Rattlers score two in ninth to beat Kane County 5-3 Denson homers, drives in three for Wisconsin By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were 0-5 against the Kane County Cougars in 2014 as the teams headed into the final game of their three-game set Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Wisconsin topped Kane County 5-3 and snapped that winless streak against the team with the best record in the Midwest League with some clutch hits and a couple of big strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth. The Cougars (23-10) struck first. Ben Carhart drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first. Yasiel Balaguert blooped in a double down the right field line and Carhart just beat the throw to the plate for a 1-0 lead. David Denson gave the Rattlers (14-18) the lead in the top of the second inning. Omar Garcia singled with one out. The left-handed Denson lifted a fly to left that carried over the fence for an opposite field, two-run homer. Denson's second home run of the year gave the Rattlers a 2-1 advantage. Shawon Dunston, Jr. got the Cougars back to even in the bottom of the second inning. Cael Brockmeyer started the inning with a single, but he was still at first with two outs. A passed ball with Dunston at the plate moved Brockmeyer into scoring position. Dunston would dropped in a broken-bat single to center on a 3-2 pitch from Taylor Williams and Brockmeyer scored to tie the game again. Jake Hanneman tripled to start the bottom of the fifth inning for Kane County. He scored on a wild pitch by Williams and Kane County was up 3-2. Cougars starting pitcher Justin Amlung retired thirteen straight Wisconsin hitters after the home run by Denson. Clint Coulter broke that string with another home run. Coulter's two-out, solo home run evened the game 3-3. That long ball was the sixth of the season for Coulter. Wisconsin went back in front in the top of the ninth inning. Taylor Brennan and Garcia singled with one out to place Rattlers on first and second. Denson singled to right and Brennan scored to put the Rattlers up 4-3. Garcia went around to third on the single. Angel Ortega's squeeze bunt was enough to get Garcia home with the second run of the inning and Wisconsin took a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Alexander, who took over for Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning, gave up a one out double and a single in the bottom of the ninth. That put the tying runs on base and brought the winning run to the plate. But, the left-handed Alexander struck out Hannemann and Carlos Penalver to close out the Wisconsin victory. The Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday to begin a six-game, seven-day homestand. The first opponents are the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Wisconsin had named Barrett Astin (3-2, 4.18) as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Kernels have Felix Jorge (2-2, 7.15) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm. The first 1,000 fans to attend Thursday's game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers pitcher Taylor Williams courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. All fans can enjoy a 22-oz soda, a 16-oz beer, or an Arty's Old Fashioned drink for just $2 as part of Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will televise the game starting at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast may be heard on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with that pregame show at 6:15pm. Subscribers to MiLB.tv may watch the game over the internet. HOME RUNS: WIS: David Denson (2nd, 1 on in 2nd inning off Justin Amlung, 1 out) Clint Coulter (6th, 0 on in 6th inning off Justin Amlung, 2 out) WP: Tyler Alexander (2-3) LP: Michael Wagner (0-1) TIME: 2:28 ATTN: 7,433 Wisconsin Boxscore Finally... Just. Beat. The. Cubs. The gun worked sporadically all series but Chris did see a 91 from Taylor Williams, which isn't earth shattering but it's still pretty early in the season and unusually cold. Williams wasn't overpowering but limited the damage for the most part with runners on base, Clint Coulter didn't do him any favors defensively, and many of the hits weren't struck all that well but found holes. Tyler Alexander made it interesting but managed to close it out. Omar Garcia (2-4) and David Denson (2-4,HR) had the multi-hit games for the T-Rats. Chris McFarland (1-3,BB,SB) extended his hitting streak to 5 games and swiped his 13th bag. Chris has only been caught stealing 2 times all season. Wisconsin Recap

Now a 3rd error which extends Nelson's outing. At rate Jimmy is having a really nice 6th, I love the 4 pitch strike out to Ynoa and a 5 pitch strike out to Garcia, no messing around with full counts or wasting pitches, just attacking. Nelson just got out of the 6th, 104 pitches and 69 were strikes, not too shabby.

2014 Perfect Game Draft Coverage

Sorry for no notice on this, I didn't get over to PG's site until about 30 minutes ago, and didn't see this until just now. MLB Draft Chat: May 7 edit. Brewer question at 11:48, not really answered though, but since they through out a name I'm not a huge Gatewood guy. -
Nelson with 88 pitches through 5... which is a common theme in our system, it would be nice to have a couple of guys whom project as 2s that could consistently attack through the strike zone and be more efficient. edit. I should add that some errors cost him extra pitches but I'd really like to see him pitch through 6, which seems unlikely given that for 2 years now most Brewers pitchers seem to be operating on an 85 pitch limit. edit 2. he's batting, so hopefully that means he's coming back out for the 6th, nice.

