That's a stunning story. Best wishes to this kid, and hopes that he doesn't have any regrets.

Reading about this makes me think of Billy Sunday. . .

 

Despite being a huge celebrity in his life, his story is largely lost in today's times. A star baseball player in the 1880s, he quit mid-career to follow his faith, and went on to become the most influential evangelist in the country.

Not sure Desme could be considered on the verge of "stardom". He wasn't that strong of a prospect. Really, a lot of this should be attributed to AFL hype.
