  1. Have you ever heard Jim Powell call Rivera "affable"? I have. I think that implies he's good natured, and liked by his teammates. He didn't really give that impression from the games I saw, but I hope it works out for him. He's been with the organization in AAA for a few years and remember -- he can play 3rd base (he played 2 games in AAA last year). All jokes aside I hope we don't see him at 3b in Milwaukee.
  2. work well with the young pitchers and be a good influence in the clubhouse. How do you know that will be the case? I'm not saying it won't, but he really didn't do anything from the games I saw that would give me that opinion. I would actually say Munson would've worked better with the pitchers and a better influence in the clubhouse. All in all it's not a shock. Rivera has some pop in his bat. Hopefully Munson will accept Nashville and not opt to become a free agent. I'm going to guess he opts out since he'd be a back up, but we'll have to wait and see.
  3. They have kept Rivera. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/03/26/rivera-chosen-over-munson.aspx
  4. The 08 return that we'll get back in 09 I think I mentioned it in my previous post. The 2008 return is going to include additional lines on it for the stimulus income, but once the tax is computed there will be a credit that backs out the exact amount -- so it is not a tax advance. I know there were a lot of reports circulating before it was finalized that it would be taxed or reduce/increase a refund/expense, but it's not the case. It is "free" money.
  5. I'm hearing (and this could very well be wrong of course) that this rebate is simply an advance on next year's tax return, and that we'll be getting that much less in our 2009 return. Are you referring to the actual 2008 return that is filed in 2009? Or the 2009 return that is filed in 2010?
  6. I don't doubt this, but when I hear stuff like this said about a player, I always want some kind of proof. I mean what level of a turd was he? A floater? A bottom of the bowl submarine? Do we have examples where he undermined management, or picked fights with players? Or did he just hog the buffet table and let loose with bad gas in the dugout? I see what you're saying. They knew he was bad, but maybe they didn't know how bad he was or they thought they had the guys in the locker room that wouldn't allow for the behavior. He really was a waste of space. I was at the Atlanta game towards the end of the year where he must have ran the slowest I've ever seen anyone run to first base. Atlanta fans were even giving him a hard time and a few Braves fans told me they felt bad for me since Estrada was on the Brewers. He clearly didn't make any fans in Atlanta during his time there.
  7. You should be getting $600 then. My wife and I actually got something in the mail a week or two ago about the tax rebate. It just states that we may be eligible for one. Has anyone else got these? I guess it's costing about $40 million to send those out so hopefully people are getting them. Below is a good reference point for the rebate. And just to clarify from what I've read and seen it doesn't look like this is a short term loan. The 2008 tax returns include a new line that will show the amount of the rebate as income, but then a new credit that backs it out. So essentially it is non-taxable money and not an early payment of a 2008 refund. http://money.cnn.com/2008/03/17/pf/taxes/rebates_payment_schedule/index.htm?postversion=2008031716
  8. I do not think anyone, especially Melvin, could have projected Estrada being a huge turd in the locker room, on the base paths, and behind the plate. I don't know if that's entirely true. Look at how much he bounced around before coming to the Brewers. I'm sure they knew to some degree what they were getting.
  9. Well given that April is when you tend to have the most bad weather, yes. Especially games against the Cubs which, yes are more important. And its no sure thing McClung will be gone in 2 weeks. I guess I just have a different opinion then. I'd rather see the Brewers put together the best roster for the long haul and we won't know until the end of the year how important the Cubs games were.
  10. Do all moves need to take into account a couple of April games? It's really not going to matter after McClung is put on waivers in April.
  11. First of all, they cut 75% of Vargas's salary and the remaining $900,000 isn't insignificant. I don't see how it is significant. If you ballpark the 2008 payroll at $80 million the $900k is just over 1 percent of the payroll. I really don't think Melvin is losing sleep over that. If that's his biggest mistake he's the best GM in baseball.
  12. The answer is painfully obvious -- send him back to Nashville because he needs to sign my Manny Parra game worn jersey (1982 Brewers style) I bought last year. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif In all seriousness though Mark DiFelice may not be a horrible option if another pitcher is needed to start to save Parra innings. He has solid control and he'd be able to do the job (I'm not saying he's a stud, but I think he'd be serviceable).
  13. I just think Bush is a better candidate for moving to the pen than Parra. I'm a little concerned with sticking Parra there for a month or two and then trying to build up his arm again to start. Especially in his rookie season, I think it'd be best just to not mess with his routine. He's built to be a starter. I think if you give Bush a couple weeks to adjust, he can come out of the pen without much trouble. They did do this with him in his "rookie" season last year -- I know he didn't have enough innings pitched for it to be his "rookie" season, but I'm not a fan of that rule. He made only 2 starts out of 9 appearances. I think a lot of it will just be on how long his starts are and if his arm is looking tired. Depending on how the rosters go during the year we can always send Parra down for a few spot starts if we need an extra bat on the bench for a short period.