Wow great scoop PG, I just refreshed BA's site after finishing the Bukauskas article and they have nothing yet. I would think that he's absolutely going back, but depending on his recovery timeline he might not be ready to pitch for ECU next year either. A team would have to be extremely confident that he'd fully recover from TJ surgery to draft him hurt. I know we kind of treat the surgery like a full recovery is a given, but there is still a small chance that the pitcher will never the same as he was. I could see a team towards the bottom of the first round taking a chance. edit. Apparently it's not affecting his draft status all that much:

The Brewers literally have a plethora of relief options up and down the minor leagues, they could easily plug in someone like Fiers into the bullpen to slide Thorburg into the rotation. I would like to break in 1 young pitcher into the rotation every year but the way it is setup right now the Brewers will have to replace 3 starting pitchers in 2016. I'd like to move one and make some room to allow for some upward mobility to get younger pitchers some experience before we absolutely need to rely on them because we don't have other options. I don't consider temporary injury replacements as significant experience, it is certainly better than nothing, but I'd like young pitchers handled like how Peralta was last year. Give them a spot and let them sink or swim for a season. I don't see any issue filling the necessary bullpen spots next season if Thornburg is shifted to the rotation. What I really don't want to see is Thornburg made the closer before he's given the opportunity to succeed or fail in the rotation. To me the bullpen is a last resort for talented pitchers that struggle in the rotation or a good home for your less talented guys who get pushed out of the rotation by superior pitchers. It shouldn't be the first home for any pitcher, it should be the last option. -
Melvin has gone after position players in the past at the deadline, like Lopez. I would rather trade someone like Jungmann to the Pirates for Wang than give up a B or C type prospect for another short term solution. If you could land a player to help for 2 years or so until some of our Minor League OF depth matures enough to be MLB ready I wouldn't have a problem with it. However to trade for some short term solution just to have to revisit the hole again in the off season doesn't appeal to me. I think there is hope for Davis, I never thought he'd be an all-star, but he could be a decent player to bridge the gap to better talent. The knock on him was always that his swing was long, I haven't watched enough of him this year to offer an opinion as when I've had time I've been mostly focused on watching MiLB baseball to relay more first hand observations.

I get constant flash player crashes using it, doesn't matter what browser or operating system. I have win 7 32 with IE and FF on my work laptop, win 7 64 on my home desktop computer with FF and Chrome, and I have a windows 8 64 laptop with Chrome and FF. I haven't had success with any so I basically gave up using gameday this year. I just started following the games through The Score App on my iPhone, I won't even use MLB's app anymore unless I want to see the boxscore.

Shawn Zarraga - Development & Potential
TheCrew07 replied to JohnBriggs12's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Well there had to be reason the Brewers weren't advancing him even though he's been hitting for a long time and he hasn't played more than 74 games in any single season thus far. Of course some of that lost playing time can be attributed to injuries, but not all. Odd that it took until after his 6th season for him to get motivated, I would like to know what's been said to him along the way... -

2014 Baseball America Draft Coverage
TheCrew07 replied to TheCrew07's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
I don't like this at all for him as a pitcher, NC is another program who's not afraid to run up incredibly high pitch counts on their starting pitchers. However the draft is deep in pitching and if he performs he could get a much bigger payday down the road, but he might also be pushing back his first big MLB contract. Bingo! It's been my pet peeve for some time, I don't understand why you wouldn't ride out a hot reliever for at least 2 innings in a game? If he's dealing, let him go, there's no guarantee the next reliever up is going to have his good stuff that day. I'd rather pitch a guy 2 innings in one game and give him the next day off if possible rather than use him 3 straight days, even if his pitch counts in those innings are low. It would be nice if some day some manager would break the mold and start managing situations rather than innings. What does it matter who the manager is when all of them manage the exact same way? The only thing that really separates those guys is how they manage the club house, they all stick to nothing but established protocols that really don't make any sense if you put some thought into what's happening. In what other sport does every single coach adapt the exact same philosophy? I admit I don't know soccer hardly at all outside of giving it a chance during the last 3 World Cups, but in the sports I tend to follow outside of baseball: hockey, basketball, and football there are teams that might have similar schemes offensively and defensively in some respects, but everyone has a unique philosophy twist in one way or another. Nothing is as rigid as managerial strategy in baseball. I find much of the established protocol in baseball to be completely frustrating from the minor leagues through MLB.

Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener To Sky Sox, 4-1 Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/5/6/74601056/cuts/figaro_yg1pujqt_9cg00c9h.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip on the short end of a 4-1 defeat to the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Tuesday evening in the opener of a four-game series at Security Service Field. Nashville (18-14) fell into a tie for first place with Round Rock with the defeat. The Sounds are just 3-6 in series openers this season. Colorado Springs plated all four of its runs in the seventh inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and claim victory. Left-hander Brent Leach made a spot start for Nashville when scheduled pitcher Alfredo Figaro didn't arrive at the ballpark with enough time to prepare for the start. Leach worked a pair of scoreless frames with one hit allowed and has not allowed a run in his last 7 2/3 innings over five outings. The Sounds missed an early scoring chance after placing runners on second and third against Sky Sox starter Yohan Flande in the top of the second, courtesy of a Jeremy Hermida single and Lucas May double. However, the Colorado Springs southpaw recovered to strike out Hector Gomez and Kevin Mattison in succession to escape the jam unscathed. Nashville left fielder Eugenio Velez kept it a scoreless tie in the home half of the second when he threw out Ben Paulsen at the plate as he attempted to score on Rafael Ynoa's two-out single. It marked the fifth runner gunned down at home by Sounds outfielder this season. The Sounds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth but missed a chance at a much bigger inning after having the bases loaded twice during the frame. After loading the bags with no outs against Flande. May (2-for-3) lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Elian Herrera, who extended his season-best hit streak to six games with a 2-for-4 evening. After a Gomez infield single re-loaded the bases, Kevin Mattison hit a grounder that resulted in a forceout at the plate for the second out and Figaro grounded out to shortstop for the final out. Figaro, who took the hill for Nashville in the third frame, worked four scoreless innings to open his outing before running into trouble in the seventh, when the Sky Sox touched him for four runs to grab a 4-1 lead. Colorado Springs right fielder Kyle Parker led off the bottom of the seventh with a game-tying solo homer to left, his fifth blast of the year. Paulsen followed with a double to center and later scored the go-ahead run on Ynoa's one-out RBI single. After Ynoa stole second, Dustin Garneau added another RBI single to make it a 3-1 game before Tim Wheeler chased Figaro by driving a two-out single to right to bring in Garneau. Nashville brought the potential tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against Brooks Brown after Kevin Mattison tripled and pinch-hitter Hunter Morris drew a walk. The Sky Sox right-hander caught Irving Falu looking at a game-ending strike three, however, to close out the win and nail down his second save of the year. Figaro (0-1) took the loss for the Sounds after surrendering four runs on eight hits in his 4 2/3 frames of action. Rob Scahill (1-0) was the beneficiary of the late Sky Sox rally, picking up the win after hurling two hitless innings of relief. The teams continue the series with a 12:05 p.m. matinee tomorrow afternoon. Brewers top prospect Jimmy Nelson (4-1, 2.08) will man the bump for the Sounds and face right-hander Leuris Gomez (0-0, 21.60). Nashville Boxscore Way to be on the ball Alfredo Figaro! Kane County pulls away late to beat Wisconsin Remillard drives in four for Cougars to beat Rattlers 8-2 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Kane County Cougars were locked in a low-scoring game Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. But, Will Remillard drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth inning single and knocked in three more with a seventh inning double to lead Kane County to an 8-2 win over their Western Division rivals. Wisconsin (13-18) scored in the first inning on a two-out single by Clint Coulter. Chris McFarland singled with one out and stole second. Coulter grounded a single to left and McFarland easily scored for a 1-0 lead. Tuesday was the second time in as many games the Rattlers scored a first inning run. The Cougars (23-9) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. A double and a walk put runners on first and second with one out. Jordan Hankins sent a broken bat grounder wide of the bag at first. The throw went to second and it was late. Hankins was credited with an infield single on the play and the bases were loaded. Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey got David Bote to send a slow grounder past the mound. Wisconsin got the force out at second, but the throw to first for the inning ending double play was late. That let the runner from third score to tie the game. Steve Halcomb singled, Omar Garcia walked, and McFarland reached on a bunt single to start the top of the third inning. Michael Ratterree's flyball to center was deep enough to score Halcomb with the go-ahead run. McFarland tried to go to second as the throw came into the cutoff man at short, but he was out on the play. The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Remillard doubled to right-center and took third when Hankins hit a grounder to the right side that was booted for an error. Bote knocked in Remillard with a sacrifice fly to center and the score was 2-2. Yasiel Balaguert started the bottom of the sixth inning with a single. Back-to-back wild pitches by Gainey got Balaguert to third base. Rogers drew a walk to put runners on the corners. It would be a single by Remillard to send in Balaguert to break the tie. An error on a grounder of the bat of Hankins allowed Rogers to score from second base and Kane County was up 4-2. It was Remillard who put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh inning against reliever Rodolfo Fernandez. Kane County loaded the bases with one out on a single and a pair of walks. Remillard doubled to left to drive in all three runners on base. That made the score 8-2 in Kane County's favor. Remillard was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, a run, and four RBI on Tuesday night. He is 8-for-11 with five doubles and ten RBI in three games he has played against Wisconsin this season. Kane County tacked on one more run in the bottom of the eighth as a runners scored from second on a dropped flyball to center for what would have been the final out. Wisconsin is 0-5 against the Cougars this season and has fallen to a season low five games under .500. The Cougars have the best record in the Midwest League and are 16-2 at home this season. The final game of the series - and Wisconsin's brief three-game road trip - is Wednesday morning. Taylor Williams (1-0, 3.67) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Juan Paniagua (0-1, 5.31) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 11:00am. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 10:40am. The Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday evening to take on the Cedar Rapids Kernels. That game starts a six-game, seven-day homestand for the Midwest League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. WP: Daury Torrez (4-1) LP: Preston Gainey (1-2) TIME: 2:36 ATTN: 2,728 WI 16 - 39 Wisconsin Boxscore Kane Country just owns WI this year winning every game thus far and outscoring the T-Rats 39-16, and what's worse is that they are a Cubs' affiliate. I fell asleep in the 3rd but Chris mentioned Preston Gainey hit 91 in the 2nd. I didn't miss much, Gainey's final line was 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO, and 2 WP. Rodolfo Fernandez wasn't any better giving up 4 runs, 3 earned, in his 3 innings of work. Between the 2 pitchers they walked 7 and managed to strike out just 1 batter. I blame Tyler Wagner for starting today's no strike out trend. The T-Rats managed just 5 hits so Chris McFarland's (2-3,BB) effort was the only multi-hit game and to make matters worse the Rattlers committed 4 errors as a team. 2 by David Denson, 1 each by McFarland and Johnny Davis. Wisconsin Recap Not much to see here but WI did limit their own opportunity with an out on the bases in the 3rd. Wisconsin Top of the 3rd Steven Halcomb singles on a ground ball to second baseman David Bote. Omar Garcia hit by pitch. Steven Halcomb to 2nd. Christopher McFarland singles on a bunt ground ball to catcher Will Remillard. Steven Halcomb to 3rd. Omar Garcia to 2nd. Michael Ratterree flies into a sacrifice double play, center fielder Jacob Hannemann to shortstop Danny Lockhart to second baseman David Bote. Steven Halcomb scores. Omar Garcia to 3rd. Christopher McFarland out at 2nd on the throw. Clint Coulter grounds out, third baseman Jordan Hankins to first baseman Jacob Rogers.

