Latroy Hawkins?

Latroy Hawkins was Designated for assignment by the yankees yesterday to make room for Damaso Marte. I think he would be a great addition to the bullpen, taking over for Mota. If I understand it correctly he would only cost us the league minimum if he clears waivers and does not accept an assignment to the minors.

 

Hawkins has not had the best results ERA wise this year, but he is pitching in what is the toughest division in all of baseball, and has pretty good periherals. He would for sure be an upgrade over Mota, and if he does not work out we just cut him, and give the spot to Dillard.

The BABIP on Hawkins doesn't indicate that hitters were getting all that lucky off him. He's right on his career norms ... However, he does have a 1.5 G/F ratio, so that's encouraging.

 

However, honestly, I'd rather have Dillard over Mota.

Hawkins would be better than Mota, but so would a lot of guys. I'd rather the Brewers trade for an actual good pitcher or give one of their young(er) guys a shot.

Hawkins is only marginally better than Mota. No thanks. The difference between the two is the difference in effectiveness between bailing out the Titanic with a teaspoon vs. a tablespoon - either way you're still gonna sink fast.

Hawkins was traded to the Astros for minor league2nd/3rd baseman Matt Cusick. Cusick actually looks like he might have a future, though he's a bit old for his league. The Yankees did well to get a guy of his caliber for Hawkins. He probably won't pan out, but he at least has a chance to. Hard to see what the Astros are doing.
