Thoughts on Jon Singleton's contract
TheCrew07 replied to ewitkows's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I don't have a problem with it... overpay on the league minimum years and get a serious discount through arbitration and the FA years bought out. If he performs at just a league average level for the life of the contract it will be a huge cost savings for the team and Singleton gets his financial security right away. This is exactly the way these contracts should work. If the player doesn't want the security and elects to go for a bigger future payday like Segura has done that's entirely up to them, but the team shouldn't have to pay more to provide financial security for a player up front in his career. -
What could we get for Brad Mills?

I'd be happy with International Bonus Pool space. -
I'm not opposed to a college player, well obviously with all my yapping about Freeland and Newcomb, but I am opposed to a college OF bat and I'm wary of Pentecost. I hope all of this "I hear the Brewers want a college player" is just a smoke screen because I hate the idea of picking "a fast moving college player" when there will be better talent on the board. The Brewers haven't managed to draft a fast moving college player since Braun... not that it can't happen, but a player like Beede will be a project. If we're drafting a project why not go with a HS kid who might be in AA by the time he's 21 instead of trying to fix someone who's already that age on draft day? Please don't screw up this draft looking for quick moving high floor talent Seid!

Sounds Strike Early In 4-1 Win Over Iowa Jungmann Works Second Straight Quality Start For First-Place Nashville Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/0/6/77280106/cuts/DSC_0039_Large_e9wxx2h2_37n7c13g.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds proved once again why scoring first usually means a victory in a 4-1 win over the Iowa Cubs at Greer Stadium Monday night. Nashville is now 24-9 when getting on the board before the opposition, including a 16-1 record when doing so at home. The Sounds scored the all-important first runs in the bottom of the second with a two-out rally, which was started by a Matt Pagnozzi single. Third baseman Taylor Green and pitcher Taylor Jungmann then followed with RBI singles to give Nashville a 2-0 advantage. Iowa got a run back in the top of the fourth when Logan Watkins reached on an error by Hunter Morris. He would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Jungmann, the No. 6 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers system according to Baseball America, turned in his second straight quality start, allowing no earned runs in 6.1 innings and striking out eight I-Cubs. He finished the homestand with a 2-0 record and a 0.74 ERA. The Sounds got some breathing room in the bottom of the sixth when Caleb Gindl hit a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for a home run. The dinger snapped Iowa Starter Dallas Beeler's streak of retiring 10 straight Nashville hitters. Beeler finished the game with a quality start of his own, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Nashville got its final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Jeff Bianchi scored because of two I-Cubs errors. The Sounds bullpen closed the game out with another stellar performance from a number of pitchers. Jeremy Jefferess threw a clean inning, while Brewers reliever Tom Gorzelanny retired both batters he faced in another rehab outing. Donovan Hand picked up his 12th save of year after pitching a scoreless ninth. Hand has now strung together eight consecutive scoreless outings and has converted his last four save opportunities. The Sounds will conclude the current homestand with a Tuesday matinee at 12:05 p.m. LHP Brad Mills (4-0, 1.74 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Sounds, and he is slated to face Iowa LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (4-2, 2.35). Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5-FM "The GAME". Nashville Boxscore I'm not sure what to make out of strike out totals against the I-Cubs as they have the second most in the league as a team and added 10 more tonight, this has proven to be free swinging club even without Baez in the line-up. In fact they have 5 players over 40 strike outs already coming into today's game on just this one team. For perspective sake the only Brewer affiliate who's close to having that many players in the line-up is the T-Rats with Ratterree (76), Brennan (55), McFarland (41), and Pena (41). The Brewer organization currently has 11 total players with more than 40 strike outs and 3 are on the MLB roster in Reynolds (62), Gomez (59), and Davis (50). For curiosity sake Nick Ramirez (63), Morris (48), Roache (45), and Halton (42) round out that list. My big knock against Taylor Jungmann has always been his been the fact that he didn't miss bats, even in college. With a power sinker and an out pitch he could be fairly intriguing in the way that Nelson is. I'm not saying he's magically found an out pitch but his current K rate is far beyond anything he's done in the past and the walks are way down as well. It's encouraging to say the least and he went 1-2 at the plate as well! The Sounds made the most of their 6 hits scoring 4 runs and no batter had multi-hit night. Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday

Rattlers stop River Bandits win streak at six Castillo's walkoff sacrifice fly gives Rattlers 4-3 win By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - Francisco Castillo delivered two big RBI for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday in the conclusion of Sunday's game against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Wisconsin second baseman tied that game with a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Rattlers fell 7-4. Castillo got another chance in a big spot in Monday's second game and he came through with a walkoff sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 Wisconsin win. Ronnie Mitchell homered to lead off the top of the second inning and the River Bandits (30-27) were up 1-0. Omar Garcia doubled to start Wisconsin's third inning and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Angel Ortega. Garcia scored the tying run on a passed ball later in the inning. But, the game did not stay tied for long. Tyler White hit a long home run to left to lead off the top of the fourth and Quad Cities had a 2-1 lead. Rattlers starting pitcher Preston Gainey hit Mitchell with the next pitch and was ejected by the plate umpire. Lefty Trevor Seidenberger took over for Gainey. The Rattlers (26-31) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning against reliever Chris Lee. Angel Ortega, Johnny Davis, and Aramis Ramirez came up with three straight singles to load the bases with one out. Michael Ratterree drew a walk to force in the run to tie the game 2-2. The River Bandits could only get a force play at second on Clint Coulter's chopper to third and that let Davis score the run that made it 3-2. But, the Rattlers did not lead for long. Seidenberger retired the first two batters in the top of the sixth. Then, White hit a home run to left. That was the fourth home run of the season for White, who hit three homers off the Timber Rattlers in the last two games of the series. This homer tied the game 3-3. That homer also ended a streak for Seidenberger, who had not allowed an earned run in 21-1/3 consecutive innings. Ramirez, who was on a rehabilitation assignment with Wisconsin for the Milwaukee Brewers, stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with Rafael Neda at second and Davis at first with two outs and a chance to put the Rattlers in front. Ramirez sent a line drive right at first baseman Jon Kemmer for the final out. Ramirez went 2-for-4 on Monday with a pair of singles. He was 2-for-6 in his rehab assignment with the Timber Rattlers. In the top of the seventh, Kemmer doubled to the gap in left-center. However, he tried to stretch that hit into a triple and he was out on a strong relay throw from Ortega. Coulter drew a one out walk in the bottom of the seventh and Taylor Brennan singled to right to put runners at the corners. Castillo had two strikes against him, but he fouled off a pair of pitches before he sent a fly ball to medium right-center field. Coulter tagged and scored as the throw to the plate was high to let the Rattlers celebrate their fifth walkoff win of the season. The Timber Rattlers are off on Tuesday. They return to action on Wednesday night to host the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Tyler Alexander (4-3, 3.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Aaron Slegers (5-2, 4.95) is set to start for the Kernels. Game time is 7:05pm. The school year is over and it's time for the teachers, support staff, and others in education to get out and celebrate with a night at a Timber Rattlers game. There will be prizes and special ticket offers for all those involved in education. Everyone may enjoy Cher-Make hotdogs, Pepsi products, and Miller beer for $1 as the Rattlers take on the Kernels. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are many ways to catch the action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will televise the game starting with their pregame show at 6:30pm. The radio broadcast is available on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 6:45pm. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can watch the game, too. HOME RUNS: QC: Ronnie Mitchell (8th, 0 on in 2nd inning off Preston Gainey, 0 out) Tyler White (3rd, 0 on in 4th inning off Preston Gainey, 0 out) Tyler White (4th, 0 on in 6th inning off Trevor Seidenberger, 0 out) WP: Trevor Seidenberger (5-1) LP: Chris Lee (2-3) TIME: 2:07 ATTN: 4,071 Wisconsin Boxscore Mehring was very upset about Preston Gainey's ejection as was manager Matt Erickson who was nearly ejected as well. Between the 2 games Rattler pitchers gave up 6 solo HRs, they had come into today with the fewest HRs given up in the Midwest League. Johnny Davis (3-4) was the only prospect with a multi-hit game, an impressive showing in just 7 innings, though only 1 of those hits left the infield. The T-Rats played much better defense in the regularly scheduled contest and Omar Garcia notched an OF assist. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Recap

