is known for unexpected bouts of suckiness must be awful. Good things Cubs fans don't pay enough attention to be bothered by those things.
Keith Law has a blog post about Wily Peralta and his improving repertoire. It's insider but the first few paragraphs can be read without a subscription. Needless to say Law is bullish on his prospects. Link
Well then I'm sorry for wasting everyone's time. Maybe its a carry over from those Gamel threads last summer or maybe it's reading too much into the posts in this tread that imply that Suppan is being evalauted differently from other candidates. Either way, the argument that Macha is favoring veterens because of their veterniness has not been made, is a figment of my imagination and deserves no further discussion.
