  1. I love the fact that this buys out two years of FA. Locking up a player of Braun's caliber long-term isn't easy to do when you're in the financial situation the Brewers are, but I think this speaks highly of both Melvin and Braun -- DM was willing to take the risk, and Ryan was willing to stay in Milwaukee long term. This is definitely a relief, since I was almost sure Braun would end up playing for his hometown Dodgers one day.
  2. It'd be sweet if CV could get his ERA to somewhere around 5 after tonight's start. He could really use a good start to boost his confidence after a couple of rough outings.
  3. I love it when the other team plays like the Brewers for a change.
  4. Ugh. Horrible jump for Hart on that one. With the Hall walk they could've had another RISP with only 1 out.
  5. I believe it was Damian Miller against the Astros last year on La Crosse Day. The irony was that since Damian wasn't in the Player's Union, I don't think his jersey was sold in the pro shop.
  6. Meatball from Riske. Blech. I'm hoping Torres for the 9th. Mota's walks would be a flashback to Turnbow.
  7. Holy crap, Slappy almost hit one out. I guess that's how you know it's a good day.
  8. A couple of very nice plays by J.J. in that inning, too...this has probably been his best overall game of the year so far. Between that and Braun hitting 2 HR today, do I dare say the offense is starting to wake up?
  9. It'd be huge if Suppan could get through 7 innings today.
  10. I might've ended up doing that Scott Rolen-for-Hall and Capuano trade, but since Rolen didn't make his season debut until the same day Mike Cameron did, I don't know how much that would've helped the team in April. I probably still would've rolled the dice on a 1-year Gagne deal, although for a reduced price. We can all be thankful that Melvin didn't give in to the 2-year deal Gagne was insisting on, though. I might've been tempted to go after Milton Bradley to play CF instead of Cameron, given Bradley's hot start and the fact that he's a switch hitter, but they'll probably end up producing about the same.
  11. Cameron probably could use a day off, but the potential of having the batting order go Suppan-Kendall-Weeks-Gwynn just made me throw up in my mouth a little.
  12. Is Tony La Russa stupid for keeping Isringhausen as his closer until Izzy said he wanted to be taken out, too? I like the fact that Gagne is admitting to the fact that he shouldn't be out there until he can get his control going, but the problem is that the Brewers really don't have anyone else on staff that could do a better job -- guys like Mota and Riske walk a ton of guys just like Gagne seems to and just like Turnbow used to. While there are a few guys that have pitched well in "lesser" roles this year, how do we know that they won't collapse under the 9th inning pressure like everyone else? Part of me thinks the Brewers would be better off finding a guy who's dumber than a box of rocks and doesn't have the common sense to get nervous in the 9th inning.
  13. You could probably say the same of Fielder, Hart, Weeks, etc.
  14. Kendall's not exactly the guy I want hitting with the possibility of an inning-ending DP looming, but maybe he can bloop one over Brendan Ryan or something.
  15. I've really missed Corey's bloop hits to shallow right where it seems like he just throws the bat at the pitch. Good to get the leadoff man on.
  16. He also has 7 K's, though, and it seems like he's gone deep into almost every count. Looking at Gameday it also looks like the ump's strike zone is pretty tight for that game...a lot of balls being called just above the knees.
  17. Diamondbacks have the bases loaded against Ryan Dempster in Chicago.
  18. I suppose we couldn't expect the Cards to keep fielding like the Brewers all series long. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif
  19. Less save chances means less saves to blow. While CoCo hasn't blown one in Cincy yet, he hasn't exactly been great, either. He's walked 10 guys and given up 9 hits in 13 innings. He's just been lucky that most of the hits he's given up have been singles. His last appearance (May 5th against the Cubs) was extremely close to being a blown save: Top 9th: Chi Cubs - R. Freel in left field - F. Cordero relieved D. Weathers - C. Patterson in center field - M. Fontenot singled to left center - F. Pie singled to left center, M. Fontenot to second - D. Ward hit for K. Wood - D. Ward lined out to center - A. Soriano walked, M. Fontenot to third, F. Pie to second - M. Fontenot out at home, F. Pie to third, A. Soriano to second - R. Theriot walked - D. Lee grounded out to first The only thing that really saved him in that game was Fontenot stupidly trying to score on a wild pitch that had him dead at the plate.