Ninth inning homer sinks Rattlers River Bandits beat Rattlers 7-4 in conclusion of Sunday's suspended game By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Quad Cities River Bandits completed their suspended game from Sunday on Monday afternoon. The Rattlers fought back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the eighth. But, Brett Booth homered to break the tie in the top of the ninth. Quad Cities added two more runs and sent the Rattlers to a 7-4 defeat at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. On Sunday, the teams traded first inning solo home runs. Chan-Jong Moon hit his first homer of the season in the top half to give Quad Cities (30-26) the lead. Michael Ratterree hit his tenth home run of the season in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Booth doubled to drive in a run in the top of the second. Wisconsin (25-31) tied the game in the bottom of the third on Clint Coulter's bloop single to right with two outs that allowed Ratterree to score all the way from first base. Tyler White homered in the top of the fourth and the River Bandits were up 3-2. The first rain delay on Sunday came with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning. It lasted 24 minutes before the game restarted. The second rain delay happened in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs, a runner at second base, and Jose Pena at the plate with a 1-2 count. Rain halted play at that point. Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez went 0-for-2 with a strikeout at the plate on Sunday. He did not take the field after the first rain delay. Ramirez is scheduled to be Wisconsin's designated hitter in Tuesday's regularly scheduled game. Pena flew out to center on the first pitch of the restart. The River Bandits added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning against reliever Tristan Archer. Brett Phillips doubled with one out and scored on a single by White for a 4-2 lead. The Rattlers rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning. Coulter was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Taylor Brennan doubled with one out. Francisco Castillo's hard grounder to the right side of the infield deflected off the glove of Jon Kemmer, the first baseman who made a diving attempt on the ball. The change of direction allowed the ball to get past Moon at second and make it into the outfield. Coulter scored easily and Brennan scored from second on a head first dive to tie the game. Quad Cities had an answer in the top of the ninth. Booth led off the inning with a solo home run, his first homer of the season, to give the River Bandits a 5-4 lead. Ronnie Mitchell reached on a single with one out. A two out single to center by Tanner Mathis resulted in Mitchell scoring due to a pair of errors on the play. Mathis wound up at third on the play. He scored on a single by Chase McDonald and the Bandits were up 7-4. The Rattlers got a leadoff single by Angle Ortega in the bottom of the ninth inning, but he was left stranded as Andrew Walter struck out the next three batters to close out the game. Wisconsin is at six games under the .500 mark for the first time this season. The series concludes with a game on Monday afternoon. Preston Gainey (1-3, 3.20) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The River Bandits have Andrew Thurman (2-3, 5.83) as their scheduled starter. Game time is 12:05pm. Milwaukee Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez is scheduled to make his second appearance with the Timber Rattlers as part of his major league rehabilitation assignment on Monday. Monday is a Qdoba Q*Monday. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton (3813 E. Calumet Street or 4343 W. Monday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV. HOME RUNS: QC: Chan-Jong Moon (1st, 0 on in 1st inning off Victor Diaz, 1 out) Tyler White (3rd, 0 on in 4th inning off Victor Diaz, 1 out) Brett Booth (1st, 0 on in 9th inning off Harvey Martin, 0 out) WIS: Michael Ratterree (10th, 0 on in 1st inning off Kevin Comer, 2 out) WP: Adrian Houser (4-1) LP: Harvey Martin (2-3) SAVE: Andrew Walter (5) TIME: 2:44 (:24 delay) ATTN: 5,736 Wisconsin Suspended Game Boxscore You would think looking at the peripherals from Harvey Martin's season line that he would be having a good season, but he continues to give up hits in bunches, even though the defense didn't help him out in the 9th after he gave up the HR. All told the T-Rats pitchers gave up 15 hits, 3 HRs, and 4 walks against just 4 strike outs in this