Brewers earn series sweep in pitchers duel By Brett Billings The Helena Brewers earned a series sweep over the Missoula Osprey in a pitchers' duel on Thursday night at Kindrick field. In a game that lasted just over two hours, the Brewers would only manufacture one run, but it was all the pitching staff needed. Matt Miller, Tyler Thornburg, and Robert Currie combined to blank the Osprey as Helena improved to 4-0 on the year. Miller (1-0,0.00) started on the hill for the Brewers. He struck out four and walked only one in his first professional start. He would eventually receive the win. Helena's lone run came from the bat of Tony Pechek in the fifth inning. Shea Vucinich led things off by getting breezed by a fastball from Missoula's Daniel Taylor. John Bivens advanced the runner by laying down a well-executed bunt. Pecheck then singled in Vucinich by driving a pitch through the hole at second base. Thornburg, a third round draft choice from Charleston Southern pitched the next two frames without any trouble. Currie got the save by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth. The Brewers go on the road tomorrow to face the Great Falls Voyagers in a weekend series. Action will return to Kindrick Field on Monday, as the Brewers take on the Billings Mustangs in the first game of a five-game home stand. First pitch Monday is scheduled for 7:05 with gates opening at 6:00. Missoula Top 9th Jae Yun Kim grounds out, third baseman Michael Walker to first baseman Cody Hawn. Richie Rowland singles on a fly ball to left fielder John Bivens. Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Domingo Soriano replaces Richie Rowland. Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Chris Jarrett replaces Raul Navarro. Chris Jarrett flies into double play, center fielder Franklin Romero to first baseman Cody Hawn. Domingo Soriano doubled off 1st.

Final: Helena 1, Missoula (Arizona) 0 Helena Boxscore I won't post this until the Helena game story comes through, but I hope Franklin Romero gets his due for that excellent diving catch and double play he started to the end the game. Matt Miller started his pro career in fine fashion. He went 5IP, allowing 5 hits, 1BB, and 4Ks, he wasn't dominant, but he was effective. Tyler Thornburg also had a fine debut, Missoula hitters fouled off a ton of his pitches but he went 2 scoreless with 3Ks. Rob Currie closed out the game pitching the final 2 innings. The real pitching story in the game was Osprey starter Daniel Taylor who went 8IP... allowing only 4 hits, no walks, and he struck out 11. With only 4 hits, no Brewer had multiple hits nor did the H-Crew manage an XBH. Helena Recap Helena Pitchers only had 1 clean inning all game, but kept Missoula off the board. Here's the only run of the contest. Helena Bottom 5th Shea Vucinich hit by pitch. John Dishon called out on strikes. John Bivens grounds out, pitcher Daniel Taylor to first baseman Bobby Stone. Shea Vucinich to 2nd. Tony Pechek singles on a ground ball to right fielder Roberto Rodriguez. Shea Vucinich scores. Carlos George grounds out, third baseman Eric Groff to first baseman Bobby Stone. This was a huge play... the Missoula announcer was shocked Missoula Top 6th Pitcher Change: Tyler Thornburg replaces Matthew Miller. Adam Eaton walks. Eric Groff singles on a line drive to right fielder Reggie Keen. Adam Eaton to 2nd. With Bobby Stone batting, Tyler Thornburg picks off Adam Eaton at 2nd on throw to Carlos George. Bobby Stone strikes out swinging. Roberto Rodriguez strikes out swinging. edit. I didn't mean to post this yet, game story coming when posted.

I've been resisting commenting on these Workplace Safety commericals during the Helena broadcasts. They started pretty tame a couple of years back, but they sure aren't pulling any punches this season, I find them comical. Have to love the people of Montana, I'm not sure commercials like that would fly anywhere else.

