Snappers hold off Rattlers Beloit builds lead and hangs on for 9-6 win By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Beloit Snappers broke open a close game in the middle innings and held on to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 9-6 on Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities. Wisconsin loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but couldn't pull off the comeback. Dayton Alexander had four hits, including a pair of home runs, to lead Beloit to the win in game one of a four game series. The Snappers (65-46 overall, 22-19 second half) struck first. Aaron Shipman drew a leadoff walk against Wisconsin starter Preston Gainey. Shipman stole second and went to third on a grounder. A slow chopper up the third base line off the bat of Daniel Robertson led to a play at the plate. Shipman beat the throw and Beloit was up 1-0. Victor Roache tied the game with a line drive home run to left field as the leadoff batter in the second inning. Roache jumped on a 2-0 pitch to hit his sixteenth home run of the season. The teams traded runs in the third inning. Alexander singled and stole second to start the frame for the Snappers. Shipman doubled to right-center to drive in Alexander. Wisconsin (45-61, 16-25) answered in the bottom of the third. Orlando Arcia tripled to left-center with one out. Alfredo Rodriguez drove in Arcia with a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Alexander put the Snappers back in front with a leadoff home run in the top of the fifth. Then, a combination of errors and walks set Beloit up for a bigger inning. Errors on consecutive grounders by Shipman and Brett Vertigan put Snappers on second and third. A walk loaded the bases. Then, a walk to John Wooten forced in a run. Christopher Bostick singled to knock in the third run of the inning. A sacrifice fly from Matt Olson capped the scoring in the inning to put Beloit up 6-2. The Rattlers came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Rodriguez singled with two outs and Arcia at first base. The hit put runners on the corners. Michael Reed followed with a single to right to score Arcia. The throw to third to try to get Rodriguez wound up in the stands. That allowed Rodriguez to cross home plate and the Rattlers were down 6-4. Wisconsin went to Ryan Gibbard in the top of the sixth. Alexander welcomed Gibbard to the game with a home run in his second straight at bat. Alexander had hit two homers in his previous 344 professional at bats. Shipman followed Alexander's second home run with a single and he stole second. A two-out single by Wooten drove in Shipman. Beloit made it 9-4 with a run in the top of the seventh. Matt Olson walked and a wild pitch moved him to second base. Ryan Mathews singled to drive in Olson. Reed walked to start the Wisconsin eighth inning, but was at second base with two outs. Garrett Cooper doubled to right-center to knock in Reed. Parker Berberet followed with a single to drive in Cooper and the Rattlers were within 9-6. That single by Berberet also extended his current hitting streak to eighteen games. Stu Pudenz, who came on to get the final out of the eighth inning, made the game interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Roberts started the inning with an infield single. Arcia and Rodriguez each drew walks to load the bases. That put the tying runs on base and brought the winning run to the plate. Pudenz got the first out with a strikeout. Mike Garza came up and sent a slicing line drive down the right field line on the first pitch of his at bat. But, the ball dove foul and the runners had to reset to their bases. Two pitches later, Pudenz got Garza to ground into a game ending 4-6-3 double play. Game two of the four game series is set for Sunday afternoon. Wisconsin has Eric Semmelhack (1-6, 5.25) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Beloit has Dylan Covey (0-1, 5.68) set to start for them. Game time is 1:05pm. Sunday is a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Fans may play catch on the field for thirty minutes starting at noon. Timber Rattlers players will be available for an autograph session on the third base concourse after the game. Time Warner Cable customers can receive up to four half-priced reserved bleacher tickets when showing their TWC bill at time of ticket purchase. Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing Brewers-themed jerseys during the game for the second to last time this season. I apologize, I'm in no condition to analyze this game. Rattlers snap losing streak with big night Wisconsin hammers 17 hits in 7-4 win at Kane County By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were looking to end their four game losing streak as they took on the Kane County Cougars at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Friday Night. The Rattlers made it interesting, but pounded out seventeen hits on the way to a 7-4 victory. Lance Roenicke and Parker Berberet led the way for the offense with four hits apiece. On the pitching side of the ledger, Mike Strong provided ten strikeouts in four innings of relief and picked up the win. Victor Roache tripled off the wall in right field to start the second inning. Garrett Cooper followed with a single through the right side of the infield for a 1-0 lead. Cooper was erased on a double