game. The offense was pretty decent though with 10 hits; 2 each for Michael Ratterree (2-4,HR,BB), Clint Coulter (2-3,2B), Francisco Castillo (2-4), and Paul Eshlemen (2-3). Jose Pena and Johnny Davis tallied OF assists in the game, however the T-Rats also committed 3 errors in the contest. Wisconsin Suspended Game Recap The ball game... Quad Cities Top of the 9th Brett Booth homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Thomas Lindauer flies out to center fielder Johnny Davis. Ronnie Mitchell singles on a ground ball to first baseman Taylor Smith-Brennan. Chan Moon flies out to center fielder Johnny Davis. Tanner Mathis singles on a line drive to center fielder Johnny Davis. Ronnie Mitchell scores. Tanner Mathis to 3rd. Throwing error by first baseman Taylor Smith-Brennan. It's still early in his career but you'd have to go back a long ways to find a #1 overall pick who's struggled as much out of the gate as Appel, all the way back in 2004 Matt Bush was taken #1 overall and was as awful in his first full season. He was just okay in limited action after the draft last year but 2014 has been a struggle. Astros' Appel 'humbled' by tough loss Top '13 Draft pick allowed 10 runs in 1 1/3 innings for Lancaster

Sounds Fall To I-Cubs, 5-2 Nashville's Mike Fiers Earns 8th Quality Start in Loss Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/7/4/77798374/cuts/_MPS4217_Large_evz8fub0_aidbk774.jpg NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The first-place Nashville Sounds (31-27) had their four-game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium, as the visiting Iowa Cubs worked a pair of two-run homers for the 5-2 road victory. The I-Cubs first touched Sounds starter Mike Fiers (6-3) for a home run in the second inning. Christian Villanueva's blast to left field scored Chris Valaika, who singled to lead off the inning for the initial 2-0 advantage. Pinch hitter Brett Jackson recorded Iowa's second two-run homer in the seventh inning, sending Sounds reliever Michael Blazek's pitch over the right-field wall. It is the first pinch-hit home run against the Sounds since Fresno's Johnny Monell hit one on May 10, 2013. The Cubs plated an additional run with Blazek on the hill in the eighth inning courtesy of Valaika's sac-fly to right. Nashville picked up their first run in the home half of the fifth inning when Cubs prospect Javy Baez committed a throwing error, sailing the ball over I-Cubs first baseman Valaika in a double-play attempt, which allowed lead runner Matt Pagnozzi to score and cut the Iowa lead to one run. Pagnozzi drew a lead-off walk to start the frame and advanced to third on Hainley Statia's single to left field. Statia accounted for two of the Sounds five hits. Pagnozzi slapped an RBI-single in the ninth inning to bring home pinch hitter Kevin Mattison for the team's final run. Despite limiting Iowa to two runs on three hits over six innings of work for his eighth quality start this season, Fiers was charged the loss, his third. Fiers faced a jam in the third inning, with Baez moving from first to third on a pair of stolen bases. With two outs, the 28-year-old walked Valaika to put runners on the corners before escaping without damage with a strikeout. He finished with seven strikeouts to bring his season total to 92, which leads the minors. Nashville hurlers have earned 26 quality starts this season, which ranks second in the PCL behind Iowa, who picked up their 32nd with the effort turned in by starter Eric Jokisch (5-4). Jokisch kept the Sounds quiet through the first four innings and retired his first 11 batters faced. Sean Halton broke the team's hitless stretch with his single to centerfield in the fourth inning. Jokisch picked up the win with his six innings of one-run baseball. The Sounds will play game three against the Iowa Cubs on Monday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Taylor Jungmann (1-1, 5.00) takes the hill for Nashville, opposite RHP Dallas Beeler (2-0, 5.91). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game. Nashville Boxscore This has been a Jekyll and Hyde offense of late, all or nothing, feast or famine, however you want to put it. Just 9 hits in the last 2 games... Mike Fiers was his usual self... low hits & walks, high # of strike outs, too bad one of those hits was a HR which tagged him for the loss. Sunday's game suspended by rain Rattlers and River Bandits will restart the game on Monday at 12:05pm By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattler GRAND CHUTE, WI - Sunday's game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Quad Cities River Bandits at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium has been suspended by rain. The teams will restart the game on Monday, June 2 at 12:05pm. A seven-inning game will follow the completion of the suspended game. Quad Cities was leading the Rattlers 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning with a runner at second, two outs, and a 1-2 count