Hunstville Stars Win Late In Jacksonville Connor Shreve The Stars battled through a low scoring affair Thursday to beat the South Division Jacksonville Suns by one run at the Baseball Grounds in Jacksonville, FL. After both squads matched zeros through six, Huntsville struck first. Steffan Wilson struck out to lead off the seventh but the third strike wild pitch made for a tough play on Jacksonville catcher Vinny Rotino. Rotino missed his mark on the throw to first and allowed Wilson to take second base on the error. Taylor Green moved Wilson over with a long out to center. With the infield in it briefly looked as if the Suns would barely escape the trouble when Dayton Buller grounded out to the right side for the second put out of the inning. But again luck proved more loyal to the Stars than their opponent as Suns pitcher Andrew Miller again delivered a wild pitch low which deflected off Rotino’s gear in to the air and behind him far enough to entice Wilson to take home for the first run of the game. Jacksonville came right back by breaking up Huntsville’s no hitter and taking the lead in the bottom half. Rotino struck first, in perhaps a show of redemption, with a single to right field which touched down just in front of a charging Steffan Wilson. The next batter Mark Saccomanno turned on a pitch and produced his first hit of the contest, two RBI home run that may have seemed like a game winner at the time. After a single and walk followed, Rivas departed without having picked up an out in the inning, leaving the work to Robert Hinton. Hinton did his job efficiently, needing only nine pitches to work out of the inning. The first two Stars batters were quickly retired in the eighth inning facing new pitcher Garrett Parcell but still managed a dramatic comeback. Lorenzo Cain singled and stole his eighteenth base of the season prior to Caleb Gindl’s RBI triple, his first of 2010. Zelous Wheeler then continued his almost robotic run production with a game winning single that brought Gindle in for the third run of the game for the Stars. Rivas again dominated minus one inning, the seventh was the trouble inning for Huntsville’s best starter. He gave up two singles, a walk and a two run home run in the inning but received a no decision thanks to the Stars comeback. Both runs Rivas allowed were earned over six complete innings on just three hits. The Stars starter struck out six while walking four. Robert Hinton and Jim Henderson did not allow a single hit in their combined three innings out of the pen. Hinton picked up the win, his second, and Henderson managed his third save of the year. The Stars now own a 5-3 season record over the Suns with a chance to build upon that on Friday night. Game four of the current six game series is scheduled to start at 6:05 (CDT) in Jacksonville.

BC falls to Lakeland in second half opener By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA - The Brevard County Manatees started the second half of the season on the wrong foot with a 3-1 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night. Despite striking out 11 hitters in seven innings, Cody Scarpetta was saddled with the loss as he gave up a three-run homer in the third to Billy Nowlin. Scarpetta's runs were unearned due to Brent Wyatt reaching first on a passed ball on a dropped third strike by Anderson De La Rosa. Brevard County's lone run came in the fourth when Angel Salome drove in Erik Komatsu with a one-out double to right field. The Manatees had chances late in the game to tie the game when Josh Prince and Scott Krieger led off the eighth with back-to-back singles. De La Rosa would then rip one to short, but Gustavo Nunez snagged the line drive out of the air for the first out. Matt Cline struck out swinging for the second out and after Lester Oliveros came in in relief for the Flying Tigers, Sergio Miranda grounded into a force play to end the inning. Brevard County kept hope alive in the ninth with a one-out walk drawn by Angel Salome. Sean Halton then lifted a ball deep to left field, but got under it just a little too much as it was grabbed at the warning track. Brock Kjeldgaard popped out to the pitcher to halt the comeback The Manatees and Flying Tigers will continue their series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m.

