  1. Woo Mass Hass and Brewerfan.net just got a shout out from Steve Wendt on the Helena broadcast.
  2. Helena Brewers Pre Game Audio Chris interviews pitching coach Elvin Nina. They discuss Elvin's routine as a coach, the pitching staff in general, then pitching prospects Tyler Cravy, Brian Garman, and Hiram Burgos specifically.
  3. Helena Brewers Pre Game Audio If you are interested in minor league baseball I'd recommend you listen to every Helena archive you can. Steve does fantastic interviews with players, coaches, and Brewer management. You will learn more in one season listening to Steve Wendt in Helena about the Brewer system than you'll learn from the JS in a lifetime. Steve interviews manager Joe Ayrault. They discuss Joe's teaching style, building a team, working with young catchers who haven't gotten to call their own pitches, Joe's initial impression of the team, and early season game planning.
  4. Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Pre Game Audio Chris interviews newly drafted 1B prospect Hunter Morris. WNAM was having streaming issues so the audio quality isn't the best. They discuss college baseball, Del Howell, wood bats, playing for Team USA, Steven Strasburg, and the whirlwind last couple of weeks for Hunter.
  5. Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Pre Game Audio Chris interviews pitching prospect Maverick Lasker. They discuss his start the night before, his start to the season, and his new do.
  6. Final: Helena 7, Missoula (Arizona) 6 Helena Boxscore I only was able to listen to the first inning before I had to run back to work, what a nice way to start the season for the H-Crew. Tyler Cravy didn't have the greatest debut after that first, but Steve certainly piqued my interest in him. Tyler ended with a final line of 5.2IP, 6H, 5ER, 2BB, and 1K. It sounds like he's pretty raw but throws hard, Helena could really use a stadium gun... get to work on that Steve! Ryan Burnal gave up 1 unearned run in his 1.1 IP. Brian Garman pitched the final 2 innings to get the win. Franklin Romero, Gregory Hopkins (apparently a slick fielder from what Steve said), and Shea Vucinich all had multiple hits. Romero and Vucinich also doubled, Michael Walker added a triple. Helena Recap Missed opportunity in the 1st. Helena Bottom 1st John Bivens flies out to center fielder Chris Jarrett. Franklin Romero walks. Cody Hawn hit by pitch. Franklin Romero to 2nd. Michael Walker walks. Franklin Romero to 3rd. Cody Hawn to 2nd. Gregory Hopkins grounds into double play, shortstop Raul Navarro to first baseman Bobby Stone. Michael Walker out at 2nd. Cravy had a real tough 2nd inning Missoula Top 2nd Eric Groff doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder John Bivens. Bobby Stone doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder John Dishon. Eric Groff scores. Adonys Canelo doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder John Bivens. Bobby Stone scores. Roberto Rodriguez homers (1) on a fly ball to right center field. Adonys Canelo scores. Jae Yun Kim grounds out, shortstop Carlos George to first baseman Cody Hawn. Fidel Pena flies out to right fielder Franklin Romero. Chris Jarrett lines out to center fielder John Bivens. The winning rally is always a must. Helena Bottom 9th Pitcher Change: Randy Hamrick replaces William Harvil. Franklin Romero singles on a ground ball to center fielder Chris Jarrett. Cody Hawn singles on a ground ball to right fielder Roberto Rodriguez. Franklin Romero to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Reggie Keen replaces Cody Hawn. Michael Walker triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Chris Jarrett. Franklin Romero scores. Reggie Keen scores.
