Mike Jones' numbers

So I was perusing some things after his nice start today and looked at his numbers. In Brevard County he had a GO/FO of 1.69. In AA that has risen to 2.13.

Additionally, he has allowed 63 hits and 28 runs in 55 IP in AA. But in the last three outings before he went on the DL with the gastrointestinal problem, he allowed 21 hits and 14 ER in 12 IP.

 

Subtracting those numbers (not always fair), here's his Huntsville line:

43 IP 42 H 14 ER 7 BB 30 K 2.93 ERA

 

He's pitched 6+ innings in 6 of the 7 outings (that is, substracting those three potentially sick outings). He's also been keeping his pitch counts rather low (80-90 for 6-7 IP). I wonder if the Brewers will promote him to AAA soon to see how he does against the higher competition as an audition for a potential 40-man roster spot in the offseason

Heck bring him up to Milwaukee and let's see what he's got. It's not like you'd be doing psychological damage. After all he's 26. I don't see the point in grooming him to be a career AAA pitcher especially with the current Brewer staff in deep trouble.

JohnBriggs, one benefit is that it'd sure be nice to have someone that a) has velocity, and b) has a good groundball ratio. Given his history, he's the kind of guy that could be perfect as a long man in the pen (and perhaps back of the rotation if he proves himself)

Does anyone know how hard he's been throwing this year? I haven't seen him this year, but saw him a few times last year when he was struggling a bit.

GoMocs is new to the board and a Huntsville season ticket holder. He started a thread about a week ago saying hi to everyone. Maybe he can get some infor on how hard Mike Jones is throwing these days?

I realize we have to keep resigning him, but I don't see the point in bringing him up to Milwaukee yet. Its not like he's going to be the savior to the pitching staff. Sign him for another year, start him and Nashville, and who knows, maybe at this point next year he'll be starting games in Milwaukee.

jjhardy, I seem to recall earlier this season (or late last season) that he was throwing 92 (or was it 94? either way, still better than Suppan, Looper, Villanueva, Bush, and our entire AAA rotation).

 

I think (from all accounts) Mike knows how to get guys out, he just is still working on trying to get command back. His arm just doesn't always throw it where he wants it to go, but has been much better this year as he's now about 24 months removed from Tommy John surgery and at least 40 months removed from major shoulder surgery).

At some point, he may be starting at MLB this year! I'm not sure if I should put that in blue or not...

Gosh he's 26. Next year he'll be 27. Normally, guys like him would be toiling in places like Fargo and Winnipeg by now. There must be a reason he's still around. He'd be on his normal rest to make that start in San Diego on Saturday.

Normally guys like him call it quits, gents that have multiple major surgeries before they get out of AA tend to find something else to do.

Here's to hoping for another year next year in the Milwaukee system. Start him in Nashville and see what happens.

From all accounts, he's a great teammate--almost like a mentor. Given that his fastball has returned, it'd be nice to hear about his secondary pitches. But his velocity and relatively efficient pitch counts have been positives while his surgeries, walks, and home runs have been negatives. Still, this has to be the best his arm has felt since his first year or two.

I too would like to have seen Jones get the call-up to start one of the games this weekend. He's shown he can go 6 or 7 innings on a consistent basis and has also shown better control as of late. Maybe he'll get his shot yet this season if the Burns/Dillard/Villanueva trio fails big time.

If Jones makes it to the bigs it will be the biggest and best comeback we've had in a long time. The type of inspirational comebacks Disney movies are made of. The crazy thing is Jones isn't far from making that improbable comeback a reality.

Very true. If the Brewers are completely out of the race, there's no harm in letting a guy like Jones or Josh Butler (if healthy) start a couple games in September to see what kind of stuff they have.

I dont really agree with this line of thinking. Jones and Butler both are having very good seasons. Why ruin that by having them get shellacked in their final start? Let them finish the season on a high note, and give them a chance in the spring time to impress.

Would be nice if Jones, Butler and Rogers all continue to progress to possibly see them at some point in 2010 or no later then 2011.

Don't forget that Looper has also been horrendous. He could easily be replaced too.