on Jose Pena. Then, a heavy downpour hit the ballpark and forced the umpire to call for the tarp to be placed on the field. Had the River Bandits recorded the final out of the inning, the game would have been official and the River Bandits would have won their sixth straight game. The teams endured a 24-minute rain delay in the bottom of the fourth inning. Play resumed after the first band of showers pushed through in the bottom of the fourth, but the severe thunderstorms and heavy rain that fell after the second delay forced the suspension. The weather also forced a shorter rehabilitation appearance for Brewers third baseman Aramis Ramirez. Ramirez was to get three plate appearances on Sunday for the Rattlers, but did not come out to play the field in the top of the fifth inning after the rain made the infield slick in the bottom of the fourth. Ramirez went 0-for-2 with a popup and a strikeout before being lifted from the game. The teams will restart Sunday's suspended game on Monday at 12:05pm. The game will be played to its conclusion and the regularly scheduled game will be played after a thirty minute break. The regularly scheduled game is now set for 7-innings. Fans with tickets for Monday's game will be admitted to both games. Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of Baker Tilly, WVBO, and AM1280 WNAM. Tickets for Sunday's game may be exchanged for the same price ticket to any future regular season Timber Rattlers home game in 2014. Tickets must be exchanged at the Timber Rattlers ticket office. Tickets cannot be replaced if lost, stolen, or destroyed and there are no cash refunds. The Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium Box Office is open from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 3:00pm. Individual game tickets for the 2014 Timber Rattlers season are on sale now. Fans may purchase their tickets in person, by calling (800) WI-TIMBER or (920) 733-4152 or online through timberrattlers.com.

I don't think you quite understand what's actually been said. The Brewers have a ton of depth in their system, but no one who could be comfortably projected to be an impact player coming into the 2014 season. Peralta hasn't been a prospect for years, Kintzler is a BP arm, Davis and Gennett are replaceable talent, Nelson is a #3 best case with his control, Thornburg is probably a #3 and lost his prospect status last year, and Fiers' time as a prospect was done before Peralta's. I liked all of those guys in the minor leagues and routinely stuck up for Davis, but none other than Peralta can be projected to be above average MLB players. If Peralta continues to make incremental improvements he could end up being special but we'll have to see. We have plenty of guys that could be average MLB starters best case but no "stars" in waiting, especially in the upper minors. Meanwhile our stars get older and less dynamic by the year. We don't have any top of the rotation starters in the minor leagues above R ball at this time. Nor did we have any impact position players in the system above Helena prior to the season, though Taylor and Coulter are making a case for consideration and are rising given their seasons thus far. I like everything about Taylor's improving game and I love what Coulter has done at the plate, though his defense behind the plate is atrocious outside of his strong arm. I think many Brewer fans just aren't all that objective because these players are "our guys" but to compare our prospects against the Cardinals prospects as an example: I would take Wacha over Peralta. Wacha has one of the best 2 pitch combinations in baseball, this one isn't all that close at this time. I would take Miller over Nelson. Miller has the ability to dominate MLB hitters just on his FB alone and is younger. This one isn't close at this time. I would take Thornburg over Martinez. Martinez has the bigger arm (can reach 100 MPH) and is younger but I like Thornburg more, I'm probably being a bit of a homer but I'll take present production over upside in this case. This was a tough call. I would take Wong over Gennett. Wong is a better all around hitter, is a better defender, and runs better than Gennet. This is also not close. I would take Taveras over Davis. Taveras is a better defender, has a stronger arm, is a better hitter, has more power, and runs better than Davis. Taveras is/was one of the best prospects in all of baseball, again not close. I would take Rosenthal over Kintzler. Rosenthal throws harder, has a good enough repertoire he could be a starting pitcher, and is much younger. This was a no brainer. I would take Lynn over Fiers. Lynn throws harder, has a true plus secondary pitch, and is 2 years younger. I like Fiers' pitchability but Lynn will stick in the rotation and Fiers' long-term home is probably the bullpen, again not close. Martinez/Thornburg is as close as I can come, the disparity in talent between the prospects on both sides is monumental, it really can't be overstated.