  7. Final: Clearwater 4 (Pihlly), Brevard County 0 Brevard County two-hit by Clearwater By Frank Longobardo / Brevard County Manatees VIERA - The Brevard County Manatees returned home for their first home game in 13 days and were held to just two hits by the Clearwater Threshers in a 4-0 loss on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees (26-41) had been on a recent power surge, but managed just a bunt single by Josh Prince to lead off the sixth and a double to right center by Matt Cline to lead off the ninth. Brevard County starter Michael Fiers (3-8, 3.70) went 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on eleven hits, while walking one and striking out four. Clearwater (36-32) got to Fiers early as they scored twice in the first inning off of four hits. The duo of Mike Ramlow and Andre Lamontagne combined to shut out the Threshers in 4 2/3 innings of relief. Ramlow fanned five in his 2 2/3 innings of work. Brevard County and Clearwater will continue the three-game series on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium beginning at 7:05 p.m. Every Tuesday is KRAFT Singles Tuesday Night Tickets. Fans who bring a KRAFT Singles package wrapper to the box office get a special buy one ticket, get one free deal. Brevard County BoxscoreAsk and ye shall receive... a day after asking for the summaries, Frank comes through only to have absolutely nothing to talk about. Michael Fiers record is a joke given how he's pitched this season. He didn't have his best game tonight, but 3-8 is not representative of his efforts at all. Brevard County Recap In a hurry tonight so I just skimmed it, it's about what you would expect with 2 hits.
  8. Final: Nashville 8, Oklahoma City (Texas) 6 Sounds Take Three Of Four From RedHawks Cruz, Oeltjen Crush Home Runs In Victory NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Luis Cruz jacked his fifth homer and added three RBIs to propel the Nashville Sounds over the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 8-6, on Monday evening at historic Greer Stadium in the finale of a four-game series. Taking three of four from first place Oklahoma City, Nashville (38-32) scored seven of its eight runs with two outs. Six of Nashville's 10 hits went for extra-bases while seven different players in the Sounds lineup scored at least one run. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related_content_header.gif · AUDIO: Luis Cruz Two-Run Home Run http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related-content-capper.gifSounds starting pitcher Chuck Lofgren (7-4) earned his team-leading seventh win after surrendering four runs while scattering seven hits with two strikeouts over five innings. Brandon Kintzler picked up his second save of the year, recording the final out after Mitch Stetter fanned the first two batters in the ninth inning. The RedHawks quickly took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Esteban German led off the contest with a base hit up the middle followed by a Mitch Moreland walk. Later in the frame with German on third, Ryan Garko hit a sacrifice fly for the game's first run. The Sounds went ahead 3-1 in the next frame, scoring all three runs with two outs in the inning. With Ray Olmedo and Brendan Katin on base, Joe Koshansky doubled to right field to score both runners and momentarily tie himself for the club lead with Cruz at 36 RBIs. Cruz then regained the RBI lead when he singled home Koshansky from second base for a 3-1 Sounds advantage. Oklahoma City regained the lead in the third inning with two consecutive doubles and a two-run home run over the left field wall by first baseman Chris Davis, his eighth long ball of the year. With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, centerfielder Trent Oeltjen crushed Doug Mathis' 2-2 pitch over the right field wall to knot the contest at 4-4. It was Oeltjen's sixth long ball of the season and the first home run hit in the last four games for Nashville. After a Mat Gamel walk, Cruz added to his RBI total in the next inning by belting a two-run homer over the wall in left center, giving Nashville the 6-4 lead. The Sounds tacked on another run in the next inning, led by Martin Maldonado's first double of the season. Maldonado then came home on a two-out double from second baseman Ray Olmedo for a 7-4 Nashville lead. The RedHawks got one run back in the top of the seventh inning and reduced the lead to two runs as Esteban German walked, stole second base, and then scored on a two-out RBI single by Mitch Moreland. Oklahoma City scored another run in the next inning and trimmed the lead to 7-6 after Gregorio Petit doubled home Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Nashville added an insurance run in the bottom of the eight frame that made it 8-6. With the bases juiced, Katin hit a soft grounder to shortstop that brought home Oeltjen from third base. Mathis (2-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings pitched. The Sounds travel three hours west tomorrow to Memphis to face the cross-state rival Redbirds in a five-game, four day series at AutoZone Park, beginning at 7:05 pm CT on Tuesday evening. Following his spectacular one-hit performance earlier in the week against the Redbirds, left-hander Chase Wright (5-3, 3.73) takes the mound again for Nashville against Memphis left-hander Evan MacLane (4-6, 4.48). Nashville BoxscoreChuck Lofgren continues to win games while giving his fair share of runs, color me unimpressed so far. Don't get me wrong, I like him as pitcher, even more so after that story BK linked to with Garth Brooks, it's just he simply needs to pitch better. Nashville used a very Larussaesque 5 pitchers tonight, with the final 4 pitchers all being pulled or inserted into the game mid inning, Mitch Stetter and Brandon Kintzler were the only 2 pitchers not to give up a run. HRs detailed above, Olmedo, Katin, and Cruz had multi hit games. Olmedo, Katin, Koshanshky, and Maldonado all doubled. Mat Gamel was 0-3 with 2 BBs and 2Ks. Nashville Recap
  9. Hmm, Steve is making Tyler Cravy sound like another Amaury Rivas under the radar type pitcher, I was curious about him being the opening day starter, and now I'm up to intrigued on the prospect meter. The opposing pitcher in the Helena game is Patrick Schuster, anyone who follows the draft will remember him as the FL high school pitcher who through all of the consecutive no hitters prior to the draft last season. edit. I spelled Tyler's name wrong.