play so the Rattlers restarted the rally with a two out single by Roenicke. A wild pitch sent Roenicke to second. Chris McFarland's sinking line drive to right popped in and out of the glove of Reggie Golden, who made a diving attempt at the catch. Roenicke scored on the play and the Rattlers (45-60 overall, 16-24 second half) were up 2-0. Rattlers starting pitcher Austin Ross pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second and left the Cougars with the bases loaded in the third. Ross, who is still working his way back from Tommy John Surgery in May of 2012, left after three scoreless innings. Roenicke gave Ross a little going away present with a solo home run to left-center in the top of the fourth. Strong pitched a scoreless fourth and almost escaped the fifth without allowing a run. But Kane County (43-62, 13-26) tied the game in their half of the fifth. Oliver Zapata tripled to right-center to start the Cougars fifth. Strong struck out the next two batters, but hit Dan Vogelbach and walked Jeimer Candelario on four pitches to load the bases. Strong got ahead of Rock Shoulders 0-2, but the Kane County designated hitter lined the next pitch to the gap in left-center for a bases-clearing double to tie the game 3-3. Wisconsin responded in the top of the sixth. Berberet doubled to start the inning. Roenicke's sacrifice bunt turned into a bunt single to put runners at the corners. McFarland grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to score Berberet with the go ahead run. The Rattlers restarted another rally after this double play, too. Orlando Arcia drew a walk and Alfredo Rodriguez followed with a single to put Arcia on third base. Michael Reed, in his first game back from the disabled list, singled to get Arcia home for a 5-3 lead. Strong would work a 1-2-3 sixth, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Gioskar Amaya and Albert Almora singled to start the inning. Strong struck out Vogelbach for the first out of the inning - and his eight strikeout of the game. Candelario was next and he snuck a single up the middle to drive in Amaya and cut Wisconsin's lead to one run. Strong bounced back and struck out Shoulders and Marco Hernandez to end the frame with the tying and lead runs on base. Strong allowed four runs on six hits and struck out ten over his four innings of work. Wisconsin added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Berberet knocked in a run with a single to left, his fourth hit of the game. Roenicke followed with an RBI single, his fourth hit of the game, and the Rattlers led 7-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth. Rodolfo Fernandez, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, allowed a one out single in the bottom of the ninth to Almora. But, Fernandez ended the game with a flourish by striking out Vogelbach and Candelario to end the game. The three Wisconsin pitchers - Ross (3), Strong (10), and Fernandez (3) - combined for 16 strikeouts. Roenicke had a scored twice and knocked in two runs to go along with his four hits in Friday's game. Berberet extended his hitting streak to seventeen games as he went 4-for-5 in the game. That is the longest hitting streak by a Timber Rattler this season and ties him with Cody Hawn for the fourth longest hitting streak in team history. The Timber Rattlers return home on Saturday to begin a four game series with the Beloit Snappers. Preston Gainey (4-5, 6.08) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit sends Seth Streich (10-6, 3.82) to the bump. Game time is 6:35pm. Saturday night is Jimmy Buffett Night. There will be plenty of tropical feelings around the park and South of Disorder, a Jimmy Buffett tribute band, will be playing a postgame concert on the club level. Kane County's big inning sends Rattlers to fourth straight loss Cougars get seven straight hits and score five runs in sixth inning By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers grabbed an early 2-0 lead against the Kane County Cougars on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. But, Kane County rallied with a big sixth inning to defeat the Rattlers 6-2. Parker Berberet ended one streak and extended another with his leadoff double in the top of the second for the Rattlers. Before the two-base hit by Berberet, Wisconsin's last 24 hits had been singles. Berberet also pushed his hitting streak to 16 games with the double. That matches the longest hitting streak by a Timber Rattler this season. Tyrone Taylor had a 16-game hitting streak earlier this season. Max Walla cashed in the double with a single to center to send Berberet home for a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin (44-60 overall, 15-24 second half) added to their lead in the top of the third. Lance Roenicke was hit by a pitch with one out. Mike Garza extended his hitting streak to eleven games with a single to right-center to send Roenicke around to third. Roenicke scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars (43-61, 13-25) pulled to within a run in the bottom of the third inning. Oliver Zapata hit a solo home run to right to leadoff the frame and make the score 2-1. That home run was the only hit allowed by Wisconsin starter Jorge Lopez through five innings. But, the game turned on Lopez and the Timber Rattlers in the bottom of the sixth. Jose Dore hit