Gas grill questions

I just got a new lp gas grill and, being the noob at it that I am, would like to know what the "throbbing brain" of bf.net does for the propane tank. Do you buy your own and refill it somewhere? Or, do you just get the filled tank at a place and just keep exchanging the tank for a filled one? Also, what places do you recommend for getting/refilling/exchanging? If anybody has specific recommendations, I live in Hartland. Thanks in advance for your help

Where I live I can select whatever tank I want when I exchange, so I've never had any problems going that route. I've had them refilled, too, but I guess I just like getting a new (or at least new-looking) tank each time.

In general if your grill doesn't have a tank or if you want a backup its cheaper just to buy a tank from a refill place since you'll often get charged $25 to purge an empty tank. After that its usually cheaper to go someplace to have it filled. That's assuming you ahve aplace nearby, no sense in driving an extra 10 miles to save $2.

Thanks, too, to jschris and endaround.

What I might do is a little of each. The local Pig has the tank exchange plus it's local. That'll be my primary. I'll also buy a tank and use that as a backup throughout the year.

I used to go get my Propane tank refilled until I realized....it is only a propane tank....I then realized that I should not have any strong emotions about a propane tank and exchange it at the local Hy-Vee.

We've only gone through 2 tanks, one worked ok and the current one works dandy. I would exchange to be honest, it's quicker and easier. If it sucks, use it once and take it back, I'm sure they'd just give you another one (and give the one your returned to the next guy:).

By the by, where would a guy take a gas grill to get fixed? The knobs wont turn after a long winter, even though the grill was kept in the garage (btw, two winters ago it was kept OUTSIDE over the winter, so it could be from that, although it worked fine last summer.)

I'll second the hardware store, at least the smaller local ones. We've got one that fixes everything, plus they're a great place to rent stuff you use once a year.

Cool, Ive got one just up the road from where I live. I know they service lawn mowers and snowblowers, dont know why I didnt think of them before.

I get mine refilled at the local True Value. Costs the same as an exchange and they have a buy 4 get one free card, so I come out ahead.