  10. I'm sure Mass will get his share of the updates, I'll get mine in the late PM early AM hours.
  11. Why does trading 2 players=punting 2011? I've been having trouble with this concept going all the way back to 2008 when people were claiming trading Hardy or Fielder would have been punting on 2009... which by the way we punted unintentionally, just like we're punting 2010 unintentionally by trying to fill out the roster with aging FAs. For me it's simple... For example... you trade a 4 war player and replace him with a 2 WAR player from inside the system and get a 3 WAR player from the trade, just like that we're a better team than we were prior to the trade. You replace a 4 WAR and a 0 (or negative) WAR player with 2 younger players, but become a better team in the process. Sure you lose a little production that first year in the 4 WAR spot (assuming young players get better, and maybe the replacement player is never that valuable), but we also significantly upgrade another. It might be even be a wash that first year, but in the 2nd or 3rd year the team is much better off. Lets say Fielder is a 5 WAR player this season, we replace him with Gamel whom I think is an easy 3 WAR player and a young pitcher who ends up being worth 2-3 WAR. We've lost some production at 1B, but we've replaced a replacement level pitcher from the rotation and the team is stronger as a whole. I'm not saying Fielder is the guy, I'm just talking concepts... I don't see why trading 1 or 2 players means we're jumping off the cliff into complete rebuilding mode. I think it's more of a convienent catch phrase excuse for those who rather would ride out or resign a player like Prince than trade him.
  12. I sure am glad we traded for Gomez so we could platoon Edmonds and push Cain into corner OF spot where he doesn't belong. I'm inclined to ride Hart into FA unless Melvin flips him for pitching which seems highly unlikely given his track record.
  13. WooHoo! Almost back to the full link report, Helena has always been a favorite audio choice of mine.
  14. Lets not get carried away with what CC actually produced, rather what was a reasonable expectation of his production, so often when discussing a trade the context of that time frame is lost. We traded a top 20 prospect, a solid OF prospect, and a solid pitching pitching prospect for what was likely 3 or 4 extra wins that season. Sabathia actually replaced Gallardo in the rotation, not a 5th starter, we can argue semantics about Yo's replacement all day.. but in effect Sabathia was acquired to replace the void left by Yo when he blew out his knee.
  15. The usual one line response with nothing behind it. We traded for 4 months of Sabathia, Fielder would be where even longer, Bryson is going to be good, I still believe LaPorta will be a good hitter, and I really liked Brantley at the time. At the very least we gave up 12 years of service time for 4 months. I thought it was stupid, I still think it's stupid, but teams make deals that I think don't make sense every year. Literally for 100th time this is about needs matching up, that's it. A year and a half of Fielder is worth more than 1 year of Fielder, and certainly equal to whatever Sabathia is worth, depending on what metric you want to use. If we're talking the Rays, they have an incredibly young rotation the way it is with Hellickson in AAA. How would they be trading their future? Davis/Niemman aren't the best pitcher on that team and anything can happen between A ball and MLB. I'm happy taking prospect pitching back, I'm certainly not obsessing about a pitcher with MLB experience like some are. It doesn't matter because Melvin won't make a move regardless, if he does it will be at the deadline next season if we're out of the race. Why would Melvin aggressively pursue impact pitching now? What's changed?