Final: Huntsville 3, Jacksonville (Florida) 2 Huntsville Boxscore Amaury Rivas was cruising along (no hitter) until the 7th when he gave up single, homer, single, walk and was pulled. His final line was 6IP, 3H, 2ER, 4BB, and 6K. Robert Hinton was excellent in his 2 innings of relief stranding both of Rivas' inherited runners, he allowed no hits, no walks, and struck out 4, earning the win. Jim Henderson closed it out for his 3rd save of the season. No Stars had more than 1 hit but Brett Lawrie doubled and Caleb Gindl tripled. This will be the last time I mention him because I feel bad since he's been miscast all year, but Zelous Wheeler did commit his 21st error of the season. Taylor Green has been laboring for a while now only hitting .198 over his last 10 games. Huntsville Recap The game changing Jacksonville 7th and Huntsville 8th, hooray for the Stars pulling a H-Crew. Jacksonville Bottom 7th Vinny Rottino singles on a fly ball to left fielder Steffan Wilson. Mark Saccomanno homers (6) on a fly ball to left field. Vinny Rottino scores. Final: Lakeland (Detroit) 3, Brevard County 1 Brevard County Boxscore So remember last week when I said Cody Scarpetta made progress in that outing? I've been waiting for a line like this from him all year. He went 7IP, 5H, 3R, 0ER, 2BB, and 10Ks! That's what I'm talking about young man. Mike Ramlow and Ruben Flores each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. No Manatee had more than 1 hit, Erik Komatsu and Angel Salome (DH) each doubled for BC. Brevard County Recap A very drab recap as one would guess with Scarpetta pitching dominantly and the offense not doing much. This game turned on a Passed Ball, but in close games it's always a little thing that does you in. Lakeland Top 3rd Christopher White lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Gustavo Nunez lines out to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Brandon Douglas doubles (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Scott Krieger. Brent Wyatt strikes out swinging. Passed ball by catcher Anderson De La Rosa. Brent Wyatt to 1st. Billy Nowlin homers (7) on a line drive to right field. Brandon Douglas scores. Brent Wyatt scores. Jordan Lennerton strikes out swinging.

Final: Helena 10, Missoula (Arizona) 6 Helena does it again, comes from five behind to win 10-6 Brewers earn the series win with another dramatic finishBy Brett Billings The Helena Brewers defeated the Missoula Osprey Wednesday night the only way they've shown how - from behind. The Brewers would come from a five-run deficit for the second time in two nights to beat the Osprey in front of a crowd of 1,401 at Kindrick Field. The Brewers (3-0) have now trailed each game by at least four runs despite the perfect start. Seth Lintz started on the hill for the Brewers, but the 20 year-old right-hander wasn't able to complete the first inning. Adrian Rosario came in with two outs in the frame, but a lone single drove in an inherited runner to give the Osprey a 4-0 advantage. Rosario held Missoula (0-3) in check over the next four innings, giving up one run and striking out six. Evan Frederickson, a supplemental first round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008, took the hill in sixth inning. The 6'6" 230 lb southpaw from Oak Hill, Virginia was nearly perfect. His only hit was by way of an Osprey homerun in the sixth inning to increase the Osprey lead to 6-1. Helena decided not to wait until the ninth inning to begin their comeback. Greg Hopkins singled through the hole at shortstop to start the home-halve of the seventh. Connor Lind singled to right-center field after a bunt single from John Dishon. Three consecutive doubles from Carlos George, Reggie Keen, and Franklin Romero would make it a two-run game. Later in the inning, John Dishon singled in two runs to give Helena the lead. Brian Garman relieved Frederickson in the ninth inning, looking for Helena's third straight victory. He found it after facing four batters, surrendering only a walk and securing the 10-6 victory.. Frederickson received the win. His three innings of work gave the Brewers a chance of a comeback, which was taken advantage of. He left the game after the eighth inning, finishing with six strikeouts to no walks. Four Brewers had multi-hit games. Reggie Keen, who was making his first professional start, finished the game 3-5 with three RBI. He was also the winning run Monday and Tuesday night after pinch running each game. Franklin Romero Jr., who led the Arizona League in triples in 2009, also had three hits, one by way of homerun. He's batting a solid .417 over the first three games of the Pioneer League season. A pleasant surprise of the opening series of the 2010 season has been the play of Carlos George, both at the plate and in the field. He was 3-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Dishon, who was taken in the 42nd round of the 2010 draft from LSU, finished the night with two hits and an RBI. The Brewers look to sweep Missoula tomorrow night at Kindrick Field. RHP Matt Miller (0-0, 0.00) will start on the mound for Helena. The Missoula Osprey will send RHP Daniel Taylor (0-0,0.00) to the mound in hopes of avoiding the series sweep. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm with gates opening at 6:00. Helena Boxscore I covered Seth Lintz's first inning up above. Is it wrong that I'm still high on Rosario and Frederickson? When they both throw strikes the are nearly unhittable... the rest of the time they've been pretty frustrating. I'm loving the very thorough site summaries tonight, they are making my job very easy. For the 3rd straight game Reggie Keen was involved in moving the winning run across the plate and he was Steve Wendt's player of the of the game. Helena Recap The rough Missoula 1st. Missoula Top 1st Chris Jarrett walks. Adonys Canelo grounds out, second baseman Connor Lind to first baseman Cody Hawn. Chris Jarrett to 2nd. Final: Brevard County 10, Clearwater (Phlly) 5 Manatees rally, end first half with win De La Rosa drives in four as BC tops Clearwater VIERA - The Brevard County Manatees ended the first half of the 2010 Florida State League season on a high note with a 10-5 comeback win against the Clearwater Threshers on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. After spotting the Threshers a 3-0 lead after 3 ½ innings, the Manatees broke through in the fourth for four runs. Erik Komatsu led the inning off with a walk and then after back-to-back singles by Angel Salome and Sean Halton, Brock Kjeldgaard reached on an error as two runs scored. Two batters later, Anderson De La Rosa came through with a two-out two-run single to make it 4-3 in favor of the Manatees. Brevard County starter Wily Peralta would give up two more runs in the fifth as Stephen Susdorf's double made it 5-4 Threshers. Peralta's night would finish after five innings as he allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, while walking three and striking out two. Corey Frerichs relieved Peralta and threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings while allowed three hits and three walks and fanning six. A one-out RBI single by Komatsu in the bottom of the seventh would tie the game at 5-5 as Matt Cline came around to score. The Manatees would leave no doubt in the decision as they plated five in the eighth on six hits. Scott Krieger's one-out ground-rule double to left field scored one and De La Rosa followed with his second two-run single of the game to make it 8-5. Sergio Miranda and Komatsu added two-out RBI singles to close out the scoring on a 10-5 Manatees victory. The Threshers made it interesting in the ninth by loading the bases with two outs, but Andre Lamontagne came in and got the final out for his first save of the season. Cline, Komatsu, Salome and De La Rosa all had two hits each, while De La Rosa's hits drove in four runs. Brevard County closes the first half of the season with a 27-42 record. The Manatees will continue their six-game homestand and open up the second half of the season with a three-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers beginning on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m Brevard County Boxscore Well BC wraps up the first half, this team just isn't anywhere near as fun to follow as last year's team was, not a surprise considering what happened at WI last season. Wily Peralta just refuses to dominate batters this season, I had very high hopes coming into the season. His final line 8H, 4ER, 3BB, 2SO, and 1HR in 5IP. Corey Frerichs and Andre Lamontange continued their excellent seasons as noted above. Angel Salome was your DH and the multi hit games were noted in the game summary. Final, 7 Innings, Game 2: Memphis (St. Louis) 11, Nashville 7 Redbirds Complete Doubleheader Sweep Of Sounds MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds completed a sweep of a doubleheader against the Nashville Sounds with an 11-7 victory on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park. With the pair of losses, Nashville (39-34) fell back out of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related_content_header.gif · AUDIO: Luis Cruz RBI Double http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related-content-capper.gifThe