a leadoff home run to start the Kane County half of the sixth to tie the game. That home run by Dore started a string of seven straight hits by Cougars batters to would lead to five runs and a 6-2 lead by the time Dore made the final out of the inning. Gioskar Amaya followed Dore's homer with a single. An errant pickoff throw and a wild pitch by Lopez sent Amaya around to third. Wisconsin brought the infield in to cut down the lead run at the plate, but Albert Almora singled through the center of the diamond to drive in Amaya for a 3-2 Kane County lead. That was the end of the line for Lopez. Dan Vogelbach greeted Rattlers reliever Chris Razo to the game with a double into the corner in left that drove Almora home. Jeimer Candelario singled to right to put runners on the corners. Rock Shoulders continued the onslaught with a double into the corner in right to drive in the final two runs of the inning that put Kane County up 6-2. Willson Contreras had the final hit of the sequence with an infield single, but the Cougars would not score again in the sixth. The would not need to score again. The Timber Rattlers would get base runners in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, but did not threaten to score as they took their fourth loss in a row. Wisconsin had nine hits in the game, but just one extra base hit, the double by Berberet. In the three game series at Kane County, the Rattlers have 30 hits - 29 singles - and have scored seven runs. The final game of the series is Friday night. Austin Ross (0-0, 7.71) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County will send Michael Heesch (3-8, 3.82) to the hill. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. Final: Kane County 6, Wisconsin 3 Late homers sink Rattlers Cougars get back-to-back jacks in decisive eight inning rally By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers could not shake the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and it cost them. Jeimer Candelario and Rock Shoulders hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Kane County to a 6-3 comeback win. Wisconsin (44-59 overall, 15-23 second half) got on the scoreboard first. Orlando Arcia started the third inning with a single. Alfredo Rodriguez was next and he chopped a single through the right side of the infield. Arcia rounded second, but was going back to the bag when right fielder Reggie Golden overran the ball. Arcia took off for third and Golden's throw to third wound up in the stands. The two errors by Golden on the play allowed Arcia to score and Rodriguez to end up at third base. Lance Roenicke got Rodriguez home from third with a grounder to short for a 2-0 lead. Rattlers starting pitcher Tyler Wagner went out for the bottom of the third inning and struck out the side in order on nine pitches. Wagner allowed one hit and struck out seven through his first five innings. But Kane County got to him in the sixth. Gioskar Amaya started the inning with a double and an error on the play let him take third base. Albert Almora drive in Amaya with a grounder to short. Dan Vogelbach and Candelario singled to set up Shoulders. The Kane County first baseman blooped a single fair down the line in left to score Vogelbach with the tying run. The teams traded runs in the seventh inning. Arcia singled to start the top of the inning and was on the run when Rodriguez sent a slow roller towards short. Candelario, the third baseman, cut the ball off and threw to first for the out on Rodriguez. Arcia saw that no one was covering third and took off for the extra base. Hernandez, the shortstop, raced to cover and was there to take the throw from Shoulders. But Hernandez missed the ball and Arcia scampered home for the run to put the Rattlers up 3-2. Kane County (42-61, 12-25) responded in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Harvey Martin. Willson Contreras singled to start the frame. He stole second and went to third on a throwing error with one out and Amaya at the plate. The Timber Rattlers brought the infield in to cut down the run at the plate. Martin got Amaya to send a grounder to short, but the ball was bobbled to let Contreras score the tying run. Martin walked Vogelbach to start the bottom of the eighth. Candelario followed with a two-run home run to right to put Kane County up 5-3. Shoulders was next and he launched his seventeenth home run of the season. The back-to-back blasts put Kane County up 6-3. Chris McFarland singled with one out in the top of the ninth against Michael Hamann, but Hamann got a game-ending 1-6-3 double play to send the Rattlers to their third straight loss. Wisconsin catcher Parker Berberet singled in the sixth inning to extend his hitting streak to fifteen games, the longest active streak in the Midwest League. Third baseman Mike Garza had a pair of singles and extended his hitting streak to ten games. Game three of the series is Thursday night. Jorge Lopez (5-6, 5.31) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Tayler Scott (4-6, 4.33) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. I already talked about Tyler Wagner above, obviously I like him quite a bit. Once again the T-Rats went without an extra base hit, however Michael Garza, Chris McFarland, and Orlando Arcia all had 2 hits a piece. Wisconsin Recap Not many 1-2-3 innings for the Rattlers.