  16. There is simply no way we are getting Strasburg, none at all, there's is simply no way Washington will trade him. Any deal would have to start with Gallardo, and there's no way we're trading him either.
  17. That's like saying who would give up a big piece of their future for 4 months of Sabathia?
  18. I'm not sure "rake" would be the description I would use, he's certainly hitting for power though.
  19. Final: Oklahoma (Texas) 5, Nashville 4 Sounds Win Streak Snapped By RedHawks NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds had their four-game win streak come to a close with a 5-4 loss to the Oklahoma City RedHawks on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at historic Greer Stadium. The Sounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Luis Cruz drew an inning-opening walk from Oklahoma City starter Michael Kirkman and scored later in the frame on Ray Olmedo's sacrifice fly to center. Oklahoma City took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth against left-hander Chris Waters. With one out, the visitors loaded the bases when Chris Davis was hit by a pitch, Ryan Garko walked, and Mitch Moreland singled to shallow right. Chad Tracy then lifted a bloop into center field that should have gone for a hit but Trent Oeltjen deked Moreland on the play, resulting in an RBI forceout at second. Former Sound Hernan Iribarren followed with a go-ahead, two-out single to left. Nashville evened the contest in the home half of the fourth. Brendan Katin was hit by a Kirkman pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Joe Koshansky's RBI single to right-center to knot the score at 2-2. RedHawks shortstop Gregorio Petit put the visitors back on top in the fifth with a leadoff homer to left-center off Waters, his third longball of the year. Oklahoma City added a run later in the frame when Davis doubled to extend his longest hit streak of the year to eight games then scored when Ryan Garko followed with a two-bagger of his own, upping the lead to 4-2. Oklahoma City extended its advantage in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by former Sounds All-Star Nelson Cruz off reliever A.J. Murray. The Sounds pulled back within a run in the bottom of the sixth. Team RBI leader Luis Cruz upped his total to 36 on the year in the bottom of the sixth when he plated Koshansky with a two-out double off the left field wall (audio). Adam Stern (3-for-3) followed with an infield single to first base, and Chad Tracy misfired towards Kirkman covering the bag, allowing Cruz to score to reduce the deficit to 5-4. Petit halted the rally with an outstanding play on Ray Olmedo's ground ball up the middle that he back-handed behind the second base bag and flipped to Iribarren to end the inning. Kirkman (7-1) picked up the win with a quality start for the visitors. The southpaw allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings of work. He walked five batters and struck out six. A pair of Oklahoma City relievers combined to post three scoreless frames to close out the contest. Pedro Strop registered his seventh save of the year by recording the final four outs. Waters (4-4) drew the loss for Nashville and is now winless in his last six trips to the hill. The left-hander allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings of work. The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05 p.m. finale on Monday evening at Greer. Left-hander Chuck Löfgren (6-4, 5.15) will man the bump for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Doug Mathis (2-2, 4.24). Nashville BoxscoreChris Waters just didn't have it today, he gave up 8H, 4ER, 1BB, and 1HR against only 2Ks. A.J. Murray gave up his first run since May 30th, but the homer in me would still rather have Mike Jones. Jeff Bennett finished the afternoon on the bump for the Sounds, he was excellent in his 2IP, allowing 1H against 4 Ks. Adam Stern was the only Sound with a multi hit game, Adam with 3-3 with a BB. In addition to being sneaky Trent Oeltjen also doubled, Luis Cruz added a double of his own, and Mat Gamel was 0-5. Nashville Recap Gamel flew out with the bases loaded in the 3rd. Nashville Bottom 3rd Luis Cruz walks. Adam Stern singles on a line drive to left fielder Mitch Moreland. Luis Cruz to 2nd. Patrick Arlis out on a sacrifice bunt, third baseman Chris Davis to second baseman Hernan Iribarren. Luis Cruz to 3rd. Adam Stern to 2nd. Ray Olmedo out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Esteban German. Luis Cruz scores. Trent Oeltjen walks. Mat Gamel flies out to center fielder Esteban German. Nashville missed another opportunity in the 5th playing small ball. Nashville Bottom 5th Adam Stern singles on a line drive to right fielder Nelson Cruz. With Patrick Arlis batting, Adam Stern steals (1) 2nd base. Patrick Arlis walks. Coaching visit to mound. Ray Olmedo out on a sacrifice bunt, catcher Kevin Richardson to second baseman Hernan Iribarren. Adam Stern to 3rd. Patrick Arlis to 2nd. Trent Oeltjen strikes out swinging. Mat Gamel lines out to center fielder Esteban German. Somehow Gamel ended another rally in the 7th, this just wasn't his day either. Nashville Bottom 7th Pitcher Change: Zachary Phillips replaces Michael Kirkman. Trent Oeltjen doubles (19) on a fly ball to left fielder Mitch Moreland. Mat Gamel lines into double play, second baseman Hernan Iribarren to shortstop Gregorio Petit. Trent Oeltjen doubled off 2nd. Brendan Katin strikes out swinging.