nightcap featured a barrage of five Memphis home runs against Sounds pitching, the most allowed by the club this season. It was a back-and-forth battle with several lead changes in the first few innings. Allen Craig gave the Redbirds an early lead with a two-run, first-inning homer off Nashville starter Marty McLeary. The Sounds tied it in the second when shortstop Luis Cruz ripped an RBI double, upping his team-leading RBI total to 41 on the year, and Johnny Raburn added a run-scoring groundout. Memphis surged back in front, 3-2, in the home half of the second on Kevin Howard's fourth home run of the year, a one-out solo shot to right. Nashville regained the lead in the third with a three-run frame against Memphis starter Lance Lynn. Trent Oeltjen (3-for-4), Norris Hopper, and Ray Olmedo opened the inning with consecutive singles, the third of which by Olmedo tied the contest at 3-3. After a Brendan Katin sacrifice fly pushed the visitors back in front, Joe Koshansky (2-for-3) singled to right to plate Hopper to make it a 5-3 game. The Redbirds regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third with a five-run outburst against McLeary (1-6), who drew the loss after surrendering eight runs in just three innings of work on the night. The right-hander's ERA rose to 12.14 through 11 PCL games this season. In the Memphis third, Daniel Descalso (single) and Craig (double) had RBI knocks before catcher Bryan Anderson belted a three-run homer, his eighth roundtripper of the year, to extend the lead to 8-3. The Redbirds tacked on two more runs in the fourth against Nashville reliever Mitch Stetter using back-to-back, two-out homers off the bats of Tyler Greene and Descalso. Nashville plated its final runs on a Katin RBI groundout in the fifth and Oeltjen's two-out RBI single in the sixth before Greene tallied the last run of the night with a sixth-inning double for the Redbirds to bring the score to its final 11-7. Lynn (5-5) squared his record on the year with the nightcap victory for Memphis despite allowing seven runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings of action. The teams continue the series with a 7:05 matchup on Thursday. Milwaukee Brewers left-hander Doug Davis (0-0, 3.00) will make his second rehab start for the Sounds in the contest. Memphis will counter with right-hander Adam Ottavino (5-3, 3.97). Nasvhille Boxscore So remember when I said Jeff Bennett got beat around? I lied... Marty McLeary was tuned up for 8 ER on 7H and 2BB in his 3 innings of work. Is McLeary really better depth than Rivas or Rogers? If not why are we messing around? Unfortunately a solid offensive effort in Game 2 went for naught. The Nashville site summary was once again very thorough, I have nothing more to add as the hitting lines for all of the batters that played a key role were included in the summary. Mat Gamel had a pinch-hit single. Nashville Recap read at your at own risk... don't worry, the wind must have been blowing out so only one of those HRs was legit.. Memphis Bottom 1st Jon Jay singles on a ground ball to center fielder Norris Hopper. Tyler Greene singles on a line drive to left fielder Trent Oeltjen. Jon Jay to 3rd. Final, 7 Innings: Memphis (St. Louis) 7, Nashville 1 Redbirds Defeat Sounds In Twinbill Opener, 7-1 MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis right-hander Chuckie Fick turned in a solid start in his Triple-A debut and the Redbirds connected for a pair of three-run homers against Nashville pitching to post a 7-1 victory over the Sounds on Wednesday evening at AutoZone Park in the first game of a doubleheader. Fick (1-0), called up from Double-A Springfield for the outing, held Nashville to one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings to notch his first win at the Triple-A level. It was a contest filled with missed opportunities for the Sounds, who left seven runners stranded in scoring position over the seven innings. The Sounds had Fick on the ropes early, loading the bases in the first inning before the young hurler struck out team RBI leader Luis Cruz to escape the jam unscathed. Nashville got on the board in the top of the second against Fick when Adam Stern (2-for-3) and Martin Maldonado opened the frame with back-to-back doubles (audio available at the link above) to net a 1-0 lead. Maldonado has hit safely in a season-best four straight contests for Nashville, with extra-base knocks in each of his last three tilts, after enduring a team season-high 24 at-bat hitless stretch throughout early June. Memphis rallied to grab a 3-1 advantage against