  1. It's hard to do a lot of things during the course of a job. It's hard to fight fires, it's hard to solve murders, it's hard to dig ditches, it's hard to be an Army recruiter. At the end of the day, it's hard shouldn't be an excuse, IMO. Bob Harper to some lady on the biggest loser, "Talk Talk Talk Talk...just shup up and do it..stop talking"
  2. Since we can't sign the elite free agents, we either have to sign guys like Looper or trade top talent players ~~Monty57 I agree with your whole post Monty, wholeheartedly, except for this fact. It's that excuse that I just can't buy. I'd rather overpay an elite free agent (they'll come here for the best money) and bring up a young Escobar or Cain and use Cameron/Hardy type money to overpay for that elite pitcher than overpay for a medicore pitcher (Suppan). I just don't buy that DM cant get an elite free agent, I just don't think he either wants to, tries to, or whatever. He just doesn't do it. If I had 20M to allocate over 3 players, I'd rather allocate that money on a Halladay 19m, Cain .5m , Escobar .5m than a Suppan 9M, Cameron 8M, Hardy 3M. Especially when we have this hitting depth. Overpay for the elite, they'll come, rather than the mediocre.
  3. Wouldn't the pitching being garbage be a reason to trade for pitching? We have hitting depth, let's trade it for good pitching. Is that not a rational thought? Besides, any trades would be to better the team in 2010, when our minor league pitching still wont be ready. Anything that pitching does in 2009 is a bonus. This team should be buying for 2010, in my overly repeated opinion.
  4. TheCrew 07 had it perfectly. Until Melvin learns to get premium pitching, this team will be going in circles with it's hitting. Granted, I still like the trade because I believe it fills a need at the leadoff spot. There's just something to be had for the whole lineup when you feel confident in the guy who starts off the game and hits 4-5 times a game directly before your proven RBI guys. Again, like LaPorta, we gave up a prospect that was blocked and for that, I'm okay with the trade. Not until Melvin solidifies the rotation with a premium 1-2 punch will this team do anything but spin in circles. Off-season, mid-season...there seems to be an excuse for DM for every time of year. Similiar to the excuses for Bill Hall, if you can't perform (whether hit or attract premium free agent talent), it's time to be gone.
  5. I think this moves means that the Brewers are still looking at 2009. I'm guessing it involves Hardy for pitching. Do you guys like an infield of Lopez, McGehee, Escobar? Lopez Escobar Braun Prince McGehee Cameron Hart Kendall Pitcher
  6. Anybody know what the corresponding move was off the 40-man roster? Or did we have 1 opening left previously? brewerfan.net filter shows 38 names, not including Lopez. Brewers.com shows 41 names including Lopez with 2 dl spots. Any word on a jersey number?
  7. Most horrible approaches by those two in a combined inning so far this year. Swinging at balls, watching strikes go by.
  8. To be honest, Looper hasn't been that bad. Just frustrating when you know what this team needed was an ace or another #2 and they got probably a #3 type pitcher. Frustrations bring out the overkill.
  9. Did you say affliction? Somewhere, Ryan Braun is smiling.
  10. Great to hear on the Looper front. For some reason, I have it stuck in my brain that he has an option year. Anyhoo. Keep the bigger contracts of Fielder and Braun, let the kids come up and play in 2010. Get some front line pitching and go get it in 2011. Your big contracts of Braun, Fielder, and a great ace and a great #3 guy with a cheap Gallardo as your #2. The rest of the staff is filled out with the kids and maybe a pricer free agent as a closer.
  11. On a serious note...I think you go with cheap youth wherever possible, minus 1 veteran, whether that be Counsell of another free agent utility specialist. I think the money needs to be spent on great top of the rotation pitching and you save money by having Escobar, Gamel, McGehee all playing. Your only other "big" contracts are Fielder, Braun, and the mistakes made with Suppan and Looper. Bill Hall can be your 25th man. Hardy and his arby raise can go bye bye. If these kids can hit as well as they are "touted", then spend on great pitching and try to win that way.
  12. I'd personally prefer the clay become denser and not so sand based.
  13. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=As2eQPw2JPRiYmF8BMIDpRwRvLYF?slug=ap-brewers-braun&prov=ap&type=lgns Anybody know who this Mel Hall guy is that might play left field tonight?