  20. Final: Huntsville 4, Montgomery (Tampa Bay) 3 Huntsville Boxscore Don't look now but Huntsville has won 4 in a row! Chris Cody had one of his better outings on the season, 5IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, 2K. Mark Willinsky gave up a HR in his inning of work. Lucas Luetge wasn't as sharp today but continued his strong season going 1.2 IP today allowing no runs. Jim Henderson finished the final 1.1 for his first save. Brett Lawrie stayed hot, going 1-3 with 2B pushing his OPS up to .842, keep it going Brett. Zelous Wheeler had a big day going 3-4 with a 2B and Lee Haydel also had 2 hits. Cain(17) and Lawrie(15) had SBs, I only mention it because both players have nice totals nearing the half way point, though last I checked Lawrie's CS% wasn't very good. Wheeler committed his 20th error of the season playing way out of position, hopefully Zelous won't have to play out of position again next year. Huntsville Recap A double play hurt the Stars in the 1st, Wheeler's single must have been a rocket. Huntsville Bottom 1st Brett Lawrie grounds out, third baseman Chris Nowak to first baseman Leslie Anderson. Lorenzo Cain singles on a line drive to center fielder Rashad Eldridge. With Zelous Wheeler batting, Lorenzo Cain steals (17) 2nd base. Zelous Wheeler singles on a line drive to left fielder Emeel Salem. Lorenzo Cain to 3rd. Steffan Wilson grounds into double play, third baseman Chris Nowak to second baseman Cody Cipriano to first baseman Leslie Anderson. Zelous Wheeler out at 2nd. The Huntsville 7th could have been better if not for 2 outs on the bases. Huntsville Bottom 7th Zelous Wheeler doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Emeel Salem. Steffan Wilson strikes out swinging, catcher Nevin Ashley to first baseman Leslie Anderson. Caleb Gindl singles on a line drive to right fielder John Matulia. Zelous Wheeler scores. Caleb Gindl out at 2nd on the throw, right fielder John Matulia to catcher Nevin Ashley to shortstop Chris De La Cruz. Chuck Caufield walks. Coaching visit to mound. Chuck Caufield out at 2nd, catcher Nevin Ashley to shortstop Chris De La Cruz
  21. Final: Wisconsin 3, Kane County (Oakland) 1 Rattlers end first half with a win By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - Cameron Garfield's two-run double and five pitchers were enough for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Kane County. The Rattlers beat Kane County 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium in the first half finale for both teams. Maverick Lasker was the winning pitcher as he tossed four innings of shutout relief. Kane County (32-27) grabbed the lead with a run in the second inning. Myrio Richard singled to left and drove in Max Stassi for a 1-0 lead. Stassi walked to start the inning, went to second on a balk, and took third on a wild pitch to set up the run off Wisconsin starting pitcher Nick Bucci. Wisconsin (26-42) had Kentrail Davis at second and Khris Davis at first with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Garfield lined a 1-2 pitch to the gap in right-center. Kentrail Davis scored easily. Khris Davis just beat the tag of Stassi, the Kane County catcher, to give the Rattlers a 2-1 lead. Cutter Dykstra gave the Rattlers an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Hunter Morris doubled to start the inning. One out later, Dykstra singled to send Morris in with the run that made the score 3-1. Lasker took over for Bucci to start the fourth. He would allow three hits and strike out three to keep the Rattlers in front. Then, Jeremy Jeffress came on to pitch the eighth. He worked around a hit batsman and a walk to keep the Rattlers up 3-1. In the ninth, Andy Sauter got the first two outs of the inning, but allowed back-to-back singles to bring the winning run to the plate. Caleb Thielbar, the fifth Rattler pitcher of the game, got the final out on a grounder to second base for his second save of the season. Wisconsin played Kane County eight times in the first half and went 6-2 against the Cougars. The Timber Rattlers are off for the Midwest League All-Star Break until Friday, June 25. Wisconsin opens the second half of the 2010 schedule at Time Warner Cable Field against the Burlington Bees at 7:05pm. WP: Maverick Lasker (5-3) LP: Justin Marks (2-8) SAVE: Caleb Thielbar 92) TIME: 2:39 ATTN: 6,563 Wisconsin Boxscore Nick Bucci's peripheral numbers just don't give me a warm and fuzzy. Nick had 3 BBs and 0Ks today, giving him 38 BBs against 45 Ks in 61.2 IP on the season. Maverick Lasker pitched 4 strong innings following Bucci's 3. He allowed 3 hits, no walks, while striking out 3, I'd love to get some velocity reports on him now because his scouting report coming out of high school was almost exactly the same as Odorizzi's (Lintz's report also read the same way). I don't see Jeremy Jeffress getting many more appearances with the T-Rats, in fact I hope this was his last. Andy Sauter and Caleb Theilbar's work was detailed above. Kentrail Davis was the only T-Rat with multiple hits, Hunter Morris and Cameron Garfield doubled. Kentrail Davis was also charged with a fielding error. Wisconsin Recap Unfortunately this has not been uncommon for the young T-Rats this season... way too many extra bases being given up all the way around. Kane County Bottom 2nd Max Stassi walks. With Rashun Dixon batting, Max Stassi advances to 2nd on a balk. With Rashun Dixon batting, wild pitch by Nicholas Bucci, Max Stassi to 3rd. Rashun Dixon grounds out, shortstop Michael Marseco to first baseman Hunter Morris. Myrio Richard singles on a ground ball to left fielder Khristopher Davis. Max Stassi scores. With Kent Walton batting, Myrio Richard steals (4) 2nd base. Kent Walton walks. Leonardo Gil grounds into double play, third baseman Cutter Dykstra to first baseman Hunter Morris. Myrio Richard out at 3rd.
  22. Final: Nashville 4, Oklahoma (Texas) 3 Sounds Win Fourth Game In A Row NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds topped the Oklahoma City RedHawks, 4-3, on Saturday night at historic Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series. It was Nashville's (37-31) fourth victory in a row, matching a season-best at home. Brendan Katin went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the victory, while Erick Almonte also added two hits. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related_content_header.gif · AUDIO: Brendan Katin Two-Run Double http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/images/news/articles/related-content-capper.gif The RedHawks got on the board first in the top of the second inning, as first baseman Ryan Garko singled to reach base to leadoff the frame. Mitch Moreland followed with a double, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia hitting a sacrifice fly to left field to score Garko for the first run. The Sounds tied the ballgame at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame as Luis Cruz added to his team-leading RBI total. After Joe Koshansky led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on an Erick Almonte base hit, Cruz smacked a grounder to centerfield to bring Koshansky home and knot the contest. Nashville plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off reliever Omar Beltre to take a 4-1 lead. After Mat Gamel singled home Norris Hopper for the club's first run of the frame, Katin crushed a line drive two-run double over the left-fielder for the other two scores. All three runs came with two outs in the inning. Garko brought the RedHawks back within one run at 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning, crushing a two-run home run off the light pole in left-center, his seventh home run of the season. In his first rehab start, left-handed starter Doug Davis threw 59 pitches over three innings for the Sounds, allowing one run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts. Sam Narron (1-2) followed in relief to earn the win for the Sounds, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings pitched. David Johnson followed with 1 1/3 frames of scoreless ball, including fanning Nelson Cruz to end the jam in the top of the sixth inning. Brandon Kintzler struck out two over one shutout one frame to earn his first Triple-A save. Making his first start since coming off the disabled list, Brandon McCarthy threw 46 pitches over two innings while giving up one run on three hits. Beltre (0-5) took the loss after surrendering three unearned runs in three innings pitched. The Sounds and RedHawks continue at 