  14. It's worrisome if it continues into the regular season. Hopefully they're just being more aggressive with it in the spring because they can. The Brewers will be hurting a bit for runs if they do this and there will be more solo HRs.
  15. But is it any better to pay him $3MM to sit at home? Seriously, I am asking because it hasn't really been answered that I have seen here. Aren't the Brewers still responsible for paying his salary? Click on the blog above posted by brewjihad. Brewers only have to pay $900k of his salary and save $2.7 million.
  16. How many times must the name McClung be brought up? Can't wait until Suppan is scheduled to start and the Chicago game gets delayed 3 hours and McClung gets to take the mound. If you think McClung was the main factor, than that's your opinion and that's fine. I just don't think it was ever McClung vs. Villy in the Brewers eyes. If they didn't want to put Vargas in Nashville at his salary, I'm guessing they may not have wanted him as the long guy in the pen. I'm not saying that McClung > Vargas. I'm saying it's quite possible that McClung had nothing to do with this. Has anyone heard anything regarding the salary impact?
  17. So, Villanueva is even superior at McClung's sole reason for being employed- strikeouts. Truthfully, I think keeping McClung is just a terrible move. I was referencing the post made comparing Villy to Bush and Vargas. I don't think the Brewers wanting McClung over Villy in Milwaukee ever played a factor into this, but I might be able to find out in a few weeks when the Sounds move back to Nashville.
  18. Wanting Villanueva in the rotation has nothing to do with releasing Vargas. How does it not? With Vargas on the team it looked like CV would be in Nashville. Now with Vargas gone it appears that Villy is in the Milwaukee rotation. That's a pretty direct impact in my eyes.
  19. Everyone that wanted CV in the rotation you now have your wish. I don't think it's the best move and some of the same posters begging for CV to start are now upset. This is what some of you wanted -- CV in the rotation. I would have preferred putting Parra or CV in the minors to start the season off, but it's not a terribly shocking move.
  20. It looks like McClung will indeed make the 25 man roster. http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/03/25/mcclung-will-make-the-team.aspx I also don't think it's a sure fire thing that CV is headed to Nashville...I wouldn't be surprised if it's Parra. Either way I can see the logic in it -- it is only April -- and hopefully Parra and CV stay healthy all year and are in Milwaukee a decent portion. To clarify there are 2 fewer OFF DAYS in Nashville than Milwaukee in April. Thanks for pointing that out brewjihad http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  21. Is this really a new story? Per the blog: Word is spreading in the Brewers' clubhouse that first baseman Prince Fielder and leftfielder Ryan Braun have been identified as the first players to be approached by management to discuss multi-year contract offers. Is it just stating that the Brewers will attempt to offer Fielder and Braun multi-year deals first? Wasn't that the plan all along? I might be missing something here.
  22. We don't know if Villy is the next great thing, but at least he has upside. Vargas and Bush are proven pitchers that will put up mediocre numbers. You have to dig to strike gold. Doesn't this contradict the "win now" mode by admitting that we don't know as much about Villy? I think the "win now" thing will be an issue when Cameron is through with his suspension and Yo comes off the DL. I'm thinking with those moves coming up McClung might be sent down then (granted he clears waivers). I think CV will be a good pitcher, but I really hope the Brewers can keep him as a starter no matter what level he is at in 2008. I think it's important for him to have a role and not burn out his arm out of the bullpen. As long as CV is starting in Milwaukee or Nashville in April, I'll be fine with that. I just want to point out again the game difference (Nashville has 2 fewer days in April) and the fact that the Brewers are more likely to get games rained/snowed out than Nashville and PCL -- I think this is my main reason that I think CV starting in Nashville is fine.
  23. How do you get a free hat? I looked through the booklets I got with the game and none of them say anything about a hat. I believe it only applies to the PS3 version. I'm guessing you have PS2? I thought the same thing when I opened mine, but looking into it the website says it's only for PS3 so no hat this year. Has anyone else noticed that it's not as easy to hit home runs this year? I think this is a good thing, but I'm wondering if I just stink with my power so far.
  24. Thanks so far to everyone who has taken it! I can post the percentage results if anyone is interested once the survey is complete. I believe it is "valid" through March 30th, which means you can't take the survey after that and we'll have results. Again, thanks to everyone who has helped out so far!
