  1. Please make sure they all hit to the opposite field and can handle a change-up. They would be two up on the Brewers already.
  2. Since everyone is bashing everyone right now, I am just curious what moves people think Melvin should have made that would make the Brewers a better team. Let's ignore injuries, because that can't be Melvin's fault. (Melvin had no way of knowing Capuano or Gallardo would get injured) - Gagne was a mistake. Trading for Lidge (who went very cheaply) would have been a much better option. - Turnbow should have been jettisoned before the season. (But I understand why they hoped he would turn it around) - Yost could have been fired. Those are about the only 3 things I can think of where Melvin really could have done a better job. Braun to the OF was the right move. Perhaps we could use a better 3B than Bill Hall - but who? And then what would you do with Hall? Kendall and Cameron were good signings. What else should have been done this off-season?
  3. Ennder, I always feel bad for you when this argument comes up. Most people refuse to look at any peripheral stats - and end up over/under valueing players. But if someone is already ignoring peripheral stats - your chances of converting them aren't too good. The best argument you can make is that you were 100% correct on Villanueva. I remember many people upset at the notion that Capuano was likely to earn a spot in the rotation over Villanueva. You and I spent a lot of time argueing that Capuano was just "unlucky" and Villanueava was "lucky". In the end, Villanueava just wasn't a very good pitcher. And now, Villanueava has a 6.46 ERA. Funny how "luck" changes everything.
  4. Bases loaded and 1 out with Kendall at the plate - they were just trying to keep him out of a double play. (Which is usually hits into, hence he is batting in the 9 spot) Kendall ended up grounding out to the SS, which might have been a double play. I thought it was a decent call.
  5. I know the vent thread is just for "venting" - but honestly, what does Mark A have to do with any of this? The idea is just absurd. I also don't understand after every game why Yost needs to be fired. I don't know off anything Yost did yesterday that caused that lost. Hall or Kendall got mixed up on a call. And the closer blew the game. (Not saying Ned doesn't - but sometimes people want to fire him for things he can't really control) Of everyone involved, Ned did his job.
  6. I think Bill has looked pretty good defensively this year. But of course, after a year of Braun... This thread title could just as easily included what to do about Weeks & Hardy. I would like to see Branyan platoon with Hall and Dillon taking some starts from Weeks. It's time to accept that Hall is a very limited player. Hardy is pretty average. And Weeks just isn't that good.
  7. To be fair, and I am a Doug Melvin supporter, I think you are only looking at current Brewer players. Doug has had very poor luck with long term contracts. (Brady Clark/Turnbow) The best thing Melvin has done for the Brewers has been to build us as a team that compete year in and year out. I disagree with the notion that we have a small window. We may have a small window with the current players, but we have ample talent to keep replenishing from within. I am curious as to how Melvin might build a better rotation than the one he assembled this offseason. Sheets, Suppan, Capuano, Gallardo, Villanueva, Bush, Capuano, and Parra are all quality MLB pitchers. We have had some unfortunate performances and injuries. Melvin can't control either.
  8. Salome has a .964 OPS right now. I think that has to be my biggest surprise so far this season. I knew LaPorta and Gamel would hit. But Salome has been amazing since his slow start. Huntsville always knows how to cheer me up after a tough Brewers loss.
  9. The only young player I am really "counting on" is Jeffress. Rogers and Braddock I just mention as possibilities. We only need one or two players to pan out for a very respectable rotation.
  10. Yovanni should be an established ace by then. Parra has a #2-type ceiling. Jeffress has a 1/2 ceiling. Villanueva would be the 4. With Suppan as a 5, that is not a bad starting rotation. And that is still leaving out Mark Rodgers and Braddock as well as any other minor leaguers and/or 2008 draft picks.
  11. Kendall's ball might have been a double play anyways. The call was OK. Hall or Kendall (Or Sveum) messed up.
  12. Quick hits... I would imagine the payroll with be around $100 million. Inflation alone will cause a 5% increase each year. Plus increased attendance. I doubt Weeks, Hardy, McClung and Bush will be on the team at those numbers. They aren't good enough to justify those salaries. Gamel, LaPorta, Escobar, Brantley, Salome and Irribarren will all likely be on the MLB for the league minimum. Jeffress should be on the MLB team We have a lot of draft picks this year. They will likely play some role on the 2010 team. (Although maybe not until mid-season call-ups) We are very well built for 2010.
  13. Thanks Pogo. I thought LaPorta looked kind of "stocky". And Gamel was definately taller - maybe even more than 2". I knew I wasn't crazy.
  14. Taylor Green - Where is the power? He is only slugging .382 as opposed to .516 last year.
  15. Milb.com has LaPorta listed at 6'2 and Gamel listed as 6'0. I believe when they were both up for the Winter Fan Fest - Gamel was substantially taller than LaPorta. Anyone want to venture their real heights?
  16. AAA has really become a storage for mediocre MLB players in recent years. Lots of players with MLB experience play there to remain "just a phone call away". Hence, you often see players like Gwynn, Gross, Dillon, Branyan, and Rottino playing in AAA. They aren't really "prospects" anymore - but just not 100% MLB players either. Lots of prospects spend significant time in AA. I wouldn't worry too much about whether they are in AAA or AA.
  17. How come scouts can go to a few games and formulate a pretty decent scouting report on a player, but anytime someone mentions that someone is struggling - "small sample" size is instantly throw back at them?
  18. At least no one is calling for Kremblas to be manager this year.
  19. No. However, if you are going to sign Clemens, you would 100% have to augment that signing with Bonds as well. OBP and Pitching would be quickly fixed. And I would hate the Brewers.
  20. Exactly. No one talks much about it, however. Everyone projects Corey Hart as the CF of the future. But we can always keep Cameron for next year. (We hold an option) And Braun is very athletic. Given time, he could very well develop into a CF. And no way could we get Cain for Hall. The Giants need younger talent that they would control for many years. Hall doesn't fit that description as well as Hart.
  21. Thank God for the minor leagues. They are always a good silver lining when the Brewers are struggling.
  22. Huntsville might be able to outscore the Brewers right now. Gamel is 4 for 4. LaPorta has two hits and another HR. Salome is also 2 for 3. Brantley is 2 for 3 with another walk. Unreal.
