  4. Rattlers rebound with 9-1 victory Offense gets 15 hits as Ross goes six strong innings By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/8/2/56809282/cuts/RossWeb_x665vg2b_ut6qhzet.jpg Austin Ross tossed six shutout innings and allowed one hit in Wisconsin's 9-1 win at Quad Cities on Monday night. DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win on Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park to keep their chances at a return to the Midwest League playoffs realistic. They were facing the Quad Cities River Bandits and Mark Appel, the #1 overall pick in the 2013 draft. Wisconsin responded with a 9-1 victory to back up six strong innings from Austin Ross. Alfredo Rodriguez started the Timber Rattlers offense in the third inning with a leadoff double to center. It was the first of four hits for Rodriguez on the night. Tyler Roberts followed with a sharp single to center to put runners on the corners. Orlando Arcia grounded into a force play at second to retire Roberts, but Rodriguez scored on the play for the 1-0 lead. Tyrone Taylor followed with a single to put runners on the corners again. Michael Reed drove in Arcia for a 2-0 advantage. Wisconsin (51-64 overall, 22-28 second half) added to their lead by getting aggressive against Appel in the top of the fourth inning. Max Walla doubled to right-center on the first pitch of the inning. Parker Berberet followed with a single on the second pitch of the inning to put runners on the corners. Rodriguez knocked in Walla with the an RBI single on the third pitch of the inning. The single by Rodriguez sent Berberet around to third base. Roberts waited three whole pitches into his at bat before sending a fly ball to right that was deep enough to score Berberet for a 4-0 lead. Arcia cracked the first pitch of his fourth inning at bat to right on a hit-and-run to get Rodriguez around to third base. Then, Tyrone Taylor cracked the first pitch of his at bat down the third base line for a two-run double and a 6-0 lead. That double by Taylor knocked Appel out of the game. Mitchell Lambson took over on the hill and get the second out, but Mike Garza drove in the final run of the inning with a single. The Rattlers were comfortably in front 7-0. Ross tossed six innings in his longest start since he underwent Tommy John surgery on May 10, 2012. Ross walked one and struck out four. The only hit he allowed was a one out single in the sixth. Taylor extended the lead to 8-0 with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning. Quad Cities (68-50, 30-19) got their only run of the game on an RBI double by Austin Elkins in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Chris Razo. The Rattlers added a final run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Berberet. The victory gave Wisconsin a series win at Modern Woodmen Park as they took two of three from the River Bandits. The series win marked the first road series win for the Rattlers in the second half of the season. They had been 0-6-1 until this series with the River Bandits. Wisconsin's offense collected 15 hits in the game and kept their playoff hopes alive. Peoria, the current leaders in the second half Western Division Wild Card leaders, lost at Clinton on Monday night. The Rattlers are within three games of the Chiefs with 20 games remaining in the regular season. The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday night at home to start a brief three-game series with Peoria, the team they are trying to catch in the standings. Preston Gainey (4-7, 5.90) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Chris Perry (2-1, 2.64) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 7:05pm. Wednesday night is a WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night and Thrivent Financial Night. Bang for Your Buck with WIXX means $1 Cher-Make hot dogs, $1 Pepsi Products, and $1 Miller Beers! Thrivent Financial Night features a special Wednesday night fireworks display after the game presented by Thrivent Financial. WP: Austin Ross (1-0) LP: Mark Appel (0-1) TIME: 2:33 ATTN: 2,292 Wisconsin Boxscore Alfredo Rodriguez have a game! Mehring loving refers to him as "Fredo" and Fredo went 4-5 with 2B and scored 3 runs, he now has a 10 game hitting streak. I'm not a Mark Appel fan so Austin Ross' performance coupled with the offensive explosion attacking 1st pitch FBs made my night. Ross had his best performance of the season, allowing 1 hit and walk against 4 SOs over 6 scoreless innings. Chris Razo was a bit uneven, as he has been since being called up but Taylor Wall was excellent as usual. In addition to Rodriguez' night Tyrone Taylor (2-4,2B), Michael Reed (2-5), Michael Garza (2-5), and Parker Berberet (2-5) all had multi-hit games. Max Walla doubled for his only hit of the game and every Rattler batter managed at least 1 hit in the game. 8. That would be plenty of athleticism, maybe the most athletic OF in MLB but I don't see Gomez and other of those guys playing in the same OF. We still have Braun and Davis for the OF, and if Davis keeps hitting Braun is going to end up in RF. Taylor is probably 3 full years away, maybe 2 depending on how he hits next season, he could go A+/AA in 2014 and AAA in 2015, or jump one level at a time. I would think D'Vo is 2 full years away as well, I don't think there's anyway that Taylor jumps past D'Vo so Taylor will only move up when D'Vo does. It's extremely encouraging that D'Vo finished his degree and found himself missing baseball, I was worried that someone brow beat him into coming back and his heart wasn't in it, but thankfully I was way off the mark. He's been fantastic in the field not to mention his hit tools have been excellent since his return. I was extremely high on his potential before he walked away and I've been making an concerted effort to reign in my enthusiasm for his return. If his power stroke comes around he could be special but like with all players next season at AA will give us our best insight into what we have. We should have pretty decent OFs at all of the affiliates next year from AA through A.

