  1. That's Greinke's performance art announcement that he'll be signing with an NL team next season. Or maybe he just wants to finish his every start batting career with a bang.
  2. Catching the teams in front of you requires that you win games and they lose them. If you can win at an accelerated pace for two weeks while the teams in front of you lose at an accelerated pace, you can gain ground in a hurry. I think we all can see what needs to happen here: trade most of the bullpen to the Reds, Pirates and Astros.
  3. An old friend I hadn't seen for a while visited tonight. Right after Gomez hit his homer, I turned to him and said "Looks like we have a ballgame." Been using it as a joke/sarcasm line here at bf.net this season, but sadly I've come to really mean it.
  4. lolmets? I'd be banging the "Sell" drum, but honestly, who would buy anything the Brewers, except for the guys that the Brewers shouldn't be selling? Make a deal with Texas for Greinke. Other than that, I couldn't care less.
  5. Don't understand the desire on the part of many to ship Hart. Not saying he's untouchable, but he's a top 25/30 offensive player in the NL. Frankly, the team probably has a better record at this point than they would have had had Gamel not gotten injured. Hart to first opened up the full-time OF slot for Aoki. Aoki and Hart are both better offensively than Gamel, and given how Hart has played defensively at first it's hard to image that the team has suffered any defensively.
  6. Yep, assuming the fact that the team hasn't been above .500 since April 12, or at .500 since April 24 hadn't already done the trick. It's demoralizing just typing that.
  7. The sums-it-up-perfectly end to this game will occur with Gomez getting thrown out at second on a bad call. Stupid play punished by bad break.
  8. Maldonado needs to play every day, or the equivalent thereof for catchers.
  9. This club used to be a lot more fun to watch, even when they were losing. The roadmap to a win for this team has very few forks in the road that can be successfully followed.
  10. I should post the graph again when I hear the notion about the Brewers needing consistent play. They've probably been more consistent than any team in the division this season. They're just simply not especially good.
  11. The mathematics of optimism. Over the last 5 years, the average win total of the teams that just missed out on the wildcard (both leagues) was 88.8. The lowest of those win totals was 87, the highest was 90. After losing tonight in Cinci, the Brewers have 44 wins in the book and 70 games left on the schedule. If the Brewers simply manage to go .500 on the road in their remaining 38 roadies, they have to go 25-7 in Miller Park the rest of the year to get to 88 wins. "Merely" going 21-11 at home the rest of the way means they "only" have to go 23-15 on the road the rest of the way (bucking their current .419 road pace). And 88 or fewer wins would only have garnered the extra 1-game WC bid 3 times for the last 10 presumptive 2nd WC qualifiers. So gimmee some of that super optimism, because after looking at the numbers it's all I've got to go on.
  12. Unless the Brewers are riding a 3-game streak going into ZG's scheduled start on Tuesday, I guess I'd prefer he doesn't start that game either. There should be a deal to be made by that point and getting an extra start for the buyer should be worth something.
  13. Trade Deadline Elimination Number down to 1 with 5 games to play.
  14. Well, he'd be in the pen this season if not for injuries to other guys. I think Marco is a fairly competent #5 starter. He's probably gonna take a loss tonight again that's as much on everybody else as it is on him. If the team had any kind of bullpen he should have been out after six with a very high quality start to his credit.
  15. Say what you will about this team, but it seems clear to me at least that they're still fighting their brains out. They may not be quite good enough over the long haul, but they aren't just hanging it up. To a certain extent that's about as much as you can ask.
  16. I saw the Oakland A's yesterday. For the life of me I can't figure out how they are above .500 playing in the AL. But when I watch the Brewers I know why: the A's have a bullpen. They don't have a strong lineup and nobody knows any of their pitchers, but they are better than the Brewers and it's really pretty sad.
  17. Cards once again ending the Brewer season, in Miller Park, if only "effectively" in this instance.
  18. I was nervous watching the graphic update of the MIL/PIT 9th on the scoreboard at Target Field yesterday. This is not easier.
  19. If Freese homers here I will rip out all my eyelashes.
  20. This feels like the exact opposite of counting down a magic number.