2:05 pm CT on Sunday afternoon with the third game of a four-game series at historic Greer Stadium. Left-hander Chris Waters (4-3, 3.24) takes the mound for Nashville against Oklahoma City southpaw Michael Kirkman (6-1, 3.11). Nashville Boxscore Doug Davis makes his first rehab start... as this is the minor league forum I"ll keep my opinions on his impending return to the rotation to myself. The pitching happenings were detailed very well in the game summary so there's no need to revisit them down here. Brendan Katin and Erick Almonte each had 2 hits, Brendan also doubled. I would have sworn Katin had a better BA than he does, but I'll definitely take his OBP and SLG. Mat Gamel was 1-3 with 2BB and a strike out. Nashville Recap The decisive 4th inning. Okla. City Top 4th Chris Davis doubles (10) on a line drive to left fielder Trent Oeltjen. Pitcher Change: Sam Narron replaces Doug Davis. Coaching visit to mound. Ryan Garko walks. Mitch Moreland walks. Chris Davis to 3rd. Ryan Garko to 2nd. Jarrod Saltalamacchia called out on strikes. Andy Jenkins grounds into a force out, third baseman Mat Gamel to catcher Martin Maldonado. Chris Davis out at home. Ryan Garko to 3rd. Mitch Moreland to 2nd. Andy Jenkins to 1st. With Hernan Iribarren batting, Ryan Garko picked off and caught stealing home, pitcher Sam Narron to first baseman Joe Koshansky to catcher Martin Maldonado. Nashville Bottom 4th Norris Hopper singles on a line drive to left fielder Andy Jenkins. Martin Maldonado out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Ryan Garko to second baseman Hernan Iribarren. Norris Hopper to 2nd. Ray Olmedo reaches on fielding error by third baseman Chris Davis. Trent Oeltjen strikes out swinging. Mat Gamel singles on a line drive to left fielder Andy Jenkins. Norris Hopper scores. Ray Olmedo to 2nd. Brendan Katin doubles (5) on a line drive to left fielder Andy Jenkins. Ray Olmedo scores. Mat Gamel scores. Joe Koshansky strikes out swinging.
  23. Final: Huntsville 15, Montgomery (Tampa Bay) 8 Huntsville Boxscore Josh Butler has one of his better outings of the season but it looks much more like a 2008 line than his 2009 lines... 5.2IP, 3H, 0ER, 5BB, 3Ks. He was greatly aided by 2 double plays in his 5 plus innings. Anyone who reads my usual drivel knows what's coming next, I'm into everything but the 5 BBs. After Butler left, Robert Hinton (3 ER) and Nick Green (4 R, 0 ER) had trouble locking down Montgomery, but a win is a win is a win. As discussed further up in this thread, Brett Lawrie had his best day as professional at the plate even though he was the DH. Brett was 5-6 with a 2B and a HR. Wheeler, Wilson, Green, Caufield, Buller, and Haydel all had multi hit games. Wheeler, Wilson, and Caufield all doubled, and Chuck managed his first 3B of the season as well. 24. Final, Called after 7 Innings: Brevard County 13, Lakeland (Detroit) 5 Brevard County Boxscore It's too bad that we aren't getting recaps out of BC anymore, hopefully those pick back up at some point, this would have been an excellent game to get some perspective on. R.J. Seidel was the starter here tonight and pitched his worst line of the season so far. He went 3IP giving up 5H, 2ER, and 2BBs while getting 2Ks. Brandon Ritchie continues his surprising struggles but gets the win. Brandon went 2.2IP, giving up 3H, 2ER, 2BB, and 2SOs. Trey Watten pitched the final inning and a third to close it out. What an explosive offensive game this was, all 13 BC runs were earned... everyone in the lineup but my boy Juan Sanchez had multiple hits on the evening. Cline, Miranda, Salome, Kjeldgaard, and De La Rosa (2) all doubled. Brock Kjeldgaard also homered again, as did Eric Komatsu, and Scott Krieger aded 2 bombs of his own. However, BC did leave something to be desired in the field, De La Rosa and Miranda had errors on dropped throws, and Sanchez had a throwing error. Brevard County Recap Lots to like in this recap but here's the 7 run 5th. Brevard County Top 5th Erik Komatsu walks. Angel Salome hit by pitch. Erik Komatsu to 2nd. 25. Final: Wisconsin 8, Kane County (Oakland) 0 Wisconsin pitches shutout at Kane County By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - Kyle Heckathorn was at it again. The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers starting pitcher tossed six shutout innings, allowed one hit, and struck out seven to lead the Rattlers to an 8-0 win over the Kane County Cougars Saturday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Heckathorn pitched his seventh straight quality start and picked up his fifth win of the season with his performance against the Cougars (32-36). The Rattlers (25-42) strung together four consecutive one-out singles in the top of the first inning. Khris Davis and Hunter Morris had the last two singles in the sequence and drove in a run each for a 2-0 advantage. Wisconsin stole a run with runners on first and third in the top of the second. Cutter Dykstra was at third and Michael Marseco was at first with one out after a hit-and-run single by Marseco. D'Vontrey Richardson was at the plate when Marseco broke for second and drew a throw. Dysktra broke for the plate and scored without a play as Marseco was tagged out. Heckathorn took over the game at that point. He retired 16 straight at one point. The big right-hander allowed one hit and walked three over six shutout innings. He also set a new professional high for strikeouts with seven. Heckathorn left after six innings with a 3-0 lead. In seven consecutive starts dating back to May 16, Heckathorn has pitched at least six innings without allowing more than three earned runs. In those last seven starts, Heckathorn has pitched 46 innings, allowed six earned runs, and struck out 33 batters. Rattler reliever Brian Costello allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh, but nothing else. Jon Pokorny pitched around a pair of hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to maintain the 3-0 advantage. Wisconsin's offense gave the bullpen some breathing room in the top of the ninth inning. Cameron Garfield doubled to start the inning and he was moved along on a grounder to the right side by Dykstra. Pete Fatse dropped a perfect suicide squeeze bunt with Garfield charging from third. Fatse reached base on the play that was ruled an error. Later in the inning, Wisconsin loaded the bases. Scooter Gennett cleared the bases with a three-run double to left. Kentrail Davis followed with an RBI double and the Rattlers were up 8-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Pokorny struck out the side to end the game. The Rattlers and the Cougars wrap up the first half of the Midwest League schedule on Sunday afternoon. Nick Bucci (3-3, 3.07) is scheduled to start for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has Justin Marks (2-7, 5.67) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 1:00pm. You can tune into the broadcast on AM 1280 WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:40pm. WP: Kyle Heckathorn (5-4) LP: Dan Straily (5-4) SAVE: Jon Pokorny (3) TIME: 2:46 ATTN: 10,629 Wisconsin Boxscore Look at that attendance! I was pretty proud of the WI attendance until I saw that, it's impressive for a low A baseball team. Onto the game.. Kyle Heckathorn was completely studly. After allowing a BB, a stolen Base, and then a single in the first, Heckathorn retried the next 16 batters before inexplicably losing his control in the 6th and walking back to back batters. the first on 4 pitches. He did get out of it, nearly throwing the ball away but Hunter Morris picked him up. As noted above Matt Costello and Jon Pokorny were excellent out of the pen to close out the game. D'Vontrey Richardson, Scooter Gennett, and Kentrail Davis all had 2 hits a piece including a double, Michael Marseco added 2 hits, and Cameron Garfield smacked the double mentioned above. Just an excellent offensive performance at the bookends of the game which was admittedly aided by some pretty horrible Kane County defense. It's only been 2 games but Hunter Morris is growing on me already, I remember him saving 3 errors off the top my of head with digs or tags of the runner on poor throws at 1B. Hopefully he hits like he's playing defense. Wisconsin Recap I thoroughly enjoyed the end of the game.. Kane County Bottom 8th Pitcher Change: Jonathan Pokorny replaces Matt Costello. Michael Gilmartin singles on a ground ball to shortstop Michael Marseco. Conner Crumbliss singles on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Michael Gilmartin to 2nd.