  13. River Bandits shutout Rattlers 5-0 Hernandez hits two homers & drives in five; QC defense turns triple play By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/7/2/56719172/cuts/GarzaHitsWeb_uorvf7i9_kfxbnpg7.jpg Mike Garza had two hits for the Timber Rattlers on Sunday at Quad Cities. DAVENPORT, IA - The Quad Cities River Bandits returned the favor on the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday evening at Modern Woodmen Park. Wisconsin had beaten Quad Cities 7-0 on Saturday, but the Bandits beat the Rattlers 5-0 on Sunday. Brian Holmes tossed six scoreless innings, Teoscar Hernandez hit two homers and drove in all of the runs, and the River Bandit defense turned a back-breaking triple play late in the game. Jordan Scott got the first hit for Quad Cities (68-49 overall, 30-18 second half) with a one out bunt single in the third inning. He went to second on an errant pickoff throw. Scott tried to steal third, but was thrown out for the second out of the inning. The next two batters singled against Rattlers starter Jorge Lopez to bring Hernandez to the plate. The River Bandits centerfielder lined a three-run homer to left on an 0-1 pitch from Lopez. The Rattlers (50-64, 21-28) struggled to get anything going against Holmes. The River Bandits lefty allowed three hits over six scoreless innings with a walk and seven strikeouts. Wisconsin got something going against Quad Cities reliever Zach Morton in the top of the seventh. Parker Berberet reached on an infield single to start the inning. Alfredo Rodriguez was next and he singled up the middle to put runners on first and second with no outs. Lance Roenicke was next and he sent a slicing line drive down the line in right field that looked like it would drop in for extra bases with Berberet racing around third and Rodriguez halfway between second and third. But, Jordan Scott made a great running catch for the first out. He threw back to first to double off Rodriguez. The throw to second tripled off Berberet to end the inning. Hernandez put an exclamation point on his day with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Rattlers loss did not allow them to pick up ground on Peoria in the second half Western Division Wild Card race. Peoria lost 6-5 at Clinton earlier on Sunday afternoon. The Rattlers trail Peoria by four games with 21 games remaining in the regular season. The final game of the three game series is Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Austin Ross (0-0, 4.96) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Mark Appel (1-0, 2.29), the #1 overall pick in the 2013 draft, is the scheduled starter for the River Bandits. Game time is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. 15. Rattlers rock River Bandits Roache homers twice, Wagner & Martin combine on 1-hit shutout By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/6/0/56611660/cuts/RoacheHighFiveWeb_58eky6nu_o7s4ozpx.jpg Victor Roache hit a pair of home runs at Quad Cities on August 10 to give him 20 on the season. The Timber Rattlers won 7-0. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) DAVENPORT, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers did just about everything right in a 7-0 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits Saturday night at Modern Woodmen Park. On the pitching side of the ledger, Tyler Wagner and Harvey Martin combined on a one-hitter. They got more than enough support from the offense as Victor Roache blasted two homers and Mike Garza hit one. Both Roache and Garza drove in three runs in the game, Wisconsin's second straight win. The Rattlers (50-64 overall, 21-27 second half) pounced on the River Bandits (67-49, 29-18) in the first inning. Tyrone Taylor doubled to start the game. Garza blooped a single down the right field line to drive in Taylor for the first run of the game. Roache was next and he lined a 2-0 pitch from Quad Cities starting pitcher Joe Bircher over the wall in right-center for a two-run home run and a 3-0 lead. The home run was his nineteenth of the season. Garza knocked in his second run of the game in the third inning. Michael Reed doubled with one out. Garza singled to left and Reed got the hand in under the tag of Quad Cities catcher Roberto Pena. The closeness of the play brought River Bandits manager Omar Lopez out of the dugout to argue and he overstayed his welcome. Lopez was ejected