  14. Yeah, we'll just have to disagree. All it was in my opinion was avoiding a PR nightmare to the casual fan. Casual fans we are not, (though somebody up there says we are bandwagon here) , so we shouldn't believe everything the PR department puts out. Bottom line, DM has been unable or unwilling to obtain top of the line pitching help via free agency. I don't see that magically changing this off-season. As Peavey pointed out, the off-season isn't the time to do that. Barring a mid-season acquisition 2010 is likely a lost cause. Which is fine...honest. If 2011 is when the team wants to make their next run, all I suggest getting a General Manager that will be able to get the pitching help it needs before that generation of players too passes through their pre-arby years as well?
  15. I absolutely agree. I think the focus should be 2010 and 2011. I have no doubts that we won't have highly touted prospects to trade for a Halladay type pitcher two years down the road. Not with Doug Melvin. I don't trust he has this ability. It's the best idea, I just don't think he'd do it. He failed to do so during this generation crop, what'll change with the next generation?
  16. Only bandwagon "fans" want to make the move. Now I've heard it all. Stellar 41st post, nice to meet you.
  17. I didn't think you were. I have zero faith of Melvin upgrading the rotation for 2010. As to "the future" and "competing", wasn't that supposed to be now? I thought this generation (2008-2010) of players (Hardy, Weeks, Fielder) was supposed to compete for a World Championship, not a winning record. Now, we are talking about the next generation? We are throwing away this generation for the next generation. Please, read this as a question and not a statement with definitive tone. Until the mindset of the GM changes in regards to the rotation and how he acquires it, what difference does it make what generation of young hitters we have? I don't see the need to give up on this generation of our talent yet.
  18. Let's not be sheep into the offers "thrown" at Sabathia and Cordero. I made the notation that DM does sign high valued closers. Again, a flawed approach in my opinion to after a guy to pitch 35-40 meaningful innings in games you are leading by perhaps as much as 3 runs as opposed to a starter who barring injury will net you 200+ meaningful innings. He was a "big time" free agent pitcher because that's what the Brewers billed him as. He was successful during a short period of time on a big stage. Other than that, the Pirates and the other teams he played for got #3-#4 type stuff that he will always bring. He may very well be hesitant to make a mistake, the difference being the mistake would be in hindsight with Halladay, not with foresight like Suppan. Mistakes in hindsight, I can live with.
  19. His track record suggests he will do just that...."a decent starting pitcher". Otherwise known as Jeff Suppan or Braden Looper. Seriously guys...another decent starting pitcher will not make the Brewers contenders in 2010. That's all Doug Melvin does is acquire #3's and #4's in the off-season. Teams don't sell in the offseason, they try and get better. The best time to get front line starting pitching is now. A failure to do that and you can just plan on 2011 being a chance at the next winning season, let alone a playoff berth.
  20. My bad with the Bush deal. I'm not talking about hitting (Sexson). I'm talking about a high caliber free agent pitcher, not a Suppan or a Looper. Doug Melvin just simply doesn't go after established high caliber pitching in the off-season. If he doesnt give away enough to get Halladay now, I have no doubts that the 2010 rotation (barring injury) will open as Suppan, Gallardo, Bush, Looper, Parra.
  21. To the people that don't want a move made for Halladay, I ask one question, Do you trust Doug Melvin? : This isn't even about 2009 to me anymore. Will Halladay put us over the top for 2009? I don't know...maybe, maybe not. This season seemed lost when he made the decision to not upgrade the rotation significantly in the 2009 offseason, (agree or disagree has been overdiscussed already). I want the Halladay move to be made because I want this team to contend in 2010. Doug Melvin has a track record of doing close to nothing when it comes to improving the Brewers during the off-season via free agency or trade. He has a like for Suppans and Loopers and likes to sign guys in free agency the are hasbeens, neverwills, and cheap (minus a free agent closer here and there). Do you trust Doug Melvin to upgrade this rotation via free agency? I don't. Do you trust Doug Melvin to upgrade this rotation via off-season trade? I don't His track record has given me reason to doubt him. Doug Melvin's best moves are made via mid-season trade, both when he has been a buyer (Sabathia) and a seller (Bush, Cordero). If Doug Melvin fails to make a mid-season acquisition for a top flight pitcher, then April of 2010 looks like the same ol, same ol rotation that we have today! 2010 may very well be down the drain if Doug Melvin fails to acquire a pitcher in July of 2009.