Tyler's struggles come down to command. I like his slider quite a bit, his change is good in spurts, his FB sits in the low 90s but can touch the mid 90s. When he's on he's moving the ball around the zone, when he struggles he gets behind hitters and ends up in predictable FB counts. It's not like he's consistently high, left, right, or low, when he's missing he's just missing everywhere. He has a straighter FB, I haven't sat behind homeplate to see how much it moves, but it doesn't stand out from the CF camera like Ynoa's did for example. As college closer he doesn't necessarily have the experience or mileage on his arm, I think he's still a work in progress from just a pitching point of view. I hold out hope for him, I don't see him as a potential top of the rotation guy, but I like him in the same way I liked Gagnon last year, a mid to back of the rotation guy in MLB. He could always start outpitching his stuff like a Marcum and become a top of the rotation pitcher but I have a hard time going down that road for any pitcher as those over achievers are the exception to the rule. My best guess today would be that as an MLB pitcher he'll show flashes but he'll never have the command to reach that #2 type status. If he doesn't cut it as a starter my gut feeling is that he'd make a pretty decent reliever. Though I will say that when Tyler is on he can be quite filthy, so I remain hopeful. Unfortunately we won't get to see him pitch again after this season until he hits AA, but the flip side is that it should be neat to see how far (hopefully) he's progressed.

Yes, of course, because that's the nature of professional sports. You have to constantly turn over your roster to remain competitive or players get old, expensive, and unproductive which then forces a full blown rebuild. There's a wide gulf between reloading (turning over a roster) and rebuilding, the 2 concepts are completely disimilar the fact of which is apparently is still escaping some. If we end up in a full rebuild I'll be completely pissed because it wasn't necessary or inevitable, poor roster management decisions would have led to that point and I honestly don't care if it's MA or DM. Both guys have repeatedly said they are on the same page, I don't think you can fault one over the other for the state of the franchise. I much prefer Mark A. to the Seligs, but if he's going to meddle and take a narrow view focused on just on the MLB team year in and year out, then we can do better than him as well, just like we can do better than Melvin. We're a little fish in a big pond and need to operate accordingly in order to maintain the talent level of the organization and by extension the MLB club year in and year out.

Rattlers fall in Kane County Cougars edge Rattlers 4-2 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers lost a tough game to the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday night at fifth Third Bank Ballpark to open a four game series. The Rattlers tied the game 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but the Cougars scored single runs in their half of the seventh and eighth innings to take the lead. Then, Kane County held off a Rattlers rally in the top of the ninth to pick up the win. Reggie Golden gave Kane County (41-61 overall, 11-25 second half) the lead in the second inning. Golden lined a home run to left to leadoff the frame and the Cougars were up 1-0. Kane County added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. They had runners at second and third with two outs. A pitch from Eric Semmelhack got away from catcher Tyler Roberts for a passed ball to let the run score for a 2-0 advantage. Justin Amlung, the Kane County starter, was making his first start of the season and pitched three scoreless innings. Nathan Dorris was next and he started his outing with three scoreless innings. But, Wisconsin (44-58, 15-22) got to him for two runs in the seventh. Parker Berberet and Orlando Arcia started the inning with singles. Kane County was expecting a bunt from Roberts, but Roberts smacked a single to center to drive in Berberet. Adrian Williams was next and he dropped a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Alfredo Rodriguez sent a chopper to short that got Arcia home from third with the tying run. But, the Cougars went back in front in the bottom of the seventh. Consecutive singles by Carlos Escobar and Oliver Zapata started the inning against lefty Taylor Wall. A wild pitch and a strikeout led to Wisconsin walking Albert Almorao set up Wall against the left-handed Dan Vogelbach. Vogelbach sent a flyball to medium center where Adrian Williams made the catch. Contreras, the Kane County catcher tagged to try and score. The throw home looked to make the play close, but Roberts couldn't handle a head-high bounce on the one-hop throw and Contreras scored the go-ahead run. Kane County added a run in the bottom of the eighth. Contreras drew a walk with two outs and none on base. Oliver Zapata followed with a triple to left-center to send Contreras home for a 4-2 lead. Wisconsin gave a valiant effort in the top of the ninth. Berberet singled - his third hit of the night, but was erased on a force play. Roberts singled - his third hit of the night, too - and Williams drew a walk after being down 0-2 in the count to load the bases with one away. But, Stephen Perakslis got Alfredo Rodriguez to ground into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to preserve the win for the Cougars. The Timber Rattlers outhit the Cougars 12-8 in the game, but hit into three double plays in the game and wound up on the short end of the score. Berberet extended his current hitting streak to fourteen games with his first hit of the night. Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Wisconsin sends Tyler Wagner (8-8, 3.51) to the mound as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Cougars have Felix Pena (4-3, 3.62) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is noon. Lowery doesn't let Rattlers rally Bees starter tosses complete game in 5-1 win By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Burlington Bees 6-5. Wisconsin did not get a chance to repeat that feat on Monday night. Burlington starting pitcher Patrick Lowery took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth at Time Warner Cable Field at retired Wisconsin in order for the first complete game of his professional career. Burlington (40-61 overall, 14-22 second half) scored first. Pedro Tiribio doubled to left with one out. Wade Hinkle doubled to center with two outs to drive in Tiribio for the 1-0 lead. The Bees threatened in the top of the fourth. Exicardo Cayones tripled to start the inning. But, Rattlers starter Ryan Gibbard stranded Cayones at third by striking out the next two batters and getting the final out with a popup on the infield. Lowery allowed one hit through 4-1/3 innings and had retired nine straight Wisconsin batters. Then, Garrett Cooper stepped to the plate with one out in the fifth. Cooper cracked a 2-1 pitch well over the left field wall for his first Midwest League home run. The solo shot tied the game 1-1. Parker Berberet extended his hitting streak to thirteen games with a single and took second on an error immediately after the home run by Cooper. But, that would be it for the Wisconsin offense. But, the Bees responded in the top of the sixth. Toribio singled with one out and stole second. He went to third on a throwing error. Wisconsin brought the infield in with Wade Hinkle at the plate. Cayones hit a hard one-hopper to the left of Chris McFarland at second. McFarland lunged for the ball and threw to the plate. But, the ball short-hopped the plate and bounced off the mask of catcher Parker Berberet. Toribio scored and Cayones took second base. Hinkle was next and he lined a ball off the foot of Gibbard. Gibbard went to the ground as the ball rolled down the mound and onto the grass back toward the plate. Berberet charged out to field the ball, but that left the plate uncovered. Cayones broke for the plate from third base as Berberet retraced his steps. Gibbard limped after the ball and got to it, but flipped it high and to the backstop. Cayones scored and Hinkle wound up at second base. Gibbard left the game in favor of Preston Gainey after the play. Zach Wright welcomed Gainey to the game with a two-run home run to the Bees bullpen. That put Burlington up 5-1. Wisconsin (44-57, 15-21) couldn't get anything going against Lowery after the single by Berberet in the fifth inning. Lowery retired the final fourteen batters of the game to earn the complete game victory for the Bees. He allowed three hits, walked none, and struck out six for his fourth win of the season. The Timber Rattlers begin a four game road trip to the Chicago suburbs on Tuesday night. Wisconsin takes on the Kane County Cougars in Geneva, Illinois. Eric Semmelhack (1-6, 5.44) is scheduled to start for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has not announced a starter for Tuesdays game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm. Tune for the radio broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. HOME RUNS: BUR: Zach Wright (1st, 1 on in 6th inning off Preston Gainey, 1 out) WIS: Garrett Cooper (1st, 0 on in 5th inning off Patrick Lowery, 1 out) WP: Patrick Lowery (4-6) LP: Ryan Gibbard (4-3) TIME: 2:20 ATTN: 2,687 Wisconsin Boxscore Mehring and I doubled up on thoughts again, but I'm not going to go back and edit my post as I'm wiped out. Unfortunately all of WI's young players are slumping at the same time: Orlando Arcia, Chris McFarland, and Tyrone Taylor (who batted 1-3 tonight) are all hitting under .200 in their last 10 games. Mehring noted that young players routinely struggle at this point in their first full season, but I don't feel any better about it. Pat Lowery who was drafted in the 21st round last year just mixed his pitches very well, he wasn't blowing hitters away or all that nasty in general. He just pounded the zone and only had 80 pitches going into the 9th, Arcia led off the 9th with a good AB which jumped his pitch count up, but he still pitched a complete game with just 95 total pitches. Lowery faced just 3 batters over the minimum. Garrett Cooper's HR was just crushed. Wisconsin Recap I felt this was Gibbard's best sequence of the game. Williams actually fielded and bobbled the triple, not sure why Walla is named, though I guess they did almost collide. Burlington Top of the 4th Exicardo Cayones triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Max Walla. Wade Hinkle strikes out swinging. Zach Wright strikes out swinging. Garrett Cannizaro pops out to second baseman Christopher McFarland. Wisconsin Gameday

Gainey has been drilled by back to back ground balls. The first in the heel which ricocheted to Arcia whom smartly went to 3rd and got the lead runner. The second hit him in the right shoulder then he picked it up and threw wildly to first. These weird plays have happened at TWC field in bunches all season going back to the 3 straight games where runners were hit by batted balls. The T-Rats now have 4 errors in the game.

The Rattler defense and pitching fell apart. Gibbard's removal appeared to be precautionary, it looked like he took the ball off the ankle.