Sounds starter Sam Narron in the bottom of the second when second baseman Donovan Solano smacked a three-run homer to left, his second longball of the season. The Redbirds put the game on ice in the sixth against reliever Jeff Bennett, plating four insurance runs to stretch the lead to 7-1. Veteran infielder Ruben Gotay provided the big hit of the frame, a three-run homer that landed on the grass berm beyond the left field wall. Bennett was ejected by home plate umpire Jason Milsap following Gotay's blast. Josh Kinney recorded the final four outs for Memphis to notch his third save of the year. Narron (1-3) took his third loss in three starts for the Sounds after allowing three runs in five innings of work. Nashville BoxscoreSam Narron was just okay as noted above, the HR he gave up was the turning point. Jeff Bennett really got beat around in his 2/3 of an inning. David Johnson finished off the pitching effort for the Sounds. Adam Stern was 2-3 with a double, the only other XBH was Martin Maldonado's double. Mat Gamel was 1-4 with a K. The game summary pretty much said it all. Nashville Recap All the damage came in the 2bd and the 6th. Memphis Bottom 2nd Joe Mather singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Mat Gamel. Daniel Descalso walks. Joe Mather to 2nd. Ruben Gotay grounds into a force out, second baseman Ray Olmedo to shortstop Luis Cruz. Joe Mather to 3rd. Daniel Descalso out at 2nd. Ruben Gotay to 1st. Donovan Solano homers (2) on a fly ball to left field. Joe Mather scores. Ruben Gotay scores. Matt Pagnozzi strikes out swinging. Chuckie Fick grounds out, shortstop Luis Cruz to first baseman Joe Koshansky. Memphis Bottom 6th Pitcher Change: Jeff Bennett replaces Sam Narron, batting 9th. Tyler Greene singles on a line drive to left fielder Adam Stern. Allen Craig walks. Tyler Greene to 2nd. With Joe Mather batting, wild pitch by Jeff Bennett, Tyler Greene to 3rd. Allen Craig to 2nd. Joe Mather singles on a ground ball to left fielder Adam Stern. Tyler Greene scores. Allen Craig to 3rd. Daniel Descalso lines out to second baseman Ray Olmedo. Ruben Gotay homers (8) on a fly ball to left field. Allen Craig scores. Joe Mather scores. Donovan Solano hit by pitch. Nashville Sounds pitcher Jeff Bennett ejected by HP umpire Jason Millsap. Pitcher Change: David Johnson replaces Jeff Bennett, batting 9th. Matt Pagnozzi grounds into double play, shortstop Luis Cruz to second baseman Ray Olmedo to first baseman Joe Koshansky. Donovan Solano out at 2nd.

I understand why Seth Lintz struggles now. Either he has no control or he's a nibbler, he was 0-2 on the first batter and went 4 straight balls to walk him... the inning didn't get better from there. He's only given up 3 runs so far, but he's reached the inning pitch count and is being pulled, unofficially Steve had him around 40 pitches. edit. Steve put the pitch count at 36
-
I don't think so, adding him to the 40 man a year to soon put him on accelerated path to Milwaukee. If he gets 120ish this season and bumps into the 150-160 range next season (command willing) I think that's the best we can do. There really isn't time to do anything else but shatter the 100 IP barrier and move on.

Rogers gives up 3 runs in the 1st... what is it about 1st inning runs this year? There are pitchers from Milwaukee down through A ball that have somewhat consistently struggled early in games. Is it just a weird trend, or is it something related to pre game preparation? I would tend to think it's the former, but I'm open to the possibility the Brewers may be trying something new to help extend pitchers farther into games... a different pre game routine so there is more left in the tank when it matters if you will. If it's just a blip on the radar, I hope it goes away soon.

Conspiracy Theory Alert.... Cain is being held back because they don't want him to come up and outhit Gomez! No I don't do sarcastic blue, but even if I did and even though I'm kidding I'm not sure that should be in blue. What logical reason is there for keeping him in AA now that we're into the second half? He plays excellent defense, hit's for high average, takes some walks, can hit for a bit of a power... I guess what I'm getting is that he's clearly not being challenged enough anymore in AA, it's time for the next step. -
I for one like that Ax-Man went 2 for the save... screw this defined inning crap that is done all over baseball. Use your best pitchers in the most important situations and get the wins. The 9th inning is no more important than any other inning. I'm not big on Macha at all, but I will give credit where credit is due.