before play was finally restarted. Parker Berberet tripled to start a Wisconsin rally in the top of the fourth. Tyler Roberts dropped a single over the drawn in infield with one out and Berberet scored for a 5-0 lead. Garza made it 6-0 in the top of the fifth. He jumped on the first pitch of the inning and crushed a home run to left-center. It was the second game in a row with a home run by Garza. Wagner tossed five shutout innings. The only hit he allowed was a two-out, seeing-eye single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. Wagner walked two and struck out five in his five innings before turning the game over to the bullpen. Roache padded Wisconsin's lead in the top of the seventh. He lined the first pitch from Quad Cities reliever Daniel Minor beyond the grass seating in left-center field for his second home run of the night. The homer, his twentieth of the season, put Roache in an exclusive Wisconsin Timber Rattlers club. Since the Timber Rattlers came into existence in 1995, only four other players - Khris Davis, Matt Hagen, Juan Silvestre, and Brock Kjeldgaard - had hit twenty or more home runs in a season. Davis, who hit 22 in 2010, holds the franchise record. Martin took over for Wagner in the bottom of the sixth and tossed four scoreless and hitless innings to pick up his second save of the season. Game two of the three game series at Modern Woodmen Park is Sunday evening. Wisconsin has scheduled Jorge Lopez (6-7, 5.22) as their starting pitcher. The River Bandits will send Brian Holmes (3-3, 3.27) to the mound. Game time is 5:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 4:40pm. I was going to type it again but I'll post this instead. In a welcome change the Rattlers pounded out 12 hits and 7 of them were for extra bases. Tyrone Taylor, Michael Garza, Victor Roache, and Parker Berberet all had multi-hit games and XBHs, while Michael Reed added an XBH of his own. Garrett Cooper left the game after being hit by a pitch, I missed what Mehring said about the substitution in the 9th other than his hit streak came to an end. Wisconsin Recap
  16. Rattlers get Strong showing for a win at Peoria Wisconsin starter tosses seven solid innings; Offense collects 12 hits By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers needed a win over the Peoria Chiefs on Friday night at Dozer Park to keep their playoff hopes alive. Starting pitcher Mike Strong did his part and the Rattlers offense did their part to get Wisconsin a much needed 4-2 win over the Chiefs. Wisconsin (49-63 overall, 20-27 second half) got out of the gate in a hurry. Tyrone Taylor started the game with a double. Mike Garza cracked a two-run homer to left-center with one out and the Rattlers had a 2-0 in the first inning. Taylor put Wisconsin up 3-0 in the top of the second. Max Walla doubled to start the inning and came in on Taylor's two-out single. The Chiefs (62-52, 24-23) cashed in a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second to cut into the Rattlers lead. Breyvic Valera drew a walk and stole second. Juan Herrera singled to right and that got Valera home to make the score 3-1. Walla and Taylor combined to add to the Rattlers lead in the fourth inning. Walla started the inning with a double and took third on a ground out. Taylor's two-out infield single was enough to score Walla and the Rattlers were up 4-1. Strong shut the Chiefs down from the RBI single by Herrera in the second and the end of the sixth as he retired fourteen straight Peoria batters. Jeremy Schaffer snapped that string with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schaffer's tenth home run of the season cut Wisconsin's lead to 4-2. Strong made it out of the seventh inning with no more runs scored against him. In his first start since June 7, Strong went seven innings to match his professional high for innings pitched in a game. He walked three, allowed two hits, and struck out six. Rodolfo Fernandez took over in the bottom of the eighth inning and worked around a two-out triple to send the game to the ninth with the Rattlers still up by two runs. Fernandez finished off the Chiefs with a 1-2-3 ninth inning and the Rattlers picked up the win. Walla, Taylor, and Garrett Cooper led the way for the Timber Rattlers offense. Walla picked up his third 4-hit game of the season with three doubles, a single, and two runs scored. Taylor, in his second game back off