  1. A family friend has been a MLB bullpen coach for a long time. First and foremost, you need a member of the management team down in the pen, for a lot of reasons, not least of which is just babysitting. How the bullpen coach duties fit in with the rest of he staff depends on the organization and changes from spring training to the regular season. Setting a tone in the pen can be important. The coach doesn't necessarily impose a tone, but can help steer it and having eyes and ears down there can provide insight to the management in the dugout about much more than just how a guy looks while warming. In a lot of ways it's the most people-oriented job on the staff, and good bullpen coaches are often among the most-liked and most-respected guys on the staff because they have a chance to pass on info and insight to the often youngish guys in the pen. A lot of bullpen coaches that were players are often guys that had journeyman-type careers of their own and they can sometimes connect with a lot of players, especially relievers, in that way, too.
  2. The Nats have only given up double digit runs 3 times this season before today. Evey time they hit double digits they gave up 11. Lost all 3 games, two of them in extras.
  3. Pujols was at the plate as winning run in Anaheim, down 2-0. Gets ahead 3-0, GIDP to end game.
  4. Would be pretty funny if, on the road, opposing ballparks started up with Kool and the Gang when the Brewers bullpen door opens.
  5. Super stoked for the huge series with the Astros starting tomorrow! Don't look now but the Cubs are closing on the Brewers fast.
  6. Greinke actually got pretty stellar run support in Milwaukee. Now, if the angels go up 4-1 next inning and give up the lead in the 9th...... Yeah, he did. I was speaking more from the "no matter how well I start, something will inevitably go wrong" perspective.
  7. Meanwhile in Anaheim, Greinke has 6IP, 5H, 1R, 1ER, K, 1BB and he's gotten a whole 2 hits of support in return. He should feel right at home I think.
  8. Someone asked Lucroy about this and he said he would be terrible at any other position. Said he hasnt played another position since grade school I'm sure he could learn 1B. His value would be a fraction of what it is now, though. The whole dance at 1st base is going to be really interesting. The injuries to Gamel and Luc didn't end up hurting the team in the W/L cloumn this season IMO, but they did open up some perspectives. The Gamel injury (and then the fortunate-for-us tweak to Ishikawa) facilitated the great (and fully deserved anyway) look we've gotten at Aoki by opening a spot for Hart at 1st. And then Luc getting hurt gave us the great look at Maldonado. If only we could teach one of them to play SS.
  9. Before the day is done maybe we can trade Maldonado to the Nats for Zimmerman. /hangs up phone and listens
  10. Strange indeed. We're both in the Wausau market area (unless you're working under a different address) so I'd think we should both be getting the same feed options.
  11. I'm watching 669-1 in HD here in central WI. Must be some sort of geographic thing? Maybe certain places are losing HD feeds on regional networks due to DTv using extra HD slots for Olympic coverage.
  12. Switch the order of the names, and Pirates to Brewers, and somebody in Pittsburgh probably felt the same way.
  13. I know a group of guys heading down on Saturday to cheer for Jordan Zimmerman. I really can't blame them at this point.
  14. That's exactly what I mean. The Reds do look primed to have a run, but who knows? There aren't any organizations in this division that can just buy their way out of problems or that are a lead-pipe lock for success in a given season. If the Brewers feel like they need to put this thing in Neutral for a bit to facilitate moving forward later, I get that. I just don't see a lot of value in putting it in Reverse.
  15. well, we are losing the worst team in the division, so its not going to be AS terrible as it has in the past... That's true, but I'm not terribly blown away by what's at the top. Losing the Astros makes it harder to get the wildcard, but winning the NL Central isn't like winning the AL East. This year's Reds are last year's Brewers. We don't even know if the Pirates can keep things up this year, much less whether they will play this well next season. The Cubs are in full retool mode. I'm not saying that the Crew should be all-in for next year or do something dumb in terms of going out seeking veterans to add with the idea that they can turn this time into a high-probability contender. But I'm also not a huge fan of the notion that rebuilding is a sure-fire x-year process, because it's not. Sometimes just having a solid team that has an opportunity to make a good run is the best option, provided you are always looking to remodel and experiment a bit as you go.
  16. I don't see how this team can't be at least competitive next season, in this particular division, provided you don't completely deflate the thing. Aoki, Weeks, Braun, Ramirez, Hart and Lucroy is a good offensive core. You have to almost completely rebuild the pen, but that in many ways comes down to good fortune as much as anything. As much a headache as the pen has been for the Brewers this season, bullpens are not especially good throughout baseball. Yeah, you have to catch lightning in a bottle, but that goes for most pens, even those that seem to be established. There is a team that this year has a "good" pen that is going to fall flat on its face with pretty much the same guys next season.
  17. When it comes to the farm system, it's nice to have 'prospects' that are recognized as such by everyone, but in the end what matters is having established 'players'. Prospects are nice in that you can trade them for other organization's players Prospects are also more likely to become players (and stars) than the guys who make up the rest of the system, but you're still only dealing in likelihood. Nobody really thought too much of Maldanado as much of a 'prospect', but it looks like he's a player. In the end, a team needs stars, but it also needs a bunch of solid players. I don't care if those guys were 'prospects' or if they just become players as a result of player development. If there's one beef I have with Milwaukee's farm system, as opposed to some others, it's that the system has been too dependant on high profile prospects and light on general player development. Seems like that's exactly where they're going to need to excel if they want to build from within in the medium-term.
  18. The plane to Milwaukee should be carrying fewer people on the way home than it did on the way to Cinci.
  19. Guys, if the pen blows the lead in the 8th at least you have a chance to bat again. Because what are the odds that the pen will blow the lead again in the 9th? It's simple math.
  20. I just calculated the Phil's OBP against the pen the past two nights. Having done so, I'm too terrified to post it.