Final: Helena 9, Missoula (Arizona) 8 Helena Boxscore Ha-Ha no way, the H-Crew scores 6 runs in the bottom of the 9th, the last on a wild pitch to win again. I call this sweet justice for the hell that is the Missoula peanut inning promotion... those of you who have listened to a game in Missoula know exactly what I'm talking about. Unfortunately Hiram Burgos continues his tough season, now down in Helena. He pitched 4 innings, giving up 9 hits, 6 earned runs, while striking out 6. Chad Robinson's first 2 innings were very good, but he struggled in his 3rd, and Alex Jones allowed both of his inherited runners to score. Speaking of Jones, Steve describes him as a right handed Mitch Stetter, he has the same side arm slinging delivery just from the other side. Rob Currie pitched a scoreless 9th to pickup the win. Offensively Cody Hawn was huge hitting 2 bombs in the game. Carlos George came up clutch again, he had 2 doubles including the big 2 bagger in the 9th. Mass Hass probably has a big smile going as Greg Hopkins was 2-4 with a walk and 2 doubles. The H-Crew was very good in the field, they didn't commit an error and George even made a real nice play at SS. Helena Recap The 9th inning rally, 6 runs on only 1 hit in the half inning. Helena Bottom 9th Richie Rowland remains in the game as the designated hitter. Pitcher Change: Justin Albert replaces Victor Acosta. Shea Vucinich walks. John Dishon reaches on fielding error by third baseman Eric Groff. Shea Vucinich to 2nd. Brent Dean hit by pitch. Shea Vucinich to 3rd. John Dishon to 2nd. With Carlos George batting, wild pitch by Justin Albert, Shea Vucinich scores. John Dishon to 3rd. Brent Dean to 2nd. Carlos George doubles (2) on a ground ball to right fielder Roberto Rodriguez. John Dishon scores. Brent Dean scores. Pitcher Change: Victor Lara replaces Justin Albert. With John Bivens batting, wild pitch by Victor Lara, Carlos George to 3rd. John Bivens walks. With Franklin Romero batting, wild pitch by Victor Lara, Carlos George scores. John Bivens to 2nd. Franklin Romero out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Victor Lara to first baseman Bobby Stone. John Bivens to 3rd. Cody Hawn hit by pitch. Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Reggie Keen replaces Cody Hawn. With Michael Walker batting, Reggie Keen steals (1) 2nd base. Michael Walker walks. Gregory Hopkins walks. John Bivens scores. Reggie Keen to 3rd. Michael Walker to 2nd. With Shea Vucinich batting, wild pitch by Victor Lara, Reggie Keen scores. Michael Walker to 3rd. Manatees thumped by Threshers, 10-1 By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA - Eight runs in the first two innings for the Threshers off of Manatees starter Dan Merklinger led to a long night for Brevard County in a 10-1 loss to Clearwater on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Clearwater's first hitter of the game reached on an error by Steve Braun and the wheels came off early for the Manatees as the Threshers plated five in the first off of four hits and a walk. The big blow was a two-out two-run double by Keoni De Renne to make it 5-0. Merklinger didn't fare much better in the second inning as he allowed three runs on four hits, while recording just one out in the inning. He went just 1 1/3 innings and allowed eight runs, only three earned, on eight hits. Daniel Meadows relieved Merklinger and went 3 2/3 innings and his only blemish was a two-out two-run homer allowed to Anthony Gose in the fifth inning. Trey Watten and Ruben Flores also combined for four innings of scoreless relief. The Manatees managed just four hits on the night and two were off the bat of Shawn Zarraga including a double. Erik Komatsu drove in Josh Prince with a two-out single in the third to plate the only run for Brevard County. Brevard County and Clearwater will close out the series and the first half of the season on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. For those who can't make it out to the game tomorrow night, Stephen C. Smith of SpaceCoastBaseball.com will be doing a live webcast from Space Coast Stadium with all the action of Wednesday night's game. Click here to listen live on Wednesday night. -