Colby might have sold me on Chavis, especially if he could stick at 3B, I wouldn't want him at #12, but if he was still there at #41... In PG's mock he went at #10, that seems high but there just aren't many "safe" upside picks out of the hitting crop, but I could see some team falling in love with him and making him a top 10 pick, it seems to happen every year. Draft Focus: Michael Chavis He's another guy I hadn't given much consideration to until Colby's original post in this thread so I went and did my due diligence. I'm not big on drafting for need it's just that 3 HS bats I'm most intrigued by happen to play Brewer positions of need. I also like Ti'quan Forbes who projects as a SS/3B/2B (depending on how he matures physically, he doesn't have much power or a cannon arm right now), and yes I readily admit I'm into toolsy athletes, I even want athletic pitchers... as much as I liked Ben Sheets he didn't fit all that well in the NL. Here's the PG Draft Focus: Ti'Quan Forbes article. Last but not least I like Jack Flaherty, a southern California kid. He's another tall HS SS, I loved the Corey Seager comparison when I read his draft article as I've been been a Seager fan for a long time. Great contact skills, easy swing, good athlete, and he ran a 6.37 60. Draft Focus: Jack Flaherty I kind of like the idea of going pitcher at #12 and hitter at #41. I'd be fine with 2 pitchers as well but if it went 2 hitters I might have to drive down and torch the offices at Miller Park.

Just a teaser as the list is insider content... so if you aren't a subscriber why not? At least do the monthly until the draft and then cancel, give 'em something for all their hard work! They moved my boy Grant Holmes up to #5, hopefully he doesn't perform his way up out of the #12 pick. I would love for the Brewers to have Holmes, Freeland, and Newcomb all there ripe for the picking... but then the Brewers would draft Trea Turner and I'd have to cry myself to sleep because of the pitching we walked away from. 2014 HS Top 500 Prospects (Updated: 5/6/2014) 1.