the disabled list had a double, two singles, a run scored, a stolen base, and two RBI. Cooper went 2-for-4 in the game for his fifth straight multi-hit game. Wisconsin's victory moved them back to within four games of the Chiefs for the second half Western Division Wild Card. There are 23 games remaining in the regular season. The Timber Rattlers continue their road trip on Saturday night with game one of a three game series against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park. 24. Final: Peoria 2, Wisconsin 1 (10 Innings) Chiefs tip Timber Rattlers in tenth Peoria knocksWisconsin farther back in playoff chase By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL - Charlie Tilson and the Peoria Chiefs dealt a serious blow to the odds of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers making a trip to the 2013 Midwest League playoffs to defend their 2012 Championship. Tilson tripled in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning on Thursday night to defeat the Rattlers 2-1. Wisconsin (48-63 overall, 19-27 second half) took advantage of a pair of Peoria errors in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead. Mike Garza reached on an error. Garrett Cooper followed with a one out single. Parker Berberet sent a high chopper off the plate to third and the throw to first was into the stands. That allowed Garza to score with Cooper moving to third and Berberet taking second base. But, the Rattlers couldn't extend their lead. Peoria (62-51, 24-22) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning against starting pitcher Ryan Gibbard. Breyvic Valera singled with two outs. The count ran full on Trevor Martin. Valera took off before Gibbard went to the plate on the 3-2 pitch and Gibbard stepped off to throw to second, but no one was covering the base since the runner was going to be off with the pitch and there wouldn't have been a play on a walk (Valera would have been moved to second) or a strikeout (the inning would have been over). Gibbard's payoff pitch to Martin was a single to right to drive in Valera with the tying run. Wisconsin dodged a Peoria run in the bottom of the fifth. Juan Herrera singled to start the inning, but was still at first with two outs. He stole second with Charlie Tilson at the plate. Tilson smacked a single to center and Herrera raced for the plate with the tie-breaking run. But, Herrera tripped and fell halfway between third and home. He got up and tried to score, but he was easily out at the plate. Both teams had a chance in the ninth. Chiefs starter Silfredo Garcia went back out for the top of the ninth and gave up a single to Garrett Cooper. Adrian Williams came on to pinch run for Cooper. Garcia hit Parker Berberet when the Wisconsin hitter squared to bunt. Max Walla was next and he bunted back to the mound. Garcia threw to third to force Williams. Then, Garcia got out of the inning by getting Alfredo Rodriguez to ground into a double play. Valera walked to start the bottom of the ninth. He was successfully sacrificed to second and the Rattlers elected to intentionally walk Ildemaro Vargas to set up a double play. Herrera sent a flare to shallow left and shortstop Orlando Arcia made a routine catch. The play turned into an inning ending double play because Valera thought the ball would drop and was two steps from third when Arcia made the catch. Valera was easily doubled up at second. Arcia started the top of the tenth with a single against Dixon Llorens, but Llorens would strike out the next three Rattlers. The Chiefs won the game in the tenth. CJ McElroy singled with one out. Tilson was next and he tripled into the corner in right field. McElroy scored without a play and the Chiefs picked up their third extra-innings win over the Rattlers at Dozer Park this season. Garcia allowed the one earned run and used just 87 pitches over a career-high nine innings with one walk and four strikeouts for a no decision. Cooper was the only Timber Rattler with a multi-hit game. The loss to the Chiefs knocked the Timber Rattlers five games behind Peoria in the second half Western Division Wild Card Race. There are just 24 games remaining in the regular season. The final game of the series is set for Friday night at Dozer Park. Mike Strong (2-3, 3.14) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Brad Watson (2-4, 3.76) is set to start for the Chiefs. Game time is 6:30pm.