Final: Huntsville 7, Jacksonville (Florida) 6 Stars Start Second Half Splendidly By Aaron Morse Lorenzo Cain drove in four runs, Caleb Gindl drove in three, and the Huntsville Stars (1-0) survived five errors to start the second half of the season on the right foot as they beat the Jacksonville Suns (0-1) by a score of 7-6 Tuesday night. Huntsville got on the board right away as Brett Lawrie continued his hot hitting with a double to right with nobody out in the first. After a Lorenzo Cain single put runners at the corners, Caleb Gindl hit the ball deep enough to the outfield that Lawrie was able to score. But Jacksonville took advantage of some shaky control from Stars’ starter Michael Bowman in the bottom half of the frame. With one away, Osvaldo Martinez drew a walk. Bowman proceeded to hit the next batter with a pitch. However he managed to get Lee Mitchell to fly to left for the second out of the inning. Bowman’s control let him down again though; this time on a throw to first. Mark Saccomanno hit a grounder back to the mound that Bowman threw wide to first, allowing a run to score to tie the game. The Stars gave Bowman some more offense in the top of the second. With one away the red hot Dayton Buller extended his hitting streak to eight games with a double to left. After Bowman bunted him to third, Brett Lawrie drew a walk. That’s when Cain delivered the big blow, a triple to deep center field Gindl singled him home and the Stars grabbed the 4-1 advantage. Poor defense allowed the Suns to get one back in the bottom of the second. With one out Tim Torres singled to left. Suns’ starter Elih Villanueva attempted to bunt the runner over and managed to reach when Dayton Buller couldn’t handle the ball. A wild pitch combined with a throwing error by Buller allowed Torres to cross the plate to make the score 4-2. Neither team would score again until the bottom of the fourth when Vinny Rottino took Bowman deep to cut the Stars’ lead to 4-3. Cain and the Stars had the answer in the top of the fifth. With one away, Lee Haydel singled and Buller drew a walk. Bowman bunted the runners over at which point Villanueva (6-4) was removed from the game. The righty went 4.2 innings, surrendering six runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out one. New pitcher Kyle Gunderson immediately walked Brett Lawrie to load the bases. Cain came through with a two-run single and the Stars extended their lead to 6-3. Gindl continued his big day with a solo shot in the sixth off Gunderson as the Stars had a seemingly comfortable 7-3 edge. Bowman (7-5) tossed five innings, giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on three hits. He walked two and struck-out five in the winning effort. Reliever Eddie Morlan gave up a one-out double to Rottino in the sixth. Rottino stole third and scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 7-4. They made things really interesting in the seventh. Morlan surrendered a single and walk to start the inning. That prompted manager Mike Guerrero to call on Donovan Hand to get out of the inning. He got off to a good start when Lee Mitchell hit into a double play. Unfortunately, yet another Stars error allowed Saccomanno to reach second base and a run to score. Matt Dominguez drove him home and the Stars only had a 7-6 edge. Jim Henderson tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the year as the Stars survived the Suns’ repeated attempts at a rally. Despite five errors, Huntsville hung on to win their fifth in a row. The Stars attempt to take game two of the series Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is at 12:05pm and can be heard only on www.huntsvillestars.com. Huntsville Boxscore *written prior to Aaron's blog post being available* Well my boy Michael Bowman pitched better tonight, going 5 innings, giving up 3 runs, 1 earned, while walking 2 and striking out 5. Eddie Morlan had a tough inning allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, 2 walks, and 2 strike outs. Donovan Hand also gave up an unearned run in his 2 innings of work, on only 1 hit. Jim Henderson closed out the game for his 2nd save. Brett Lawrie continues to push his OPS up as Homer noted above going 2 for 3 with 2 BBs, a 2B, and a 3B. Lorenzo Cain does not belong in AA ball, Melvin might think he's "close" to a promotion, I think I'm close smacking someone upside the head. Lo was 3-5 with a triple and 4 RBI in this contest. Caleb Gindl added 2 hits including a HR, Lee Haydel notched 2 hits of his own, and Dayton Buller doubled and tripled! Not bad at all for a catcher... Buller has an .833 OPS so far in Huntsville. Ex Brewer farmhand Vinny Rottino homered and doubled against his old club. Thankfully the offense picked up the pitching and defense because the Stars committed 5 errors in the game; Bowman 1 (throwing), Buller 2 (fielding, throwing), Green 2 (both fielding). Must be those horrible MiLB fields giving our boys a beat down... Huntsville Recap Not a good sequence in the Jacksonville 2nd. Fianl: Clearwater (Pilly) 10, Brevard County 1 Brevard County Boxscore Well not much to like here. Dan Merklinger just couldn't stop the bleeding in the first and then got smacked around in the 2nd. He went 1.1 IP, allowing 8 runs, 3 earned, while walking and striking out 1. Daniel Meadows, a relief favorite of mine, unfortunately continues his recent trend giving up 2 runs over 3.2 innings while striking out 3.
